- Whether you choose the Panasonic Lumix GH7 or the S9, the S5iix, the Sony ZVe1, the FX3, the FX30, the Canon R5C, the Blackmagic 6k Pro, I mean, any of these cameras are the best at something, or many things, but there is one thing that will cure you of this madness that is searching for the "perfect camera", and that is actually deciding to do something. To tell a story that moves you, and to do it now. Get a camera, or use the one that you have, and get into a project, and you will be reminded of what got you here in the first place, and suddenly all of this meaningless bullsh*t will fade away and restore your sanity. And most importantly, guide you back to your creativity. Once that happens, you are unstoppable!

Ladies and Gents, this is a long video, but totally worth it, - to drive home the points of this episode, you can reference check what I write below here (its all true).
In the first half of the 1990's, computers were starting to be around "everywhere", and most people had access to them on a public library, at home or whatever not.
But there was a poor single mom, living on government welfare, that wanted to tell a story. And she could not afford a computer to tell her story, so she jotted it down on paper, and later, in a second hand shop, she bought an old 1960's German Olympia typewriter with the little money she had. (you know, that kind of mechanical "monster" you find in museums these days).
It took her almost five years to finish that 300 page book she was working on, - and she didn't even had a publisher backing her, - so it took her almost another 2 years of refusal and denial before she found someone that was willing to take a chance, and publish her book.
Finally, on the 26th june, 1997 , Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published. And the rest is history.
Moving forward 25 years to the 2020's - we have AI assisted voice controlled software, we have an almost endless amount of hardware and software to help us tell a story.
Still no new Harry Potter series have been seen, nor a Tolkien Series. - Guess what , the tech is just a tool - you are the storyteller, and your story is all that matters.
So before chasing the next latest and greatest tech xyz, maybe take a look in the mirror and admit, well if J.K Rowling could write Harry Potter on a old, second hand 1960s typewriter, maybe I can tell a story with whatever camera - or maybe, I'm to lazy, and just want to buy new tech so that I can fool myself, - if just for a short moment - , that I am a storyteller, and not a mindless consumer.
The choice is yours. And Yours only.
Man… this is the PERFECT comment for what I am trying to get across. Thanks for this. I know the video is long, I definitely don’t know how to tell a short story. :-) But I tried really hard to weave a lot of information in to make people realize that they probably already have exactly what they need. And that they should really think about what their intentions really are. It’s funny, somebody left a comment today on another one of my videos saying that they simply love watching camera videos, but they have no interest in actually buying one or using one. And so to that guy, I really understand him watching all these crazy videos, because at least he knows that he’s not gonna be trapped into buying a camera in March, and then in September, and then another one next April, and never feeling happy about anything, and never making anything with it, at least he’s not that person. Anyway, you got my point, and I really appreciate this, thanks so much, and thanks for coming through. And have an awesome day!
It's so funny, our stories aren't that far apart. I've traveled the same road.
I dunno Rock, I''ll toss out that 90% of people don't care about "story" or think about it as way down on the priority list (or maybe even the Arts as a whole). It seems to me that tech specs, being constantly angry that your camera doesn't have "X" (like uncropped 4k 60 or 120 or whatever), color grading, and looking "cinematic" take the spots about stories. I also think (and sometime battle this) that due to the abundance of choice and information it's way too easy to become a perpetual student (all input and little/no output). So much the total opposite of the 60s-90s where there was the lack of choice and information. And buying decisions were mostly made by how much cash you had in your pocket at that moment.
I totally agree with you. And one of the reasons I make videos like this is because I actually think this is a generational thing. All of the plethora of choices, the abundance of these amazing cameras, at the end of the day, they're really all exactly the same, unless you have absolutely no desire to do anything real with them. If you just want to own a camera, or acquire a bunch of them to review them constantly, then okay, that's what you do. But that's not why cameras were made. Just like one of the other comments in this video about typewriters. A typewriter is to create a story. A camera is to create a story. I think the way things are now it is almost paralyzing for people, and they find it very difficult to even get to a point of doing something like making an actual movie because as much as they are experts on how to use their camera, at the end of the day, they really don't know how to use it at all. If you understand what I'm saying. ;)
After having all these fancy Sony camera and lenses, I realized that what I lack is to talk fluently and confidently in front of a damn camera. Any camera will look good if I can talk. This is reality check.
@@trevorwild195 just imagine there’s an actual human being standing right in front of you. That might help. :-) I think it’s harder to just talk into a “camera”. If you imagine somebody who you know, just sitting there listening to you, it might make you feel more comfortable.😉🙏
Definetely YT content creators era is past its peak in terms of hardware reviews. It feels like regular mirrorless camera brands are already superb and there is not much more room for improvement apart from adding real cine cameras features in there. Another side is that as much as the content creators do produce good stuff, it's just all the same full of crazy transitions and sound effects. The market and YT is saturated with almost identical content. It's time for a change..
I think you nailed it. Although all of the content out there is pretty remarkable, it’s all exactly the same. And I agree, I think mirrorless cameras are similar to smartphones. They’re kind of maxed out. But maybe this is a good thing, because maybe this will get people back to actually creating stories, making movies, Making content that is contributing in some kind of way as opposed to just the same old thing all the time over and over again, just reviewing hardware and software. After a while, there’s no place else to go, you’ve hit the ceiling, and it’s time to remember why you use this gear in the first place. Or why you wanted this gear in the first place. I had autoplay on and after your video the next video was someone going on about the Gh7 and all the new features that aren't going to help anyone at all because most cameras the last few years are easily good enough.
I watched High Noon a few days ago. The 1952 version. That movie was shot on a shoestring budget but is now a classic. Now consider that any camera from the last few years is massively superior to anything those guys had to work with. The reason that movie is a classic is because it tells a story and has compelling suspense. There is a lot of clever tricks with cinematography but that just backs the story up. Old movies are a good thing to watch without all the modern tech you see nowadays where there is no compelling story.
Also, it's not just movies that have narrative. I've primarily been doing photography and only dabbled in video which I intend to do more of. My best photos where I have shot people are ones that capture some kind of suggested narrative. The lenses and cameras I used are secondary. Maybe I was lucky to have the right lens at the right time but that's how I learned what effect certain lenses, lighting, fields of view etc create.
There is a youtuber called Theoria Apophasis (real name Ken Wheeler) commonly known as the Angry Photographer. He used to do a lot of videos about lenses. He was right about a lot of them. He calls a lot of these youtubers "measurebaters". All the test charts, looking at corner sharpness etc and no real world usage to actually create art.

