  • Wishful Thinking - Hiroshima
On October 30th 1961 the USSR carried out the first and only test of the AN602 bomb, more commonly known in the West as the 'Tsar Bomba', originally planned a 100 megaton device, the design used in the test was eventually limited to 50MT. The 27 tonne, 8 metre bomb produced a fireball 5 miles across and a mushroom cloud 42 miles high, going beyond the stratosphere.
The test ended the one-upmanship between the USA and the USSR and in 1963 they signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty, effectively ending the era of open air nuclear testing.
Fun fact: This is one of my favourite songs.

Could be wrong but I always assumed the Tsar bomb was more of a stunt and "proof" of Soviet scientific genius than a practical weapon of war. I'm not even sure they could develop a delivery system for the weapon especially since ICBMs and ultimately multiple-warhead missiles would come to dominate both sides of the Cold War.

In 1961 there were some signs of the downfall. In 1956,10 days after Khrushchev ruled the country and start insulting Stalin's legacy, a uprising went off in Tiflis, Gruzia. In 1957, Khrushchev start the "coming back progress" for minor ethnics that be moved violently in the late of WW2 to their old hometown, but the fact is this action increased the conflicts between the minor and the Russian (because the Russian moved to the old house and farm of the minor and used them when the minor was moving), and facilities in a lot of villages in Central Asia were thown away. From 1957, after decades without any great economic crysis, the economy of USSR was slowly go down, started with its food production, because of some shitty policies of Khrushchev. From 1961 to its ending, USSR became more and more depent on oil and gas, and had to import cereals from its allies and even the West, although it was one of the most mechanized food production system in the world. What a weird.

No, it is rational, because these irrational bombs didn't lead to the complete annihilation of the human race and we actually managed to survive

@@05pittsd funny thing, strategic nukes are not meant to destroy the world. They are meant to wipe out enemy industry quickly to achieve victory faster than flying bombers over enemy territory. If a nuclear war had started the fallout would have subsided in a short time allowing people to live, but the unrest that would follow would change the entire world.

@@goforbroke4428 however we all know the mentality of many nations. If they fall they take as much with them as possible. Wouldn't doubt the largest nations having a a dead man switch that will just unleash their arsenal of missiles across the globe and some priority targets. The USSR had the Dead Hand and the US had the ERCS. In a simple form I believe it's there's no one left the computer will now take the final command use the entire nuclear and conventional arsenal. It's on the idea of mutual destruction to Guarantee no victor comes out in the end.

Everyone complaining about the song choice or title is missing the main idea. Both the USSR and the US of the 50s engaged in continuous and active one-upmanship when it came to nuclear weapons. The culmination of these tests is arguably the test we're seeing in this video, where the explosion reached the stratosphere! It's not a critique of the USSR alone, it's calling the situation of continuously more apocalyptic nuclear weapons and aresnals madness.
