I am a skin cancer survivor and you know what, I am still very active outdoors. I can't live my life in the shadows just because I was diagnosed. As long as you’re applying your sunscreen, you should be fine. I didn't wear it when I was young, that's what caused mine. Just start young and stay aware.
Hey Barbara. I'm glad you're ok now!!!! That's awesome. I'm Gen X. We would bake in baby oil in my teens and early 20's. It was the thing to do. Ugh. I hope I don't get skin *C* but it wouldn't surprise me if I did unfortunately because of sunscreen neglect.
So it's not a rule for the morning, but a lot of people tout it as a rule for oil cleansers as a whole. They think you can't use oil cleansers on their own.
let's be real, i doubt they fear skin cancer that much. it's probably mainly the aging thing that's behind the obsession with sunscreen. i also feel like this should be a larger conversation, how so many people are terrified of wrinkles. it's fine to look 40 when you're 40. i wish we took away some of that pressure. it's fine to be into skincare, i love it too, but it's unhealthy with some people edit: i just wanna add that i saw a tiktok with this woman talking about how drinking out of straws leads to smile lines so avoid using straws. I think that is an example of what I'm talking about. i've also seen people genuinely saying to smile less. how sad is that? again, i want to emphasize because i see a lot of people commenting who don't understand- i'm not against sunscreen or skincare, i like both and i use sunscreen regularly, i just think the obsession some have is unhealthy and stems from fear of aging while being presented as "look it's healthy!"
Whoever coined the term "anti-ageing" in skincare has a lot to answer for. I've stopped following influencers who continually use the term. I despise how the skincare and cosmetics industry demonizes the ageing process, especially since one of the biggest factors affecting how your skin ages is genetics.
I keep getting recommended videos about "how to stop aging" "don't get wrinkles" "this anti aging product will save you" etc etc. It's too much. Aging is a blessing, we should have more fun (in moderation, like skin cancer _is_ a thing, but we should still go outside!) And stop worrying about a natural process that shows we enjoyed life
Absolutely, and most of the marketing is aimed at women. Telling a woman how "young" she looks is considered the biggest compliment. We all will age, and some of us have hit the genetic jackpot, and some of us haven't. I'm not trying to look like I'm 19.
My favorite skincare tip was from Lisa Eldridge - to stop looking in a magnifying mirror! Nothing wrong with popping, especially the way Tina described in this video, but overall I am SO much happier with my skin when I’m not being overly critical of it. ♥️💕
This has been huge for me. I actually do my makeup with a mirror that isn't as good as some of my other mirrors because I'm less critical. I can still see if my makeup is blended correctly, if my coverage is even but I don't obsess over little discolorations and pores.
My coworker and I were just having this conversation. I have broken capillaries and she has acne scars. When I look at her, I think she has beautiful, clear skin with an even tone. She got up in my face and I still didn't see the scars. Same thing vice versa with me, she tells me at least once a week how my skin just glows. She looked at my nose where the broken capillaries are and she laughed saying they are almost microscopic. I think the point is, others don't see what we perceive as our flaws. I think for her and I, it has been a good reality check. Now every week, we make a point to tell each other how good our skin looks. As someone with multiple chronic skin conditions, this little thing always makes my day and reminds me my skin doesn’t look how I think it does. I think it has encouraged both of us to simplify our routines too. Skin for me was always such a sensitive topic and now I love my skin, perceived flaws and all.
I personally double cleanse like twice a week at least, because I do see improvement when I have breakouts. You can absolutely DC if you're not wearing makeup or sunscreen, if you feel like your skin looks more dirty than usual or just want to give a deeper cleanse then it's completely fine. Just always remember that overdoing everything can have negative effects.
@@jacquelinekranjcevic8193 not at all! DC is usually quite gentle if you're using the right products, but still if you're doing it ALL THE TIME it can end up being too much, specially if you don't have that much dirt or anything to actually remove from your skin🖤
my husband is a land surveyor, and when we first started dating he'd always have a ruddy face after working and I finally was like "WEAR SUNSCREEN I'm tired of you looking like a lobster" and he actually did! the guys on the job site poke fun at him but jokes on them when he doesn't get skin cancer and they do 🤷♀️
My unpopular opinion- you can have the most intricate routine, and do everything your skin needs topical wise but it won’t mean a thing if you’re not maintaining a fairly good diet and drinking enough water. If you’re smoking, drinking too much alcohol and/or caffeine, eating poorly, not getting enough sleep- then you’re not giving your skincare the helping hand it needs! Try a lifestyle change as well as keeping to a good skincare routine, I noticed it myself when I wasn’t drinking enough water, and had poor iron levels (which I will add, sometimes that cannot be helped along with other conditions that may lead to skin problems)
Good point!! There are so many factors that affect the appearance and health of our skin…the stuff we smear onto the outside of it makes up only a fraction. Skin is a large and complex organ!
Your skin will be better if u are a drinker smoker etc with all the right skincare compared to someone healthy who doesnt....i see it all the time so no i disagree.
I feel like this is already a popular opinion since the majority of the time when someone has skin issues the response and comments always have people talking about this. If anything a real unpopular opinion is you can have good or bad health but still have or not have skin issues, because everything affects people differently and genetics and hormones sometimes are the main reasons for skin problems. I think a happy medium to say is bodies are complex and everything has the capability to impact your skin’s health depending on how your sensitive your body is.
I will say especially as someone who had severe dermatilomania and contact acne on my back, the rule of NOT. EVER. TOUCHING. ANYTHING. helped so much, because part of the problem is usually you feel a different texture somewhere and go insane trying to get rid of it, tearing literally wounds into your skin in the process and spreading dirt/germs onto them and your skin, so if you have dermatilomania do follow that, but if not, you're probably fine
SAME, im trying so hard to implement not touching anything but it’s so difficult. I just zone out and start picking at my skin anywhere something feels different.
