I'd prefer photos segmented by 36. After 36 exposures you set an iso and have to deal with it and whatever color settings you've picked for an additional 36 exposures. Then when you upload images they come in groups of 36.
The camera lacks all the new "useful trustful blah blah specs" like eyefocus, nipplefocus or whatever but your photos in this review are some of the best you've shot in your channel. Just a coincidence?

Far from non-functional, it's a thumb grip. I have an ugly aftermarket thing sticking out from my flash shoe for my Fujifilm, I'd love if something like this was built in instead. Could even work as an on/off switch like the Nikon F1.
I tried it in a Leica store. For me... it’s far better than the Thumbs Up. It is practical and functional in that sense. Aesthetically, looking like the advance lever helps it ‘fit in’ to the style of the camera. For me, it doesn’t matter if it has no function at this point. My M9-P has served me well. Now to either M10-P or M10-D.. that is the question.
There is one single damn good thing about this no screen version: when you are doing a job to shoot someone and she always comes to you to check the photos which is very annoying for photographers, now it is literally impossible with this camera. hahaha

$8,000 for a camera with no back panel screen and viewfinder that doesn't show you exactly what you are shooting at? I have an idea go on Ebay buy a vintage film camera for much less than $100 and use the rest of the $7,900 for tons of film rolls and developing. You can probably also get yourself a nice mirrorless full frame used near mint to boot and still have a good amount left over. Just saying... This camera is for private jet owners who have no idea what to spend their money on...
You'd need to be fucking stupid to spend $8,000 for such a camera, least of all a Leica. For less money than that, and for far better and more abundant features, I'd much rather get my hands on that new Fuji 50 megapixel medium format mirrorless camera.

I like the idea of not having a screen behind the camera. I guess it would sort of make one think more of the shot before pressing the shutter. But the fake film advance lever is a bit disappointing. They could have actually make it cock the shutter, thereby completing the "analog feel", and slowing one down even more before taking the next shot. As usual, another nicely done video.
I like the idea and concept of the '-d' models. It is about the user experience and not features. Actually i would love to have the film advance lever for recocking the shutter and storing the image. I don't know if it would generate enough energy to do so but it would liberate the mind even more. The most annoying thing in the digital age for me is to charge batteries for every single device (smartphone, digital cameras, smart watch,...).

Also the screenless feature is absolutely something I would go with. As it is, i keep the display on my 200D closed because i want to get back into the habit of actually figuring out the best exposure myself.

I dont know who in their right mind would spend $7995 for a fake analog camera when at that price you could get an actual analog camera (see: exquisite Leica Ms, Nikon Fs, Zeiss Ikons and Contaxes among many others) with a SHIT-TON of film (see: glorious, glorious Tri-X, HP5). Hell, for that money you could even get a Hasselblad Xpan!

