      @@deepwubbinz7919 hard to say for sure but Roger stuck to his guns long into the 2000s on TV and later through his writings after he could no longer talk. If anything these guys are BOTH a living lesson in sticking to your guns regardless of popular opinions.

    It breaks my heart hearing Gene Siskel seeming to be doing so well recovering, going into or coming out from brain surgery...But, of course, he did not recover. I cry for the way he & Roger Ebert both left us so painfully. Both are missed. There have never been two better, more honest, more cantankerous movie loving critics. I'm glad to have seen them for years. And...Thank you, Aldolpho, for uploading them. TgT

  • @darkl3ad3r
    @darkl3ad3r 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Appreciate the upload. It's really morbid seeing this setup with Gene having to call in and comment on his appearance due to his illness. Very sad, and you can't help but feel got Roger sitting there alone carrying the torch.
    That said it's crazy seeing these movie commercials from the late 90s and how they look like they're from 20 years before they came out relative to today. We're all getting older and boy does it stink.
    Rest in peace to both of these gentlemen. Thanks for all the entertaining reviews, legends the both of you and have a place in history.

    • @NealX_Gaming
      @NealX_Gaming 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How is it morbid?? It's anything but! It's life-affirming that despite being sick he still wants to work and they're letting him work. Like Ebert would say later, "he came to play."

    I love the Truman Show. It was such a fresh, original and inovative movie, with Jim Carey showing he can do a movie that doesn't include him acting the fool, and do it well.

I loved them at the time, and I believe re-watching their discourse now helps me to be a better thinker and evaluator of art in the present.

      it seems pretty clear, too, that gene was probably not in a good frame of mind to be reviewing films because i think he would've been easier on these had it not been for the life-threatening stuff he was dealing with. he did at least recognize the brilliance of "the truman show".

    It's funny, there are only two movie "reviews" that have made me cry. Yes.. reviews. Both by Gene Siskel on this show. The first is "Ed Wood" I have never seen him so passionate about his love for a movie. And then this one.. Truman Show.. knowing that he hated Carrey's first film but watched him grow as a performer, to him being in the hospital and that (we know) he won't recover and he is talking about this movie as being the reason he originally became a film critic

    The Truman Show was a well made film & Jim Carrey should've earned an Oscar nomination. I agreed with Ebert A Perfect Murder was good 👍 cuz of the suspense & the ending was lazy.

    • @slyjokerg
      @slyjokerg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not only was the ending lazy, but there were some "Wtf?" issues with the story. Why exactly is it that Emily is in trouble in some way that would make her not want to call the police? When she got the tape and new the truth, why the fuck would she stay in the apartment and confront him? That was pretty ridiculous. She was a scared, trembling victim earlier, and then she suddenly became a bold, wise ass who was confronting the man who hired someone to kill her? She would have used her ruse of going out to get food to go to the cops. And... the would be killer had a naked key in his pocket??? No other keys... not on a key ring... just a single, loose key in his pocket. Bullshit. NO ONE does that. And it is absurd that Steven would have "David" COME TO THE FUCKING APARTMENT before the murder. There is NO WAY he would have done that, and there is NO WAY David would have been so stupid as to oblige. It created countless ways to connect the two of them. I could go on. HOWEVER... I have a thing for movies like this, and I still recommend it. It is well acted, and the mood/feel/look of it is excellent. The basic plot is smart and intriguing. All three of the main characters are shit, as "David" is a career criminal/con man (although it is clear he actually did develop true feelings for Emily, Steven is a money grubbing control freak, and Emily is a cheating whore who didn't have the integrity and guts to leave her husband BEFORE fucking someone else. I actually like that. The movie might want you to sympathize with Emily, but she deserved what she got, in a figurative sense. There were no heroes/good guys. That's okay. The murder plot itself was feasible, and fairly clever, and the actual plot being played out in the kitchen worked. The "4th party" intruder/killer was a believable surprise, and David feeling pain and regret over the whole thing, when he thought Emily was dead... very well done. As was touched on, Michael Douglas is the master of this kind of role/movie.
      There were some stupid errors, but the good outweighed the bad. 7.0/10
      The Truman Show was ahead of it's time. Very good. 8.5

