The women waste pickers of Pimpri Chinchwad have won a rare battle: they were awarded Rs. 7.5 crores in a first-of-its-kind legal victory against the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and its contractors in August 2023. The win was ironic because it was secured against a municipal corporation that has been consistently feted as one of India’s wealthiest municipal corporations. Not only does Pimpri Chinchwad have a 5-star rating from the Swachh Bharat Mission as a Garbage Free City, it also ranks as the top municipal corporation in Maharashtra, ahead of both Pune and Mumbai, for e-governance. This is a story of determination, dignity, and desire, pieced together through years of struggle by valiant women who are relegated to the bottom of the social pyramid. Thanks Vandana and team for covering such an important story... 👍👍
It's a matter of shame that the garbage picking ladies had to wait as many as twelve years to get their dues...
I salute all of them and bow down to the courage, persistence and resilience shown by them over the years...
It was heartbreaking to hear the ordeal and hardship that each one of them had faced..
Congratulations to Dr Baba Adhav and his organization, the concerned municipal commissioner during whose tenure this matter got resolved and everyone else who stood firm with these ladies..
And last but not the least, a tight slap in the face of the concerned officers of the PCMC, the local corporator, the local MLA, the local MP, the guardian minister of Pimpri Chinchwad, who deprived these poor ladies from their legal dues for almost twelve years...
