This is classic Whit Stillman. You think you're watching a movie about Disco and all of a sudden you're hip-deep in philosophical and societal values.

    • @Fernandez218

hip-deep in philosophical analysis of the societal values of dogs in a kids cartoon movie. Of course we all know that they're just using the cartoon movie analysis as a way of wooing each other and showing off their egos.

It’s a satirical view of how stupid an Ivy League education makes you. I know because I had that education too. It’s hysterically funny because they take themselves so effing seriously.

The script is bullet proof. What makes this movie work is that the characters are actually speaking their lines as if they were prose from a novel. People don’t actually talk like this. If you keep this perspective in mind, then the characters disappear and become total satire. Besides, when the spoken word is conveyed as if it were the written word, it just allows the dry humor to skyrocket into the next realm. ❤

The exchanges of eye contact and slight but unmistakable facial reactions between Josh and Alice in this scene is some of the sexiest low-key flirting I can remember (0:28, 1:19, 1:36), capped off by that gorgeous hint of a smile followed by eyes cast downward at 2:18.
While Whit Stillman's writing is the more lauded half of his writer/director career, the intercutting in this scene (in collaboration with his editor) really shows off his skills behind the camera.

Everyone gets that Tramp is Des in Josh's formulation, but I think Lady is a synthesis of Charlotte and Alice. The part about Lady being great-looking but empty-headed is aimed at Charlotte. When he starts talking about nice girls from sheltered homes falling for the wrong type, he's warning Alice, whom he's in love with. Josh and Alice are the two nicest people in the movie.

  • @BrendanMacWade

I just saw this movie for the first time. It was a 20th anniversary screening and I sat right behind Mr. Stilman. He added Bambi and Lady references to this movie partly because his little daughter was watching Disney classics while he was writing the screenplay. But this scene has to strike a lot of people as a more clever reply to Tarantino's opening to Reservoir Dogs. One can humorously critique Like a Virgin. But Stilman runs circles around Lady and the Tramp.

Why was Des annoyed? It's what makes it so funny to me, he's a womanizer and he's attracted to Alice (Chloe) so he is either trying to prove to himself that he can change or prove to her that he can settle down. Of course he's fooling himself as he isn't faithful to any woman throughout the movie and has a silly cover story to get out of jams. He also knows that Josh is attracted to Alice so he's in competition with him though at this point in the movie neither has made a move.

I tend to relate with the garage trash and punk rock crowd, and they're just as opinionated as more privileged folks.
