  • Roller Game of the Week with the L.A. T-Birds and Texas Outlaw from the Olympic Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles.
Your announcer for this classic 1967 game is Dick Lane. Please note this presentation is from an old kinescope. Our video is courtesy of Scott Stephens, author of the book “Rolling Thunder”, The Golden Age of Roller Derby and the Rise and Fall of the L.A. T-Birds. www.amazon.com...

Would like to see more of the games that Dick Lane announced. It's really hard to find many of his calls.

I was the biggest fan of the Thunderbirds. Use to see them all the time at the Olympic Auditorium in L.A. and Anaheim Convention Center. It was so cool....

I prefer the '60s and '70s roller derby matches vs the '10s version - more speed, more blocking, more fighting (even if its scripted)

i still believe that Rolley Derby would be every bit as popular as football in US, possibly the world (Japan for sure) if played seriously with the top skaterbatheletes. this right here…art. just beautiful to watch

I started watching The T-Birds as a kid in the early 60's and loved it. One day a game went past my bedtime and so next morning I tried looking it up in the morning paper and nothing. There wasn't even a league standing. So I ask my dad why isn't there anything about Roller Derby in the sport section. He said it's not a real sport like Baseball, it's like pro wrestling. I was bummed, it was like finding out there's no Santa. I probably should have figured it out considering they always played the same few teams. I still watched it but not with the same enthusiasm.
BTW That was the first time I read a newspaper other then the comic section.

I think many of us as kids had similar experiences. At times, it came so close to being legit. I badly wanted to see the league standings in the LA Times. When I discovered Santa Claus isn't real, I continued to love the sport for the speed and excitement, but like you, I was less enthusiastic about it.

I had similar sad "revelations" back in the mid-'60s. I wondered why the T-Birds always played at home and were never on the road against the other teams. I continued to watch the games religiously each week, though! However, I also remember that the 'L.A. Times' often, for a while, at least, would give the scores of the T-Bird games, and also wrestling results, from the Olympic! They were tiny bits of column on the back page, probably used as space-filler. Back around 1971, I recall seeing Roller DERBY standings in a copy of the 'New York Times.' That made my day, but never saw those again!

Classic Dick Lane! He was the voice of the T-Birds when I was a kid. Also it’s such a treat to see this much if a game from the mid-60s! We are so fortunate that this video tape record survived! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Love this game of the week. Shirley Hardman really knew how to get the T-Bird fans going. Loved Terri Lynch, such a strong skater. Judy Sowinski and Liz Hernandez were my favorite Thunderbirds (they all were great!) Norma Rossner was trouble for the t-birds, enjoyed watching her skate. Lastly, who could forget Sally Ann Vega? Great skater too!

After the 1960s, Liz would come back from time to time as a "comissioner" role in Roller Games. After it all folded not too much is known about her whereabouts or even if she is still alive. Backmin 2001 was the last time I had heard anything about Liz only she was somewhere in the Los Angeles area.

We see T-Birds' 2'-11' mascot Little Angie (Angelo Rossitto) in the infield. He had a long movie career spanning 60 years, and even made a run for Mayor of Los Angeles in the '40s! He passed away in 1991 at the age of 83.

they used to air TBirds weekly at 1 pm every Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee Wi. in the early to mid 70s, maybe before that. Never missed a week. Sent money for merchandise i never got. Anyhow i polled other people my age (59-62) to name ONE old roller derby player. Four remembered and it was Ronnie Reigns 1, 747 3. there is NO video of 747. and thats really, really sad. that woman was money
