From experience the Fox shocks suck, they constantly failed on my 19 TRD pro until I traded it back in at 30k miles. My current 23 40th build has the toyota shocks and none have failed. I've also decked it out in 80s toyota touches and I get compliments all the time. The only issue I had was I had to remove the windshield cowl and put foam tape along the contact points that go under the windshield along the plastic cowl. Now my 4runner has a totally silent ride. You may run into this windshield noise problem with years 21-23. Easy fix if you can tinker and follow a youtube video.
The Limited is the only 4Runner with Fulltime 4WD! Same 4WD system as the GX and Land Cruisers. All other 4Runners are part-time 4WD (2WD on the pavement).
I really love the TRD off road trim but I really think the SR5 premium is best for me cause I dont go off road or anything up or down hill I mainly drive my kids to school
Great video! I was searching for the specifics of the one we just bought. Our’s is a 2021 TRD Premium X Series. I don’t see many like it.. it seems like the TRD Pro just without the skid plate and special shocks (Fox). PS: love your pup! My boys went crazy when they saw her and were jealous of the treat ha! 4Runners truly are the BEST for dogs with them LOVING our upgrade from a Civic!
Just found your channel and this is exactly what I was looking for. I've never even heard of some of those names and cool to see the history of changes. Thanks!!
@The Silver Emir: Thank you for making this video series. I am looking at 2024 Toyota 4Runners and have narrowed it down to SR5 Premium and TRD Off Road Premium. Not sure if the off road goodies are worth the $3k upcharge.
I'm also in CO. With about a $35k budget today, would you recommend a used 4Runner or used GX460 right now? Or, do you think there's not enough value in used at the moment and it's worth spending more to get a 2024 new? Any dealers around here you recommend?
Not the easiest question to answer. Definitely a subjective choice based on your needs and preferences. Note that with the GX460 I've never driven one, so I can only make a comment based on the specs and what people have said online. This really comes down to how you plan on using this vehicle. Is it going to be dedicated to off-roading and overlanding? Or will it primarily be a daily driver with some weekend warrior trips to the mountains? Daily Driver with weekend warrior trips - The GX460 wins. This is the boat I'm in these days, and if I could trade by 4runner for a GX460 for no cost I would do it. With a wife and kid my 4runner has turned into a family hauler with light off-roading in the mountains. As a result I wish I had the V8 with a 6 speed transmission instead of the V6 with a 5 speed in the 4runner. I would also make a bold claim that 99% of 4runner owners would be better served by a GX460, because 99% of 4runner owners never crawl rocks. But the negatives - worst fuel economy and I think it recommends premium fuel. Also the rear hatch swings out instead of up. And the window does not roll down for a dog. Now for true dedicated off-roading the 4runner still wins. I believe I read the 4runner has better approach angles and better customization with aftermarket modifications. But again I think less than 1% of 4runner owners actually need those benefits. Now to answer your question about used, I checked autotrader and the options for a GX460 is more limited today compared to a year ago when I made this video. But there are still some deals for the 460. There's a few in the Denver area for 35k with under 75k miles. As for the 4runner, there's hundreds in the Denver area, with plenty under 35k. If I were in your shoes I'd answer the question first of what kind of driver will I be. Daily driver with some offroading in the weekends? Or a true dedicated overlander? And then once I answer that question I would test drive both vehicles to see if the 4runner ride quality bothers me at all. Also the used market doesn't scare me at all, I would not buy New. My 4runner is 2016 with 100k miles and it runs like a clock. Not a single thing has gone wrong with it, and I am NOT a meticulous owner when it comes to maintenance. As a result if I see a service history and carfax for any used 4runner and gx460. I would feel very confident that it would last a long time.
Yes that is in part 2 I hope to release that this weekend. But to answer your question KDSS is a $1750 Option for the TRD Off Road, Off Road Premium and the Venture. The Limited Trim and Nightshade uses XREAS which improves Road Handling even better than KDSS.
I just bought a 23 sr5 premium package. This thing is a tank 💪🏻
No it's not
Yes it is!

Which ones had KDSS? Is that in part 2, or did I just miss it?
