    I purchased an Olympus OM-10 today and found the shutter to be sticking. I was going to return the item and get a refund, but I've just followed your tuitorial and it completely fixed the problem. Thanks so much, maestro!

    Thank you so much! Your videos are always quick, simple and easy to follow. The lighting and camerawork makes it super easy to follow each step.
    All I needed to do is reinstall the cover plate as a previous repair shop damaged one of the clips (the cover was hanging loose on one end). I wasn't sure how to safely remove the plate, so your video came in very handy!

    I've had an OM10 for about 40 years but eventually went digital about 12 years ago. Occasionally it used to wildly over-expose for no apparent reason. I only found out which shots had been ruined when I got the films back from the processing lab, which obviously caused some big disappointments. I've just realised thanks to your video that the problem that I experienced over about 20 years could have been due to a sticky shutter. It would be great if this will fix the problem! After seeing this video I'm going to get my (mostly) faithful old OM10 out of storage, check it and service it, then shoot a couple of rolls of film.

      If the over exposures occurred the first couple of shots after the camera had been resting for a few days than you are on to it.

      Does it latch without batteries? If so might be in the release button area. If not, might be a shutter latching issue around the magnet area. And that is might... Just vamping a bit to give you some unrelated possibilities as there is much to check in a systematic manner for a proper diagnosis.

    Another great video.
    Not unrelated - I had a mirror-shutter timing problem on my 'new' OM2 which was fixed by cleaning the curtain guides/rails (on 'B' shutter setting and depression) with (firstly) a fine tooth brush (clean one! .. ha ha), isopropyl alcohol, and later Servisol (isopropyl plus a very light lubricant) and that cured it completely. I suspected that the mechanism's role was disrupted by friction along the said guides or possibly elsewhere?. Either way - it is flawless now. Thanks for these videos!
    PS - I did also clean the curtains with a fine bud and isopropyl alcohol, this sec hand OM2 had been neglected, so I guess over time some fungal like spots (and mild oxidation?) began to form?
    PPS - I also used Servisol on my Zorki 4, and the curtain shutter mech is far more slick now than it was, great!

    Great video as always. Would you happen to know why my OM2N produced an uneven exposure/shutter capping in Auto mode at 1/1000 ( touching red or over 1/1000). I am expecting at least overexposure when the meter needle goes beyond 1/1000 in Auto mode. Is this a normal behavior with OM2N? Manual mode at 1/1000 is fine. Thanks

  • @FTL92

    I actually had a few issues. First the batteries were dead, so I changed them, but the mirror kept stuck halfway down, so I readjusted It whilst opening the case to get access to all the levers. But I still have an issue. Whenever I press the shutter release button not strongly or if I am holding the camera vertically the shutter speed will be completely off the displayed on the lightmeter. I guess it is the 1/60 default shutter speed. Is there any chance of getting rid of this? The only work around until now is pressing the shutter release button firmly down and hoping for the best.

    I had two of these cameras back in the late 80's and had nothing but grief with them and many shonky camera stores would fob them off as the purchasers problem with the battery. It was a design flaw on what could have been an excellent camera. Later i was able to get an FM2 and never looked back.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The magnets of the OM 20 and OM G located on the ceramic circuit of the mirror can also be accessed and cleaned in a similar manner although they are positioned differently than the OM 10. The mirror box circuit cover plate of the OM G is made in such a manner that when you try to lift it clear it is blocked by the mirror stop post. By carefully twisting the cover plate you can clear the post. Warning... to much twisting will crack the cover plate or if you slip while apply the needed pressure to create the twist you could break the mirror. Once you have the cover plate removed create a slot for the mirror stop post in the cover plate for easier installation.

    Hello Fix Old Cameras, love your videos!
    I thought I might comment that I have an Olympus OM-1n with an intermittent problem: the reflex mirror will stick on its way up, especially at lower shutter speeds.
    I am about to try cleaning and oiling at points under the bottom cover with care and conservative application. It is worth noting that the mirror lockup lever on this camera does absolutely nothing (it just spins!). I'm thinking that ultimately I may have to disassemble and address that problem, so I have purchased two other OM-1n cameras to learn with (um, two because the first I bought turned out to be just fine!).
    Anyways, I am still seeking your advice on this matter. I searched through your catalog for sticky mirror issues. Any resources in this area?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When the mirror sticks, check to see if the second curtain completed its travel. If not gentle nudge with your thumb nail to see if the mirror drops. If it does, you might need to slight increase the second curtain tension.

    • @kevinbay9542
      @kevinbay9542 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the reply, Fix Old Cameras.
      I should clarify that the mirror sticks about 3/4 the way up, not when it reaches the top. If I nudge it with my fingernail it'll continue its cycle and all curtains seem to travel fine. There is no capping, etc.
      Also, I have discovered that the mirror only sticks in this fashion if I'm firing the shutter while holding the camera in landscape orientation. If I fire the shutter while in either portrait position or upside down, the mirror travels up and down normally without sticking.
      The mirror lockup knob on this camera doesn't do anything. It just spins.
      I wonder what's going on. I used the camera for about six months straight last year before this started occurring.
      A repair manual for an OM-1 suggests that this is b/c of a certain spring.
      I have two other OM-1n cameras. One works okay except for capping at 1/1000 and the meter seems off. The other I bought for parts only, as the shutter is inexplicably jammed and someone has removed parts of the mirrorbox, etc. So...I could potentially go through the process of removing the mirror box and trying to replace a spring and reset the mirror lockup knob.
      Any further thoughts?

