Funny thing about chaos spawn proxy. Recently bought a board game, can't recall the name but it's western themed where you and other players delve into a mine and there are eldritch horrors and monsters you fight along the way. In the box are these models that are eldritch abominations that are perfect for Chaos Spawn Proxy as long as you can give them 50mm bases instead of 35. Which I'm definitely going to paint as emperors children and it was perfect timing because I just needed to find a way to dump 75pts into my list. The board game was like 110$ or something? But it has six of those abominations in it so it's technically a huge deal.
Ahhh yes, isn't it great when a company overcharges so much that buying board games with tons of stuff in them for a single part of them is still a better deal then buying that one GW product
I’m actually tempted to start a small custodies force. Sorta wish I’d bought the xmas box. I think if the boarding patrol had Wardens and was £10 more expensive, it’d be perfect
I know that this is very much "broad advice" episode, but man, I unironically love every model in the Necron Combat Patrol. Tomb Blades are my new find in my Necron collection that I like, and unless I am forced not to, I will always take at least 10 Tesla Immortals in any list. I think that getting two of the Combat Patrols with Mephrit is actually a pretty insane list, and maybe setting up 10-20 immortals and making Deathmarks once you get tired of Immortals is the way to go. Kitbashing a couple Overlords is what I ended up doing, making both a Scythe+Orb and Staff of Light+Orb variant that I can throw on my CCB. Only issue is that rules wise, both of the Scythe versions are not good, but with 10th on the way, and the Doom Scythe being pretty good in a Mephrit list, I think that can be overlooked for now. Again, if you are a Canoptek/Destroyer enjoyer, the Patrol is just an insta pass, but I think that saying it's a bad box isn't entirely true.
So I bought the Eldar boarding patrol, (for kill team mostly) you can take corsairs in Craftworlds armies and they aren't terrible but they don't fill obligatory slots in armies unless the army is all corsairs.
For space marines what i did is back in the day bought the Recruit Edition and now i picked up the Elite Edition before the new edition hits. From what we saw is very unlikely we will get many duplicates beetween the old boxes and the new ones vs tyranids so taking advantage of those huge discounts the edition boxes offer was a no brainer for me.
As someone who by now owns 6 Necron combat patrols (I love the models and they're very much playable in opr) I find it very entertaining every time you start talking about how much you hate this box. :D
I have no issue with the box but dang putting together to tomb blades the first time was so fiddly, trying to fit the heads between the body and the orb is so frustrating.
The bikes for Votann are almost an auto take, so it makes sense to me to grab one cp, with the bp, then buy two land fortresses and then more bikes and you’re good.
Started to get into Sisters of Battle and managed to find a Boarding Patrol at a decent discount. Sad to see that the Boarding Patrols were limited runs since it looks like the Boarding Patrols were better than the combat patrols in most of the cases.
For me, personally, Tzaangors are pretty much the coolest thousand sons units out there. Shame they suck and get forced down your throat so much. But they do look very cool
For new players thinking about playing Tyranids, please hold off until 10th edition releases. If you want an example, I later picked up (on the 2nd run) a box of Indomitous Necrons, i.e. 20 Necron Warriors, the Dynasty Quadrilogy (Skorpekh Lord, Canoptek Reanimator, Royal Warden and Overlord) not to mention 6 scarab swarms (comes with Warriors kits), Plasmancer with 2 plasmacytes, and 3 Necron Destroyers. All of these monsters are at the very least, decent to be used competitively, they were the brand new sculpts (Necrons hadn't had many new models for years) and when I tried to sell the Necron half, nobody would take it because everybody got their hands on it. I borderline was trying to sell/trade them at my FLGS to other people for $90 and the Necron players said "no thanks". You can still sometimes see people trying to sell what is essentially nearly 1000 points of Necrons for $90. The same thing occurred in 8th edition with the Dark Imperium box set, however unlike with Indomitous, the box was not a limited run and ran for years. Deathguard was so overinflated that even after 9th edition was around the corner, you could find 1,200 point Death Guard armies on sale on ebay for about $150, or the Dark Imperium half for $60-80 USD (free shipping). The upcoming box is going to replace decades old sculpts bringing new life into the hobby, new models, and you will likely receive what should be 800 points or more of Tyranids for even $100 online, making it drastically cheaper and just better value in everyway. If somebody tries to sell it to you for $150, it'll probably be including the new (although free online) 10th edition rulebook that is bound to be included.
