I'm kinda in the same boat. Firewarriors, Devilfish, and Pathfinders seems like a good pick after being finished with the old Combat Patrol, the only bad thing seems like the incompatible Commander.
Looking at the price of Crisis Battlesuits today I'm so glad I bought most of my Crisis Suits back during the beginning of 8th edition when Crisis Battlesuits sucked and everyone was selling them cheap on eBay.
pretty normal these days for combat patrol to have that. Its annoying if you use a combat patrol to start a 40k army but it is fine in patrol itself to have a sort of "hero" leader character@@Ropsuguy
@Ropsuguy yea but unlike the other combat patrol, the Commander has better guns and can have either fall back and shoot or ignore hit modifieres so it not so screwed over like other characters
Getting 2-3 of these is a solid core for a Tau army . I'd argue its one of the better starter boxes GW have done in years for those just getting into the game. A good HQ (no more excess Ethereals that no-one needs) plus a nice amount of core troops and a transport vehicle. Been over a decade since I bought a Sky ray box, but if the spare hammerhead sprue still comes in that kit, you only need to buy one of those and you'd have enough bits to turn any spare Devilfish transports into a hammerhead as well. I liked the stealtsuits and ghostkeel, but the box wasn't as widely useful as this one.
Extra benefit is if you pickup a hammerhead, it also has a skyray turret as well. So now you have the ability to run either 1 transport and a tank or 2 tanks
The Warlord can't lead anything in the box again, but I can live with this. You got the base battleline, a transport, a skirmish unit and a leader with some size behind them so if you are just starting out it doesn't feel completely useless. Compared to DA atleast
I'm very slowly getting into 40K via the Tau, and I bought the start collecting box set for Tau back around the time the 9th edition codex dropped. I picked up the current combat patrol maybe a month or two ago, and now this one would go very nicely with my current set of models.
the interesting thing is just how complete of an infantry army you get if you pick up one of the old box, 1 of the new, and a box of Crisis Suits for the Commander to lead
Very good to know, I'll buy my second combat patrol now. Though it would have been nice to have known about this a month ago, as I bought almost all these pieces as separate parts, but oh well that's how it goes.
If you get this box, the old box, 1 Broadside, hammerhead, or skyray, and a crisis squad for the commander, you have a decent force to field a 1000pt list. Almost no units between these 2 boxes would be a waste if you're getting started
@@murphy7801 idk. Watching Tau Nick on PlayOn dropping bomb of breachers out of devil fish and obliterating somethings always looks fun. Pathfinders with Rails also can prove to be quite potent.
+murphy7801 What do you mean? That is the core of you typical Tau army. Unless you do something really specialized like kroot-heavy or battlesuit-heavy, your army will have those things.
That's actually a pretty decent combat patrol. I was concerned it would drop hard in quality, but this is a perfectly acceptable starting off point or Infantry booster box in my mind.
I’ve been putting together a bunch of crisis suits, commander farsight, a broadside and a casual darkstrider so this new box is literally full of things I was planning to get in the future anyway, and no wasted ethereals that I won’t be able to use with farsight - I’m pretty happy
Good selection but feels a little disjointed, Either the crisis commander should have been a cadre/ethereal + another small unit like a piranha or broadside or the pathfinders should have been Crisis suits but that'd probably be considered too valuable for old gee dubs.
@SmashingSnow would be a nice addition but if you look at the discount on the actual units for the chapter specific space marines I'd rather get a better discount on units than have upgrade sprues eat up some of the value.
@@Moonlighter_TV Would you change the units in the box? I know some people don't like the commander being able to lead anything similar to the Gravis Captain in the dark angels box.
@@SmashingSnow can't comment because I'm not educated in Tau but yeah if that's the case and the leader can't actually run those units then I hate it. Combat Patrol should have value as an entry point in the game and having leaders that just don't play well with your box is a business tactic to get big 40k players to want to buy a leader that CAN go in their units or buy a unit that their leader CAN join. It's about driving sales decisions and not at all about making a fun force out of the box for people to actually play and enjoy Combat Patrol.
@@Moonlighter_TV That is unfortunately the case as the commander can only join the Crisis suit team. I know I'll be buying one box at some point since I want to build up a 2k Tau army after I collect some Dark Angels.
