The USA version use to always be superior mechanically since a lot of rushed developers used the time it takes to localize games to fix any bugs and add content they didn't have time for. Then they sold the US version again in Japan as an improved version. It doesn't happen so much these days since developers can add to a game after it's released thanks to the internet.
There actually has been a re-translation of the game by a fan, from what i have played with it installed it is like a different game, things actually makes sense, the thoughts and motivations behind everything is more elaborate and way easier to follow, the characters and their personalities makes much more sense too.
90´s and early 00´s translations were very poor indeed, i remember watching some animes as a child that i rewatched recently were the dialogue between characters isn´t at all related to what´s going on or just insane (they answer or shout random things to one another). As a kid i just cared for the battles but re watching them now makes me want to put fan made subtitles to everything ^^

Same with Remake...it's literally an entire different game in Japanese. It's astounding how many plot holes the English localization is creating and how much the character's personalities/their behavior towards other characters change. It could be interpreted as an instruction to attack while the tail is up because it's going to counter with its laser (i.e. you have to attack it while the tail is up to stop it from countering, like the counter attack is already being prepared.) It's cool that you didn't make the mistake that I (and others) did, though.
It wasn’t in the original Japanese version. It was added to the cutscene in the North American version, and the Japanese got it later with their international version.
I'm sure they'll change it in the remake. God, just thinking of how the remake will be cucked makes me not even want to play it. Damn I miss Square Soft.

I recently started playing this about 2 weeks ago, the game is so good! It’s a shame about some of the censored content, but I’ve honestly been enjoying it so much I haven’t noticed any issues. I must say though, I’ve been amazed by some of the stuff that wasn’t censored. For example, despite the game being rated 11, you can steal some of Tifa’s underwear, thousands of people died when Sector 7 was destroyed, and of course there’s the infamous Aeris scene. That’s crazy.
Take a look at gaming history and how long it took those lazy bastards to give us the proper and complete versions of several major games throughout the years. They deliberately hold back anything they can due to their own shitty pride and greedy grubby fingers.
I've always found it odd that the Steam/PS4 versions never had a redone translation, considering that the GBA versions of I&II, I've and VI all had their translations completely redone.

In Japan it is Aeris to this day, how even people think japanese guys would be able to say Aerith? In Original it was Aeris, in US it was misstranslted to Aerith, then it was fixed in Europe back to Aeris, after Square fusion with Enix they changed it to Aerith again, to please US market.
Dude, the Japanese language doesn't even have a 'th' sound. The ス character is sometimes used when translating English to Japanese, but not the other way around, as this character is pronounced 'su', which we wouldn't need to change since we have the sounds in English to represent ス. Therefore, the ONLY logical way that explanation would make sense is if the game were written in English FIRST, then translated into Japanese, THEN translated back into English... which, I dunno, may be the case, but it seems highly unlikely. エアリス, her original name in Japanese, has the characters 'e (as in bet) - a (as in father) - ri - su. It simply would not make sense to claim this was supposed to be pronounced with a '-th', because they don't have that sound. However, English words are sometimes translated into Japanese where a 'th' will be pronounced as the ス character (because they have a hard time saying the 'th' sound, in general, which only further debunks the "translation error" theory/myth). An example of this would be the name 'Garth', translated ガース. A more accurate translation to English might be Erisu or Eyarisu (my Japanese pronunciation isn't perfect, but the above is pretty basic and 100% accurate), if the name was created in Japanese originally. My guess is that some executive at Square North America (or whatever) knew that 'th' translates TO ス (and it only does sometimes, and other times it's translated as 'the Japanese character for T+vowel, e.g. 'th' in Thomas translates to ト, or 'to'), and then they either panicked, wanted to cause controversy, or wanted to point out a 'mistake' (could be for a variety of reasons), so they leaked this. Then because it came from a high up employee inside Square, people believed it, and spread the rumor as fact. It makes no sense, from a linguistic perspective, AT ALL. From a linguistic perspective, it is impossible... unless it was first created in English, THEN translated to Japanese, THEN translated BACK into English... and, it might have been, but I doubt it. It's Aeris, just like in the game. No mistake.
I agree that Aeris sounds better, and I'm the last person to acknowledge the FF7 universe media released after the original, but they've used Aerith as the official translation for pretty much everything now. It would also fit your explanation if Square used the english word Earth as the basis for her name, which I've heard somewhere before. I don't have sources to quote but it'd make a lot of sense and fit with the theme of her character and the game in general. Her having a "western" name probably strengthens this argument. I suppose it's all speculation until someone from Square gives us an official explanation.
It's Aerith. Japan knows about the West, they can create Western names if they want, they're not idiots who can't comprehend a foreign sound. Look up Aerith on Wikipedia, there's a link to a Famitsu article where the devs state it was supposed to be a near-anagram for "Earth."
Aerith's name started out as an anagram for earth, but the pronountiation for Aerth was just weird, so they decided to make it Aerith instead of trying to create a perfect anagram. Don't nitpick the use of 'near-anagram'
5:40 it´s been a long time since i played it but can somebody tell me how was it that japanese players could care or value Zack´s death without that cutscene?. I barely remember his parents being in Gongaga Town but apart from that and some mentions by certain party members i don´t exactly remember when and how he was revealed by name in the game
You have to go out of your way to get it. After the whole Mideel thing, when you regain control of Cloud, the game never tells you to go back to Nibelheim. of course you can revisit any of the cities/towns, but if you the player chooses to go to Nibelheim, and then make your way to the basement in the Shinra Mansion, Cloud gets a flashback & the Zack scene plays. Since the game never told you to ever revisit Shinra Mansion or even return to Nibelheim, it's understandable that a lot of people wouldn't have naturally seen it. I think the reason the game never told you to go back is because, well, the scene wasn't in the original Japanese release & thus it wasn't programmed into the game.
If Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes out in my life time (~joke~) then I'll be glad to see another video from Censored Gaming regarding all of the changes that were made to it~

