A great, great and very funny film, and my favorite in Whit Stillman's "Doomed-Bourgeois-In-Love" trilogy.

Definitely his best film, and one of the best of the 90s. So under appreciated!

One of the most underrated movies of all time. I love Chris Eigeman. He should have been a bigger star in his prime.

I always liked Metropolitan the most, but I forgot how many good bits were in Barcelona, too. Fun composite. Their 2 characters are similar than in Metropolitan, this time they are more stuck with each other being cousins adrift overseas.

In 1898, The United States went to war with Spain. As a result, the US gained control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines, the last remaining Spanish colonies. The shock was so brutal in Spain, that it gave rise to a movement (the 98 Generation) of writers who saw very critically the way Sapin was being governed. The Spanish Empire was in full decadence of course, but there was no conscience on the backwardness and irrelevance Spain had fallen into. This was similar to the shock the British received during the Suez Crisis in 1956. The self criticism and resentment towards the US is part of the theme of this film, and explains the contempt some spanierds had for the Americans.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know that we got all of those colonies from Spain all at once. This is fascinating. One thing I find interesting is how these countries that “become irrelevant” almost always fair far better than the countries that are still considered “world leaders.” It’s not doing most of in the US any good to have so many billionaires. The wealth divide gets worse and worse, and everyone in the world hates us as if we all have this money. We don’t. Plus we don’t have healthcare and retirement. I admire Spain and France and all of these countries that take care of their people and that resent us Americans for our so called power.

Taylor Nicholls and Christian Bale should play brothers in a film.

When I was 21 in the 90s I saw this director and his films as an upper middle class savant.
As a 48 year old I realize how vapid his films were. (And not vapid like my own Mis-spent youth) but truly dumb and void or reason nor awareness off class differences and especially devoid of reality.

You’re one of the few who become less wise as you age, congrats.

I mean they are only vapid because he’s basically a disaffected shit lib himself and he’s scared of touching on race or ethnicity. But somehow you are an even bigger dork.
