    Very helpful video. Was wondering what kind of mulch to use in Iris beds. And if you would suggest any other plants that could be planted nearby. I have a very neglected iris bed that I am trying to revive.

      Use what is readily available in your area. For me it's pine straw/ bark mulch. Hostas are good companion plants if it's a shadier area.

      @@Dr.Warren I was thinking Shasta daisies, coneflowers, salvia, columbine. It’s an all sun area. As long as I give them some space the Iris should be okay?

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Dr. I’m in the process of splitting my irises, and as I was cleaning the rhizomes a bit to see if bugs are invading, I began to second guess the size I’ve trimmed the rhizomes to. Is there a ‘too small’ size? I don’t expect them to flower next spring. I’m in central MI. Thank you.

      Not really a too small. They should all eventually leaf and flower out given enough time and healthy.

    What do I do to keep my iris from falling over? They always make huge flowers, but then fall over when they fill with water the first time it rains.

    Thanks so much for this video. Could you please tell me how many rhizomes should I plant together?

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the look you are going for. If you want them in mass you will need several per square foot.

    Dear Doctor,
    I have a long and narrow patch of dirt on the side of the house next to the wall of my garage. It gets the most sun in the morning until 11am. I’m in SoCal. In your video you said that it needs a lot of Sun, almost all day. Will the Irises doing ok there ? Thanks

      I have some in part-full shade. They will grow but in my personal experience they do not get as full and lush in that setting.

    When do I divide in zone 6a? and how do I know if a rhizome is a dud?

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could do it now. If the bulbs are black or mushy they are dead.

    I was recently reading to fertilize again in august. I am in zone 6. Do you recommend. When is a good time to divide.

      It's not a bad idea if you are not using a slow release prill

    Do you remove the spent flower stalks as soon as the flowers are done, then cut back the leaves later (when they get half brown)?

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can do it either way. It is not going to hurt the plant to go ahead and dead head the flowers as long as you are not trying to collect seed.

    The tips of the leaves are turning yellow. Its the first of July here in southern south dakota. Also is it too late to fertilize? This is my first time growing iris. They were given to me last fall and I looked up how to plant them but other than that I dont know very much about them. Also I noticed the ground around them breaking up and I was told its from moles in the yard. Will they destroy my iris? And if so how do I get rid of them? Can i get rid of the moles humanely?

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There is such a thing as mole traps where I believe you can relocate them and it doesn't kill them. Moles eat worms, grubs, etc so they will not directly damage your irsh but will disturb the root zone. Being as far north as you are you can probably still fertilize and it be of benefit for the plant.

    Is miracle grow garden soil consider OK to improve my clay like soil for my irises. If not. what should I use. I've been told that I never let nitrogen levels on fertilizers be more than 4. What do you believe. Thank you for any info

    • @Dr.Warren

      It should definitely help. Anything organic will help. Not USDA organic but decomposing material if that makes sense?

      I only water mine if we are in a drought. They are very drought tolerant.

      They make stakes to hold them up. Check the comments I might have left a link for a person to get some?
