On January 6, 2022, the Orange line was having delays due to disabled train at Oak Grove. Sometimes, trains will be turned back in the opposite direction to maintain service on the line. In this brief clip, you’ll see a train depart in Malden Center with passengers destined for Forest Hills travels traveling on the northbound rail in the southbound direction. Hope you enjoy this first upload of...

I wish the platform at Dempster Street would be lengthened to accommodate 4 car trains or longer. I think it can be done.
The narration and video are good but I didn’t care for the music or more specifically, the way you chose to use it . Thank you for making the video anyway I grew up on the south shore in the 60s and 70s and love video from the period and historical vids in general with a bias for Boston
I miss Frank's voice on the green line
Nice channel Byron!
0309 is still listed in the reserved bus fleet meaning for non-revenue service (retired) and used for historic fan trips as of 2024. Hard to believe it's 29 years old. 😮 Keep on going RTS 0309, everyone loves you. ❤️
Wait, where were the 01800s? I love those old classic pullman cars, but they are old, worn out and have a janky ride. In 1992, the Red Line Station Modernization Program was still underway and South Station and Broadway were the last to be renovated and completed in the summer of 1993. The utdcs were also still relatively new, only about 5-6 years old. Too bad the really old ones from the early 1960s aren’t in service anymore, but the seashore museum in kennebunkport, maine has cars 14501455 preserved. Also, think that the 15 and 1600s were only 5-6 years younger than the 1400s and outlasted them by three decades longer. They were originally due for retirement in ‘94, but that year came and went, with the T not finally announcing replacements for the Silverbirds until 2015. The pullmans are now 55 years old and among the oldest rapid transit cars still running on any metro systems in North America, the U.S. and in the world.
I'm 47, and live in Houston,TX now. Born andcraised in Boston. I was 17 in the Spring of 1994 when they were testing, and eventually had them up and running by summer of 1994. Hard to believe they are going to retire these now. Times flies and man I miss Boston and the T. Public transportation down here can't touch Boston. I'm old enough to remember riding the Silverbirds, Redbirds ( when they were painted Blue !!! ) 1400's and 1800's Do not take the MBTA for granted !
Weird how the 01400s had no door chime and the 015/16 and 17s have door chimes as do the 18s. Also, the 15s and 16s were built six years after the 14s and yet retired nearly 30 years ago and those trains are still running in regular passenger service as of 2024 at a whopping 55 years and counting. They are the oldest rolling stock since the retirement of the 0600s on the Blue Line and some of the oldest rolling stock of any metro system anywhere in the country and in North America, as well as some of the oldest rolling stock of any metro system anywhere in the world. Their Longevity. The 015s and 16s would outlast their specified service life of 25 years by another three decades.
This is the Ashmont Station that I know and grew up
what's comical is the system is in better shape then, than it is now. god bless democrats
They need to bring the line back, at least to Hyde Square. That's a no-brainer.
I like the design those mp36 locomotives have. I like how the cab in the front is slant ended. Also like the LED display on the bottom front in between the ditch lights that says “10” or “11”. Both are currently at mpi in boise, idaho for overhaul work.
Living in Chestnt Hill at the time, I can recall the Riverside line being constructed by the Perini Corp.
Reminds me of the Urban Assault Vehicle The EM-50
they should kept the PCC s
I wish the T left the elevated line and just refurbished the tracks, stations, and steal beams. They also could have just added the Northeast Corridor as a second line.
Music is too loud and sounds like the Benny Hill Show - turn it off please.
We as women come a long way. We are trying to end sexism one step at a time
Not happy with the vantage point, looking at the inside of the car isn’t the least bit interesting. The camera could have panned around been closer the front to get cab forward view .
Today's Newton Corner is a harrowing experience for the uninitiated. I've driven it my whole life and it still raises my blood pressure.
Type 5s, PCCs, and Boeing LRVs all in the same operation. Now if only they did this railfan charter several years later when the Type 7s started to arrive. That would be 4 generations of trolleys in the same train parade, each stuffed with railfans! ☺️
I worked on this project thats my red truck at 5:15
Everyone living the moment, not a Dunkin Donuts in sight.
These old Bluebird / Redbird cars, they were the last true subway cars on the T. Ever since the MBTA has purchased what I call metrorail cars.
So the vintage 1400’s had no door chime but they did have a distorted BING-BOMG PA chime?