when it comes to the tau, I'd recommend one of each box to someone starting. To someone who wants to get into tau and is ok with kitbashing, just buy two to three of the boarding patrol-> build one farsight proper, cut the sword off the second and build it as a generic commander, the third is your choice, either trade it for an etherial or sell it or kitbash it into some other suit. Crisis are situational but they are incredibly versitile, and usually earn their points back. The ghostkeel will struggle to do so and the stealth suits might, if you play on tables with excessive cover and always shoot at chaff.
As an AOS Tzeentch player, i have 60 Tzaangor. they throw em in everything, but i love the models. I have been trying to make them work so much, but in Tzeentch they're just not good. In the beasts of chaos last book they were great (you ran 30 blocks of them). but it still kinda blows that in Tzeentch they have never been great, but theyre much better in the new book than the old, but just dont work that well with the army.
As someone who bought the Custodes Christmas set, and also wanted to get into Grey Knights I just bought one of each of those boxes per the recommendation here. Now my goal is to get them painted up so that I have a 1000 point army to loan a friend I want to try to get into the game when tenth drops, and we can learn both together. Hopefully he will enjoy it enough to branch into one on his own.
was listening back to this, and its wild how much they didn't really get the Eldar Boarding Patrol. So yeah, as a method to build up a craftworld army, you wouldnt wanna buy multiples and being corsair themed is very slanted. However, in Arks of Omen, because it got rid of the compulsory troops tax, people could run Corsairs as their cheap obsec with good weapons, and Boarding actions was one of the few places you could have a full corsair list because of only needing 500 points. They also included banshees, which right now every Craftworld list is running at least 1 squad of. So the Boarding patrol is actually really nice for someone who didn't get the kill team, and canget two copies of it now in addition to a unit they already would need anyways, and then Jain Zarr on top of that. I am way on a budget so I had to skip it, but that was the most attractive box that they came out in my eyes. So yeah, still good video, its just funny how that one bit feels so off compared to everything else.
Love stuff like this. Helps me out so much. Finally getting in / back into the game. Looking at my old stuff, figuring out what I have and what I need yet. Or to help start fresh if I chose to say F it I'm starting over.
I understand, for points value, the Chaos Spawn might not be great for the dollar value. But that kit is a kitbashers dream, especially if your into to weird chaos mutant stuff.
I like taking 3 Eldar Combat Patrols and start converting 1/2 the Guardians to Dire Avengers, Convert a Unit of Shining Spears and an Autarch on Jetbike... Its a pretty Nasty list that really only needs a couple small Aspect squads and Falcons to finish rounding out, or Wraithguard if you want to be a little slower but punchier.
Didn't see this video when I was purchasing Grey Knights, but I came to the same conclusion. For my 2k list I bought two combat patrols, 1 boarding patrol, Voldus, and 1 set of terminators. It's such an easy to collect range.
Looking back on this video just a few months later as a new tau player and remembering when the tau boarding patrol sold out in less than 5 minutes and is now nearly 300 bucks everywhere. It was a sizable oof when all I had was a pathfinder team and some stealth suits.
This is not a recent issue. 40k is infamous for being scalper's feeding ground. The most obvious example is the recent Leviathan box that was sold out in literal seconds. People showed they click buy as soon as it's available, placed in their cart and when checked out it's sold out. Then later listed on Amazon or Ebay for ludicrous prices. What's sad is GW doesn't care. Because it doesn't affect their profits; items were flying off the shelves so why do I, a business, have to care if I'm selling stuff too fast? Honestly I envy those that has a Games Workshop retail nearby, because I don't have that luxury.
