I propagated some bearded irises in one of my classes, and got to take one home; it's about to bloom! They're used as landscaping at my college in LA, and they grow with no problems (even with the aphids that like to hang out on them).
Bearded Irises, Oh, I love them ! They are so easy to maintain. Champagne Elegance is very elegant. I haven’t seen that one yet. Thank you for sharing. Enjoy your Irises.
I adore irises, they are the Queen of the late Springtime garden. Their blooms, their scent, their foliage and solid growing temperment, all top notch. Mine have increased with every year, given me nothing but joy Neighbor wants a few, I've never divided mine, so your confirmation that July/August is the month for it, was a welcome reminder, Rachel! Thanks! 🌱
@@GardeningatDouentza Hi Rachel! You know I went back thru my IG photos, and while I had lots of my Dutch Iris, I only found a couple of the Bearded. I prolly have some bearded iris photos on my old phone, but that's dead now. My fav iris is the one by my mailbox, that I bought from a catalogue. The "Mob" are pretty but simple purples. I got them 20 or so years ago, from an ancient couple who had rows of them in front of their farm. The land around their farm had become an industrial area, they had sold their land off piecemeal. I drove past their home on the regular on the way to my classes at the college for years. One day I stopped and asked if I could buy a few from them. They graciously gave me several. The couple and their rows of iris are long gone now, their house is boarded up abandoned. But in the Mob a bit of their history lives on.
I love irises, especially the blue ones which remind me of my grand dad, whom used to grow them in his garden and I as a child used to smell them and ask some as cut flower for my house. Thanks for the care tips.
Wow! Thanks so much Rachel. I'll feature my large pots full of none blooming irises in a video tomorrow. I have two 25/40 gallon pots full of foliage, but no blooms because of what, I am not doing for my pots, full of irises. Starting tomorrow, the day after Memorial Day, here in the states, 28 May 2019, I'll be dividing and repotting them all. Not sure how many I'll end up with.😅 Thanks again and Happy growing
Bearded Iris are considered difficult? Weird. Growing up in Ohio, they were planted in the front bed and got little to no care (other than a new layer of hardwood mulch in the spring) and flowered beautifully every year. I know for certain I had to divide them several times because they got too large. (I know, hard to imagine that a clump of irises can be too large)
Same here in sunny Portugal. I grow several varieties and they flower reliably with very little care in my poor sandy soil with no mulch as the rhizomes like to be exposed to the sun. Lots of divisions to give away to friends. Probably the easiest plants I have in my garden.
@@GardeningatDouentza Sun in Ohio? Goodness no, northeast Ohio isn't known for being sunny. 😉 Probably on par with, maybe a little more than, where you are.
One of my favourite plants - great video! Advice please..... I had to lift some of mine now and it is the end of autumn here (winters 5 to 28 degrees C with some frost) .. can they be stored till planting time and how should I prepare and store them?
Thank you for watching and your comment. I think you are going to have to replant your iris now. I have planted iris rhizomes in autumn and they've been okay. Sometimes needs must.
will do ...thank you so much for your reply. This month of perennials idea is FANTASTIC! thanks a LOT!!!!!. I always follow your orchid videos but this is going to help me a lot.
In the tropics the bearded irises do struggle but we do grow "walking irises", so not really surprise by the choice, they are a classic architectural plant.
@@GardeningatDouentza ahh I see. I live in Florida and I dont have full sun to offer so I gues they wouldnt do that well :( also, off topic question, but for bacteria in orchids, what would you use? They're in a greenhouse and theres no pets there so I wouldnt worry about that part, but I dont know what to use. I bought dyathine and thymol. Is there anything you recommend?
Well, some leaves will brown naturally anyway especially as the season goes on. I will publish a new video on planting and dividing irises in just a few hours and maybe you will find this useful.
Bearded iris did especially well where I grew up in Montana. They would just sort of grow everywhere. Now I live in Houston and I think it's just a bit too warm for them. They grow champagne elegance in a parking lot I pass to get to my train stop, very lovely. Here, they stick to to dietes vegeta. I love the huge clumps they form with the long sword leaves and dainty, but long flower spikes. My only issue is that the city manages them terribly. They usually cut them down to a about a foot tall in mid to late spring and cut all the flowers away. It's infuriating because if they didn't do that, the streets would be lined with elegant blooms all over the city. But nope! You just get big "stumps" of green.
Why not write your city a letter about this? Sure, it may be dismissed, but if it's not, think of all the labor you've saved your city and all the beauty you've created! 🌱
Rachael; You failed to mention the *Wonderful fragrance of Bearded Iris ! As a child I was always sticking my nose in them & Mom would keep a vase filled on the Dining Room Table :) My Favorites were the 2-tone Blues. Here in Memphis, Tennessee we have a Huge Botanical Garden / Collection of Iris: www.memphisbotanicgarden.com/iris-garden ps. the CC works..
Yes, I did forget to mention the scent. That was because 'Champagne Elegance' doesn't have a scent. It's great about the CC. I did leave you several messages about them and how they are even back even on that epiphyllum video where they first absconded. It was some kind of TH-cam error but I'm glad it's fixed.
Bearded Iris will always be the favorite of all perennials, there's just nothing quite like them, lovely video
They are quite special. Thank you for watching
Those flowers look so great! They are so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing :)

I have always loved an Iris! In my younger days I grew miniature Iris which were vigorous growers with show stopping blooms!
They are beauties ❤

I think it's a lovely plant if you have the right conditions.
Beautiful! My bearded irises are in full bloom as I post here in New York, USA. Much love & thank you for your video.

Ah
I'm in Virginia (Shenandoah Valley ) and even the rizomes I throw out into the fence row take a hold and take off with no care at all.
I'm convinced, i will have to get some!

There are lots of nice irises actually 😅
So upset I can't grow these in zone 7, Nw Florida. There has to be a way. Any ideas? Thanks for sharing - I'm jealous!
It's best to grow what suits your climate. Sorry, I have no clever tricks
Do you grow canna lily? Iris and canna lilys are some of my favorites!
I just grow a few cannas. They aren't hardy here so won't be included in this series. They are gorgeous if you have the sun for them.

We have the wild yellow iris, we call them pig flowers because you can make little pigs with the seedpods (and match sticks 😁
Is that the one that grows in water? It is native in Ireland too.
By the way, I post a photo of our hedgerows in May in the Community Page of my TH-cam recently. I love the neighbouring hedgerows in May.