Story is key, and yes to we have gear that is so far superior to anything even 10 years ago, and so.... at least in my humble opinion, find something important to you, and watch your need for the next camera slowly disappear as you are too busy creating art.
Good point, stop view those sales men and women, "the greatest" "the best" "you need this" all those get paid instead making projects we like. I buy a samsung and use it last 2 weeks.

Panasonic released the GH6... within a few months they dropped they price by $500. Screw you customers. Now they release the camera the GH6 should have been at the SAME PRICE... and want $200 for GH6 users to get that "feature". Could have been a REALLY good opportunity to win back their GH6 customers with a bad taste in their mouths.
Nah... Lets go full frame with the Nikon Z6III and finally give up on the M4/3. Bye Lumix.
I feel like Panasonic is just always moving, continuing to make new stuff, but the problem is that they are all great. It's always just adding one thing or another to each camera, and people feel like they got ripped off when that happens, but all of these cameras are amazing. I can see why people get upset though, but for me, I'm using the s5 which a lot of people think is garbage, and my latest film, shot completely and solely on that camera, just won at the Manhattan Film Festival, so... they are all capable of doing magical things. You just have to dig in and do the work. Thanks so much for coming through, I appreciate that and don't take it for granted.
You seem to say a lot of good things, but 40 minutes is just to long.
Nobody ever accused me of knowing how to tell a short story. ;) to be honest with you, I'm not trying to craft a TH-cam video, I'm just speaking about things that I want to talk about. You can turn it off, you can come back to it whenever you want, whatever you like, I'm not mad. I know a lot of people like short content, I'm just not that person. Although sometimes I have shorter videos, but sometimes they're definitely long. In any case, I really appreciate the kind words, and the feedback, and especially I don't take for granted that you even took the time to watch and to comment. And so thank you for that, it is much appreciated.
Auto focus kicks my nass. I wish there was a fw to connect bt to camera from zoom f3 because start stop has to be pressed and i forget especially when 40ft away in an event senerio . I pretty much shoot full days or hrs at a time because nothing is scripted or timed and ill sometimes have 8hrs of external and 4hrs in cam🤮😂.a great film was the book of eli and a beautiful mind. 🫣Thanks again
You are right on point! Speaking from personal experience, most of us get stuck thinking more about the gear rather than why we bought it in the first place! We mind-fuck ourselves into a ton of debt we never seem to earn our way out of and before we get all the boxes open, a new model just hit the market! It's our own fault because we always listen to these TH-cam influencers! LOL! Instead, Like you said, we just need to start coming up with story ideas, take whatever gear we do have, and start doing something other than practicing for that day that never seems to come!

do you still use gh5 and what is your fav m43 lens?
i use gx8 love it but looking for one with dual card maybe gh5 cheaper or gh7?

also do you know best AF adapter for EF lenses on m43 ?
I use my GH5 quite often, but my main camera is the S5. I found my GH5 on Ebay for $475, so they are out there for really inexpensive prices. You should be able to find one, no problem. As far as AF adapters... sorry, I don't know, I don't use autofocus at all, but I'm sure they're out there. Thanks so much for coming through. Oh... I only have two micro 4/3 lenses... Ttartisan 17mm f1.4 and Meike 35mm f1.4. Both really inexpensive, and both completely awesome. On the GH5, they create beautiful images, at least in my opinion. I also adapt my vintage Minolta lenses and my Helios to the GH5 sometimes, but mainly I use them on my S5. Hope that helps.

I'm not looking at any TH-cam rules. I live in a world where I create theatrical work that is often times almost three hours long, films that are often over two hours, and I believe in long content, but I'm not mad at anybody who thinks it's too long for them. Sorry, I didn't see the second half of your comment. When I bought my Panasonic s5, I just went down to B&H with all of my equipment because I knew I had enough to make a straight trade. But generally, I would use either ebay, or if I needed something specific I might go with mpb, although mpb will always wind up giving you less once they get your gear in their hands. They'll find something wrong with it and they'll nickel and dime you to death. In my opinion, eBay is always the best way to sell
