Building A 500 Gallon Offset Smoker: Making The Semi-Insulated Firebox

- Joining the firebox to the bbq smoker cook chamber is arguably one of the most difficult, yet important aspects of building a BBQ Offset Smoker. In the video we will join the firebox to my 500 gallon cook chamber.

Oh, I remember that green coating. It was a bitch to grind off. I was not able to burn it off like you did (the city I live in would have sent out the fire department and charge me for it).
That coating is for rust protection. That pipe was nent to be directed bury in the ground.
So you should have actually cut the hole bigger on the pit itself that way the Firebox can actually slide into the pit and not be welded flush against it and you would have not have needed all the spare metal. From Texas BBQ capital in Alaska welding on boats in the Bering Sea
Thanks for the support my friend!
@@MeatNGreetBBQ great job we all learn from our first pit build next time just slide the bottom of the Smoke Box into the pit more itself as well bro
@@shaunreid6497for sure bro! Good news is the pits been running great these past couple years and now I have much better idea for when I build… a 1000 gallon next 👀👀
Why put an insulated firebox still gets hot and burns in between
Not sure I understand what you’re asking?
What’s the reason for two fire boxes?
I hope you’re taking Mike plates on a regular nice and hot when they come off that smoker😂 I’m a plumber by trade and getting me to do plumbing after a full day work good luck😂
100% bro Mike gets free bbq for life haha
I'm really surprised I haven't seen a comment with this: PLEASE WEAR A FACE SHIELD WHILE USING GRINDERS. If one of those wheels comes apart, goggles are WHOLLY INSUFFICIENT to protect your FACE from fragments flying off after spinning at 11,000 RPM.
You’re like 2 years too late boss 😅 but I lived!!! God is good 🙌🙌
@@MeatNGreetBBQ it wasn't just for you. I was an iron worker before my current job and I've had them come apart. I've also seen them buried in somebody's welding shield when they came apart instead of embedding in their cheek. It's a really underrated hazard.
Friend I starting on my offset soon I don't really know yet where to put my firebox how far below cooking grates did you put yours.
I’d play around with it but I put mine just slightly below grate level. Mine was semi insulated so where the actual fire is compared to where the fire is is visually is a lot lower.
Good stuff man! I’ve got my half 250 ready to marry to my 500. Will be doing that here in a few weeks. Appreciate you
Thanks for the support brother- hope this video helps at least a little 🙏 let me know how it goes- remember… anything is fixable as long as you save the scrap steel. 👊
I'm invested in your journey for any information as I start my endeavor. Recently purchased my 500 gallon tank.
Well friend I hope my videos help! I tried to make videos that I wish were in TH-cam when I started. Keep me posted on how things go.
@@MeatNGreetBBQ I will for sure! Can you tell me in detail on how you measured the chamber for the firebox. Or how you wish you would have
@@christopherjohnson8536did you ever build your tank big dog? Curious to see how it went!
Good work gents! ALSO 🤣 @14:30
Rocking and rolling boss! Haha I saw my life flash before my eyes 😭
Mystic Smokers has the best layout video. Awesome to show your process. I made so many mistakes that would have been saved if had watched it first.
Yeaaa unfortunately he dropped they video far after I completed my smoker haha. But agree. Great video he did. My videos for the folks in the back yard getting a little Wild West 😅
@@MeatNGreetBBQ I think we can all agree these are the best types of video! Much appreciated!
@@gmtech26358 haha well said, friend!
Were both of your tanks elipticle ends? If so would cutting a circle work to combine the 2? Both my 500 and 250 tanks are elipticle and am looking to figure out how to combine
Hey brother. I would suggest joining the propane tank smoker Facebook forum. I honestly have no real way of explaining what I did in this message that would be more detailed than the video we made. One take was round and the firebox was flat with curved edges, so it was a pain to figure out.
Hey, any way you can tell me the welding details? What kind of rods used and amperage on the welder? Thanks
Hey brother, asked my buddy who did all the welding and this is what he said:
First pass “root pass”
1/8 6010,80-90 amps
Second pass”hot&cap”
3/32 7018,80-90amps
Hope this helps!
The throat opening was the scariest part for me. Eventually i had to cut two more inches off the smoke chamber to make it work/fit right. Looking good so far! We ended up going with an insulated rectangular firebox with half of a 120 gallon tank as the liner.
Dude why is that the hardest part?!? Lol glad you got it sorted. Mine came out nearly perfect after all, but it wasn’t void of MANY headaches 😂
Let’s go 🔥
🙌🏽🙌🏽
Cool build what’s the reason you haven’t invested on a plasma cutter n a air compressor???
Thanks for the support brother! It was a real consideration nearly through the entire build. However, I never ended up pulling the trigger bc I knew that this would probably be the only project I’d work on that would warrant a plasma cutter probably within the next 5 years. Also I wasn’t fond of the learning curve given I was under a huge time crunch to finish this project. Not sure if it was all the right train of thought but it worked out haha.
Great video man. Just started my own diy 250 gallon build
Thanks for the support my friend! You’re gonna love that bad boy once it’s done
Just throwing this out there. That liner may be sewer pipe. If it is at all used I wouldn’t use it because burning it out may not fully get rid of the residual h2s
It was a new pipe when I bought it. Had a guy cut it off a MASSIVE piece of pipe. It’s just rolled steel with that film over it. But good call on the sewer pipe that would have been all bad! 😅
That’s a bad mamajamma! Nice video on your DIY offset.
Ohhh yea we’re she’s a baaaad girl!! Thanks for the support brother
what is your outer shell diameter ?
Shoot I can’t remember- I feel like 36” but not certain. Just the diameter of a normal 250 gallon tank.
@@MeatNGreetBBQ thanks for the response i got a 125 gallon propane tank for my firebox, outer shell is 30 in diameter so i think a 24 in diameter would fit enough to give me a gap for insulation its for a 500 gallon smoker
You usually see that green pipe on direct burial pipe. Great video my man!
Oh rock on- glad that sentence didn’t end with like “and they’re highly toxic” 😂 thanks for the support bro
@@MeatNGreetBBQ 🤣🤣🤣
Underground storm grain pipe.
There we go thanks did the wisdom my friend 👍
See this pipe all over the pipeline industry, oil & gas.
You should’ve packed insulation in that gap all the way around your firebox with the high heat insulation then you would’ve had a solid fire box even better but good job bro
Thanks for the comment and sub bro. Means a lot! I specifically wanted a semi-insulated firebox. Insulation coming from the air gap. In my experience fully insulated runs just a little too efficient for the way I build my fires so I opted against fully insulating it.
