That 50mm f1.2 Art is a perfect example of why Canon and Nikon currently don’t allow Sigma to release their FF lenses on their mirrorless platforms. Smaller, lighter , much cheaper but just as good.

    Matt, all due respect, but:
    1. The number of aperture blades doesn’t affect shooting wide open, nor does it affect the cat’s eye effect.
    2. The cat’s eye test is misleading. In the photo shot with Sigma you placed the bokeh balls in the middle of the frame, where cat’s eye effect is usually not pronounced. All other shots have them in the upper part of the frame where we usually do see cat’s eye effect. I’m not sure if you did it on purpose, hopefully not.
Sometimes I don’t understand why camera reviewers with several years of experience make such simple mistakes. It’s not okay.

    • @j.waardenburg8178
      @j.waardenburg8178 หลายเดือนก่อน

I totally agree on your 1st remark and can add to it that the cats-eye effect when shooting wide open (so no matter the amount of blades, the aperture will be perfectly circular since they're fully retracted) is mostly caused by the diameter of the front element. It's because the circular shape of the ball (that is formed by the aperture) is cut off by the circular shape of the edge of the front element (not to be confuse by the filter tread, since this is not always @ the edge of the glass). That's why the cats-eye effect is more pronounced @ the edge of the frame. The effect on the shape of the bokeh-ball can actually be demonstrated by taking pictures trough a piece of aluminum foil or black paper with a shape cut into it (for instance a heart). This was a popular trick a while ago and transformed the bokehballs into (heart)shapes.

    Love it!!
Like others said though , if Nikon could make a more comparct design it would go a long way!!
It's so heavy in fact I always compare other lenses to it , to understand how heavy the future lense would be.
Even the 135 Plean feels light compared to this , still it's a fantastic .
Of course I won't be mad if Sigma bring that 50 1.2 to Nikon

I seem to remember that a 50mm prime was more money the faster it got. I have Nikon's in 1.8, 1.4 and not sure for that cost I would get the 1.2. The 1.4 was about 3 times the cost of the 1.8. The fact I did not hear you spouting some new revolutionary coating or image stabilization in lens, cemented that in my mind.

  • @BlackSeries_

I think considering the extreme increase in lens performance, the price is acceptable. Especially if you consider the manufacturing processes which are needed, to achieve such results. You can still get nifty fifties today for comparable prices as back then (only not from first party manufacturers). But these lenses are extremely high performing and therefore the price is okay. You just need to decide if that performance is needed for you.

Interesting that the A9 with its lower megapixel holds up well against the other camera bodies. Regarding the lenses, is it true that the aperture blades are completely out of the way when wide open? If so I’d think the blade count/shape is not a factor when comparing bokeh balls wide open. Anyway like the sigma for its size weight and price. Another great video, Matt, I always look forward to your videos.

I shoot Nikon and have always loved fast lenses, I still have my AIS 50mm 1.2 for a certain look. But I agree, the prices for the Nikon and Canon 1.2's are just crazy. I bought the 50 and 85 mm f1.8 S lenses slightly used for a fair price when I first went mirrorless and they are fantastic and probably the right price. I've shot with the 1.2's and yes they have a certain look but to be honest they are not worth it to me. The 85mm 1.8 in particular is amazing in design, not being super sharp between 1.8 2.2 with good falloff to the edges, perfect for portraits but by 2.8 and up super sharp indeed if you need more DOF in focus. I love that lens. The 50mm f 1.8 is also super sharp and just a workhorse... I'd like to try the Sigma if they made a native Z lens. Also the Nikon Z natives seem to have less FB so great for video. Thanks for uploading Matt, interesting comparison.

As a Nikon Z9 user, like yourself, I am biased perhaps and see that in low-light conditions, the Nikkor looks much the best of the bunch. But I am biased. I am not going to go out and buy an expensive Canon simply to try out a 50 1.2! Not when the Nikkor looks that good, especially in the natural low-light situations you show. It's good that you do these comparison video's but I would imagine that Sony users and Canon users feel exactly the same way (except they might feel a few envious feelings about the Nikkor glass). One take-away from the video is perhaps spacing the lens out to give more space to the elements seems to be beneficial for the Nikon lens, and having less aperture blades seems to lead to what I feel is more pleasant (not sure how you spell) bouket? I have a Nikkor 50 1.4 D that I use on a Nikon D810, I am quite happy with what that gives me. I don't often use it at 1.4, but in aperture priority mode, on a reasonably sunny day, it is suggesting 1/5000th at 64 ISO.... Sorry, got sidetracked there, good video, very pretty model, good work.

As a Sony shooter, I can definitely tell you that I've got absolutely zero envy. On the contrary, the superiority of the Sony glass compared to both Nikon and Canon is one major benefit of the system. We get smaller lenses with much better af motors that produce the same image quality. The 50s in this video are the best example of that. As a Sony shooter, I get access to both, the best lens (which is the GM) and the cheapest lens (the sigma) while you're stuck with the worst (heaviest, biggest, slowest focusing) of the bunch with no alternatives available to you...

The variables of sensors and processing make "renditions" hard to compare. We are not likely to change brands over one lens. I have the Sony and I appreciate that it is already big enough, and the size of the Nikon is tending to the bizarre. I feel you, the 50 1.2 lives on my a7rv, but the 35 is just a flawless perfect lens. A little pushing it for the type of portraits I do, I prefer the 70-200ii for focal length, the 50 just always feels spot on thought. It never lacks
Im also on the gfx, the 120, 110 and 80 are incredible. Its weird though wider focal lengths just feel off to me on mf because of the aspect ratio, so I usually always use FF for wider portrait shots

Ridiculous prices and the Nikon one should have some other advantages to make up for it´s size. I´m waiting for a chinese, cheaper version or a Sigmron Nikon Z-version, and until then my old Takumar 50/1,4 with radioactive yellow lenses is my absolute favorite😀

Look at the picture on 11:50 and pause it. That shot looks artistic straight out of a magazine or a movie clip. It has a natural look about and it’s neutral. The skin tones are amazing while the other lens lean towards the orange yellow but hey if you like that kinds of cartoon look just use A.I. 😂 jk but for true to life photos sooc I would most definitely go with the canon. Imo 👍🏽

There are always compromises when making optics. The problem is that Nikon knows that most people won't pay the price for perfection. And the sigma lens is virtually the same, for many eyes.
Definitely the 1.2 race was doomed since the beginning. I think the new 35mm 1.4 (Nikon) will finally start a new era of common sense.

The sigma is unmatched for value. Observation, there’s less cats eye going towards center of the frame. The art image had lights more towards center of the frame vs the others. So the framing made the sigma bokeh look more circular. Canon seemed to perform worse across all images for that characteristic. Nikon best. The build quality and lousy af motors of the canon is why I no longer own it.
There’s a lot of comments about size. The reason is directly due to design goals. Nikon prioritized eliminating/reducing focus breathing, vignette and distortion. The Sony and Sigma are smaller but both have more vignetting, weird type of distortion, and more focus breathing. Nikon decided to correct those things by design. Sony/Sigma decided to correct it by software. The canon focus breathing is significant and it’s more like a 1.4 lens for how much light is let in. Obviously the Nikon cons are weight and size.
