Why are they so expensive

There are a number of factors, first being the cost of the material and technology of the product. The brands is also another factor however they will stand by their products should there be faults. South African taxes we can certainly factor as well. These speakers are a great step into the premium phase, you'll find they produce pretty much the same quality to the more established brands yet they produce more more power for much less.