I don’t have quite that but anxiety does make me pick at “textures”, that’s the biggest reason I started treating my keratosis pilaris, just so I'd stop picking at my arms lol and I'm seriously considering seeing a dermatologist about a single, harmless, nearly invisible little bump on my cheek that is driving me nuts when I feel it It’s so ridiculously small I honestly don’t know if they can even do anything without causing bigger scarring than the actual issue, but man does it feel big in my head
THANK YOU for saying you don’t wear sunscreen if the UV-index is less than 3! I live in Finland and from October to, I don’t know, February, the UV-index is never over 3. Now it’s been 0 for weeks and weeks and yet I still sometimes feel guilty for not wearing sunscreen during the winter months. 😅 I’m so tired of people on social media saying how you ALWAYS have to wear sunscreen no matter what the weather is like, when to me it just doesn’t make sense to protect myself from the sun when it’s literally staying hidden from us for months.
I live in Norway and GET your point! However I have glasses with uv lenses (get darker outside automatically) and they DO go darker even when index is super super low 🙈 obvi it won’t burn you but pigmentation could still be an issue for those who care about that? I don’t know! 😂🙈🤷🏼♀️
I checked and in my area the UV index in winter is 0-2. The thing is I have rosacea and it gets bad if I don’t wear sunscreen even in these conditions. I decide if I should wear it if I feel the need to wear sunglasses too. Hope that makes sense.
Hi I'm new to skincare (recently had a bad acne break out and it won't go away like it normally does), would you say it's still necessary to wear the sunscreen if I'm using retinol?
My unpopular opinion is that some 20-year-old who doesn't even need much skincare has no business telling people with mature skin that this or that product is useless because it makes no difference to THEIR skin. :V
I feel like a lot of younger skincare enthusiasts think anti-aging products are gonna reverse signs of aging when 99% of what the products are doing is really preventive. You wont "see results" so much as you're maintaining. Sure, you can do some stuff to reduce the lines and wrinkles and spots but overall youre really not gonna make wrinkles disappear with topical creams and serums lol. Those 20 year olds are gonna regret not sticking with some of those products they claim dont work in 20 years.
Very true but it's also important to remember this is a generalization. Now mature skin is different from youth skin, but the key trait of mature skin is dryness (I have observed that people's skin commonly turn dry with age) and there are young people who already deal with severely dry skin. I for one do, to the point that many of the rich products mature skin people used would not create any issues on my skin and actually make my skin look better, as opposed to all the trouble said to commonly occur when youth skin is exposed to products for mature skin. Just adding my two cents here.
Thank you for the "not wearing sunscreen if the UV index is below 3" thing - so many people are absolutely fucking OBSESSED with sunscreen and on Reddit I keep getting roasted by people who insist you need to wear sunscreen every day even if I live in the UK. Darling, I'm only 10 degrees south of the Arctic Circle, I am NOT wearing sunscreen in winter.
So true! I apply sunscreen every morning because it's my routine and my makeup is tailored for sunscreen skin but in the afternoon I check the UV index and if it's 2 or below I don't bother to reapply. I'm sure my skin can handle the singular uv ray that hits me as I walk home and the sun literally sets.
My general thing is, my morning moisturizer has SPF, that is enough if I'm not outside for more than 20 minutes. Any longer and I put on proper screen, especially in the summer etc
I’m “obsessed” with sunscreen because I had melanoma skin cancer last year from only sporadically wearing sunscreen prior to turning 41. I also live in the southern USA where the UV gets up to 12 sometimes. I don’t want cancer again so I put it on every day and reapply obsessively.
That's me. I'm a Black woman who isn't a sun worshipper. I avoid the sun, for the most part. I'm not reapplying sunscreen every two hours. IF I was on the beach, or spending hours in the sun, then I'd purposely skip the concealer and powder over my sunscreen, and reapply. But until they come out with a spray sunscreen or a powder for POC that allows reapplication to be effortless over makeup, it's not going to happen with me. Every morning, I apply my sunscreen to my face neck, chest and ears...exposed skin. I don't tan or burn.
Girl let me put you on! I swear by JM Solution Marine Luminous Pearl Protection Sun Spray. Goes on matte (no white cast) and is perfect for reapplying over makeup. I tried supergoop but it made me really shiny. I have Lupus so I have to manage my sun exposure, this stuff is always with me and I love it
I'm very surprised when skinfluencers say "invest in serums and you don't need a toner", when I've had THE BEST most lasting skin improvements with toners/essences (esp k-beauty ones)!
SAME! I will never part from the Clear Collective toner. It's the only thing I've ever used that makes my pores look invisible. They're there, just barely noticeable.
@@silviasalazar2969 I've been doing clear collective in the am and the pyungkang Yul toner at night. How does the peach slices snail mucin compare to Cosrx?
I think the worries around toners is from back in the day when they were astringents and full of skin stripping stuff. Magazines I used to read in the 90s when I was a teenager would tell you to cleanse, tone and moisturise, and if it didn’t make your skin feel tight, it wasn’t doing its job! I had a stick that was pretty much pure alcohol and tea tree. I only realised that toners were different now through this channel and then when I got one in my beauty box subscription. It’s so hydrating on my 49 year old skin.
I like how the way you say “micellar water” makes my brain conjure the image of you having just this dank leaky cellar and you use water from random mystery puddles on the floor to wash your face. “How do you get your skin so clear” “My cellar water”
my unpopular opinion is that i have oily skin and love heavier moisturizers & oils. i always find gel moisturizers to be lacking and disappointing. i don't know, i like the "greasy" feel of freshly cleansed and moisturized skin (which is very different from the end-of-day actually greasy look, lol).
I have greasy skin and now I use a ceramide moisturizer and I LOVE IT - it leaves my skin kind of waxy feeling but I'll take that over a slick grease pit any day 😂
My partner is an Amazon delivery driver, and im so so glad he only worked one shift before he asked me if he could use my sunscreen. I got so excited I gave him like 3 different ones to figure out what kind he likes, and then I got him some minis to take with him to work. One side of his face was getting burned, and one of his arms was so burnt. We also play disc golf a lot, and when we started he wouldn't use SPF, but now he does🙌🙌 My partner has blue eyes and light brown hair, and he doesn't tan he burns, and my mom has had skin cancer twice now, so im so glad he finally uses SPF. I'm now working on getting my dad to use it. He thinks sunscreen is for women(he's in his 70s, a Vietnam veteran who's very much a man's man, and who's also old school and stubborn🤣) and he doesn't burn, but during the summer he will sit outside in the sun for hours, and he gets way darker than I do(I have olive skin, im italian and I don't burn) so I hope I can eventually talk him into using SPF
Yes!!! Disc golf!! I also bring one of those massive disc golf umbrellas because my skin is so pale that the sunscreen that matches my skin tone best is the white mineral one 😂
@Kiki Clark haha🤣🤣 the courses around me actually don't have a lot of uncovered area, so we are mostly in the shade. Our favorite course is actually owned by the county electric company and it's right by one of their stations, and there's a couple holes that go along their fence, so its only open on the weekends😭
I love this video! I love how you included that most ppl don’t care about having perfect clear skin, outside of the skincare community. I used to work at Sephora and was unhealthily concerned about my skin and it was only when I left that I dialed down my skincare and focused on other things that my skin actually looked better. Not worrying about my skin actually helped it heal. Great video and discussion ❤❤
This is so true. I've noticed that the less time I spend stressing about having perfect skin and instead focus on loving myself and the skin I have, the better it seems to look.