Looks like a fine box. I started T'au with 2 of the current combat patrol and shadowsun, but I wanted to focus in on stealth units. This box looks like a solid general purpose box. Any detachment in the new codex can use any of the units. A devilfish full of breachers, and a commander are 2 things no Tau player should miss out on. The only iffy piece here is the pathfinders, but I personally like them.
I'll be honest. I was expecting the new T'au combat patrol to just be all Kroot or something. This actually looks to be on-par with the Ghostkeel one, so unlike some of the new combat patrols it's not a complete wash.
Tbh a mech commander was basically guaranteed, unless they wanted to put in crises suits there was nothing that could be done and God forbid they become slightly affordable
Perfect timing. I just got the old Combat Patrol and I’m painting it right now. I’m getting this new one and a unit of Crisis Suits and broad side. Not a bad start for a third army.
This really feels like what a Tau combat patrol ought to be. Transport, which can have one of two infantry sqauds, and a crisis suit capstone. I like it
I'll be turning that devilfish into a skyray with the left over parts from my hammerhead i built. Since i already have a devilfish. Honestly a hack right there if you don't care for a transport. If you bought a hammerhead/Skyray kit just use the left overs cause it works.
Honestly a good Combat Patrol/500 Points list should be an HQ or two, Basic Troops Squad, Elite Troops Squad, and a Transport for either. Nice simple gameplay
I think it looks really good! The commander alone is a bit weird, as is the inclusion of the kill team, but overall a good set. It could benefit from a squad of crisis suits, maybe replacing the devilish or pathfinders, but it seems like a solid box.
This box perfectly fills out my T'au collection: I had 6 crisis suits being led by coldstar commander, now I'll need a second commander with the codex. I have 1 devilfish and 1 breacher squad, would love to get a second breacherfish combo. I love pathfinders even though they aren't the greatest unit in the world, being able to spot for 2 units and being very mobile early is fun and their heavy weapons aren't too shabby.
I mean... I personally like the Ghostkeel and stealth suit box more... But that said, these two go so well together to start building up that army, that I really cannot complain that much.
This is an awesome box for me. Aside from the Fire Warriors it has all the models I wanted to buy anyways. I right now have the old Combat Patrol an the Start Collecting. So a Commander for my Crisis and a Devilfish for my Fire Warriors (the the new ones) as well as Pathfinders is just perfect. Now the only thing missing is some heavy anti tank, either Broadside or Hammerhead.
Considering every single combat patrol 'cept for maybe nids has gotten a Meh at best from general audiences, a glare of disgust by the same people, but an ABSOLUTE rage boner from everyone who actually collects the army (ex. Been meaning to buy the original CP for quite a while now. This has pushed me to do it. Looks like they dovetail well together too, I largely play small games at home, so the combination is pretty perfect for me, just add some crisis suits.
I can see grabbing a couple of these to get started in tau. Fish of fury breachers are great in Kauyon and I’m sure they’ll be just as good in mont’ka. Can’t see anyone wanting more than a couple copies of the pathfinders though
Looks like a reasonable box to get you going, honestly. Might've been nice to have a crisis team for the commander to lead, but I guess I can understand not putting a unit like that in a combat patrol.
with the new way they're being designed. either the crisis teams would have been insanely powerful or wimpy as hell depending on matchup. from list balancing perspective it makes sense. additionally it makes sense due to how expensive crisis are
Seeing this Combat Patrol is going to be Tau Only, do you think there would be a Kroot Combat Patrol ? Seeing the Combat Patrols are infantry heavy, it would make sense to have one for Kroots too. Could for example be, unit of Carnivores with a Shaper, and maybe 2 units of Kroot Hounds lead by the Lone Spear ? Either way, seeing both the patrolls next to each other, they form a solid start to a T'au army for anyone who wants to start collecting them, maybe add the Kroot box to it and you have 1k army ready to go.
Im just getting into 40k and had planned on getting the previous Tau combat patrol, is it going to be harder to get the old one once this new one is out, because I like the bigger units in this one more, but may want to get the old one later. Just looking for advice for a noobie.
