Off-Grid on a Sailboat, How we get Internet? | S08E07

  • Our favorite thing about this lifestyle is the ability to live in wild and remote parts of the planet. The feeling of waking up in our own home and yet surrounded by wilderness is indescribable, and has been the main driving force behind all of our efforts.
But in order for us to release weekly episodes we need to be in a place that has relatively fast and reliable internet, something that is hard to come by when sailing in remote areas. So heading off grid and then rushing back to civilization has always been a challenging balancing act for us.
But all of that is about to change...

My advise: make a tether to that dish so that you can take it out and if you lose your grip it will not end at the bottom of the water. The chance is small, but the cost of failure is high. When it slips out of your hand you even might be able to grab the tether so that it doesn't slam in the boat. Good luck with Starlink!

From fellow McCotters re-fitters. We installed the Starlink RV in Oriental, NC and then left Beaufort offshore to the Bahamas. It worked flawlessly the entire time. I’m a consulting engineer living and working on our Gulfstar 39 and it has made life for my wife and I so much easier. I leave it permanently mounted. It’s a waterproof unit meant for exterior use and seems not to mind saltwater spray, and yes the full waves, crashing over it. Mounting and dismounting always runs the risk of the dreaded “splash”. So far so good. Best of luck to you and your family!

Our antenna has survived hurricane winds, on our hilltop house on the NS coast. We've only ever lost internet during a couple very heavy snowstorms. The antenna heater kept it clean but there was too much snow in the sky for the satellite signal to get through... Which should not be a problem on a sailboat. 😉

When they changed the rv version to roam, they put a specific clause in it. "Land Use Only." Lots of chatter about the cruisers using the rv version. Some say they will cut off anyone using this version on the water and force them to go to the marine version. Maybe they will come out with a coastal cruiser version, say 50 miles from land. The marine version is crazy expensive, so most youtubers couldn't afford that.

I'd be surpised if we didn't see a leisure craft tier at some point. They could place a size limit, of say 20m, and automate a cross check on the position with AIS and IMO data periodically. That way most commercial vessels and bigger yachts would be pushed onto the commercial service, which is still cheap compared to VSAT. It just depends how much they're loosing, which they could probably calculate using their own location information, AIS, and IMO data...

My wife and I sailed the coast of Alaska in the 80's and 90's for 15 plus years for months at a time. The only "communication" we had with the outside world was a vhf radio and the am band on our am/Fm cassette stereo. My back stay was set up as an SSB antennae and since I didn't have an SSB Transceiver I connected the radio to that to see what I could get. It did nothing for FM range but I could get AM stations from Kodiak to California from skip or bounce of the radio signal off the ionosphere. That was very helpful for weather forecasts especially from Kodiak as whatever they were getting we tended to get a day later in Prince William sound. I also liked listening to radio reader on Public radio every day and their jazz and blues music hours. There wasn't really any internet at that time so we didn't miss it.
The only navigation equipment we had were maps, a clock and a compass.. This was long before GPS was a thing. I managed to not get lost or run aground on these trips but I took navigating this area seriously. We were normally on our own and there usually weren't other boats nearby.
We preferred being disconnected from civilization while we were out there but we weren't trying to run a You Tube channel production company at sea. Thanks for the video your daughter seems to be doing very well. Fair winds and following seas. Sail On!

We've had Starlink since they began coverage in Puerto Rico almost a year to the day now and we're absolutely pleased with the service so far. As the constellation has grown, so have our speeds and up-time. Was wondering how long before tech savvy Jordan would sink his teeth into it. Glad it's happening before sailing with Isa. Haven't watched the episode yet (we have a specific and ceremonious time for watching you guys), but I'm sure we'll have thorough exposure to the install and commissioning. Happy surfing!!!

So I’ve had Starlink for over a year now. It will be a game changer for y’all I’m sure. I’m sure you’ll figure this out, but I think you’re really going to have to take it down once y’all are cruising. It’ll be fine when you’re sitting still, but I think it will be difficult to keep a lock on the satellites once your under way. I hope I’m wrong. I would also be very careful about the connections (on dishy and the wire.) That salt is probably going to be murder on those connectors. I’m so excited for y’all. Hope it works out perfectly and you guys are able to use it everywhere you go! Good Luck!

