    I think that the english word "mindfulness" is a little difficult because there is so much ambiguity in it especially when translating from the South and Southeast Asian languages.
    In English, mindfulness, in the context of meditation, means to indicate that the actions that you are performing are "fully engaged by your mind". For instance breathing is an autonomic function of your ancient brain. When you are breathing you do not need your conscious mind engaged in the task. When you breath mindfully your mind is fully engaged in a task that it need not be. Humans can survive without thinking about breathing, so why do it? Why focus on something that doesn't require thought?
    The point is to train your capacity to focus starting with a task that is simple to perform in a quiet controlled environment. If we asked you to focus your mind in a highly chaotic stressful environment it would be too challenging to start. If we asked you to recite 100 digits of Pi while while being hunted in the jungle by a jaguar 🐆 and defusing a bomb strapped to your chest you would probably be overcome by the different things vying for your attention including the emotional stakes and fear of the situation. So we start slow with a concept similar to the concept of progressive overload but isolating your mind as much as you can. Memory athletes are well acquainted with the benefits of this kind of mental training.
    I agree with Mr. Portal the word may not be the best to describe what we are doing when we perform mindful meditation. I suspect that his approach to meditation is quite similar to my mindfulness approach. At the end of the day they are likely just semantic issues and Mr. Portal is aware of that.
    Many blessings to the moderator and Mr. Portal himself. I really admire his philosophy and approach to life.

      Mmmm he’s also differentiating… at what point do you drop the technique? After all the technique in and of itself is only a tool. The word “meditation” has issues too. In that we attach meaning and ego and concept to it. A meditator does not need any of that… practitioners however do. Practitioners are not meditators they are merely practicing. The question then becomes what are they practicing? Awareness of the breath? No awareness of everything and no-thing all at once. Complicated to the monkey mind. Hence the need for techniques. Including stupid “mind-full-ness”. Stupid word and bastardised by so many capitalising from it.
      That said. Anything that takes you closer to the truth, to the source, to the no-thing-ness - well there is value in that.

    • @thedoubtfuls

      He says he likes zen but zen is Buddhist where mindfulness is the first factor of enlightenment. Even with emptiness u need attention to maintain it, and that selective attention is sati or mindfulness.

  • @taoplakrapong9816
    @taoplakrapong9816 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Noooo he doesn't understand mindfulness. Mindfulness is there for to SEE/INSIGHT that everything comes up and fade away, no matter which fenomena pain, pleasure, thoughts, smell etc. If you keep notice this you will reach a point like you standing in a burning house , the only thing you want is to quick out of there, because there is nothing to attain (out of the wheel of karma, attain nirvana) What he mean by meditation, so empty the mind is concentration meditation. But with concentration meditation you learn/see NOTHING about the fenomena, just reach a point of completely stillness. Concentration meditation alone NOT lead to Nirvana

      i agree to some of your points as well as with Ido. Both are working on the physical level. Samadhi (concentration) can be practiced in so many ways. What you and Ido Portal just said is also a part of the process. As you walk along the path you will realize that those process also helps. As what the teacher said, "you can learn and gain wisdom from anything, anyone. They are also what we call teachers."

      That’s a weirdly passive aggressive response from someone with a title like “zen wisdom”. And tbh people get there egos very caught up in what they think they are doing when they are meditating for the very fact that definitions matter to head driven people. In english the word is poorly selected - you further established that in your response.

    Fascinating how much people wanted to attack a guy who took issue with using a certain word. And you all practice meditation? To what end? I think he makes an excellent point. Words can catch the mind. And mindfulness is a poor translation. I think you will find he’s also differentiating technique from actually being… at what point do you drop the technique? After all the technique in and of itself is only a tool. The word “meditation” has issues too. In that we attach meaning and ego and concept to it. A meditator does not need any of that… practitioners however do. Practitioners are not meditators they are merely practicing. The question then becomes what are they practicing? To me, mindfulness is better described as increased awareness of your memories and feelings, allowing your conscious mind to process everything as opposed to when you’re sleeping and your subconscious does all the processing.