GW will stop packaging the old combat patrol boxes, so yes it will be harder to find and thus more expensive, although presumably still less expensive than buying the individual sets together.
I still reckon the best T'au Box was the Boarding Patrol (Which I got): Farsight, Trio of Crisis suits, Breacher team (10), a few drones. This one does feel decent, but it depends on your detachment I suppose.
sure, this one combos really well with the current ghostkeel one, but once those dry up it feels very bad for both this one having a charactor with nothing to attach to in the box, and .. its just feels so much smaller than the ghost keel one.
Honestly the ones that stand out as odd to me are the commander who doesn’t have a good lead option, and the pathfinder’s who are very usable but removing them wouldn’t be the worst case. The best way to make this more coherent is to either swap pathfinders for crisis suits or just make a Kroot box
I'll probably pick this up honestly. Tau are one of those armys I collect very slowly in the background, picking up discount boxes here and there rather than actively filling out the ranks I need. and I could absolutely use some Tanks and commanders. Im cooling with adding one more squad of pathfinders and Fire warriors, but I don't think id grab a second honestly. the 30% is pretty disappointing too. This feels about like what we got for the start collecting boxes in 8th/ early 9th, but for like 50 dollars more.
Can’t wait to see the GSC one being just the rock grinder, 10 neophytes, and a magos, but still 140$ because that’s what it’s looking like we’re going to get
I know, no matter what they do it won’t be as good as the current combat patrol. That’s why I bought 3 of the GSC CP as i slowly build my tau and GSC. I wish I would’ve bought one more Tau CP but the GSC is just the best value.
I bought some crisis suits recently and no commander, so this looks pretty useful for me. The question is, should i buy a 2nd one of the existing CP? Are 2 Ghostkeels worth running?
The Pathfinders not being the KT version feels a rather cheap move, by "giving away" that little extra sprue they could encourage people to get into KT too but no, god forbid they are THAT "generous"...
As an introduction box it's maybe more... usefull? Better to have a commander that ethereal/fireblade, a transport is always good, maybe I would not have put two infantry units; for starting army is good but it would have been better a crisis unit, like you said. Although I think devilfish+breachers are a great combination, if the pathfinders bring the Kill Team upgrade sprue I prefer them to the breachers, is a good support/spotter unit and give the option of trying a different game.
This is what I've been holding out for, I already have pathfinder and I'm just painting some stealth battlesuits so I have a third of the combat patrol already, If I buy the new combat patrol it still may work out cheaper, I have to check on my 1000 point list to see any changes
BreacherFish and Railfinders are perfectly good for a Combat Patrol. However, if they didn't want to give a full Crisis team, they should've kept the Ghostkeel or swapped the robot for a couple Broadsides.
i like both! but i think that the combat patrols with no big models play better if u are focused on playing combat patrol, but have less value when just collecting for ur 2000point army
Great time to be starting tau. Found a start collecting in an old couple store, got 2 different combat patrols I can add and then on top of all that the people knee jerk reaction selling their crisis suits at a steep discount AND whole new root army for sale tomorrow? I’m living the dream.
The best time to start tau was when the titular stat collecting box was around. Just because James is shoving overpriced boxes/kits in your face doesn't make it a good deal.
@@dratesdragetes777 Yeah combat patrol was better w.e but since the Crisis Suit changes people have been going full doom and gloom while selling entire Crisis suit collections, now's a great time to take advantage and start Tau.
I think depending on how you like the tau will make the decision on which combat patrol you like the old or new I personally like the old one because i prefer battlesuits over high infantry and the start collecting box was great
they should have had a broadside mech instead of commander mech and added in a cadre fireblade to be HQ for the firewarriors. or swap the commander mech with... crisis suits, or a hammerhead
As a new player myself this is ideal and good value imo, I do prefer the look of the current box though. Will probably get both and have a decent army to get started ….. then slowly realise how much stuff needs building and painting lol 😂
Would have been nice if one of the infantry squads were replaced with a crisis squad, but definitely seems better than I expected. Solo commander seems more reasonable than the other "leader with no squad" we've seen, and the transport is definitely a nice surprise. Still a bummer to see GW shaving value off at all though. Even straight-up adding a crisis squad wouldn't match some of the best options for points per dollar.