One thing i hate about 40k is that for the past few years, I cant find %^& anything. So many things are sold out, then poof back up for a few days in stores or online, and then poof, gone again. It started with Covid but never ended, it's frustrating to go to buy something but I cant find it unless I turn to Ebay and sadly, it's marked up on eBay. This is frustrating. I do like some of the boxes they are making but, I cant find many of the ones I want.
Incase anyone from the future is wondering about the World Eater combat patrol. I recommend it as a World Eater. You get lots of berserkers which allow you have lots of small squads or massive squads. A unit if jakhals which are cheap stuff to body block with or hold a home objective. The leader can be built as lord invocatus who's very powerful or a lord on juggernaut. Should you get 2? If you like hordes then you could but you'll have no elite options and personally I think two hqs on juggernauts could be too much even if one is the lord invocatus
Pro tip, If you play CSM in 9th and want a good value box to add to your army. Its The thousand sons boarding patrol. Flamer rubrics are arguably better in standard CSM then in their own legion.
I bought CSM Boarding Patrol. I don't play Warhammer I just paint them. Abaddon looks great, and plus it's got a lot of plastics for a very reasonable price. I do wish I got into the hobby when their Start Collecting box was still around.
As a Adepta Sororitas player I think the Combat patrol is a better value than the Boarding. I look at the Boarding Patrol and I just want to pass. That Rhino and Seraphims are really important to the army list plus that single Penitent Engine/Mortifier means if you get the box with two to get a full squad of instead of buying two boxes and having to ditch one because you can’t have a squad of 4. Also that Chaos Boarding Patrol is an amazing value but you really only want to play as the Black Legion.
As a grey knights player i may reccomend another boarding patrol as crow if you can find a appropriate sized shield makes a wonderful kit bashed draigo or any other character you want a demon killi sword. And hate resin.
There is another way to look at this, maybe you can do an episode about it: Are these boxes good to buy an allied detachment - like Eldar & Dark Eldar for each other, Imperial Guard for Space Marines, Sisters and whatever. There are too many possibilities in reality but maybe one of these boxes has some severe advantage and a severe disadvantage that might be cancelled or turned into an advantage by combining different factions...?
I think the CSM Combat Patrol is OK if you use the Havocs to Kitbash Heavy Weapons, but as 10th basically says, "You have to run it as is" then it's sort of up to playtesting now with how the Units now work. I agree that to get a great CSM starter list, One Combat Patrol + Boarding Patrol has you sorted.
I got my Sisters Combat Patrol for 97.89 from my LGS. All because it sat there for almost a year and a half. I feel like I'm at a pretty good start for collecting them.
As someone who's starting by collecting Sisters of Battle... Ooooff. On one hand, the boarding patrol seems solid. 3 full squads of good units. On the other hand, the combat patrol offers a lot of variety, which is very exciting if you want to practice painting, but might not be as useful, since squads come in strange numbers (1 penitent? 2 flagellants? 4 repentias? ) Plus, with the changes to army builds coming with 10th edition I can't predict how useful everything will be anyway.
Guard doesn't have a boarding patrol but we still have the combat patrol. For those wondering, it's a bit meh. The two troops and command squad are a fantastic solid base that you will need for every guard army, the sentinel is nice to have if you like the model, but you need a squad of three to turn them into a proper menace on the battlefield. The field ordonnance battery is downright bad as an indirect fire option for the guard. The mortars from the heavy weapons teams are a MUCH better option, the basilisk is also better and the manticore is kind of mediocre currently but at least it looks badass. If you add up the prices, just the two troops and command squad add up to the same amount as the combat patrol, so you get a sentinel for free and 2 big cannons that will sit unpainted on your desk for 3 years till GW makes them good. Not great, not terrible, I'll rate it 3.6.
I think I am going to buy the Thousand Sons boarding patrol becuase I live on an island, and shipping costs are crazy here. I'd rather buy 1 box then 3, even if the 3 are a slightly less price.
