    floppolyric:
    Sweet files are made of bits
    Tracks made of sectors tied up in clusters
    I travel the FAT and directories
    everybody is looking for data
    Some of them want to be opened
    Some of them want to be written to
    Some of them want to be checksummed
    Some of them want to be removed
    Sweet files are made of bits
    Changes in flux, frequency modulated
    I seek to a track, look for boundaries
    everybody is looking for data
    Put my head down,
    Move my head out, read the FAT
    Move my head in, find the track
    Spin the motor, read the bytes
    Move my head out, read the FAT
    Move my head in, find the track
    Spin the motor, write the bytes
    Lift my head up
    Some of them want to be opened
    Some of them want to be written to
    Some of them want to be checksummed
    Some of them want to be removed
    (solo to end)
    All there is to it =) right?

      To be fair to the 90s, this hardware used to be expensive. Now people will pay you to take it from them.

      I remember there was some software on the Amiga that used the floppy drive for making sounds. But this ruined the drive for its normal purpose, so you can imagine, that it was hardly used. However, this means, that we DID try hard back then ;)

    Fun fact, the Floppotron is the only known device to ever successfully negotiate peace between Skynet, Borg, Necrons, and organic life.

    Something to notice: The lead has vibrato on certain notes in addition to the bends. A lot of work was put in for that little bit of detail.

    • @Aweoe
      @Aweoe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not really. The person who made the MIDI file puts those in there (not that hard) then the floppy drives just play whats in the MIDI file. Not that much work (at all)

      @@Aweoe And how exactly do you program a scanner to play a MIDI file? Vibrato is usually defined as an effect field on the note. So he actually had to program many effects like vibrato and the bends to send the correct instructions to the scanner. Still much more effort than "just downloading it".

      they hated the unavoidable sounds mecahnical devices are prone to make - i bet any engineer would laugh in tears realizing these annoying sounds are just a perspective issue :D (this ginius makes music with them!^^ - ofc only works because it's recognitionable music and they still kinda suck as instruments, but it's astonishing non-the-less!)

    • @crestfallensunbro6001
      @crestfallensunbro6001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I think it technically is acoustic? Because it's making the sound mechanically as opposed to creating an electrical signal which gets converted to sound

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, that's all a bit of a red herring at this level, considering that you a speaker is needed to convert electricity to sound, which works by vibrating a cone with a magnet (eg, that's a mechanical movement at the end)
      Floppy drives use stepper motors, but hard drives typically use voice coils (these are called voice coils because they're basically the same as what's inside a speaker/microphone)
      So... Yeah. It all gets really muddy at that level...

      @eddiehimself 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It would certainly be a lot of work setting the seek/printer heads to play the right pitches and programming the interface to feed the right data to the hardware. But once you've done that you could basically just write the songs like you're doing them on TuxGuitar or something. In fact you probably could use TuxGuitar if you set it up to play MIDI files lol.

    • @ravidelia8864
      @ravidelia8864 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@eddiehimself Probably the biggest issue would be interfacing, and I wouldn't be shocked if there's already a python library out there to handle it. After that a few sample pitches could be measured, and a best fit curve found. Boom, pretty much all done from there.

    And the seven files
    Everybody's searching for something
    Sweet disks are made of this
    Who am I to reformat?

    I am not going to beg, but rather suggest doing an extended version of, at least, this song. I just can't stop listening to it and I would prefer listening for it on repeat. I might do that myself simply because I prefer your rendition even to the original (probably due to how synthetic and awesome it sounds).

      I _really_ appreciate your phrasing here, combining the actual sentiment of being able to both appreciate a musical piece better in person due to improved audio quality that can't quite get captured digitally... along with the irony that even in person, this is all still purely *digital*, being controlled by the code being run by a computer! 🤘
      A very deep, humorously-poetic sentiment, one could say. lol

    Mold is better, use my enzymes

    No cheese wants to be called rancid