It kinda feels like apple when they took away the headphone jack. Don't get me wrong, I love Leica. I got the chance to shoot with an M8 for some fashion photography a while ago and the photos were phenomenal. This camera however confuses me. It feels like a novelty item. The reason you could shoot film without super accurate meters was because it was so versatile. If you under or overexposed your photos, the film was very forgiving. Digital however can be a pain in the ass. Overexpose and you'll lose highlight detail, underexpose and you'll get noise. If you want the novelty of shooting without a screen, save yourself some money and buy an old film Leica body.
Admittedly, once I learned the cocking lever was not actually functional, I was thinking what is Leica thinking making a pure camera devoid of the superfluous and adding a seamingly useless non-functioning novelty gimmick to this new M10-D release? It would have been cool if the lever would have been actually functional like on the Epson RD-1 which cocks the shutter. But, I suppose you can simulate the cocking action if you really wanted to. Otherwise, I don't see the fold out thumb rest being as much use for actual photo taking as it is for an added grip or "hook" for your thumb when holding the camera downward at rest. it could help alleviate the need to exert as much force to grip the camera with thumb and fingers pressing against the camera body. So, I do take back my initial impressions about the cocking lever. It can have a semi-useful function. And, at least it can fold out of the way and not jab you in the chest, ribs or sides as most other accessory thumb grips often can and do. Enough bitching.. as many of us who see a new Leica product often can make a fuss over initially. On to the good stuff regarding the M10-D. I totally get the fun of shooting with this M10D is in great part to the mystery of not knowing if you nailed the shot of not. Additionally, what you see in through the viewfinder to compose is never going to be exactly the same as what you will get when using a true rangefinder. So, there's that surprise and intrigue to see if the image you made matches what you envisioned the shot would look like. It really is in most respects just like shooting a film camera.. the surprise, expectations and the disappointments. But, unlike film, you don't have to wait and go through as much trouble to process the film and put it to paper (or scanned) to see... although, I know a good many would argue that's also part of the experience and fun is actually developing the film and putting it to paper (or scanned) to be hands on to make and produce the final image all the way through. I don't have time for that these days, so I'm down with the "digital film processing' convenience the M10-D could alternatively provide. I would say adding the wifi connectivity to a smartphone app may have been too much tech for such a stipped down camera. BUT, I do appreciate the option to check, if I should desire to, and the instant ability to share, if I should also desire to. And, some angles you may actually want to use the smart phone as live view cause you just can't get down low, or tight or high enough with your body to get a very specific shot. Then again, you always have the option to still challenge yourself mentally and physically to try and make a difficult shot work. I'm sold.. take my money when I have it all!
I am hoping the M11-D have the actual advance lever just like the function of the Epson RD-1 and will save the battery for a much longer time and a more slimmer body close to the LEica M6 classic.
So they reused the body, reused the internals, removed the screen and added a pointless lever and you get all this for the exact same price? Now that is marketing done right! Must have a great overhead this camera =D
I think I could enjoy a city break and take some shots and be very very happy knowing I bagged quality images! My break would be awesome! Only when I get home would I realise my compositions and metering were a disappointment! :). When you think about it...you actually enjoy the shooting process without worrying about the results!
It's fun how you say you get used to not having a screen. I saw Jared polins review of the Leica and he kept trying to look at the back to see his pictures, and he also couldn't get used to the rangefinder focusing. I just found it a bit funny, personally I would probably also need some time to get used to the focusing since I've never used a rangefinder.
I think the M 10 D is a great idea. The fake winder makes it look just like my old MP. I’m sure I would be “winding” between digital shots, sort of like absentmindedly petting your dog. (Similar comforting feeling with no need to pick up poop.) Now, Leica should bring out a Monochrom D. Your Leica reviews over the years have always been informative and have always inspired me to get out and use my various M cameras and those great lenses. Thanks for this first look at Leica’s newest iteration.
Leica will deliver an external EVF. It is connected to the connection (below the base plate) with a cable. There will be a modified bottom plate for this purpose. At this connection you can also connect an external monitor (Casio). We will be able to buy this in the first quarter of 2019.

I totally agree it is way overpriced. Having said that, it's a nice product. They're not manufacturing 50,000 of them like Nikon, Canon, Fuji, so the development and production costs are higher per unit. Just like VWs are cheaper than Lamborghinis
I think Leica is doing the exact right thing. With a shift back to analog photography many photographers enjoy the easyness and the way of shooting analog. And for me personally I take a photo completely different whether i have a analog camera in front of my face or a digital. And that is, what I think Leica wants to achieve. To combine the way and the feeling of shoothin analog with the options providet by the digital way.
Just bought myself an Epson R-D1 which has an actual advance lever that does something. Been shooting film only for over 4 years now and the RD1 is the only digital camera I still considered buying. It's expensive for a 2004 camera but not as expensive as this M10D....
If you buy this camera, you're either 100% fully agree with the design (no screen/wifi /film winder that does nothing), which to me I would rather go for the m10 (which I have) or the m10p. I've got the M-D262 which sometimes I told myself I could be happier with a screen at the back as there were times which I just felt I could check on the files to see if I have exposed the pictures correctly.
Great video, as usual, Kai but you must miss Loc. I do. He’s been replaced by a rig.... Oh, and I love that camera and would have grabbed one if that winder cocked the shutter like the Epsom did. What a shame...

Not sure what I'm more shocked by - the advance lever or the fact that you're using A STRAP.
For something that small costing 8k I'd be using a strap too.
Not using a strap is as dumb as cyclists not wearing helmets because "it's cooler" to not wear one.

I got the chance to shoot with an M8 for some fashion photography a while ago and the photos were phenomenal. This camera however confuses me. It feels like a novelty item. The reason you could shoot film without super accurate meters was because it was so versatile. If you under or overexposed your photos, the film was very forgiving. Digital however can be a pain in the ass. Overexpose and you'll lose highlight detail, underexpose and you'll get noise. If you want the novelty of shooting without a screen, save yourself some money and buy an old film Leica body.