Ok..just gotta say about DG combat patrol. When it came out, there was a perfectly legal army in that box....you just had an extra 10 poxwalkers to get started collecting for larger games. Typhus, BP, 7PMs, and 20PWs cost about 492pts before wargear (back then it wasn't free). It a weird way the DG CP box was actually one of the "best"...hear me out. Like I said there was at the time of release about 550 pts in that box (over 600 if you built the extra 3 marines from the PW sprue)...compare that to the Astra Militarum box that launched with a little under 400pts. Honestly, my biggest issue with the DG box is it was "oops all Poxwalkers"...and my main gripe with that is more that Poxwalkers are highly monopose so I lacked motivation to paint more than 10 (had to figure out different paint styles to finish them). I will say this though...my sense of "value" is very different from most, so grain of salt. I mean you guys were saying how Grey Knights CP box was great and all I could see was 12 models for $160 (once again in an odd way I say even DG box beats them, at least I got 42 models from that box...even if 30 were monopose zombies).
So, I'm standing there preparing smoked corn on the cob, and hearing "if you like Khorne" about 8 times in a row made me lose it. I'm gonna play that over when my wife takes a bite.
Tau player here. Tau boaridng patrol is better than combat patrol and buying 2 of him is not a terrible idea because you get to kitbash thr wings from a second commander and that leaves you tons of options for commanders off those boxes. That said the combat patrol isnt a bad deal. You want ethereals if you dont run FSE, cadre isnt bad as a tech choice for holding support relics and can be pretty good with enough fire warriors. Stealth suits are great. Those pieces alone mean you basically get a free ghostkeel which, while not insane, is a great hobby model and also fun in casual games
Boarding Patrols are temporary. Grabbing one of those now and a Combat Patrol later is the better idea for value. As for Impulsors, Black Templars love them. They get Multi Meltas on their Impulsors so they don't mind spamming them. Especially since they can stick Sword Brethren in them. For Corsair patrol, they do in fact work with Craftworld Eldar in Boarding Patrol. And honestly most Eldar players use most Eldar factions and don't mind getting all the models for cheap so it's a good value since the models are new and not resin. And you forgot to mention why Flash Gitz were great. They're dressed like Pirates, in a Boarding Actions game format. Perfect.
It should be noted that will simple/straightforward, the world eaters combat patrol has one of the highest potential points counts at over 750+ points in the box
I've got two games stores, one is a dedicated wargaming store that's incredibly neche and out of the way but great prices and one right in the middle of the downtown shopping area that upcharges $10-$15 basically for location, new releases and reputation. I mostly shop at the little store but I had to go to the big one to get my leviathan box.
When getting into orks, I got the Combat Patrol, then later someone in my playgroup sold me his old start collecting box, then later I preordered the Boarding Patrol. In theory, that'd have been a great start. Except I also bought like 1500 points worth of smaller boxes in between those three purchases. My wallet hates me.
Hey man kroot are cool, as a kid my dad took me to game store and I saw the kroot and fell in love with them. It’s how I started collecting tau. Even if you don’t like the old Kroot you gotta give the new kill team box credit those new models make me hard
Whats funny is i got the opposite, someone at my lgs bought the leviathan set for the Tyrinids and i bought the space marines off him for 100$. It was nice for me starting out in the hobby just a few months ago.
I think my opinions on Combat Patrols might be shifting when we actually get to see what 10th has in store for the format. I love "precons" in Magic for casual games, so I'm optimistic about being able to play smaller games of 40k with other new people - maybe as a teaching tool too. Plus it gave me a painting goal to finish my Necron patrol.
I would argue the votann combat patrol is actually better than you've rated it since most good votann lists have 9 (minimum) hernkyn, it's not bad. Also basically every Votann list will have a kahl/Uthar who is built out the same kit
Real talk, Eldar boarding patrol slaps hard. With the corsairs I kitbashed 5 rangers and some warlocks already and i still have a lot of the kit left. Much cheaper then buying those kits.
Just make a t-shirt with "Rhinos are free" already

The World Eater combat patrol is actually good when you realize that Berzerkers as a unit fulfill multiple roles.