Especially somewhere like Sephora, stuff like that is a great way to make people spend money on expensive skin care they don't need and deep down don't actually want. It's important to remind ourselves it's okay not to make it our whole lives, it's just a small part to better the quality of our life
I like my physical scrub from time to time, it makes me feel good. I try to use it more on the body and less on my face though. I don’t reapply sunscreen because I love wearing hats, so I feel like it is enough in the winter days. I think the « glow » trend looks ridiculous on me. I feel like I deserve products that smell good. Here are some of my personal unpopular opinions: wrinkles don’t make you look old. Dull skin and dark spots age a face way more dramatically. Also, I personally think people with a little bit more body fat usually look younger. Anyway, it is not a crime to look your age or older. Getting older is a privilege.
I don’t use ANY cleanser in the morning. My skin always used to be red and angry, but since I started just using water to cleanse in the morning, it’s made more of a difference than any active or topical. I save the cleansers for bedtime!
What she said about dewy being advertised is how I felt for the longest of time about matte products in skincare and makeup and I have dry skin and it was hard finding decent products that catered to me, I’m glad now to be able to have access to certain brands like Fenty, Youth to the People, Fit Me foundation, etc.
Lavender essential oil isn’t really calming unless it’s diluted a LOT. The calming effect is more aroma-therapeutic. For your skin, it’s actually a very strong astringent. It heals burn scars pretty well (like when accidentally burning yourself while baking or handling heat styling tools, but apply once the skin is not raw 😅), and before my skin became a sensitive chaotic baby it worked pretty well to heal breakouts without scarring or dark marks (dabbed VERY LIGHTLY with a q tip - don’t let it touch unaffected skin).
yeah i think lavender is only ever beneficial solely for the aroma, not to the skin itself (i don’t know much about it specifically tho so i could be wrong) like james mentioned, i think tea tree is the only essential oil that is actually beneficial for the skin, and again if it’s diluted a lot and formulated properly
@@lovrboi Lavender is the only Oil that can be used neat, everything else HAS to be diluted/Formulated. I've been using Tea tree cream recently due to a cut on my skin, but I also have calendula (not a true oil i dont believe) for burns; Users have to be careful with Rosemary, as not only is it for memory, but can also induce Labour; Myrrh is a lovely smell; Eucalyptus (esp when used with Menthol) is fab for clearing out the nasal passages!
@@lovrboi when I researched online a few years ago I found that there are a few essential oils that can benefit the skin, including tea tree oil, rose oil, and lavender oil (like the op mentioned)
The dewy one got me! Even some of my fav TH-camrs talk about their "dewy" skin but no harm, it just looks 100% greasy and I couldn't have my face look like that. I'd prefer to have just a "from within" glow, and just have my face be plump/ healthy/ colourful skin!
Call me a goddamn elitist but the moment I see someone with dewy skin, the first though that comes to mind is 'does this person not have enough money to even buy some baby powder to control that grease'? It gets worse when that person is obviously fake tanned and dewy, I'm thinking they are pretending to be a roast pig.
I always laugh too when people put on "dewy" foundation and/or primer, comment on how dewy and radiant it looks, and then powder to get rid of all the shine.... lol! I go for matte when I do makeup, and then when I start to get a little oily I hope I just look healthy and not greasy. Oil removing sheets come in so handy!
110% dewy skin always makes my skin crawl cuz.... I just imagine my hair flying in that or struggling to put a shirt on or even my headphones that touch my face. Just a big no.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! Honestly, when I was still experimenting with skincare a couple of years ago, my skin was DESTROYED from trying to keep up with all the "must have" products that everybody was recommending (which most of them are exfoliants and serums😖). Thank you for reminding us that we can be realistic LMAO
@@Mataylor17 I feel like people nowadays just forgot how to properly and critically think for themselves and got brainwashed into that skincare rabbithole.
Tbh I was scared to watch this video but you put it so nicely 🤣🤣 yes at least I am a ‘controlled pimple popper’ and always slap a patch on right after 😌 hehe Thank you for the mention James!! 💗💗💗
Such a refreshing view -‘Not everyone cares about wrinkles and perfect skin’. I have been popping pimples since teenage and do only oil cleanse in evening unless it’s very heavy makeup. My skin is perfectly fine.
My pet peeve is people policing how others use sunscreen and pretending as if if you didn't reapply every 2h regardless of any other factors you are doing it wrong and it's useless. No! Applying sunscreen even once, even spf30 or lower is already good and the amount of reapplication necessary does depend on where you live, how the day looks and what are you doing, every 2h is a recommendation reserved for the time when you are in direct scorching sun.
I can’t get over how uncomfortable it is to wear sunscreen, on top of it being too damn expensive 😢😢😢😢 Edit: I found a cheap af sunscreen that I don't even feel, Bloqueador Bahía Faces SPF90 by Portugal Labs in Lima Peru, I love that thing
27:37 as someone with keratosis pilaris (kp, chicken skin or strawberry skin) on most of my body, physical scrubs are one of the few ways that you can take down the appearance of it. Luckily I don't have it on my face but the skin on your body is just as important as your face!
