    I started with a M6, sold for a M8, sold for a M240 and again for the mighty M10-D. With every digital camera I missed the feeling of the M6, but not the hustle of film development. The M10-D has the potential to be the camera to stand the time. I combined with the Leica Summilux 50 black chromed. A dream combo 🥰

      Hi,
      I got two little kids now, so my photography went from travel/hiking/city to jumping kids which is not quite easy to manually focus on at 1.4.
      But if you hit that focus it's magical to capture the moment.
      So, I still think the M10-D is the pinnacle of M cameras with no distractions and I would always get one again.
      The feeling of an analog M and the advantages of a digital workflow are on point.
      How about you?

      @@ronaldpiecek3535 oh nice! A Q would make a killer pair with what you already have and for your purposes too.
      I have a MP. I’ve had a M10 monochrom in the past, but decided to just shoot black and white film and sold it. I’m kind of thinking about grabbing a M10-D or P, but I don’t know if it would be a waste… it’s just hard to not choose the MP over anything else

    The problem I have with this approach is that at the price point of that camera, it would be cheaper to just shoot film. This is a digital camera really trying to go for the film experience, even having a fake film advance. It's something that's not really Leica I feel, Leica is something precise and carefully engineered with no fluff. Then again, everyone has a different opinion and there are people who really appreciate the digital files with a more analogue body. You summarized it really well at 8:45, it's a camera with a really specific purpose and some will love it.

    You are spot on in regards to looking at the LCD, I have the MD 262 (Previous model to the M10D) and I just shoot and not worry but if I am shooting my M264 Monochrom that has the LCD screen I am always tempted to check. So I think the ultimate will be a Leica Monochrom with no LCD screen.

  • @UKBROOKLYN
    @UKBROOKLYN 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I have lusted after one of these D cameras for a while... To me it simplifies everything and forces one to compose on the spot and not be always checking. I am old enough to have learned and taught film photography and found carrying a main frame computer around killed my ability to see. So what to do... can not afford an M10 but hey I bought a used M9 with a replaced sensor.. The dis/advantage of an M9 is that the screen sucks. Fantastic.. Setup with DNG and JPG to display B&W. If I want to check focus or comp later in a coffee shop I can press the Play button and see a tiny low res rep of what I took. Theres no way to chimp with an M9 so that shuts you down. Plus the speed is slow. Like re cocking a film camera. Only down is the super loud shutter... But thats old school too.. I import my images in LR uncheck all the JPGS as I only have them for that coffee break. Then Select all and creat virtual copies to which I apply Adobe Monochrome preset as a starting point. And oh boy thoe M9 DNG files.. Yummy... So to sum up.. Very jealous Grrrr.. but have found a less expensive way to experience the photo process with great results... Great video.. keep it going...

    I'd love one of these...also I know people make fun of the fake advance lever, but honestly, I like that idea. That's one thing I miss about shooting digital. With film cameras I hook my thumb behind the lever and it feels way more secure. This is with my film Nikons as well as my film Leicas. When i'm using the X-Pro2 or X100 it feels too "loose". It would be cool if it was functional and would reset the shutter though.

Joking aside, the beautiful camera certainly brings the photographer closer to the true essence of photography, setting the parameters, composing and shooting. @Chris Chu, as a previous owner of an X-Pro3, I can say that it’s riddled with electronic problems. That rear LCD is known for having the cable detach partially from the Motherboard on the camera (I thought I was the only one with an F’d up screen) and the shutter button sometimes gets “sticky”. It’s honestly pretty sad because I absolutely love the design aesthetic of the camera, the titanium body, etc, but they put low grade components in it and so it certainly is no M10-D. It was so bad, after the second time I sent my camera in under warranty, Fuji just sent me a brand new Pro3 in the box. Couldn’t look at it the same after that and sold it to fund a Leica MP (film).

    I know this camera is suppose to replicate the feeling of shooting film. If anything, I believe the Monochrome series is the closest thing to accomplish that. In the beginning of analog photography, black and white film was the only thing avaliable. The black and white workflow will force you to think differently and even the sensor is designed from the ground up for it instead of just slapping on a filter through a digital camera/lightroom.