When Boston was still gritty and not yet a swanktuary city. I miss those days. 😢
Lol me too, before everything was so gentrified and "perfect". Although you also gotta realize that the image and color etc quality, possibly deteriorated by age, of the old home video footage along with the gloomy wet messy wintertime, probably adds to that "dirty old gritty Boston"image in our minds. lol 😉
I GREW UP ALONG THE ORANGE LINE. @ 22:00 I COULD SMELL THE PISS!
Great video. Cool street cars. Quétion Dĩd they fix those flashing traffic lights? I like those cool classic cars.
I wish they recorded the old buses aswell. I tried finding videos of the old buses traveling, couldn't find anything.
These trains are 30 years old
I like the New Medford SLASH tufts route. - I like how they say Medford SLASH tufts....on the announcements. I take it from Medford Tufts and you usually get a type seven which is nice. with the inidvidual seats so I get my pick of the seats. =) its nice you can switch from the D train to the E UNION SQUARE to MEDFORD TUFTS at North Station or Lechemere as well.
Why would you want to continue to subject yourself to the torture of wearing a mask (that wont even protect you from Covid) - any longer than the government forced us to? The sheeple are truly amazing.
People that are still too afraid of Covid, etc. to still be wearing masks .. LOL . when they dont work except as ameans of government control. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
These trains are 30 years old
No rust on the roofs
I'm glad I got to see, ride and film it on color movie film many decades ago.
It's funny that the primary reason the T refused to put the street cars back in to the Arborway was it would interfere with vehicle traffic. Now we put in dedicated bus ways and bike routes and force all vehicles to stay in one lane.
There was only one lane each way on Centre and South Streets from Hyde Square south.
Rode this many times from late ‘60s to mid ‘80s…always fun…I used to think the Eisenhower sign (above tracks) at 24:35 was a bygone remnant….but I read somewhere that it was actually a prop from a movie that was not removed after filming….not sure if anyone has better info on that…
@kevinmoynihan8087 The movie was "The Brink's Job" released in 1978, staring Peter Faulk. There were scenes of a restored two car train originally built in the late twenties that never made it to the film. Allegedly the reels were stolen ! I'm not kidding. Rent the movie, you'll love it !
Interesting…thanks….I remember when that was being filmed in Boston….didn’t realize the connection with the sign…
Not much different than riding the Red Line today.
Back then, the 1800 series was brand new.
. The PA chimes sounded bad at 6:02 but it could be the VHS quality or the old school cars actually had those creepy sounding chimes. I guess this was the year before the 1800 series were introduced?
At 36:21, I can't hear a thing the conductor says due to the squeaking wheels. It sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher. 😄
I miss the hawker siddley orange line trains so much
When I moved to Jamaica Plain in 1979 the trolley was still 15 cents and the Arborway line was famous for being the most crowded and slowest line in the whole T system. If you caught a trolley at Park Street at 10 PM, it would still be standing room only. During rush hour, you'd be waiting for half an hour for a trolley, then it would pass you by because it was completely packed with commuters.
I used to live by Symphony Hall Station, and the E branch never changed with its lack of service. I would walk to either Hynes or Mass Ave.
I looked at this to see the neighborhoods of Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain where I lived as a young man back in the eighties. Trains...well I think it takes a special kind of locomotive fetish to follow and film trains for hours on a cold and wet wintry day. But thanks for a limited peek back in time at the environs I used to inhabit back in the day.
I actually wrote a fiction novel, with the Watertown Line being the primary inspiration. I want to eventually get it published, but just don’t have the money right now 😢
Hi. Watching the years from 1979 - 1989 I rod those trolleys on those tracks during the years I didn’t know what to do with my life. The trolleys provided the transportation to my eventual enlightenment. Since then, having found what to do and did it, I empathize with the young folks experiencing the same but having the extra burden of an unreliable transit system on their journey. Thanks.
Boeing, now has problems with the 737's,mayhaps the problems migrated from Philadelphia[where the LRV's were constructed],anyway,Karma!! Thank you 😇 😊!
This video was from August-September of 1985, the last few months the T was running PCCs on the Green Line.
Funny, I don't recall having snow in those months....
@timslager5966 Good point yeah that much snow in September in Boston is pretty unheard of, in fact almost impossible come to think of it, and NONE of that gloomy weather couldve possibly been in August!! In fact yeah that date can't possibly be correct cause all the leaves are off the trees, which in Sept in Boston they woulb barely have even started changing color let alone falling! This footage looks more like it was in the period Jan-Mar. I have indeed wondered, and sometimes seen what I'm sure is some kinda proof, like what I said above about the foliage, if dates given for all.manner of historical footage or photos, even like in books or professionally made documentaries that sort of thing, are sometimes wrong.
