My father died last year, and my mom is dying. I'm 58 years old, and the idea of becoming an orphan is gut wrenching.
I was maybe 14 years old when this came out, my mother died when I was 9 then my father the year after ( I think of a broken heart) my brother passed away 4 years after so this song has a lot of resonance to me and I cannot help but tear up whenever I hear it. It is a beautifully written and performed song.
So sorry that you had these sad losses in such quick succession. I hope the time has helped ease the pain.

A beautiful and heartbreaking song. Life happens while you are making plans, in the end everyone is alone in one sense or another. This song endures because part of the nature of life is tragedy.

My dad died in 2004 at the age of 88 and my mom died 3 years later at the age of 87. No one knows what it's like to lose your parents until you lose them. It still makes no sense to me that my parents aren't around and that I can't call them and talk to them. It's a very bizarre reality that I can't quite explain.
A friend of mine just passed two weeks ago at the age of 59. His son is an only child. While he's an adult, almost 22, I've kind of taken it upon myself to make sure the kid is OK. Being an only child he's going through this alone.
When my dad passed in 2020 at 83, we knew it was coming, the signs were there so we weren't taken by surprise, but it was my brother's death 9 days later that really hit us hard. Still makes me want to punch things when I think of him.

@@Lightmane Yes, but she's a mess. A friend of mine went to the viewing and she was so doped up that she didn't recall he visited her husband in the hospital. The next day at the funeral, she didn't recall him showing up at the viewing the night before. The kid is turning out to be stronger than we all thought.
Well, I was only 11 when this came out, not old enough yet to become depressed about the lyrics. But wow, this was on the radio EVERY hour. Kinda glad I wasn't older.

Hi George, been a while you ok? I remember we mentioned Gilbert O'Sullivan in a previous reaction chat ... then boom he appears in a Daniel reaction! Pity that it was this song, in that it was noticeable at the end that D didn't say are there any other songs of his worth checking out ... so looks like he's been put off him for life !
This was sooo popular. The combination of the cheerful tune with the self-pitying lyrics just...worked. It was his first "hit" at least in the US. For me, it was with some relief that his hits just kept coming after that; I chose to believe they all had the same narrator, who recovered and went on to have an interesting life.

This is a live version of the studio recorded song but it comes very close to it. I was 10 yrs old when it came out in the early 70s. I loved it then as i still do today.
Like many of the incredible ballads from the 70's This song was a real stunner. Even the macho guys when I was a teen silently admitted it was genuinely great , and truly a piece of poetry in song.
This has always been one of my favorite songs. It's a moving testimony to how life always challenges us and we really can't rely on anyone else but ourselves. Watching your reaction showed me how moving the lyrics are. As many times as I've heard it, I still cry thinking about my family and my life.
I was 16 when this came out and like others of my generation I know every word of every song he wrote at this time. We just loved him.
One of the best lyricists of his generation. "Matrimony" and another quirky piece called "Wakka Doo Wakka Day" are all very clever ones.

I was a senior in high school when it came out. Many people were taken with it; I think it was a Number One hit. "Out Of The Question" is very good also.
Damiano54, It WAS indeed a #1, and stayed at #1 the longest time in 1972 to be considered by some charts the #1 Song of 1972, Even top 10 of the entire DECADE [70's]. On ALL charts [e.g Billboard it was #2 of the entire year 1972 tieing with number of weeks at #1 with First Time - Reberta Flack. I always thought Billboard got those two songs "reversed" as the #1 Song of 1972.

Love this song. I was in 8th grade, and because I'd heard this on the radio I bought the album that it came from. Listened to it until I wore it out. Never bought it again, but it's remained a song I turn up when it comes on the radio (or on TH-cam) for half a century.
I don't know much about Gilbert O'Sullivan. but I did learn through a short documentary video about him, that he's probably one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, with literally hundreds and hundrieds of songs stored away as paper files.
An amazing crafter of words and music and emotional sculptures.

You pick a good one again.He like it because of his voice and the message in the song because so many people have this problem but so many people don't know what will happen in the future. His Parents are passed and so are mind. have been married now for twenty years.

I've always loved this song. I remember hearing it when I was a little kid, too young to understand the lyrics. But it is a beautiful and sad song. His song Clair is another great song, and it is happier.
I saw a program on TV a few years ago where a mother and her grown daughter were getting a music award valued, probably to sell. The mother mentioned Gilbert O'Sullivan was her daughter Clair's Godfather. Imagine having a song written about you...
There is a video with the actual subject Clair and she discusses her Uncle Raymond (his real name) and the controversy over an adult grown male discussing his love for another man’s young child.
Thank you Dan for listening to Alone Again, Naturally, I love Gilbert O'Sullivan. This song helped me after a break up a few years ago when I needed something sad to listen to and some of his other songs like Get Down and Matrimony helped me to bounce back again.

One of the most depressing pop songs ever but surprising catchy and really well done. I remember this song Seasons In The Sun by Terry Jacks about a dying man that had this weird poppy arrangement and just was discordant. At least this has musical integrity and the vocals are appropriate. Nice song.
What about “At 17”?! Wow. That was depressing. Or “Ode to Billy Joe”? Sigh. Good stuff.

Jeez, these songs people are recalling made me realize the 70’s may have been great for hard rock, prog rock and metal. But pop music in that decade really sucked. Don’t even get me started about disco. That was a different load of crap altogether.

This one escalated so quickly before the first verse is over. I’ve heard this song several times but the seriousness of it always takes my breath away each time I hear it. A clip of this chorus was in Stuart Little 2 and I thought it was catchy so I was quite shocked when I looked up the song and kid me learned how intense this song actually is.