The pathfinders would be nice if they had a second unit to guide. They can guide the fire warrior unit and then what to pick for the 2nd. The commander that doesnt need it or the devilfish ? I quite like the box in itself, but this weird misscount feels off to me
If combat patrol could get a consistent identity that would be great, this one doesn’t seem all that bad though, since it seems like it gives you a decent selection of infantry with a transport, so if you want to expand into other parts of the army you’re fairly free to. At the same time it’s kinda dissapointing that the transport is the “big unit” I’d love at least something else to give it more identity than “infantry with a transport”
I love it. A Commander can either drop alone(small footprint) or with a squad of Crisis. Fire Warriors are fairly flexible(Strike or Breachers) as either supportive or offensive units. Pathfinders give you a lot of options for board control and a good mix of weaponry and support abilities. Basically it works in isolation as a combat patrol or as an addition to a larger force.
I think the old box got better with the new rules coming in so of course it is going away. That said this one could be worse it is all useable, I don't understand why they keep making boxes with Heroes that don't work with any of the units in the 10th patrols.

Solo Commander is actually a very meta choice right now
Honestly the ones that stand out as odd to me are the commander who doesn’t have a good lead option, and the pathfinder’s who are very usable but removing them wouldn’t be the worst case.
The best way to make this more coherent is to either swap pathfinders for crisis suits or just make a Kroot box
I think what'll be the deciding factor for me is if the Pathfinders come with the Kill Team upgrade sprue
If they had swapped the pathfinders for a unit of 3 crisis suits, it would have been near perfect, IMO.
I’ll prolly pick this one up, have a commander but otherwise need more infantry and a devilfish to fill out my army
Probably prefer this to the weirdly stealth slant the original had but i think they compliment each other well
As an introduction box it's maybe more...
Has the main 40k pathfinder datasheet been leaked yet? If they can also divide into two small units in normal 40k that would actually be quite a buff
I’m curious if this would be worth buying 2 of
Feels a lot like the old Tau Collecting box if you subbed out the pathfinders for kroot.
I'm surprised they are still selling drones. Are drones separate components of squads again?
Dang, might have to take you up on that discount 😅 kinda wanted the old one
As a new player myself this is ideal and good value imo, I do prefer the look of the current box though. Will probably get both and have a decent army to get started ….. then slowly realise how much stuff needs building and painting lol 😂
I like the look of this set!
I might have to pick that up
Would have been nice if one of the infantry squads were replaced with a crisis squad, but definitely seems better than I expected. Solo commander seems more reasonable than the other "leader with no squad" we've seen, and the transport is definitely a nice surprise.
Still a bummer to see GW shaving value off at all though. Even straight-up adding a crisis squad wouldn't match some of the best options for points per dollar.
I think you buy two of each, and then have an excellent start to the army.
The pathfinders would be nice if they had a second unit to guide.
They can guide the fire warrior unit and then what to pick for the 2nd. The commander that doesnt need it or the devilfish ?
I quite like the box in itself, but this weird misscount feels off to me
I like this box, i got the old start collecting and a hammerhead, so this will be a nice addition to my small collection.
If combat patrol could get a consistent identity that would be great, this one doesn’t seem all that bad though, since it seems like it gives you a decent selection of infantry with a transport, so if you want to expand into other parts of the army you’re fairly free to. At the same time it’s kinda dissapointing that the transport is the “big unit” I’d love at least something else to give it more identity than “infantry with a transport”
i like the current one more, but this seems like a decent buy for those that already have the current one other than having lots of troops.
I nearly bought the Combat Patrol box last month only because of the Ghostkeel
At least they get a vehicle, I will say that it's marginally better than the other combat patrols.
So new to Tau (and 40k)...is this "Fish Of Fury" all in one box?
I think the old box got better with the new rules coming in so of course it is going away. That said this one could be worse it is all useable, I don't understand why they keep making boxes with Heroes that don't work with any of the units in the 10th patrols.
Thought they were going the no vehicle route but oh well
Dam, Tau player actually got a treat with this one.
Better than others.. say dark angels maybe?...