Admittedly, once I learned the cocking lever was not actually functional, I was thinking what is Leica thinking making a pure camera devoid of the superfluous and adding a seamingly useless non-functioning novelty gimmick to this new M10-D release?
It would have been cool if the lever would have been actually functional like on the Epson RD-1 which cocks the shutter. But, I suppose you can simulate the cocking action if you really wanted to. Otherwise, I don't see the fold out thumb rest being as much use for actual photo taking as it is for an added grip or "hook" for your thumb when holding the camera downward at rest. it could help alleviate the need to exert as much force to grip the camera with thumb and fingers pressing against the camera body.
So, I do take back my initial impressions about the cocking lever. It can have a semi-useful function. And, at least it can fold out of the way and not jab you in the chest, ribs or sides as most other accessory thumb grips often can and do.
Enough bitching.. as many of us who see a new Leica product often can make a fuss over initially. On to the good stuff regarding the M10-D.
I totally get the fun of shooting with this M10D is in great part to the mystery of not knowing if you nailed the shot of not. Additionally, what you see in through the viewfinder to compose is never going to be exactly the same as what you will get when using a true rangefinder. So, there's that surprise and intrigue to see if the image you made matches what you envisioned the shot would look like.
It really is in most respects just like shooting a film camera.. the surprise, expectations and the disappointments. But, unlike film, you don't have to wait and go through as much trouble to process the film and put it to paper (or scanned) to see... although, I know a good many would argue that's also part of the experience and fun is actually developing the film and putting it to paper (or scanned) to be hands on to make and produce the final image all the way through. I don't have time for that these days, so I'm down with the "digital film processing' convenience the M10-D could alternatively provide.
I would say adding the wifi connectivity to a smartphone app may have been too much tech for such a stipped down camera. BUT, I do appreciate the option to check, if I should desire to, and the instant ability to share, if I should also desire to. And, some angles you may actually want to use the smart phone as live view cause you just can't get down low, or tight or high enough with your body to get a very specific shot. Then again, you always have the option to still challenge yourself mentally and physically to try and make a difficult shot work.
I'm sold.. take my money when I have it all!
I am hoping the M11-D have the actual advance lever just like the function of the Epson RD-1 and will save the battery for a much longer time and a more slimmer body close to the LEica M6 classic.
So they reused the body, reused the internals, removed the screen and added a pointless lever and you get all this for the exact same price? Now that is marketing done right! Must have a great overhead this camera =D

Great review Kai! Got a chance to do a video review in Hong Kong! It’s takes awesome photos but it’s a hefty price tag. Only for expert photographers.

I think I could enjoy a city break and take some shots and be very very happy knowing I bagged quality images! My break would be awesome! Only when I get home would I realise my compositions and metering were a disappointment! :). When you think about it...you actually enjoy the shooting process without worrying about the results!

It's fun how you say you get used to not having a screen.
I saw Jared polins review of the Leica and he kept trying to look at the back to see his pictures, and he also couldn't get used to the rangefinder focusing.
I just found it a bit funny, personally I would probably also need some time to get used to the focusing since I've never used a rangefinder.

I think the M 10 D is a great idea. The fake winder makes it look just like my old MP. I’m sure I would be “winding” between digital shots, sort of like absentmindedly petting your dog. (Similar comforting feeling with no need to pick up poop.) Now, Leica should bring out a Monochrom D.
Your Leica reviews over the years have always been informative and have always inspired me to get out and use my various M cameras and those great lenses. Thanks for this first look at Leica’s newest iteration.

It will be interesting to see Leica's sales projections for the M10-D, and ten meet the few people who actually saw the value in its "features".
Leica will deliver an external EVF. It is connected to the connection (below the base plate) with a cable. There will be a modified bottom plate for this purpose. At this connection you can also connect an external monitor (Casio). We will be able to buy this in the first quarter of 2019.
$11,950 Australian just for the body! WTF it has less features, what are they smoking. Let me say Kai with a all due respect at that price tag they are not attracting purists but cashed up tossers, i mean hipsters. I would love to be a purist but i cant afford it!

I totally agree it is way overpriced. Having said that, it's a nice product. They're not manufacturing 50,000 of them like Nikon, Canon, Fuji, so the development and production costs are higher per unit. Just like VWs are cheaper than Lamborghinis
I think Leica is doing the exact right thing. With a shift back to analog photography many photographers enjoy the easyness and the way of shooting analog. And for me personally I take a photo completely different whether i have a analog camera in front of my face or a digital. And that is, what I think Leica wants to achieve. To combine the way and the feeling of shoothin analog with the options providet by the digital way.

Just bought myself an Epson R-D1 which has an actual advance lever that does something. Been shooting film only for over 4 years now and the RD1 is the only digital camera I still considered buying. It's expensive for a 2004 camera but not as expensive as this M10D....

If you buy this camera, you're either 100% fully agree with the design (no screen/wifi /film winder that does nothing), which to me I would rather go for the m10 (which I have) or the m10p. I've got the M-D262 which sometimes I told myself I could be happier with a screen at the back as there were times which I just felt I could check on the files to see if I have exposed the pictures correctly.
I really appreciated the tips on focusing. I want to hear more Kai camera knowledge!
Great video, as usual, Kai but you must miss Loc. I do. He’s been replaced by a rig.... Oh, and I love that camera and would have grabbed one if that winder cocked the shutter like the Epsom did. What a shame...