Same skin layout, I've found that even though I have an active body wash, it's just helping the texture but not the appearance 🙃. I worry about physical scrubs being rough on my skin cuz it's also super sensitive and dry 😅
@@samx36same I do love physical exfoliator on my body for KP so I use thick moisturizer or lotion after. It’s done wonders! I just had a flare up earlier this year and I got it down before it got too bad in about 2 weeks
I use tretinoin and work a semi outdoors job, so i am RELIGIOUS about my sunscreen lol. During the peach season when i worked outside, i wore a hat, but i would reapply sunscreen on my face and arms like every hour and a half (cuz it is a SWEATY job so i felt like i needed to do it sooner than 2 hours) and my coworkers would b like idk anyone who uses as much sunscreen as u🤣🤣🤣 idk im just afraid of getting cancer and if theres a very simple step i can take to try to prevent it, i might as well do that. I use tretinoin for acne, but it makes ur skin more sensitive to the sun
James, I literally love you. Your "perfection doesn't exist" intro has been making me laugh EVERY TIME for the past few months! Thank you for being such an amazing content creator!! Your videos and personality are one of my favorites here on YT. Please never stop being you!!
After so many years of using skincare, I realised that you just have to tailor to what is appropriate for your own skin, your personal preference and that you're using the product correctly. Sometimes a simple skincare routine does more for your skin, never doing a 10 step skincare routine again unless someone else is pampering me takes up so much time and effort! Japanese toner 'Naturie Hatomugi Skin conditioner' has Job's tears, it's lightweight and watery, you can layer it up, make a DIY facial mask with your cotton wipes, use it as a step as your first skin routine step in the morning, it's so good for my combo and sensitive skin and you get 200ml! And OMG I'm a millennial too, I'm an East Asian who grew up in the UK, I also remember using facial scrubs like Garnier cause it was advertised as getting rid of the oil, blackheads, ance etc. but it would be too harsh on my skin. After I was introduced to Japanese/Korean products I've never gone back.
As an Asian living near the equator, sunscreen has only been a recent buzz here. Even my mom in her 50s, just started using sunscreen this year. I was only ever encourage by you mostly to stick to it on a daily basis now 😊
thank you SO much for mentioning the sunscreen craze!! i used to be afraid of going for a walk outside without slathering my face in sunscreen and i realized i was sacrificing living my actual life. i only apply sunscreen in the morning now unless it’s an extremely outside day & i’m sooo much happier and chill.
The sunscreen obsession is very true! And it’s stressful too sometimes to think about it all the time. I am from India and I my current skin tone acc to Fitzpatrick scale is IV and to find a sunscreen which doesn’t leave white cast especially when used 2 finger length amount, and is sweat proof and water resistant seems like mission impossible. Also the money spent trying to find the right sunscreen…. Oh gosh the struggle is real.. In fact I took like 2 years break from any skincare at all because I was damn overwhelmed. I used to find myself thinking about sunscreens almost 24/7 and trying to find THE SUNSCREEN suitable for my skin. While skincare can have therapeutic effects it can also deteriorate our mental health if we don’t balance it out.
I love an occasional physical exfoliant. I use a chemical one at night as a toner and sometimes it just doesn't do the job for the texture issues on my nose and top of the cheekbones. Esp if I'm using makeup a lot. Granted, I tend to use a soft baby washcloth with my regular cleanser. You can't trust American skincare to not have plastic beads when you're on a budget.
Same, i'm on anti-acne retinol, the only exfoliant that do the job and doesn't burn my skin is my exfoliating glove. Chemical exfoliants work very slowly and they're irritating sometimes, i don't get the hype over them !
Double cleanse is a must when I'm wearing makeup or in the summer when I have a lot of sunscreen on, just like you said. But in the morning a gentle face wash is more than enough for me to remove residual night time skincare and feel clean.
I haven't washed my face in the morning for years. I cleanse , tone, and moisturize at night, and in the morning, I rinse with warm water, tone , and moisutrize. At 57, my skin looks pretty good, and is actually on the oiier side rather than dry.
Definitely agree with the not always double cleansing & paying more attention to what your skin needs. 18 months ago I had to completely change up my skincare routine out of necessity (hormonal changes & current health diagnosis lead to my skin becoming super reactive to almost everything I'd previously used), and decided to adopt a vintage inspired skincare regimen. I no longer stick to a strict protocol of double cleansing , exfoliating X times a week, layering products, 3, 5 or 8 step routines (etc), instead I have different cleansing creams & moisturisers for different times of the year, & as soon as I notice if my skin needs some extra hydration, or it's getting a little clogged, or needs a gentler touch for a while, then I automatically switch my routine up to suit what my skin care needs actually are. It's been really beneficial, especially in terms of keeping my skin nice and healthy.
I recently discovered that I needed to cleanse in the morning and use less gentle cleansers most of the time. Exfoliating never worked for my skin but I have 2 exfoliating cleansers that I rotate between, leaving each on for about 5 minutes before rinsing and my skin has never looked or felt better. I still do a retinoid and an essence of two, but you're right that switching up cleansers can go a long way and save you money on other products.
I love Doctorly TH-cam channel ❤ I learn a lot from their contant. They do livestreams on the channel and it contains a lot of useful information 🙌🏻 I appreciate this long livestreams conversation about skincare!
Totally agree with Tina about picking pimples! For some reason they heal way faster and don't leave any spots, but you have to know which ones you should pick and when
Thank you for the sunscreen one. Dont get me wrong, I wear sunscreen religiously, but back when there was that whole thing about 'wearing sunscreen even if you're at home', (which I completely understand if you're not a hermit like me) I just couldn't get onboard. When I get in from work my face gets washed, the curtains get closed and the only light that touches it for the rest of the day is from the TV or my salt lamp 😂
I was cozy in bed but got motivated to get up and do my skin care routine. When I am consistent with night time skin care, it makes a huge difference! Absolutely worth the time and it feels good 😊
I’ve been following Tina ever since you mentioned her in a video a long time ago, and haven’t looked back! You and her are two of my favourite skincare TH-camrs out there. Awesome video James!
James, you continue to impress me. I really respect and appreciate your ability to come out with videos that succinctly express my half-baked thoughts as I evolve in my ~skincare journey~. I respect your ability to be transparent. You constantly demonstrate your willingness to learn and evolve as a skinfluencer and I respect that a lot. That’s all I can ask for as a viewer. The science of skincare is ever-evolving, people’s motivations are varying, so I really appreciate what you do. Thank you for all the work that you put in. I’m constantly impressed and am thankful for your ability to create content that’s relevant, useful, and thoughtful. And thank you for featuring many different peoples videos again and again! I really like it! Cheers!