  • @nongthip

    The Truman Show was from 1998, which included some other great movies such as...
    The Big Lebowski, Saving Private Ryan, There's Something About Mary
    And a few other bad ones I won't mention cos IMO they may have been successful, but kinda sucked.
    The Truman Show is a standout for several reasons, including its director Peter Weir who has made some amazing movies (Master and Commander, Witness, Dead Poets Society, The Mosquito Coast, The Year of Living Dangerously, Gallipoli, etc.)
    The other thing about The Truman Show is how relevant it continues today. Social media and internet spying are now more invasive than ever. I have this slightly imaginary sense that I'm still watched by some camera in the sky. For example several times when I go to restaurants and get horrible service, it's as if someone is directing it "Okay team here he comes, let's fuck it up".
    I prefer to cook and serve at home (paranoid much?) ;-)

    Siskels criticism of Last Days of Disco is very legitimate. All of Stillmans movies are extremely anachronistic and create settings that never really existed. When it’s something vague like “Debutante Culture” or “Spanish American Cold War relations” it’s easy to look past because I don’t know anything about it. But I know about the Manhattan early 80s disco scene and that is NOT what last days of disco is about. If that intro scene misleads you into thinking you’re gonna watch a movie about that, you’ll be frustrated. It’s a great movie and it’s got Stillman letting the ladies take the lead in Dialogue

    a pretty amazing episode, in the sense that i hardly like any films but i like 3 of the 5 films offered that week (and have not seen the other 2). Of the two I have not seen, my guess is that i'd most likely think that THE TRUMAN SHOW was pretty good and that HOPE FLOATS was a little schmaltzy and a bit vapid. THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO is wonderful, as is THE OPPOSITE OF SEX. A PERFECT MURDER is really pretty good-- everyone is more than a little slimy (duplicitous and wholly self-serving), despite their near perfect physical appearance and perfectly appointed living spaces. I remeber seeing THE OPPOSITE OF SEX in the theatre and thinking it was smartly funny. 10 years later, it seemed less impressive (largely bc the tv show "Frasier" covered a lot of the same territory (style-wise and humor-wise).

    Siskel on Last Days of Disco makes me want to puke. Missing the point of this film so severely and thus being unable to enjoy how effortlessly hilarious it is makes me believe he is likely a person this film could see to satirize.

      I agree that Siskel blew that one. That the disco era is this group's musical/cultural "time" is just a quirk of fate. It's the milieu, not the subject. And they're not overtly passionate because that's not Stillman's thing, and not everyone has to write young people that way.

    • @ricardocantoral7672

      @@slyjokerg Yes, it dreadful and from the very beginning. Look how quickly Hitch's film establishes the relationship of all the players involved without a SINGLE WORD of dialogue. Also, take note of the out of type casting of Ray Milland as the bitter husband and how brilliantly fits into the dense psychological profile of Hitch's villains. Now look at the new turd that slogs along to establish the same story and then gives the characters absolutely nothing to do half way through the film. Why eliminate the twist of the potential victim becoming a suspect of murder ? Above all, you had David "Poirot" Suchet as the detective investigating the murder and what does he do ? Nothing. Fuck this mess.

    • @slyjokerg
      @slyjokerg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ricardocantoral7672 1. It was pretty damn good at the beginning. Most of the issues come toward/at the end.
      2. This isn't a contest. This movie's quality stands on it's own. You are shitting on it because you think Dial M for Murder was better. Movie A being better than Movie B, even if your comparison was stipulated as apt, doesn't mean that Movie B isn't good, let alone does it not mean that it was dreadful.
      3. This movie didn't slog around at all. It cut to the point pretty quickly/directly.
      4. At what point did the characters in this film have nothing to do? What the hell are you talking about?
      5. You continue to criticize this movie for not being the original on which this one was loosely based. This isn't the same movie, isn't supposed to be the same movie, isn't trying to be the same movie.... stop criticizing it for not being the same movie. Clearly you are someone who has a hard time walking and chewing gum at the same time. For practical purposes, your entire criticism of this film is based on it not being the original and not having the exact same plot and elements of the first. That isn't how a movie is supposed to be judged.

