2:33, 3234 still survives today in Mattapan. It was rebuilt last year at the MBTA’s Everett Shops, with the installation of interior components and inspections by MBTA personnel at the Mattapan Car house in Dorchester, MA.
This is amazing! Funny how some of the shots I have taken recently and compare it to 30+ years ago from when this was filmed, a lot has changed but most stayed the same
When I moved to Jamaica Plain in 1979 the trolley was still 15 cents and the Arborway line was famous for being the most crowded and slowest line in the whole T system. If you caught a trolley at Park Street at 10 PM, it would still be standing room only. During rush hour, you'd be waiting for half an hour for a trolley, then it would pass you by because it was completely packed with commuters.
Lol me too, before everything was so gentrified and "perfect". Although you also gotta realize that the image and color etc quality, possibly deteriorated by age, of the old home video footage along with the gloomy wet messy wintertime, probably adds to that "dirty old gritty Boston"image in our minds. lol 😉
It's funny that the primary reason the T refused to put the street cars back in to the Arborway was it would interfere with vehicle traffic. Now we put in dedicated bus ways and bike routes and force all vehicles to stay in one lane.
That PCC waiting for the truck to clear had a ground fault (noted by the spark underneath). That was negative current jumping into the puddle on the ground due to terrible rail grounding. Not dangerous outright, but not good either.
@timslager5966 Good point yeah that much snow in September in Boston is pretty unheard of, in fact almost impossible come to think of it, and NONE of that gloomy weather couldve possibly been in August!! In fact yeah that date can't possibly be correct cause all the leaves are off the trees, which in Sept in Boston they woulb barely have even started changing color let alone falling! This footage looks more like it was in the period Jan-Mar. I have indeed wondered, and sometimes seen what I'm sure is some kinda proof, like what I said above about the foliage, if dates given for all.manner of historical footage or photos, even like in books or professionally made documentaries that sort of thing, are sometimes wrong.
11:29 this is why streetcars disappeared from Boston and we were left with the current Green Line. The delays caused by things like this where the trolley obviously can’t just go around these guys are very frustrating for commuters and often a bus just makes more sense
I'm not sure what you mean by disapeared? They're still there just not the PCCs except in Mattapan of course, as well as the Boeings. Although unless you mean that maybe all the active sections of track now have thier own dedicated separated section of the street vs totally sharing with the vehicular traffic, so I suppose in that sense they aren't truly "street cars", but the trains are all still there.
This shows just how crappy BOEING-VERTOL built the LRVs in that the older PCCs are literally flying down the street while the LRVs struggle to make speed.
Yep. The BOEING-VERTOLS were badly built and various problems plagued them early in their service lives. They last ran in Boston on March 16, 2007, after 30+ years of service. The SF Muni Municipal Railway (MUNI) retired their SLRVs by the Breda LRV2/3s in late 2001. MUNI and MBTA were the only two transit operators in the United States to purchase the United States Standard Light Rail Vehicle (USSLRV).
I was noticing that too and I remember the signals at least on the surface D line back then and how they seemed to work and was wondering how even back then those two trains could've possibly been following the signal rules when following so close to each other(?)
Those lovely, innocent, days of cigarette ads on the sides of the trolleys!

Mattapan is its own neighborhood
Now
Its separated from dorchester
It will be replaced with the current Green Line cars when the newest ones arrive. That will be sad. Philly still uses the PCCs all over.
Several are still running in 2021 on the Mattapan Trolley line.
With a different paint job of course.
Only the 3200s without the large picture windows are still around.
The other cars have either been scrapped or sent to museums.
I thought they looked familiar.
This video was taped in December of 1985!
That D901 bus with the 6V71 is heavenly!
Car 3230, shown at 28:00 still survives today in Mattapan. I rode it in March 2022.
Got held for truck work
This is amazing! Funny how some of the shots I have taken recently and compare it to 30+ years ago from when this was filmed, a lot has changed but most stayed the same
I concur with that sediment
I don't miss the weather there, but boy do I miss Boston!

I used to live by Symphony Hall Station, and the E branch never changed with its lack of service. I would walk to either Hynes or Mass Ave.
The REAL mbta!
back in the days in the 1980s the mbta and Back when cars were cars.40 years Later wow....
I'm from San Francisco some of those light rails and buses look and sound very similar to San Francisco Muni back in the day.
When Boston was still gritty and not yet a swanktuary city. I miss those days. 😢
Lol me too, before everything was so gentrified and "perfect".

I wish they recorded the old buses aswell. I tried finding videos of the old buses traveling, couldn't find anything.

There was only one lane each way on Centre and South Streets from Hyde Square south.
That PCC waiting for the truck to clear had a ground fault (noted by the spark underneath).

Those Trollies look very classic!
My childhood days
With the air cars, you can hear the air brake release just before they take off.
Reminds me of the Urban Assault Vehicle The EM-50
This video was from August-September of 1985, the last few months the T was running PCCs on the Green Line.
Funny, I don't recall having snow in those months....

Then the cars need to use a different street
They should have kept things the way that they were.

They need to bring the line back, at least to Hyde Square. That's a no-brainer.
Wait, those PCCs had horns?
And ones that sounded good?
Jealous!
That was for operation on the "D" branch; along with a second high mount headlamp.

The days when a trolley could be followed closely by another trolley without worrying being rear ended by careless Operators.....

Boeing, now has problems with the 737's,mayhaps the problems migrated from Philadelphia[where the LRV's were constructed],anyway,Karma!! Thank you 😇 😊!