Honestly, I’ve been playing this game, and I haven’t found too many noticeable errors. Of course, there’s the infamous “This guy are sick.’ line, and the mistranslation from the first boss. But I haven’t really found any weird phrases so far. It is really a shame how much stuff was lost during the conversion to English, it’d be truly awesome for someone to create a proper translation. Judging by how much of the game appears to have been translated already to show the differences between the Japanese and English versions, I doubt it’d be too hard.
I wouldn't say Square's translation/localization was in its infancy at the time of the release of Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger had much more coherent and grammatically correct scripts than Final Fantasy VII, and were released beforehand. All three are awesome regardless.

the hades summon spell also had dialog attached to it in the japanese version. the debug room also had a real odd change with the test of the battle system.

We get that impression in the English/American version too; Elena blames Cloud for doing her boss in, and to do someone in means to kill them. She was supposed to say that he messed up her boss, or something like that.
The part about how some of the translation errors and odd turns of phrases have become integral to the game's legacy makes me wonder how they're going to be addressed in the remake. Will there be little jokes nodding to the mistranslations?
Considering that the remake looks like the same "Emo Yaoi looking J-Pop music video entirely in two shades of green and light blue" retcons that have been plaguing and ruining the entire series since those garbage spin-offs and that shitty Advent Children movie, I actually want nothing to do with the remake. This is a tad pedantic I realize but the meteor from Safer Sephiroth's Supernova ability doesn't hit the party, it impacts the Sun causing it to go supernova (hence the name) which is what hits the party
It's never named in game. Sapphire Weapon is the one that attacks Junon at the very start of disk 3, when the party is split and Tifa and Barret are set to be executed. It gets killed with the Junon cannon in that same event. You only see it in a couple of pre-rendered cutscenes, and is the only one you dont fight yourself.

Rather ironic that in the FF7 western release they gave us a couple of extra hard bosses when they originally did not release FF5 and 6 in the west because they claimed they would be too hard for western gamers.
Every time I see something new about censorship differences between (normally) Japanese releases and the American ones, I can't help but be both irritated and also ridiculously confused..... I mean seriously, some of the stuff that gets changed/covered up/removed (specifically with regard to female characters) is mind-boggling. Even more when you take a minute to consider the absolutely sprawling behemoth that is the Porn Industry....but even without that, the content of a whole crap-ton of movies, and now even TV shows more and more, is absolutely without question more extreme than virtually anything Japan has or (likely) ever will cook up to send our way..... Granted there are those few exceptions, and of course people are quick to point out the most extreme cases to defend ALL cases, but nevertheless it's just idiotic....really what's the point altering/toning down violent and/or sexualized content when you can turn on the TV and be bombarded with far worse?
Developers then: Lets add some more content so the players can enjoy this game even more. Developers now: Lets censor the crap out of the game so we can avoid to offend anybody. Of course this doesnt mean that all of the developers are like that.
I don't mind fixing grammar issues and things like that, but I really wish they didn't censor the word 'shit', which was uncensored in the original PS1 release.