    • @whoschrischu

    Find this all a bit funny. I shoot an M Type 262 with screen on back. I just turn it off and never bother to look at it. What I like about having the screen is the ease of dealing with the menu, doing upgrades to firmware, and did I mention dealing with the menu? I'd much rather have the screen and not use it most of the time than to not have it. Also there are times when I only want to shoot jpegs, can't do that with any of the D models. Then again, to each their own. Enjoy.

    Boy did not realize this was coming out and bought the M10-P, 2 weeks before :-( Was an ebay purchase, so no return from the seller, plus I preferred a silver body to a black one so my thoughts faded from the M10-D but If I could go back, I would get this over my silver M10-P. In 2018, on ebay, a seller had these new for $6K, it was a legit grey market seller. That price was pretty tempting.......Fast forward 2019, I got myself a lightly used M edition 60 kit for the lens alone and am very happy with the camera. So at least I have an M-D body that I can use when i want to. I wish Leica would release an M-D version in the future. The M10-D feels great in the hands with the thumb rest/fake advance lever but wish the ISO dial was at the rear then onto and the EV be ontop. I know Leica knows this but I think it would have been too costly for them to reinvent one. In the future I hope Leica does one proper. Now Leica prices have gone quite high, have to think many times before buying anything Leica now, especially if I am chucking out a few grand!...........Great vid and love your guys style. very nice! Love the vintage style camera straps, really goes well with the rangefinders!

    This is more of a trend with camera manufacturers now.
    Since film is really becoming popular again they are attempting to capture that market.
    However... Film simulations and removing features from cameras is not the way to go.
    Would a screen break in 10-20 years? Yes. But the point of electronics is to not use the same thing for 10-20 years.

    • @whoschrischu
      @whoschrischu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This camera came out in 2018, and they made a similar design model for a camera that came earlier than that. Leica is pretty focused on making their products minimalist and this is probably the biggest thing that any camera company can do. Nikon made the Df like back in 2013 to emulate the film cameras they used to sell, and that was before the film hype. Same with Fujifilm

      Like you said +- 2000 made. I get the idea of not looking at your photos for every picture with film. I love my Mamiya C330,
      However when you need to get the shot either for you or a client, the advantages of digital and previewing on site is incomparable.
      Forcing people into a "habit" change does not make them better photographers. Neither does looking at the screen, but having the option vs not having it in a world where its standard is an extreme disadvantage. The "take less, not more" philosophy can be accomplished without crippling a feature in the long run is what I am saying.
      Either way its a great camera, but the reasons for removing the screen are weak.
      "This is how it was on the M6 30 years ago so it should be like this now" nah.

      @@ReclusiveEagle tbh Leica is way overrated. Leicas back in the 1930s was all about quality, technology, etc, the same with Zeiss and Voigtländer. The problem with those 3 brands is that after the war they didn't changed their models, technology, and types of camera they made. If you check zeiss they stick to making bellow cameras, Leica stick to RF, voigtlander stick to bellow+ rangefinder. All 3 cameras were early doomed after the war and had to increase the price of their cameras to compensate the lower sales and it's way over documented. Zeiss and Voigtländer weren't able to survive the crisis, while Leica found their sweet spot with "rich" people who got them mostly because of the look and the name being considered a luxury back then.

    Even though I would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER spend that much money on a camera whose feature is the absence of features (I hope), I totally get the appeal. I try to get a similar experience with my A7C where I try and leave the flip screen closed. But doing street photography, nothing is as freeing as using my film SLR. I CAN’T tell whether I’m getting the exposure right, so there’s no point in worrying about it. That’s freedom right there.

    Hence why I don’t spend 8k on a leica camera.
    Fuji has s great dr400 mode where you shoot at iso 640 and the camera handles hilight retention. and exposure automatically

    I’m not hating, I’m not but your reasoning for it being distracting to use a digital camera. There’s this thing called raw so perfect exposure can be done in editing and your gonna editing your photos anyways so…

    i just got the leica M9 and the screen is so shitty in the back that i never want to look at the screen haha but i treat it like a film camera so it works out and same i dont want to waste 35mm film everyday on just snap shots so this will be my carry around from now on since it still works the exact same as any mechanical film leica while my M3 will be used for more intential stuff no more wasting film shots on street photography XD
