- This is the COMPLETE (15 min) and 1st appearance of Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir on the David Letterman Show, April 13th 1982.
It was on April 13th 1982, during the Grateful Dead's Spring Tour, on a night-off between shows at Nassau and Glens Falls, NY.
The introduction is funny with Letterman teaching Jerry how to play "Proud Marry" on acoustic guitar...
Afterwards, Jerry and Bobby revealed terrific humor in describing SF in the "early years", the GD community, "Dead Heads" et al...
Hilarious and classic stuff.
In the middle, they perform two acoustic songs :
5:55 "Deep Elem Blues" and then, after a break ...

I think he must have had the "frog in a milk of glass" line running through his brain the entire interview and once he got to say it, he checked-out. But you are correct, high as a kite. Weir the ever "merry prankster" later in his life says "I never did drugs beyond the acid tests".

@@gabbyc816 nah bob was Jerry's bag man on tour for awhile because he could be trusted not to dip and not to give Jerry too much. Obviously I wasn't there so I just speculate based off of my own chemical romance. I really don't think Bob used needles as a method of delivery. When you watch the live shows multiple times you can feel the ebb and flow of the quality of drugs during certain stretches of tours. Sometimes they play really slow but tight. So I think ludes. Sometimes Bob is jaw jacking and pressing to find the vocal harmony, I think mediocre blow. Sometimes they are on fire hitting on all cylinders, I think hi quality blow with a bit of downer to take the edge off. Lol I managed to catch Jerry live 5 times in the early 90s but it was so wildly popular and packed with people, just not a comfortable space for an introvert like myself. I was more into kicken it with my friends, doing drugs, eating good food and talking with girls outside in the lot. It was only five years ago that I started to understand what the music and lyrics were all about. Well Blues for Allah did bring me to a great head space on new years day 2000. I was basically ok with the prominent thought of suicide. Had too much of four or five things including lsd and crystal at a y2k rave. Got home nervous breakdown followed I thought wtf am I to do? Then I remembered I had picked up blues for Allah at a thrift store on vinyl so I threw it on. The arrangements just seemed so complex and gorgeous to me, I remember thinking you know what Jason you're okay you're not a bad guy you do deserve happiness. All big eyed and smile crying. I'm sure there was a breakup involved with some female along the line that led to it but I took off into some great things after that. Coach soccer for 10 years learn how to Mix house music. Excelled at that. Played out at least 100 times a year. Met a lot of people. Discovered roots reggae, developed my own method of seamlessly mixing riddims x riddims it then became my mission to bring roots reggae to as many heads as possible.. had 8 different club residencies mixing my reggae 45's over the next decade...blah blah blah why I'm telling you this I have no idea.. well I mix Hard drugs so I rant on occasion. Hopefully someone finds this entertaining.
I was fortunate enough to see 11 shows with Jerry. He even waved at me once! Nassau Coliseum, we got tickets and the seller said, "They're behind the stage." We said, "Hey, we'll take anything." And they were literally BEHIND the stage! It was just us back there with a security guard. We had to move around to see the band members through the scenery. Then Bobby said, "We're gonna take a short break, we'll be right back," and they walked right under us. I yelled "Jerry!", and he looked up, smiled, and waved. I miss him every day. #ThankYouJerry

i love being in that frame o'mind ...but on national tv? ...they're pro's. i stumble on to this video from time to time and it always makes me smile, from the guitar lesson skit, the interview and the performances. the GD were special and i miss seeing them. RIP Jerry.
Beautiful sentiment about letting fans tape the shows. "When we're done with it they can have it". And Weir's comment is absolutely true too- "If we ever make a real good record they'd probably buy it anyway... and the tapes bring back memories and stuff"
This to me epitomizes the Grateful Dead- freely sharing the fun and magic of their music.

The Dead were so refreshing because they had no commercial intent or chase for the dollar. Their chase was for great music and times and feeling.

The acoustic side of the band is INCREDIBLE and VERY underrated. Reckoning is such a great album and is chock full of great acoustic Dead.

Yes grew up in Lucas valley San Rafael Marin. Played reckoning for my mom who was from Sweden. Never an American citizen and she loved it. My dad too who was born in 1914. They gave me fifty bucks to see Jerry at Warfield. My first show was Cal expo. Tripping. Brent had his two daughters on his keyboard. Will never ever ever never forget that. A band beyond description

He represented San Francisco sure but Jerry and Bob also represented a lot of the southern music culture of country folk,blues ,soul,etc....Jerry could play the hell out of Appalachian Banjo Music ..He was a monster of all of it.