Great episode. Two things: the leg of the dish fits into a standard fishing rod holder, which makes mounting it really easy and second, I can’t figure out why Starlink seem not to have considered the cruising sailor market. They seem to think everyone on the ocean is on a superyacht with unlimited budgets. In fact the volume marine market is cruising sailors, who are no dissimilar to RV users, and certainly can’t afford to pay thousands a month. There is no rationale for their maritime system charges.

Great job with that installation. Yes, Starlink is a game changer for the internet world. It’s gonna make your lives so much more convenient for internet access. I did read recently that Starlink was going to restrict the use of the RV model for boating situations. Seems that they want boaters/sailors to use the Maritime version. After seeing the differences in pricing, I can see why they would do that. I think it’s ridiculous to have such a disparity. Since Starlink can track your position maybe they can keep the pricing of the RV model for boat use at the current rate and charge a bit more if your internet use is, let’s say in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, if that’s the reason they want to push the maritime version. Have your heard this too? Cheers 🍻

I have the same setup in rural NorCal. Since I am outside the normal coverage area, went with the RV setup too although I use it at home only so far. Faster than the local dsl but I still only get 12-25m down. Tips: If it moves very much it has to re-locate / calibrate. The connector at the dish likes to slip out on certain ones. The dish I started with had to be replaced after a heavy rain. You may want to make it a shower cap, secure the cable at the dish somehow. Congrats though, overall it works well for me, curious how it does for you.

Do yall anticipate having issues when moving from country to country? If I'm not mistake, the terms of service only allow 2 months of 'international' usage outside your registered country. I hear it's not really enforced but I would like to hear you're view on that. If this actually works long term it would certainly open up the cruising lifestyle to lots of people.

Great comment! We are trying to understand this before buying into Starlink. Curious, have you been cruising several months away from home with Starlink RV? I ask because the terms of service may restrict long-term travellers. If it has been a couple of months since your arrival in the Bahamas and service is still there, that is good news. But, my understanding is they can cancel your contract as the service is meant for weekend warriors and occasional RV vacations.

REALLY CONSIDER mounting your dish semi permmently with the mount sold by STARMOUNT-SYSTEMS LTD in California. Their mount takes your dish and removes the post and motors and it then fits into their waterproof and ONCE TALL mount, its beside your solar and does not shade it and you can use it underway. The Starmount is the same as the MARINE MOUNT BY STARLINK. I've been using Starlink since it came out and ABSOLUTLEY LOVE IT, they now have almost 80% of the world covered now with all the new satilites put up in the last 2 years. Great vid. I am impressed with the main camera mount. Perfect. Looks like the Family is doing well. Isa is such a pretty, cute and happy girl. She is lucky to have fantastic Mom and Dad. Great job.

Hey wonderful you all. Technology technology, everybody wants technology. It will be more wonderful when all screens will be three dimensional. Thanks much for your long-lasting episodes. One Maybe big problem in the near future though is the horrendous amount of satellites that are covering our planet that will block sunlight and our vision of space! Always problems to surmount. Well I'm rambling on now so I'll hang it up and say a d o. Goodbye for now, Jordan Taylor Isa and Oso.😀

We've come a LONG way. 1990's on a US Navy ship we had satellite communications. 9600 baud, multiplexed across 4 channels. No idea what the system cost was, but the auto tracking antenna was about 6' diameter.

I do agree that the rv version is not meant for surviving an ocean crossing. It doesn’t really even like a Texas thunderstorm ⛈. It’s awesome though and we have enjoyed less outages than any other internet service. We love it!

you could put a fishing line running through the area that wires are stored. Then use it to pull wires through, while having a second line connected so it's always there. Also could have pvc tubing installed professionally too contain the wires neatly, with access points that are accessible exits.
So if you get a short it's easy to find, replace.
Holy crap, star link is wild...i remember when Sat's were first used too broadcast sporting events. Then cell phones replaced ship to shore systems. Loran,.....its just unbelievable.

    Dear Sailing Project Atticus family,
The handyman magician Jordan always doing amazing things! 🧙‍♀
But I kinda worried when I saw he didn't put any silicon around the cable "clam" you installed outside on the boat. 😐
I put silicon on anything that will get a bit of rain or water, hehehe! Just saying... of course, I am hardly a pro like you, Jordan. 😝
And beautiful Isa, her smile is a ray of sunshine! 👼
    Hugs from Panama!