I agree that Aeris sounds better, and I'm the last person to acknowledge the FF7 universe media released after the original, but they've used Aerith as the official translation for pretty much everything now.
It would also fit your explanation if Square used the english word Earth as the basis for her name, which I've heard somewhere before. I don't have sources to quote but it'd make a lot of sense and fit with the theme of her character and the game in general. Her having a "western" name probably strengthens this argument.
I suppose it's all speculation until someone from Square gives us an official explanation.
It's Aerith. Japan knows about the West, they can create Western names if they want, they're not idiots who can't comprehend a foreign sound. Look up Aerith on Wikipedia, there's a link to a Famitsu article where the devs state it was supposed to be a near-anagram for "Earth."

Aerith's name started out as an anagram for earth, but the pronountiation for Aerth was just weird, so they decided to make it Aerith instead of trying to create a perfect anagram. Don't nitpick the use of 'near-anagram'

You have to go out of your way to get it. After the whole Mideel thing, when you regain control of Cloud, the game never tells you to go back to Nibelheim. of course you can revisit any of the cities/towns, but if you the player chooses to go to Nibelheim, and then make your way to the basement in the Shinra Mansion, Cloud gets a flashback & the Zack scene plays.
Since the game never told you to ever revisit Shinra Mansion or even return to Nibelheim, it's understandable that a lot of people wouldn't have naturally seen it. I think the reason the game never told you to go back is because, well, the scene wasn't in the original Japanese release & thus it wasn't programmed into the game.
If Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes out in my life time (~joke~) then I'll be glad to see another video from Censored Gaming regarding all of the changes that were made to it~

One other thing is that the attack for Choco/Mog (Deathblow!) in FFVII International was actually given the Wind element, unlike prior versions where it was non-elemental.The materia itself in JORG was also non-elemental.

Honestly, I’ve been playing this game, and I haven’t found too many noticeable errors. Of course, there’s the infamous “This guy are sick.’ line, and the mistranslation from the first boss. But I haven’t really found any weird phrases so far. It is really a shame how much stuff was lost during the conversion to English, it’d be truly awesome for someone to create a proper translation. Judging by how much of the game appears to have been translated already to show the differences between the Japanese and English versions, I doubt it’d be too hard.
I wouldn't say Square's translation/localization was in its infancy at the time of the release of Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger had much more coherent and grammatically correct scripts than Final Fantasy VII, and were released beforehand. All three are awesome regardless.
Ted Woosley handled the localization for FF6 and CT but Michael Basket did FF7 which was rushed and had more technical difficulties.

It got even worse. Final Fantasy VIII and Chrono Cross also were also full of tons of completely washed out translation issues, which was pointed out in this video. the hades summon spell also had dialog attached to it in the japanese version. the debug room also had a real odd change with the test of the battle system.

There was also huge problems with the european localisation. For exemple in the french version it was Said that Tseng was killed in the temple of the ancients
We get that impression in the English/American version too; Elena blames Cloud for doing her boss in, and to do someone in means to kill them. She was supposed to say that he messed up her boss, or something like that.

This is a tad pedantic I realize but the meteor from Safer Sephiroth's Supernova ability doesn't hit the party, it impacts the Sun causing it to go supernova (hence the name) which is what hits the party

It's never named in game. Sapphire Weapon is the one that attacks Junon at the very start of disk 3, when the party is split and Tifa and Barret are set to be executed. It gets killed with the Junon cannon in that same event. You only see it in a couple of pre-rendered cutscenes, and is the only one you dont fight yourself.

Every time I see something new about censorship differences between (normally) Japanese releases and the American ones, I can't help but be both irritated and also ridiculously confused..... I mean seriously, some of the stuff that gets changed/covered up/removed (specifically with regard to female characters) is mind-boggling. Even more when you take a minute to consider the absolutely sprawling behemoth that is the Porn Industry....but even without that, the content of a whole crap-ton of movies, and now even TV shows more and more, is absolutely without question more extreme than virtually anything Japan has or (likely) ever will cook up to send our way.....
Granted there are those few exceptions, and of course people are quick to point out the most extreme cases to defend ALL cases, but nevertheless it's just idiotic....really what's the point altering/toning down violent and/or sexualized content when you can turn on the TV and be bombarded with far worse?
