Not really. The person who made the MIDI file puts those in there (not that hard) then the floppy drives just play whats in the MIDI file. Not that much work (at all)
@@Aweoe And how exactly do you program a scanner to play a MIDI file? Vibrato is usually defined as an effect field on the note. So he actually had to program many effects like vibrato and the bends to send the correct instructions to the scanner. Still much more effort than "just downloading it".

i dont think that all ppl who is watching those videos really understand how geniously u are, how many talents togheter u have to do this.. is crazy.. rythm, music in general, programming, art, creativity, patience, electronic, dexterity, computer engineering.. and so much more.. i'm speechless.. u are a real genius.
i wouldn't label them as genius, but people with a lot of free time and dedication, they can already pre-post process a great part of the melody (with tabs) and load them to the software running them which i suppose must be loaded in an Arduino or some kind of small pc, the hard part should be the arrangement of the hardware.
holy FUCK make an original comment for ONCE this exact comment is on every single fucking video with music played by unconventional instruments and it's NEVER been funny
I think it technically is acoustic? Because it's making the sound mechanically as opposed to creating an electrical signal which gets converted to sound
Well, that's all a bit of a red herring at this level, considering that you a speaker is needed to convert electricity to sound, which works by vibrating a cone with a magnet (eg, that's a mechanical movement at the end) Floppy drives use stepper motors, but hard drives typically use voice coils (these are called voice coils because they're basically the same as what's inside a speaker/microphone) So... Yeah. It all gets really muddy at that level...
But it's not electronica in fact, these are just drives making sounds. Nothing more. They are driven by electronica though. Just like any music player.
You build a library for the drives and then feed in the music notes. Play any tune that you have the music for. Write a midi interface and it's even less time.
@@mike_van_in I know nothing of midi but I figured this could be done. Painstaking work at the start. After that it's just a keyboard. Every note or beat has a device to turn on at a given duty cycle.
It's probably a one time initial effort to build all the libraries for the communication between these drives. Once that's done, he/she could probably just feed the notes in and let it play as defined.
It would certainly be a lot of work setting the seek/printer heads to play the right pitches and programming the interface to feed the right data to the hardware. But once you've done that you could basically just write the songs like you're doing them on TuxGuitar or something. In fact you probably could use TuxGuitar if you set it up to play MIDI files lol.
@@eddiehimself Probably the biggest issue would be interfacing, and I wouldn't be shocked if there's already a python library out there to handle it. After that a few sample pitches could be measured, and a best fit curve found. Boom, pretty much all done from there.
This is the best comment here and only 92 now 93 comments. That's disappointing! Should be at least as many likes as the views. Man people have really lost their taste!
This is a new genre of music! The amount of work & time to get everything going on the bit level. Please keep doing this because if you build bigger, it should be classed as one of the wonders of human invention & use something that it never wasn't even intended to do. This is a brilliant example of human creativity! I love it!🙂❤️

I am not going to beg, but rather suggest doing an extended version of, at least, this song. I just can't stop listening to it and I would prefer listening for it on repeat. I might do that myself simply because I prefer your rendition even to the original (probably due to how synthetic and awesome it sounds).
@CrazyLegs Well, for one I'm not a native English speaker (I'm fluent in written English, but not so good; also, accent). And I don't really know the lyrics by heart, unfortunately. :)
As a lowkey casual audiophile I'd pay money to listen to this orchestrated in person. Copies and electronic translations simply can't convey the pure bliss of analog.
I _really_ appreciate your phrasing here, combining the actual sentiment of being able to both appreciate a musical piece better in person due to improved audio quality that can't quite get captured digitally... along with the irony that even in person, this is all still purely *digital*, being controlled by the code being run by a computer! 🤘 A very deep, humorously-poetic sentiment, one could say. lol Whether it was your intention or not, I offer praise 😁😊
I love you, you're a new kind of artist. Who knew, 200 years ago, that we would do music with machines' noises ? You're a genius for using those floppy drives as a kind of harpsichord, or synthetizers.
You know how some (many) people have an irrational (totally justified) fear of shopping for a home and finding the attic filled with porcelain dolls? I like to imagine this will be the technical equivalent, all these half functional devices arranged around the room, a young couple born in 2010 walking in, seeing the room, and leaving "NOPE" never realizing the magic of this setup Bonus points if the floppotron plays either Daisy Bell, or Stereo Heart

And a sh ton of money
all i can say is revenge of the nerds..
i wouldn't label them as genius, but people with a lot of free time and dedication, they can already pre-post process a great part of the melody (with tabs) and load them to the software running them which i suppose must be loaded in an Arduino or some kind of small pc, the hard part should be the arrangement of the hardware.
@@SHF40k How, all the hardware apart from the arduinos are obsolete and could be found free
I'm not sure I believe that the sounds are actually generated by that hardware, tbh

This strangely highlights the beauty of the original composition. You almost made an acoustic sounding instrument out of electronica. Bravo!
I think it technically is acoustic? Because it's making the sound mechanically as opposed to creating an electrical signal which gets converted to sound
Well, that's all a bit of a red herring at this level, considering that you a speaker is needed to convert electricity to sound, which works by vibrating a cone with a magnet (eg, that's a mechanical movement at the end)
Floppy drives use stepper motors, but hard drives typically use voice coils (these are called voice coils because they're basically the same as what's inside a speaker/microphone)
So... Yeah. It all gets really muddy at that level...
@@KuraIthys I think the key difference is that an acoustic instrument doesn't out put something you can put through a standard amplifier.
But it's not electronica in fact, these are just drives making sounds. Nothing more. They are driven by electronica though. Just like any music player.

This probably took forever to program, but it's pretty cool lol
The first few seconds really are indistinguishable from the original. Perfect sound!

A very deep, humorously-poetic sentiment, one could say. lol
