    Will that be cool for m11 have the film advance thump rest, open = turn on the camera, close = turn off.
    So, M11 won’t need the thump rest form the M240 and now M10, don’t really like that design!

    It’s hard not to think that Leica is pricing themselves out of a huge number of profitable sales. I’m pretty much ground zero (I would think) for a potential Leica M10 customer. I love candid photography and I often travel internationally just to take pictures. I’ve owned a number of film Leica M cameras, and I have a small collection of M-mount glass. I’m in my 40s and I have a good job with plenty of disposable income and money in the bank.
    I’m sure that I would LOVE shooting with the Leica M10-D, and I could pretty easily afford one without breaking the bank. But here’s the thing: I don’t like to be price gouged. I mean, hell, half the reason I’m in good financial shape is that I don’t spend frivolously on overpriced consumer goods.
    In 1986 the then state-of-the-art Leica M6 sold for $1,695. That was a lot of money back then. In today’s dollars, it would be about $3,900. If the M10 were a $5,000 camera, I would say to myself: “Okay, that’s roughly what a Leica digital M should cost in 2019.” And I would order one tomorrow. But $8,000? No way. Leica makes great cameras, but I’m not paying a 60% markup for that Leica logo engraving.
    On the whole, I guess I shouldn’t expect anything different. Leica’s pricing simply reflects our society’s massive wealth gap and drive for status among the well-off.

      Thank you for the thoughtful comment. The Leica M10 isn't a mass market consumer product. They are not made in China. Rather, each camera is hand-built in Germany with components made in Germany and at their fabrication plant in Portugal. The designs are in-house. The raw materials are premium. If you tour the factory in Wetzlar, you can see *why* these cameras and lenses cost what they do. The engineers and technicians are passionate about the brand and are truly dedicated to delivering excellence. It's an amazing corporate culture, similar to what you'd see at Porsche, for example.
      The M10-P is $700 more expensive than the standard M10. A niche product means less production. Which means the R&D and additional parts, labor, production line setup, etc. need to be amortized over a smaller number of units sold. Special, short-run products across many industries are almost always priced a bit higher than stock configurations. In this case, that premium ends up being a bit less than 10%.
      As far as getting an M10 for $5000 - easy. Just get a lightly used one. The depreciation is baked in and some of the cameras look like new. And once initially depreciated, they maintain this value for long time. Let's say you buy a used M10 for $5000, use it for a year or two, then sell it for $4500. Your monthly use cost is only $30-40. Try doing that with most consumer goods or cars.
      You can check out a selection of used M cameras here: leicastoremiami.com/collections/used-m-cameras

      Leica cameras cost every dollar they sell for. They’re hand built by professionals that actually make a salary, the amount of hours and dedication spent into each camera is what gives it its price point, not an artificial markup strategy. I can’t stand people against luxury items. If you don’t want to spend the money, go and buy a Sony, no big deal, you don’t need to complain about its price. It’s like watching a rolls Royce ad and complaining that Toyota Corollas are great cars for a fraction of the price. It’s just ridiculous.

    • @CrueLoaf
      @CrueLoaf 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rather than the company 'gouging' you, Leica cameras are quality. If you have the money, owning a camera which you know takes great shots, is well built and makes the shooting experience such a joy (remember fun?), is good enough reason for me. Oh...and they hold their price too.

    It's funny: I thought that a digital camera without a screen, even a Leica M, would be silly and impractical. But using my M7 for a while, it occurs to me that with practice, you don't really need to see what you've shot right away. And if you really need some kind of live view or immediate feedback, there's the Visoflex. Being able to control all menu functions with your phone means that you dont miss any of the features of a digital camera. I deeply enjoy the feeling of my M7, so perhaps the M10 D could work for me.

    You wanna learn how to really shoot an M? Like I mean REALLY, like dude,you gotta know your shit! Period. I don’t own one yet, but this is along the lines of what Peter Karbe tried to encourage in all of us whose soul and joy will always be in finding our own photographic story. No more no less. Like his comparison to learning to write patiently and well - perhaps not easily or quickly - with a fountain pen. Much like any classic M Leica. This one will reward you for your patience, thoughtfulness, and acquired skills that work integrally with your photography. Only as good as your honesty to your work. Only you, and no one else, at the end of story that is yours only. I’d love to pair this to my 75mm Noct. and have at it for a while. It might help me separate me more from my ego, and not need a crutch for a look at each shot. It will force you to “ feel” your work until that is not uncomfortable - and makes you at peace, in that it is the only way you learn what you think you knew... when you can do that truthfully, you grew up just a bit...

      The M10-D is a niche product with very low production volume. As such, it demands a bit of a price premium in order to cover R&D and tooling costs. But, the camera is also quite unique in what it offers the user - namely a 'pure' analog shooting experience with all the image quality benefits of digital. I personally know very happy users of the M10-D. For them, it was exactly what they wanted. It may not be for you, or for most photographers for that matter, but the fact that Leica actually made such a unique option available to those that do want it - is pretty cool.