Nothing Rhymed is one of the best lyrical masterpieces by this artist imo. I am sure Gilbert himself would concur with me.
This is a very Sad song, but it's a Great song.
I always thought this song had a Strong John Lennon sound.
It does have away of taking you back in time, all of those memories come flooding back to the forefront.

It was like a Beatle song so it opens yo up to it, then it plants that depth charge deep in your psyche and in an hour the radio would play it again.
Great song from that era. His song "Claire" is also nice. I'd also recommend Albert Hammond's "It Never Rains in California", Climax's "Precious and Few" and Terry Jacks' "Seasons in the Sun". Still waiting for you to delve into Suzi Quatro.

Wildfire is an all-time classic!!! Every note is tremendous. YT has a great longer version that is so beautifully done by MMM that it brings tears each time, taken from a live performance on a country-western show. He stills plays it well today.

I was four when the song peaked on the charts and I was very affected by it. Even a very young child can understand the clear lyrics and the idea of death. Even at such a young age I always thought about the line about his mother dying and he crying all day and how scary it was to think of your parent dying when you are a child. Flash forward just 22 years and there I was, crying all day at the loss of my mom who I was extremely close to. She was too young to go - and I was too young to deal with something like that. I was simply not prepared and I thought about this song.
Great reaction as usual , Daniel. Timing is incredible, as Easter gives us hope following the sadness and grief of Good Friday. One of the toughest, saddest songs ever. Remember it well from my childhood.

I was 12 when this came out, and it meshed so well with my self-pity and depression. Strangely enjoyable song, but it could bring on sadness as much as it could relieve it.

This here is a sad ass song. Perhaps the only song I know which is practically a suicide note. Beautiful, touching song though. But check this out. For years and years, I have tried to make it a point, on Monday mornings, to post something uplifting...because I had read that most suicides occur at 9 am on Monday. Hatred of one's job, I suspect. I hoped that the practice would lift all boats, so to speak, mine included. "Sunday Morning Sunshine" by Harry Chapin is a sunny Monday song. It might be a good practice to have Happy Mondays or something of the sort. Fridays have a different vibe. Might be cool to connect day with song. "Monday, Monday" is a great song, of course, for a Thursday.

No Daniel, people should not have to get through these things by themselves, they need to know that there is help, professional help. Many suicides result from people trying to handle depression on their own. We need to get rid of the negative attitude toward mental heath.

Daniel, your video came up on a search for this song title. It would be fair to say I know the song back to front. So I was very interested to watch your reaction. One thing that is clear is that you have an amazing appreciation of music, and empathy with a song's lyrics. watching you as you listened to the last verse, I felt like I wanted to give you a hug. From my own experience, sadly I know the pain of how he describes the loss of his parents. losing my own father broke my mother's heart, and in turn when she passed away, it broke mine. This song makes me cry everytime I listen to it, but the pain is exquisite and reminds me how much I loved my parents, and how they could never be replaced.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (Real name Raymond Edward O'Sullivan) in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.

I’m really having a hard time commenting on this song. 72 and 73 were not good years for me or for a lot of people. The riots and the war and all the social and cultural upheavals that was all background noise to me as a scared and lonely kid. There were quite a few suicide songs on the radio and I hated them all because they cut way too close to home. I found a Gf the next year and she was sadder than I was. I basically lived in her room for the next five years , I was probably way to young to be in a deep love relationship and too young for pot and LSD but we were happy and fulfilled, life became full of purpose. No matter how dark it gets, miracles do happen if you believe that they can. I don’t know why I’m off on this tangent. It’s this song grrr. Great reaction Daniel.

He already did I am a rock. Seasons in the Sun is a reworking of a French song called “Le Moribund”
I was 13? when this came out and I had lost my mother just a few years before. Alone again hit home for me. Not so much first tho verses but the last one was tough. My father was left with three kids and starting over. Years later my father -in-law passed away and this song reminded me of my mother-in-law having to start over at almost the same age. Just a beautiful song while yet being depressing at the same time. What a great song writer Gilbert is.
The words "what do WE do, what do WE do". The Artist [O'Sullivan] is telling the story "as" the groom & in the song is INCLUDING himself [The alter-left groom] with " more hearts broken in the world, that can't be mended, left unattended"....So what do WE do, What do WE do? is speaking about "what do WE "the broken hearted never mended" do? NOT, what can ANYONE do to help these poor people.

This is where the listener who loves this song, begins to relate "personally" to the "Aloneness he feels - NATURALLY. The listener is drawn into being ONE of these broken hearted. This is where at 10 years old, growing up in the Beautiful landscape of The South, yet, wishing many days that I had never been born-- the rejection was so intense, I (as many other's) became part of the song ourselves just before the Orchestral Break in the song's progression., that follows. Those Instuments always brings the torrent of tears, that "naturally" follow once one identifies with those the artist (as the suicidal-groom) is speaking of!
It is SAD and HOPELESS from "beginning" to end! The only silver lining is he DID NOT commit suicide (it would appear as the song ends before that "little while from now" has passed. We do not know if The poor guy fulfilled that "promise to himself" or not. Despite his intense pain. And his aloneness still unresolved at the end! This was soooooooooooooooooooooooo"me"😭at 10 years ,abandoned by both mom and dad at birth and rejected by near ALL of my siblings and family. I spent ALOT of time ALONE as did other kids my age with similar problems of acceptance.

Hello Daniel...I have to say that I enjoy your "dissections" of all these old songs .When this one came out, I was 22 years old and going through a very difficult period. I would play this over and over, not that it was good for me to do so. I am now 71 and terminally ill. When something like this happens you realize how trivial some of your problems were. Do not get me wrong, many people had severe trauma in their lives. I am just saying that when you are planning and waiting for your own demise....it puts things in perspective.