Rhode is a perfect example of actual dewy , not greasy. The products are light weight yet moisturising. I love that brand. Didn't think I would but I do.
I really agree with most of them... I do love my toners/ essences and I do pick my whiteheads because if I don't it will take forever to go away and also the pimple patch works better after... my unpopular opinion is that dove soap really helped my skin a lot ! 😌 I really love it for my face , it makes me feel plump after and it doesn't break me out like a lot of face soaps and it's under 1€ so 🤷♀️
I’m with Tina! I don’t get a lot of pimples, so it’s not a huge issue for me, but when I do, if I don’t pop them, they never seem to go away. I recently had a massive pimple come up under my nose, and I decided to just leave it. The pimple stayed for 2 weeks (way longer than any pimple I’ve ever popped) then it did eventually go down but I could still feel a lump. Then, about 3 weeks later it puffed right back up again and was even bigger and more painful than the first time round. This time I decided to pop it. I popped it, got the massive whitehead out, put some of my baume 27 on it before bed and it was gone within 2 days. If I don’t squeeze mine, they never come to the surface, they just sit under my skin pressing on nerves and making me sad. Do what works for you.
omg with the pimple popping!!! If I don't pop it lightly as it forms the inflame bits, it heals with a bump which is EVEN MORE difficult to get out! one of my current bump is almost 8 weeks old and it's not inflamed, but it's just sitting there annoying me everytime I do my skincare :')
So happy james shared he doesn‘t wear sunscreen if it isn‘t over 3 UV (factor? idk) It has been around 0-1 UV for a while in germany and I just can‘t be bothered. Almost all sunscreens worsen my acne so I weigh the benefits against the downsides depending on the strength of UV.
I’m glad he shared it too! I’d been feeling pressured about the whole thing with all these TH-camrs screaming to do it every 2hrs regardless. Ended up unsubscribing to many because it was the same message. So far I don’t have a sunscreen that agrees with my skin. They all turn me into a greasyAF mess and I start breaking out the same day! Eczema flairs too. The skin feel in general is awful for me, can’t stand it. Hopefully I’ll find one but now I can stick that pressure to the back of my mind now 😮💨
Sunscreen breaks me out too and I just find find greasy and nasty feeling on my oily skin but I do typically avoid going out in super hot whether for like 5 6 hours and stuff I have crazy acne scars not trying to ruin my face if I'm not gunna be out all day
So agree with the dewy thing. My skin is already *very* well moisturised, both from my routine that took ages to find the right readily available products that don't just sit on the surface and its own absolutely wild oil production, but makeup? Everything that advertises a 'glow' I instantly skip now, because I know it will go on looking oily and slide off in minutes (or just be full of glitter, not what I'm after). I can't afford any of the expensive things that people insist don't do this (and definitely cannot afford to take the hit on multiple attempts if the first one doesn't live up to the hype) so my only option is matte products all the way, and at one point for a few months every brand that did a decent matte that didn't look like plasterboard or oxidise terribly moved into 'dewy' products!
I know this is super cliché at this point... But exchanging all my skin care products (from brands like Dior, Clarins and Chanel), with korean skin care (most whom are fragrance free and much, much cheaper) has saved my skin. I almost never have as much as a pimple anymore.
I'm considering switching to Korean skincare too because I just discovered that the cruelty free brand I've been using for a few years was recently bought by estee lauder. 😩 I also kinda feel like my skin progress has started to hit a plateau, so I'm looking to switch it up and hopefully elevate my skincare soon. I'm entirely new to Korean skincare, but I've been mostly looking into Cosrx recently.
@@maribart4237 So sorry for my late reply. I agree, and I have tried many of the products promoted by influencers, most which have ended up doing nothing/not helped at all (Glow recipe, for example..)... The products I stick to that always work great for my skin (reduce dryness, occational pimples, and unevenness): Double cleanse with Banila Co Zero cleansing balm + Purito From green deep foaming cleanser (only in the eveing, I use water in the morning), Acwell licorice toner (or iUnik rose galactomyces essential toner), COSRX snail essence, Manyo Factory Bifida Biome Concentrate Serum, COSRX cica cream (and Purito daily To-go sunscreen when the sun's back..). I live in a nordic country and have dry or dehydrated skin, and for me, more or less cutting out fragrance has made a difference. And consistently using a toner.
@@sydneybergeron4672 Yes, I used the ordinary for some time but also try to avoid it now that I know it's owned my estee lauder.. I have trien many different brands within korean skincare, and my favourite brands are COSRX, Purito and Acwell. 😊
About essential oils: I had both great and awful experiences. Back in the day I had fungal acne and I worked at a worldwide famous luxury skincare brand that uses a sh*t ton of EO on their products. Their products solved my condition quickly and my skin never looked better for about 2 years. After that period, I developed an allergy that goes on to this day, to all sorts of fragrances, limiting a lot my product choices.
This is probably my favourite video you have ever made James! well done. I would love to see this format again in the future. the skincare industry is in desperate need of these down-to-Earth perspectives... so controversial, yet comforting!
I use a tea tree oil and witch hazel burn ointment, on cooking burns and bug bites, that is magic. It is so soothing and works better than anything else I have found.
Oh phew I feel forgiven ...you are always my go to for skincare advice and my skincare routine has been revolutionised by following your advice as has my skin ...over the last few months people have been saying to me "ohhh but you look after your skin"!!! never had that before so thank you ...but good to know that a pick fest and a lavender essential oil gala won;t get me banned :) Love you xxxxx
As an adult I don't get bad acne, but I get lots of little spots that don't turn into anything. The cosrx clarifying treatment toner completely cleared them all and made my skin so much brighter
Cosrx are sooo good! Their sunscreen does wonders for my skin. Sometimes, if it looks a bit dull, I put it on and instantly brightens my skin. Redness - gone! ❤
We've got a hole in the ozone layer over Australia and HAVE to wear sunblock year round. Outdoor workers employers have to provide it & school kids are required to wear hats, sunblock & have huge shaded outdoor areas
Yes, but then those of use who live in northern England are not labouring under the same conditions, and don't need the same advice. You couldn't burn your skin in this country on an average day if you laid out naked all day covered in oil. Maybe a few days in summer when we have clear skies. Which doesn't happen that much. Australia is another matter and sunscreen and cover ups are non-negotiable.
