- This weekend, fans of the Grateful Dead are flocking to Chicago to see one of rock 'n' roll's most revered bands unite one last time. The group's "core four" surviving members will play the final three shows in their 50-year history. Dean Reynolds reports.
I saw the Dead at Soldier Field in 94... They had this guitarist named Jerry as I recall.

yep i was there. it was 7/23/95. i just celebrated the 32 year anniversary of it last night. everything was so in tune for me last night. just like 32 years ago.
June 30 1995 at 3 rivers stadium in Pittsburgh was my last show. Who knew 40 days later the Captain would cross over. August 9 1995 is the day the music died. Life hasn't been the same RIP Jerry every show was a miracle.
the music hasnt died. in fact the music never stopped. the scene is more alive than it ever has been. jerrys death has not been in vain.

I just found my Husband in the crowd! He is the guy in the tye dye in my icon. I borrowed his photo. He was front row and second row all 3 nights. This was great!
Saw them 8 times. 1st Fillmore East September 1969 right after Woodstock. They had not given a great show at the Fabled Music Festival and so they actually did not headline the evening if I remember correctly, Country Joe and The Fish who had performed brilliantly at Woodstock did. Every evening after that they either headlined or had the whole evening to themselves and would do an acoustic set, then Jerry would sit in with The New Riders of the Purple Sage on pedal steel, and then Grateful Dead would finish the evening with an electric set. It seems Grateful Dead learned from bands like the Allman Brothers Band who I believe told The Dead: "you guys are great, you just need to tighten it up just a tad." They did. Their jams became more interesting and more based on the song structure of the particular tune they were playing and also benefited greatly from the new found collaboration between Robert Hunter and Jerry.

In 1970 I moved from a thriving metropolitan area just outside of New York City to just outside of Orlando. Orlando, FL was a small town then, Disney was just breaking ground. I was attending a small liberal arts college named Rollins in Winter Park. My parents had put the vise grip on me: that if I did not study Pre-Med and get accepted at a medical school, they would not pay for my education and they would have nothing more to do with me. I must have lost my cahunas because I caved and pretty much stopped going to concerts for the next 6 years. Finally, after failing to get accepted at a medical school I accepted the fact that my family was dead to me and started to live again. But they had pretty much disowned me, and I had to work like a dog to get caught up on life. And I was living in Florida with only a limited opportunity to see Grateful Dead. I saw them in '78 at Curtis Hixon Hall and then again in 1985 at the performance hall at USF. That was the last time I saw them.
People who went to these shows: "Once in a life-time change to see the Grateful Dead again!"
Deadheads who didn't: "Grateful Dead ended in 1995 when Jerry died"
Old School Deadheads: "Grateful Dead stopped when Touch of Grey came out."
Real Old School Deadheads: "Grateful Dead stopped when Pigpen died in 1973."

That about sums up the complaints in the comments about the band.
I was there, in Chicago, just as I was at 47 other Grateful Dead shows when Jerry was alive. (and dozens of other post - Jerry configurations) -- And I can say: first of all, they let the media call it the Grateful Dead, a bit, but THEY didn't call it that, and it wasn't on the tickets, etc. .... Just "Fare thee Well". Moreover, if you weren't there, you missed out on a wonderful time, that was AS CLOSE to the actual experience as anything has been that I've been to since Jerry died. And then, we are reminded: It was, is, and will be about THIS MOMENT and the Music. Regardless of what the haters say.

Easily the MVP of the 1995 shows. I’ve revisited them over the last week and was surprised how in the pocket he was, and how much tighter they sounded.

Absolutely, it's like that with a lot of bands, for example the Who stopped when Keith Moon died, Jefferson Airplane when Hot Tuna was formed, On the Other hand some bands can still stay "the band", like the Stones or even Little Feat after Lowell George died. Or even Genesis, for the first three or four albums.

