I grew into my teens watching Roller Derby. Flat Track is okay, but this is classic. These gals were pre women's equality movement. They definitely proved that women are NOT the weaker sex! I wish some tough gals would bring it back. Leon Russell even wrote a song about it. "Stars above, I fell in love, with the Queen of the Roller Derby". Good times.
To think back about my adolescent dreams about the Bombers. My mom loved to skate when I was younger. She had legs like Betty Grable and could have been a pin up. But she could be hell on wheels too! My dad and none of his friends could ever beat mom. I guess it's why I was such a big Bombers fan. On a count of mom. Ironically, no matter how patient, and how hard she tried I could not skate to save my life. My sister, Karen, got my mom's skating skills. She also took ballet lessons. Instead of racing the other kids, Karen combined the two. Karen is in her 70s now and she can still pull off some graceful ballet moves including a grand jeté, and a changement!