You're very lucky. I'm a 50yo & as a child in the 70s mum (who's parents were from Devon & Liverpool) had 1 freckle turn into melanoma on her calf. She now has an oval hole about 4 × 6in with a single layer skin graft over her muscles. She didn't even sunbake. Pretty sobering thing to see as a kid.
I agree with the toner thing! The Asian or Asian influence kind, that is. I quit sheet mask after I realized I could just repeat apply toners, and I get the same results.
I don't apply sunscreen every 2 hours but I try to re-apply as much as I can depending on the intensity and duration of exposure. I agree with Dr. Maxfield and you 🥰.
The Pyunkang Yul essence toner is what helped my skin heal from a damaged skin barrier. Now, I use several toners, essences, essence toners, and waters.
my unpopular opinion is not everyone can reapply their sunscreen and even wear sunscreen. I have contact dermatitis and when I touch sunscreen with my hands, i get rashes a few days later. Also, I don't have the time to always reapply my sunscreen and especially since i have to wash my hands with soap, which is also sometimes im allergic to.
Since you talk about how important a moisturising toner is, could you make a videos about the best ones? 😊 Giving us a selection in price range and accessibility 🙏 I've used the Pixi Glow Mist toner for about 3-4 years and I love it, but I'm thinking about going over to the Ole Henriksen Dark Spots Toner (blue bottle), cause I have some sun spots that are annoying 🙈
My unpopular opinion is that I don't wash my face in the mornings. I have dry dehydrated skin. I double cleanse at night and then just splash my face with water in the mornings and go straight in with skin care. Not cleansing twice a day has made a huge difference in my hydration level.
Agree with your sunscreen synopsis. Golfers, tennis players, runners, and other people that have a healthy lifestyle out in the sun apply their sunscreen but don't obsessed with sun exposure.
We live outdoors in the desert - sunscreen face, ears, hands then I wear a sun protection long sleeve shirt to stay cooler as well as protected. Let's us hike, play golf and Pickleball all year.
Just my opinion but I think those of us who “obsess” over sunscreen is because we have had skin cancer or know someone who has. I’m a melanoma survivor and I religiously apply sunscreen because I don’t want it again.
I really love the pH balancing properties of toners, I feel like it helps calm and even out my skin tone. Atm I just use the really cheap Byphasse rose water toner at night and it is excellent
Honestly, Sarah Palmyra SAVED my skin. My skin barrier is so thin and delicate, and through seeing her on TH-cam shorts, I found products that healed my skin and now it is GLOWING. I'm still struggling with extreme dryness, but I just have to reapply moisturizer and SPF throughout the day. But she is THE GOAT.
I’m actually highly sensitive to hyaluronic acid and I tend to avoid products with high concentrations because it just makes my skin super red and itchy. Since switching to glycerine and aloe-based products, my skin is so much happier! I do hate that everything has HA in it these days because if you’re trying to avoid it, it’s really, really difficult.
@@jennifergregory65 yeah super frustrating and difficult to avoid. I use Clinique’s moisture surge spray and moisture concentrate serum and those are awesome 😊

5:01 couldn't agree more with this. I'm neurodivergent, and the way that's relevant for me when doing skincare is that 1) a lot of days I just can't do my skincare, let alone wear sunscreen, due to executive dysfunction but also sensory issues. But also 2) I hate the feeling of sunscreen on my skin, specially because I'm really oily and I sweat a lot. Maybe I just have to keep trying brands and sunscreens, but I don't think there'll be one that won't trigger my sensory issues at least a 1%. All this to say, and leaving the topic of how there should be more understanding towards neurodivergent people's challenges when keeping a routine aside, for the longest time I was shaming myself bc I wasn't wearing "three fingers" of sunscreen or whatever people always recommend. It was already hard for me to wear it in the first place, let alone wearing so much of it specially knowing I will have to reapply it and go through it all again. I try to use as much as I comfortably can but the shame you can feel coming from some skincare influencers really is there.
Just got my new COSRX package. Thanks for the discount! I use a washcloth, gently, as my physical scrub. Use of a cloth is an art. Hot and steamy just pressed against the face. Warm water with a gentle circular motion. The best way to get in the eyes and ears. Rub harder is you have a blemish. I hate the cold and a cloth in the winter is a way to wash without all the wet. Thoughts?
I always put on sunscreen before going out - but Im not religiously reaplying every 2 hours, cause usually I also have makeup over... I always pop my pimples when they got white heads since I get less scarring when I do it that way, and I have always had chubby cheeks, so one of my "self soothing techniques" is that I stroke my own cheeks when Im stressed. So COVID time was so hard for me when people preached not touching your face D:
I switch up almost my entire skincare routine in the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. I typically use a hyaluronic acid every day in the summer because I have combination skin and anything heavier than that will make my skin oily. In the winter, I use the cream that would normally go just under my eyes all over my face in the mornings and use a topical I get from my dermatologist for my dermatitis on the sensitive patches at night with that same cream from before all over the rest of it.
I agree wholeheartedly with Tina Tanaka! My hormonal acne refuses to fade if I don’t pop them myself. I do it gently and follow up with a tiny amount of aquaphor and it heals *so* much better than if I just leave it.
you and robert are the only two influencers i actually trust. you’re real and honest and relatable. doing a great job! thanks for these informative videos 🤗🤍
I love toners and yes, they are the one thing that really made a difference for my skin. With many essences or serums i dont see any change but with toners i do/did.
@@sheepylamby7320 Sure. My holy grail is the HaruHaru Rice toner. That made a huge difference for my skin. The scent is pretty strong, which i like very much, keep that in mind when you dont like scents in skincare (i believe there is an unscented one). And as my first toner, in the morning i use one on a cottonpad and after that the HaruHaru, which i tap on with my fingers, i use light ones like the Nacific Fresh Herb one, Green Tee toners or the Secret Key Fresh Nature. In the evening i only use one toner and because i only use an essence in the morning (and a serum at night) i love the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner, because it has more body to it than you average toner.