Trey was a perfect frontman for this. His voice has a very similar tone to Jerry's at times and his guitar playing is very similar to Jerry's and his guitar tone is the same warm cozy feel of Jerry's overall just a great pic probably should have brought him into dead and co instead of that other guy
What I recall was the stage had 2 full set 🥁 on stage.
I realize I'm beating a dead horse here, nyuk nyuk, and have an incredibly unpopular viewpoint. But THINK about it----If they REALLY wanted to honor the legacy and history of the actual Grateful Dead....they should have (and COULD have) played the Polo Field in GG Park for FREE and broadcast it on any number of media outlets. THEN went and cashed in in Chicago or wherever else. Think about THAT

Exactly. No disrespect to the rest of the band, which was "Grateful Dead-ish" a couple of times after Jerry passed, but I gave up "Beating a Dead horse" a long time ago. Nothing was ever even close to the same after "He's Gone". And nothing's gonna bring him back. When I told my good tour bro Tyler (veteran of 13 VW bus engines since the 70's or what ever it was to entail 13 bus engines...) the morning that we found out about Jerry, I woke him up down the street from my house sleeping in the good old bus, and I told him the news, and he said, "YES!!! Now we can get on with our lives!!

When they started gigging with John Mayer, I tuned out any of the “new” shows for good. The live archives are more than sufficient to keep me occupied whilst on a long drive.

I guess what you could do, JasonSmith, is what the alleged "Grateful Dead" want you to. You can spend almost 200 bucks to buy the full 3 show Chicago dvd set they're putting out. Ooooh, in limited edition, how elitist. Great way to artificially inflate the price as well. Anyone else remember "misfit power" What I find so heartbreaking and disgusting is what it's turned into. If there was ever any doubt, these Fare Thee Well shows have confirmed and solidified it. They might as well have changed it to "rich, elitist, privileged power" Because that's what you have to be to have attended these shows, and support them as a band. It's turned into the complete anti-thesis of what they represented and supported- the disenfranchised and economically disadvantaged. The unattractive misfits who don't fit into the norm. The ones who weren't dealt the same privileged hands others were. The ugly ones with unpopular opinions. Not the pretty boy jocks and cheerleaders types with money and privilege. Yep- that's what they've changed "misfit power" into.... "rich, elitist, privileged power". "Do something for the fans" ? "The right thing to do " Hardly. How about having the shows streamed for free ? How about having it on the radio (as changed as that is, it could have happened) for free ? Or here's a revolutionary idea----how about playing in the park for free ? The Polo Field can accommodate 100k easily. The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Fest has been doing for free for many many years. For.......free.

It is this way with many bands that used to have ideals. Concert tickets are three-figures, if you have $5,000 you can get an "experience" where you get to go backstage, eat a sandwich and get a photo op with the celebs. If your looking for ideals rock music is not the place.

The LAST Grateful Dead shows were in July of 1995. JUST ACCEPT IT PEOPLE.....geezus ! The 'core four' have played together many many times since Garcia's death under monikers like The Dead, and The Other Ones. They've played with Trey many many times since Garcia's death. It's over. It's been over for 20 years. Get over it. Accept it. The Grateful Dead played it's last gig over 20 years ago. I mean if you wanna talk about how they're billed as the "Grateful Dead" incorrectly - which they're not, they're called "Fare Thee Well", then you should consider that they went under that name even after founding member Ron died, but that's different cause he's not as iconic or important as Jerry? I think that's bullshit. If they could go on after all the keyboardists deaths as GD, then they can surly call themselves GD after Jerry. It's their band afterall, they can call themselves whatever the want.