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue is probably related to the broken mirror lift knob linkage. The FOC video on replacing the battery wire briefly touches on the timing issues you will encounter on removing the front plate to access the mirror lift control knob and linkage.

    • @kevinbay9542
      @kevinbay9542 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your response, FOC. I am happy to report that I was able to remove the mirror box via your instructions and re-attach the mirror lift knob. The camera seems fixed now, and I'm excited to get back to shooting with it.

    Thanks for the video! Although my OM10 has no felt strips, I was able to pry open the plastic cover and identifiy the solenoid and the magnet and clean both surfaces, however it did not solve the problem. The camera speed seems ok down to 1/60s, if lower the shutter stays up more time than it should. This is clearly noted with speeds below 1/8s. Although speed inficaters shows 1/2s or 1 sec, the shuttle stays open several seconds... Try lubbing the shuter guides and mechanism but to no avail. Also the lens diafragm was slow but I disassembled the camera lens (cleaned optics also) and relube the diafragm mechanism wich now is working ok so it's not the camer'as body diaphragm lever beacse the lens lever is ok now and it works ok at higher speeds. Thanks in advance for any suggestion!

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a possibility that the timing switch is the culprit. Try cleaning the ceramic circuit board near the timing switch terminals. Also you might clean around pin 10-13 IC.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be sure to remove the felt strips on the left and right edge of the cover plate. With the strips removed, you should be able to see a slot on the left side of the cover plate. The slot will allow clearance of the mirror post that is causing you trouble. You may also carefully remove the cover plate. Make sure you do not snag any of the components on the circuit board as you slide the cover plate free.

      +Fix Old Cameras I have the same problem as Amy B. I removed the foams, but there is no hole for the mirror support to go through. I'm unable to remove the plate... • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plastic cover can be carefully pulled from the mirror box to allow better access to the magnet. Be very aware of the back edge of the cover plate. Make sure it does not catch on any of the components on the ceramic circuit.

    • @FixOldCameras

      Is it getting full power? Insufficient release voltage will cause the issue you described. The fact that the bulb reset release the camera probably indicates the camera is functioning mechanically.

    • @johnminer8374
      @johnminer8374 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume the camera has full power. It has brand new batteries. The battery check light and sounds suggest full power. The meter seems to work fine.
      I took the camera into a local repair shop. He took it into the shop in the back and came back 2 minutes later saying, "This camera needs a new 'mirror magnet assembly' part and since these parts are no longer available, I can't fix your camera." I have seen references (including your OM-10 video) which suggest cleaning the release magnets might help.

    • @FixOldCameras

    Hi, I have a OM2n that seems to have the same issue as shown, does the same fix applies for the OM2n too? Thanks !

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shutter of an OM2n is electronic control and does have magnets involved and yes if the latches surfaces of the magnets have a film on them it can cause a similar issue. There is a magnet that is located to the back of the bottom of the mirror box accessible in a similar manner. You might have some difficulty removing the small screw located between the photo diodes. A custom bent L shaped cross point bit is helpful. The screw driver tip has to be heated to red hot and bent and then properly tempered so that it is strong but not brittle. If you can access to the mirror box ceramic circuit also check the timing switch to see that it opens with the first curtain Also clean the board around the switch terminals.

      Manual speeds slow or hang open, auto speeds and meter indication normal? Not the magnets. But the same board still needs to be accessed. It might be the manual speed VR under the ceramic exposure circuit board or the switch that is located on the right back corner on the top side of the same ceramic circuit board. And thank you for your interest in FOC.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan Stern
      Fix Old Cameras has limited exposure to the OM-30, recalling that it takes 5 batteries it has similar, but a somewhat different shutter. Therefore it is doubtful that the technique demonstrated in this video would apply directly to the OM-30. Although because it is a magnetic latched shutter, it, like all cameras with a magnetic shutter holding latch release for the second curtain, can suffer the same symptoms and cause. It is a matter of how to access the shutter holding magnet latch surface and what is required for that procedure does not presently come to mind. Thank you for you interest in Fix Old Cameras.

      Pliobond, most hardware stores will carry it and it is available from internet suppliers.There is also adequate information on its usage on the internet. In can be thinned with MEK (methyl-ethyl-ketone). A word of caution: Pliobond and MEK are flammable and have strong fumes (they smell) so use with care and heed the label. Excess uncured adhesive can be removed with isopropyl alcohol. Pliobond is a contact cement but can be used successfully in other applications. Heat will temporarily soften cured Pliobond, but once cooled remains strong. That attribute can be used to advantage in some assembly applications.

      If the the display turns on and off as it should and the shutter releases than you could have a bad CDS cell or a short in the CDS wiring or a short in the ASA/AV loop resistor. Another more remote possibility is a defective control IC within the meter circuit.

      Many thanks for the prompt reply. I think I fixed it. I sprayed a lot of switch cleaner around the dial that selects between manual and auto, and also the on switch. The fault then seemed to come and go at first, and then after another liberal spraying and drying out, everything seems to be okay now.

      If the mirror is stuck half way it could be that the battery is bad or the battery contact or battery lid need to be polished or cleaned.

      It is possible the wind idler gear is jammed. Go here www.miketrost.com/archive.html and look at the simply solution for a jammed OM-1... The OM-10 has a similar wind idler gear set-up that can jam the camera. It is accessible by removing the bottom cover.