@@kemsari9969 which ones of those would be the hydrating, “dewy” types of toners or essences? I assume they do different things since you use different ones 😅
@@JasminMiettunen The HaruHaru is definitly hydrating and the Pyunkang Yul too. But i dont know if you can layer them infinetly because both are a little bit thicker. Tones like the Dear Klairs Daily Skin Hydrating Water you can layer a lot, i like this one too for my first morning toner. Milky toners should be hydrating as well, but i dont use those because my skin did not like two different ones, so i stopped trying them.
My acne prone skin just screamed at the idea of using just an oil cleanse and NOT REMOVING IT. 😂 I love the Lumene Cleansing Milk in the morning though, because it's so light and not so stripping.
I just want to say that i'm getting so overwhelmed with skin care. I thought i knew the basics, but now there are toners, tonics, essences, serums, cleansers for make up, cleansers for skin, spot treatments, vitamins, bha's, aha's and i just don't know anymore? So many products with 'good' active ingredients break me out, my skin can't stand sunscreen and i feel like the skin care that works for me is basic and not good enough in comparison to what i see online. I have normal skin with some texture, some redness and some pimples, but i find many skincare products to be so specific that i feel like they are not for me. I keep striving to make my skin better than it is now, but maybe i should just keep using what i'm using and be happy with the way my skin currently looks.
Who cares what is done online. Honestly, most reviews are done from one use because a real review would take a minimum of three weeks use. Do what works for you, and unless you are looking for specific information on a product or ingredient, don't look at the trends or whatever else. You can always go see an Esthetician for specific skin concerns if you need it, and they can help you.
@@jennramsey5016 That's true! Social media can make us feel like what we do or what we look like isn't good enough. I am a skin cancer survivor and you know what, I am still very active outdoors. I can't live my life in the shadows just because I was diagnosed. When did you start wearing it?
@@medc2592 I would say late 20s early 30s but I grew up in a beach town where I’d spend summers on the beach from when I was three with no protection.
Never heard of the rule of double cleansing in the morning. I always thought it was for the evening to wash away the sunscreen and /or makeup.
Same
Me too
Yeah i don't know why she said that, i thought everyone knows it already
I do that because it helps anti aging and it controls my skins oiliness and regulates it
So it's not a rule for the morning, but a lot of people tout it as a rule for oil cleansers as a whole.

Omg yessssss I learnt that from her toooo! Because no one sees your skin in that way ever!
This has been huge for me. I actually do my makeup with a mirror that isn't as good as some of my other mirrors because I'm less critical. I can still see if my makeup is blended correctly, if my coverage is even but I don't obsess over little discolorations and pores.
when my skin was super bad I would do my skin care in the dark to keep me from looking in the mirror lol

I always thought that double cleaning was SPECIFICALLY if you wore makeup and/or sunscreen. I didn't realize people were doing it always.
Right?! Why would anyone double cleanse if not wearing SPF/makeup?
I personally double cleanse like twice a week at least, because I do see improvement when I have breakouts. You can absolutely DC if you're not wearing makeup or sunscreen, if you feel like your skin looks more dirty than usual or just want to give a deeper cleanse then it's completely fine.
Totally agree on that, not that skincare doesn’t work but you can’t see the amazing results you should/would while being unhealthy.
I disagree there are people with poor diets/lifestyles with enviable skin. I think people underestimate the effects of genetics on skincare
I have this and dandruff which is really hard to control and also stop myself from scratching. Therefore making it all worse
SAME, im trying so hard to implement not touching anything but it’s so difficult. I just zone out and start picking at my skin anywhere something feels different.
Hardest thing to do .... i literally make holes in my face just trying to get rid of some inside pimples that I KNOW won't come out ....
I don’t have quite that but anxiety does make me pick at “textures”, that’s the biggest reason I started treating my keratosis pilaris, just so I'd stop picking at my arms lol and I'm seriously considering seeing a dermatologist about a single, harmless, nearly invisible little bump on my cheek that is driving me nuts when I feel it
It’s so ridiculously small I honestly don’t know if they can even do anything without causing bigger scarring than the actual issue, but man does it feel big in my head

Yep.
Then don't watch them lol 😂
Very true but it's also important to remember this is a generalization. Now mature skin is different from youth skin, but the key trait of mature skin is dryness (I have observed that people's skin commonly turn dry with age) and there are young people who already deal with severely dry skin. I for one do, to the point that many of the rich products mature skin people used would not create any issues on my skin and actually make my skin look better, as opposed to all the trouble said to commonly occur when youth skin is exposed to products for mature skin. Just adding my two cents here.
My mother instilled in me the proper use of quality skin care in my teens +20's. That's why I'm 43 looking 30 at best.
Thank you for the "not wearing sunscreen if the UV index is below 3" thing - so many people are absolutely fucking OBSESSED with sunscreen and on Reddit I keep getting roasted by people who insist you need to wear sunscreen every day even if I live in the UK. Omg Reddit is a viscous place haha
@@JamesWelsh I think you mean vicious not viscous (gloopy) 😂. But yes I agree!
The sesheido stick sunscreen works phenomenally over makeup. I definitely spelt the name wrong but ya

I have greasy skin and now I use a ceramide moisturizer and I LOVE IT - it leaves my skin kind of waxy feeling but I'll take that over a slick grease pit any day 😂

It's important to remind ourselves it's okay not to make it our whole lives, it's just a small part to better the quality of our life
“Not worrying about my skin actually helped it heal” - This is damn relatable! 🙌
@@lovrboi OP explained that it is beneficial for your skin though, just not for the calming effect that they were talking about in the video.
@@lovrboi when I researched online a few years ago I found that there are a few essential oils that can benefit the skin, including tea tree oil, rose oil, and lavender oil (like the op mentioned)
There are several and possibly even a bunch of essential oils that have skin benefits!
I like Tina's channel so much because not often do you have someone who speak about japanese products :D and she's got an amazing personality

I was looking for this comment. I tried it and no. Though, highlighter carefully placed did grow on me, at times.
110% dewy skin always makes my skin crawl cuz.... I just imagine my hair flying in that or struggling to put a shirt on or even my headphones that touch my face. Just a big no.
I don't think it looks greasy it just looks wet. Oil and water are different textures and look different from the outside.