Nikola Stancevic Yeah I suppose there's some valid arguments there. But it's comparing apples to oranges. None of the keyboardists were architects of their sound nor founding members. Fair argument with Ron, but when McKernan died, they were still in the first few years of their existence, he performed with them for only the first 6 years. They hadn't even come close to fully establishing their legacy. And they had SO much more going on than Pigpen's raps. He wasn't even onstage half the time, and at best was a rudimentary instrumentalist. . He was not a part of what was known or became known as their signature jam or sound or approach. He was a straight ahead 4/4 bluesman who hated LSD. I'm not negating his contributions or trying to put him down, he was clearly a major part of their initial success. I just think no matter how you look at it , comparing the lack of Garcia to the lack of McKernan or any of the keyboardists does not understand the legacy or importance of what they were. Apples....and oranges. Some figures loom so large in the actual music, the history, the legacy, and band's identity it becomes an insult and travesty to call the band the same without them. Just my asshole opinion. I saw the legitimate GD just over 100 times, saw Garcia solo over 40 times, saw the Dead, The Other Ones, Lesh and Friends, and Furthur dozens of times, have 1000s upon 1000s of hours of tapes and cds (I've had many people tell me my GD and JGB collection is one of the most impressive they've ever seen) ,and I'm an accomplished musician myself who's recorded studio albums and played 100s of live gigs. Not tooting my own horn, just letting you know I feel I'm pretty well qualified to comment on it.
Nikola Stancevic Actually the shows WERE billed as The Grateful Dead. Check the tickets and the merch and all the labeling. "Fare The Well" was the name or title of the group of shows or concerts. Kind of like in the old days when they'd give a group of shows a moniker like "A Dance Concert With..." or "A Chinese New Years Celebration"
Anthony Phillips Well, actually McKernan was obviously a founding member, but he wasn't "really" a keyboardist. He didn't actually play most of the keys on the first album, and hardly played keys live either. His role, identity, and contribution was almost entirely as a blues frontman for the straight ahead blues numbers. That's why they got Constanten.

When Jerry Garcia passed away, the remaining members released a statement that the band was no more - there could be no Grateful Dead without Jerry. Funny how GREED makes people toss their principles in the trash heap. These three shows were nothing more than a Sell Out. Ka-Ching! Now, I'm not saying Mr. Weir can't perform with Bobby and the Midnights, etc. etc. but the Grateful Dead now exist on vinyl and digital media only. And it should have stayed that way. Did The Doors go out on tour after Jim Morrison died?

For the 'surviving members" to sell tickets under ANY moniker such as "The Dead" or "The Other Ones" or anything that has a tie-in to "The Grateful Dead" is simply a Sell-Out and a betrayal of the pronouncement that was made at the time of Jerry's death. And if anyone thinks this was the 'last time' they'll do it, you're ignorant of human nature. When their accountants tell them they're down to their last $10 Million or so, they'll announce yet another 'reunion tour" because, you know, it's all about the fans!

At one time, I thought that the Grateful Dead was an important part of my very young life in the San Francisco area and as I toured the US coast to coast. Still young, I quickly saw that it was not all that and I got out by the grace of God. It was a combination of the times being the sexual revolution with devastation caused by all the drugs that people that would take and were actually given to the audience by members of the band.
Dead heads would bring their infants and toddlers to shows and force pot smoke in their little lungs. Dead-heads were like a cult; a religion so to speak. A very unhealthy and dark religion. A great many of dead heads ruined their lives and their families. The band was and still appears to be a group of self serving rock stars. At least Kreutzmann was willing to admit that drugs were bad for the band but I was disappointed that he was so clueless to leave out that it was really bad for the fans. Many dead-heads died very young and while chasing a fake utopia called the Grateful Dead.
Moral of the story: Don' ever idolize anyone for any reason and don't follow them down that dark lonely road to nowhere. Stay on the straight and narrow, find a great career and work hard and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Be grateful to God but not the dead because there is a real living God who loves you. Peace
...and a LOT of those VW microbusses festooned with psychedelic art work were eventually crushed and shipped to Japan to come back as Toyota Camry's! For the Dead Heads who survived and didn't have their brains totally baked, my hat's off to them. For the burnout's - and there had to be thousands - my LIMITED sympathies.
The untold truth of dead tour. Woodstock, despite popular consensus, was a humanitarian disaster with drug ODs, sexual assaults, rapes all played out to hippie anthems.