Shows you how amazing WEIR is! Everyone caps on his singing etc. but this guy is like an Eintien of back up guitar. Jazz, blues, country, and all the rest. Weir is very much underated.
Completely underrated as a rhythm guitarist. People have to realize how hard it is playing between two virtuoso's (Lesh & Garcia). Weir figured out how to fill the spaces between.
He's underrated in everything. Some of the most iconic Dead songs were Weir. Truckin? Throwing Stones? Estimated Prophet? He doesn't get the credit he really deserves. As much an important part of Grateful Dead as Jerry was (no disrespect to Jerry at all).
The man doesn't amazing solo show as well good to see him in my own little happy park it was one of the greatest shows ever

In 66 & 67 after the Fillmore Garcia would come back with us to 1400 Montgomery St. and keep playing. I don't remember ever seeing him not playing. We all would be puffing the weed and drinking wine while Jerry was playing. His playing would get our attention, all talking would stop, our attention focused on him, and he would look up smiling at us. He would know he had us.
Bob is so expressive when he sings, I never noticed how many faces he makes!! so funny.

Add Velvet Underground and P-Funk and you get the most important American bands. GD only gets you so far. They are no doubt amazing.
I totally get what everyone here is saying about each of these bands, all great and important in their own right, but ultimately art is subjective and so what I think the original comment is referring to is the unique cultural phenomenon that is the Dead. They are unlike any band that has existed before or since.

I always laugh how tv cameras always manage to zoom to the rhythm guitar during a lead guitar solo.
Even more annoying is when they cut away in the middle of a good guitar solo and start zooming in on one of the background instruments, such as the bass guitar or the drummer (a good example is the 1970 live version of 'Proud Mary' by CCR).
You're so right - except that it makes me cry, not laugh. Seriously, how unmusical do you have to be to do something like that!
Oh, but golly gee, Weir's guitar is so much prettier! It sparkles, it shines, it has decorations. I suppose that's the cameraman's thinking, if any thinking is involved. These guys, cameramen, are visually oriented, not aurally. Sad but true.

One of the most egregious and persistent examples of this is the first Crossroads guitar festival organised by Eric Clapton etc. It's meant to be about the guitar, for pete's sake, and yet as soon as the solo kicks in, the camera person/director cuts to the rhythm guitarist or even the bass player. Just incredible.
There really isn't a bad time to Zoom in on Bobby's guitar, solo going on or no. After all, it's what Jerry was listening to during his solos. Maybe listen to what you're seeing, and explore another facet.
We count ourselves lucky to have lived in interesting times.

Bobby's unique style of playing never ceases to amaze. It was wonderful in the context of the Dead -- a large and loud band -- but what a joy to hear it more out in the open here. These guys are just so great.

+LisaDawnn I've been permadosed since 1979 or so myself, so I know the look well....Yeah both Bobby and Jerry are almost certainly coked up in this video - but his demeanor and speech have been like that since he blew his mind as a teen. Even in an age of total spaciness Bobby was legendary for being spaced out.... :)

I wasn't a Deadhead as a kid but now I love their music and their free spirit! They made music because they loved making music, not for the money. They had wonderful attitudes. RIP Jerry Garcia
The thing is, the "Dead Family" became a burden to Garcia and the thinking is it pushed him further and further into his addiction to keep it rolling. He once said If he could play one show with the dead, one show with the garcia band and one show with grisman and company each week, he would be happy as a clam. The Dead tours become a grind to keep the extended operation rolling.

My friends and I followed the Dead for over five years and made it inside for more than 55 shows. I still have the tickets to this day.

Got off work, went to a fellow Dead lovers home and watched this mesmerized with fellow DoD guards and Dead lovers. Never forget that night.. Magic.
If the music can't move you, your""Dead", If it can your "Dead". No way out of this but to go down a rabbit hole. I love the memories these guys gave me and all my friends. I wish our youth today could touch a hint of this happy world. I watch them disasterbate on their phone's daily and feel sorry for them. It's hard to touch the world through a fish tank.

Man I miss going to see The Dead some of the best times and memories of my life-Southern California mid to late 80's-Jerry Garcia will always be the King to me-his presence and aura was magical-I see that now after seeing hundreds of other musicians and bands over the years none of them had his magical gifts just by being there.You never realize when you were doing it that those were the best times you will or would ever have.Jerry Garcia lives forever and his spirit will never die!!
It's true. Have seen hundreds of shows- some incredibly fine players to more recent good, hard playing bands and no one could hold a space like Garcia. It was collective and yet at the same time entirely personal. A real spiritual experience. He is a special Buddha of all three types hoped for in this world 1) liberates via word 2) liberates via music and art 3) liberates via creation of sacred space in which self realization is possible.

These two guys really knew how to share space and play off each other as both guitar players and vocalists, and they still swing like crazy even without a drummer... or two.
