- My old body style (OBS) Ford is handling this heavy vintage (1971) truck bed Alaskan Camper beautifully! The camper install is a bit different than the usual install, but so far it works just fine. Lots of plans for this rig, or rigs 😁🍻

Hey Jimmy if you can’t find a 8 footer and you’re dead set on mounting a bike rack I would mount a 2inch receiver tube under the the front bumper area and carry your bikes out front. It used to be common practise back in the day for people with Campers to carry their Honda 125 Trails out front and considering your Rig smacks of the 70’s and 80’s IMO it would certainly fit! Those old Alaskan Campers are beauties and worth saving!

Agreed these campers are amazing. I know they made them in a few different configurations. 8 footers, 10 footers with non cabovers and cabovers and they're still in business today. Pretty cool 😎
@@JimmyMeatwhistle From 1973 to 1977 I was stationed in Fort St John, BC (Mile 47 of the Alaska Highway - or Alcan as it was known to most American’s so I’ve seen hundreds of Rigs just like yours decked out front and back with Jerry cans, multiple spare tires, external window screens (Alcan was gravel back then) and Trail bikes “hanging off” the front bumper! This “new” Rig of yours is giving me flash backs lol!

The perfect combo, I'm looking at getting my truck setup the same way. I just have to find the same camper. I really like the Alaskan campers .

These old trucks are built to work. They were commonly used to haul and the suspension was tuned for hauling rather than ride quality.
These hd versions are particularly nasty when empty..
stick the bikes inside the camper. you are going to have to move them either way. what beautiful country you are traveling through.

My dad actually had a truck camper blow off the back of his truck due to a failed tie down point. It exploded all over the highway in spectacular fashion. Thankfully it was empty.
Now there is a video, haha! When I was about 10 I remember we lost the tent trailer down around South Carolina on the highway. It unhooked and ended up passing us and going into oncoming. Luckily no one was hurt. That would have been another great video 😆
I want an OBS ford so badly to do a camper truck. I have no clue what to look for when buying one used tho.

Get a front receiver hitch and put the bikes on the front ..... just an option
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I think that totally makes sense and it also gives me a place for my spare tire. At the moment I have nothing for the spare other than in the bed.
@@JimmyMeatwhistle I'd check to make sure you don't block out the headlights or airflow, but you should have enough "front end" to hold the weight ... especially with the leaf springs.

That 7.5 l a k a 460 is unbelievably bad on fuel. Like, frightening when the truck is empty. Things just get worse when you put stuff in the back 😳
