    This is possibly THE most professionally produced 'lesson' I've seen on TH-cam.
    Excellent in all views.

      Carl can do it all - from Van Halen to John Denver.... he’s polished, meticulous, knowledgeable,...the lessons are always clear and spot on note for note and he’s a super nice guy to boot. In other words he’s PERFECT. There are tons of instructional videos on the internet, but none are as good as this. Cheers, Carl!

    I've been working away at this lesson for a week or so now, and I'm so happy I did. Such a lovely song. And an excellent lesson from a brilliant tutor. Thank you!

    Yes, John did play it in drop-d because he loved that deep sound on the d chords. As for picks, he used fingerpicks in the 70s and gradually shifted to a thumb pick and fingernails. This was an excellent video. Thanks!

    Thank you for this lesson. John usually played it on his Guild F612 XL Custom. The thing on a 12-string guitar is that the strings of the lower four courses are tuned in octaves, with those of the upper two courses tuned in unisons.
    This explains how John could play in 'normal' D position but sound as if there was a second player doing the higher notes.
    John uses this effect in an ingenious manner at the end of his intro to Rhymes and Reasons (again, playing a D chord in normal position but sounding higher).

    Carl you've been a big help to me! I study a little theory, then learn to play one of your songs (so it makes better sense). Been playing 2.5 years now and have my own girl's jam session group!

    I play many of JD songs. I play this using a 12 string. Much more chime. I use play a Taylor KOA. I have over 300 of his songs in his finger style. I had the privilege of meeting some of JDs band members and acquired his music. Sorry I can't share this with anyone as it is copyrighted. Loved the memorial in CO. He is surely missed.

    Instead of having the index finger handle both G and B strings you could assign index (I) to G string, middle (M) to B string and ring (A) to high E string. Thumb (P) still plays low E, A, or D depending on the chord. Picking pattern is then PIAMAI and only the thumb has to move.

    Ok. That tears it! I'm starting to learn Panama by Van Halen from this guy's other lesson and he's also teaching Annie's Song?! Two completely different styles from opposite ends of the spectrum. Great job!

  • @thebrushhawg
    @thebrushhawg 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wow. Ive never tried to play finger-style so thought this would be a great way to start. Im stubborn so ill stick with it. Lol. So, after playing until my fingers short circuited i used this as a picking exercise. Hard to get that swing that comes natural from your fingers. Very Good lesson.

    May I ask if there is a specific reason why you don't use the ring finger as well? It seems a bit complicated to alternate strings with the index finger.

    • @berylmgage09
      @berylmgage09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I was thinking, as I am learning it with my ring finger included. I'm thinking maybe it's because a lot of fingerpickers, (especially beginner fingerpickers) don't really use their ring finger.

  • @thomasread3118

    Steve Wiesburg would play that intro as you play it and John would play at the standard D position with a drop D. His finger picking style keeps his thumb in constant motion which produces that sound on the 12 string the same as your intro. For years I could not understand why I couldn't duplicate the sound. It sounds the same even if he plays it alone but only on the 12 string and it's his thumb moving 123 123 123 123. The downward movement of the thumb gives you that sound if that makes sense.

    Hi can the picking pattern also use the ring finger on the high E ? So
    P - bass
    I - G
    A (ring) - E
    M - B
    A - E
    I - G
    ? Or is this just making it harder for no reason?