It’s a great starting point
Shame it's been 12 weeks and it still hasn't come out for preorder
@@jamesdo3086 fax.
I have been waiting to buy the combat patrol for 4 months to start the army, but I guess GW doesn't want money.
I would love to see this done again once 10E drops and see how much changes.
Quick note for the two Tau boxes :
Convert the Ethereal into a Cadre Fireblade with the fire warrior spare parts
More great editing. Well done editor.
Dang, the algorithm is loving you guys. Just watched a 6 day old Eons of Battle vids and it auto played in to a 1 year old podcast of yours.
I need "Rhinos are free" on a t-shirt
I’m just glad I managed to pick up an old CSM start collecting from my local store before they replaced it.
Start collecting boxes that can't even be played legally really make me question if I'm getting into the right hobby here.
The old Start Collecting box for the T'au was crazy good for getting the core of the army.
This is the most valuable video to anyone like me who are just getting into warhammer
You two are great. Keep it up. I love Thousand Sons and getting into Adeptus Custodes, I think I will get the combat patrol.
The Chaos Spawn are totally legal in Boarding Patrol. You can include one Chaos Spawn Unit and the unit is 1-5 Spawn
As someone who bought the drukhari combat patrol and boarding box last week. Big agree lol
was listening back to this, and its wild how much they didn't really get the Eldar Boarding Patrol.
Boarding patrols don’t seem to be available anymore, unfortunately
Yay we got the burning 'positive' from Eric finally!
My brain can only recognize a box as worth it if the box comes with a vehicle
It's such an easy to collect range.
love the channel dudes! Would love to see videos like this but you guys making your own combat patrols/boarding patrols for both 40k and horus heresy
First video I've watched from you two. Both of you were amazing and keep up the content!
I honestly would collect T’au for Kroot and Battle Suits and Farsight. I just want them to have more Xenos in their army
I bought CSM Boarding Patrol. I don't play Warhammer I just paint them. Abaddon looks great, and plus it's got a lot of plastics for a very reasonable price. I do wish I got into the hobby when their Start Collecting box was still around.
Love this episode. Appreciate the talk on value and cut through the marketing hype.
As a Tyranid player, with the release of 10th edition, my condolences are out for all Eldar players.
might pick up the custodes boarding, like me some golden boys but only when im done building and paint more of my main stuff
4 repentias? )
Plus, with the changes to army builds coming with 10th edition I can't predict how useful everything will be anyway.
Good news! There are 3 arco flaggellants in the box :P
I'm halfway through The Infinite and the Divine at the moment - very much looking forward to the book club
Obviously the second stealth ork should be covered in bits to look like a terrain pics to show he’s just that good at hiding.
Zooming in on the avatars for funny moments is a nice touch.
I really want to get into Blood Angels so I'll probably wait for the box they release with Dante. The Orks and Drukhari boxes are very tempting too.
I started collecting Sisters not realising how expensive they are.
I'm tempted to buy a more Elite army too, so I can get to table quicker.
Don't listen to all this heresy. Stay strong and loyal to the sisters.
Combat patrol, combat patrol, boarding patrol, Christmas box, Celestine and ready to go
Just a headsup about votann combat patrol: due to current point values you can get almost 1000 points from 1CP so it's a solid starting point
i think the ork boarding patrol is the coolest. you get snakebites, freebootas, and blood axes.
Old AdMech Combat Patrol looking a lot better in hindsight.
As an admech player, the best advice i can give is, spend 300 dollars on a resin printer and make an army that way. Plenty of files exist
Not gonna lie I went straight for that Agents Of The Imperium box, £68 in the UK and that Starstriders kit alone goes for £40 on eBay.
What happens if Tzangoors are totally awesome in 10th edition? Let's be honest - the models are pretty cool
Real talk, Eldar boarding patrol slaps hard. With the corsairs I kitbashed 5 rangers and some warlocks already and i still have a lot of the kit left. Much cheaper then buying those kits.
The combat patrol still gives you another hq in the Cadre Fireblade