      1. Sure, it's good if you want all the information delivered in a blunt, unremarkable manner.
      2. When you remake a film, you invite the comparison. A Perfect Murder is a dumb version of a far better constructed scenario.
      3. Watch both films next time and tell me which one gets to the point faster and on top of that, notice which one does a better job at subverting one's expectations.
      4. Do you remember either film ? In the Hitchcock film, Grace Kelly foils the attempted murder and she winds up being accused of murdering Swan in order to put an end to the phony blackmail. In this remake, the intended victim and the other parties involved basically do nothing until the everything turns to shit for Douglas. Even the investigator of the case does nothing.
      5. This is not loosely based on Dial M. This the same FUCKIN' STORY. Husband attempts to kill treacherous wife by hiring someone else to do the dirty work in order to get said woman's money. This is a regurgitation of a far better constructed film updated for a dumb as shit 90's audience who wanted a trashy thriller.

      @@ricardocantoral7672 ---> POSTED: **1. Sure, it's good if you want all the information delivered in a blunt, unremarkable manner.**
      I reject your characterization.
      ---------------------
      **2. When you remake a film, you invite the comparison.**
      Perhaps, but even having the thought in your head while making the picture doesn't mean that the movie has to follow precisely in the footsteps of the original. In fact, in many cases, that makes a remake pointless. It has absolutely no bearing on the quality of the remake.
      **A Perfect Murder is a dumb version of a far better constructed scenario.**
      Your opinion is noted.
      ----------------------
      **3. Watch both films next time and tell me which one gets to the point faster and on top of that, notice which one does a better job at subverting one's expectations.**
      You seem to think that if Movie X is good, great, or whatever, then, if Movie X's remake isn't as good, that means that the remake is bad. Again, a remake doesn't have to be as good as the original in order to be good. I never contended that A Perfect Murder is better, or even as good as, Dial M for Murder. You are arguing with me as if I did.
      ----------------------------
      **4. Do you remember either film?**
      LOL. Of course I do. Otherwise, I wouldn't be discussing this in the manner that I am, although a person wouldn't need to have seen the original in order to critique the remake.
      **In the Hitchcock film, Grace Kelly foils the attempted murder and she winds up being accused of murdering Swan in order to put an end to the phony blackmail. In this remake, the intended victim and the other parties involved basically do nothing until the everything turns to shit for Douglas. Even the investigator of the case does nothing.**
      Again, you are operating under the premise that the remake has to be the same as the original. It doesn't. Hell, it isn't even the same title. It could be said that it isn't even a remake. As I noted before, it was loosely based on the original. It wasn't trying to be the same as the original. You are continuing to attack it for not BEING the original. That isn't how movie criticism works. Each movie is judged on it's own merit.
      **5. This is not loosely based on Dial M. This the same FUCKIN' STORY.**
      It is the same basic story, but not the same movie. It is comical how you are arguing out of both sides of your mouth. You are attacking it for not being the same as the original, but are also claiming that it is the "same fuckin' story." LOL.
      **Husband attempts to kill treacherous wife by hiring someone else to do the dirty work in order to get said woman's money.**
      Yep. It's the same basic plot. However, as YOU have noted, how it plays out isn't the same. As I said, it isn't trying to play out the same. It isn't the same movie, or trying to be the same movie. Again, remaking a movie in the exact same form as the original is fairly pointless.
      **This is a regurgitation of a far better constructed film updated for a dumb as shit 90's audience who wanted a trashy thriller.**
      Again, you are arguing both ways. You simply want to attack, attack, attack. Which is it? Is it shitty because it is different, or is it shitty because it is a regurgitation? You are contradicting yourself, and it reveals a severe bias.

    I just re-watched, The Truman Show yesterday after having not watched it in over twenty years and I have to say I was as underwhelmed by it now as I was then. It's not a bad movie but I found the whole concept too far fetched for me to allow for my suspension of disbelief, and some of the delivery in the performances at times were heavy handed. Jim Carrey was acceptable as Truman but his performance was just that, merely acceptable. It did however to be somewhat prophetic though, and given the culture of reality TV that exists today the movie now strikes me as rather ironic.