Tbh I was scared to watch this video but you put it so nicely 🤣🤣
yes at least I am a ‘controlled pimple popper’ and always slap a patch on right after 😌 hehe
Thank you for the mention James!! 💗💗💗
My skin got so much better once I stopped double cleansing! I only double cleanse when I wear waterproof sunscreen and makeup.
I can’t get over how uncomfortable it is to wear sunscreen, on top of it being too damn expensive 😢😢😢😢
Edit: I found a cheap af sunscreen that I don't even feel,
Bloqueador Bahía Faces SPF90 by Portugal Labs in Lima Peru, I love that thing
I'm definitely guilty of popping pimples and was hoping that would be one of the opinions...Tina came through!! 🤣 Loved this video James!!
Thank you for saying this! I feel like these influencers may actually turn people away from sunscreen for fear of not "doing it right."
James, I literally love you. Your "perfection doesn't exist" intro has been making me laugh EVERY TIME for the past few months! Thank you for being such an amazing content creator!! Your videos and personality are one of my favorites here on YT. Please never stop being you!!
yes about life being bigger than just perfect skin. i used to obsess so much about my bad skin i forgot the other bad things going on in my life 😗✌
After so many years of using skincare, I realised that you just have to tailor to what is appropriate for your own skin, your personal preference and that you're using the product correctly.
Love the Hatomugi Skin Conditioner. You know what’s up
As an Asian living near the equator, sunscreen has only been a recent buzz here.
Exactly!! Sometimes I need to use a physical exfoliant.
So glad Tina said that! I thought I was crazy but seriously every time I leave a pimple alone it’s like my skin just scars over it and leaves a bump.

Cheers!

New haircut? Looking extra niche in this video James! 🤩I agree with just simple oil cleansing only in the morning too 🙂
Thank you!
So happy james shared he doesn‘t wear sunscreen if it isn‘t over 3 UV (factor? idk)
It has been around 0-1 UV for a while in germany and I just can‘t be bothered. Almost all sunscreens worsen my acne so I weigh the benefits against the downsides depending on the strength of UV.
It’s called UV index, but I agree, more sensible sunscreen education for people who live in the northern hemisphere! Sincerely, someone from Finland
Sis, share with us pls. I have NO IDEA how to find unbiased opinions, I like hearing from non influencers experience.
Their pimple patches are life changing
Honey Jar’s skin looks incredible! Love someone who tells you you don’t need a hundred different products (Also, amazing earrings)
Great video James and loving the new haircut :) sending love x
Always so happy to see a longer video from you! Loved hearing these hot takes from the pros, glad I'm not the only one who picks at their spots 😅
More environmentally friendly too
I don't apply sunscreen every 2 hours but I try to re-apply as much as I can depending on the intensity and duration of exposure. I agree with Dr. Maxfield and you 🥰.
The Pyunkang Yul essence toner is what helped my skin heal from a damaged skin barrier. Now, I use several toners, essences, essence toners, and waters.
Lol I’m guilty of telling everyone their skincare routine is pointless without using sunscreen
Same but sometimes it is lol . I live in a country where it's mostly sunny and hot so yeah using sunscreen is important here
Yes I agree with Tina with picking on pimples. I left one alone, put a salicylic acid based product over and got an ugly scar. I wish I popped that 😄
I don't use spf during the fall and winter if the uv index isn't above 3 either. There's barely any sun up here in Sweden during winter anyway.
James can you please do a video on toners (including budget options), I suddenly know I need one now!
my unpopular opinion is not everyone can reapply their sunscreen and even wear sunscreen.
😊 Giving us a selection in price range and accessibility 🙏
I've used the Pixi Glow Mist toner for about 3-4 years and I love it, but I'm thinking about going over to the Ole Henriksen Dark Spots Toner (blue bottle), cause I have some sun spots that are annoying 🙈
My unpopular opinion is that I don't wash my face in the mornings. I have dry dehydrated skin. I double cleanse at night and then just splash my face with water in the mornings and go straight in with skin care. Not cleansing twice a day has made a huge difference in my hydration level.
Same...only water in the morning
Agree with your sunscreen synopsis. Golfers, tennis players, runners, and other people that have a healthy lifestyle out in the sun apply their sunscreen but don't obsessed with sun exposure.
Exactly. I’m guilty of it too but I would literally avoid the sun at all costs until I got my dogs. Out of pure vanity!
We live outdoors in the desert - sunscreen face, ears, hands then I wear a sun protection long sleeve shirt to stay cooler as well as protected. Let's us hike, play golf and Pickleball all year.
@@JamesWelsh 🤣🤣🤣
@@patti1044 I'm just learning Pickleball, I love it!
This is me. Skin doesn't like much HA either (minimal concentration and largest molecular weight please) and it's in everything.
@@jennifergregory65 yeah super frustrating and difficult to avoid. I use Clinique’s moisture surge spray and moisture concentrate serum and those are awesome 😊
@@nirvanaquatics I'll have to look into this. I also have an allergy to coconut/coconut-derived ingredients. Beauty & skin care shopping is a nightmare.
YES!! More props to toners! Serums are nice and powerful but they were always an extra for treating something and people should stop snobbing toners.
Please do this kind of video more James. It's refreshing. I love it!
Very interesting to hear different people’s unpopular opinions, and your take on them!😌
you and robert are the only two influencers i actually trust. you’re real and honest and relatable. doing a great job! thanks for these informative videos 🤗🤍
I love toners and yes, they are the one thing that really made a difference for my skin. With many essences or serums i dont see any change but with toners i do/did.
Could you share what toner(s) you use? I was really interested in that tip from the video and would like to know what people are using.
@@kemsari9969 thank you!
I wrote my initial comment 3 weeks ago and since then, I stopped consuming so much skincare content and I feel way better about my boring skincare routine. While it is a great thing that social media can educate us and help us improve our lives, attempting to stay educated and up to date all the time is tiring and sometimes it's better to not know everything all the time
100% on the hydrating essence. Besides that, a good cleanser, moisturizer and spf, the more crap I put on my face the more problems I cause.
there is SOOO much to talk about with all of these skincare opinions/topics, but for me, >especially< with the dewy/greasy one. ooof. i could go on!!
I love Doctorly! I'm the geeky type, so I appreciate the longer explanations.
