      Dino Vukusic idiotic? That’s a bit harsh ain’t it? Most of this was pretty reasonable. Stop drinking so much alcohol and refined sugars which is better for both ur health and wallet and don’t be wasteful. That was the gist of most of the video. What’s idiotic about that?

      I actually found quitting to not be very difficult. I'll still drink some rarely at restaurants, or a can as a treat. Besides the sprite I had a few days ago at a movie with a friend, I can't even remember the last time I had any.

    I grew up with my mother being an alcoholic. She couldn't hold down a job, got us kicked out of an apartment, and made me miserable my entire Junior year of high school. My stepfather would go through a bottle of vodka every 3 days or so and decided to drink instead of facing his problems. The more he drank the more she drank, and made him more miserable so he drank even more. They both drank and drove. My mother is miserable and my stepdad has Esophageal cancer. It serves as a constant reminder that alcohol is a poison and I have never had even a sip since I was 16. I would never disparage someone who drinks infrequently and recreationally, but please recognize that making it a habit is not good for you, financially, mentally, or physically. It doesn't help relieve yourself of your problems it masks them. That's how I feel anyway, if you disagree, let me know why.

      @yellowbird5411 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I also come from a similar family pattern. It wasn't just my junior year, it lasted until I was an adult. But people who say they drink because of problems are often using that as an excuse to drink. We all have problems. Drinking only makes the problems worse, with broken relationships, failed jobs, health problems, social dysfunction and risk of injury to others. Chemical dependency on alcohol needs treatment, and there are pharmaceuticals that can help in taking away the cravings now. And there are inpatient/outpatient clinics all over the place. There is no excuse to not stop any more.

    • @eddenoy321
      @eddenoy321 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      blackmesa232323 Alcohol is a naturally made substance, so chances are you are getting traces of it in certain foods. Anything in excess becomes toxic, even drinking water. Moderation in all things.

      Thelondonbadger exactly. I go out and have 1-2 beers tops depending on how many hours are spent at said place in a social situation. At a certain point, you're passed the age of wanting to get piss drunk and enjoy certain alcoholic beverages for the sake of their taste and maybe a little buzz occasionally. If it's a controlled and limited consumption, it's not a huge issue.

      I have been in economic tight spots. Just hold on. Dont loose your mind, and try to cut your expenses on the most useless things first. Like scented paper towels, brand food, candy. Another good thing is to really watch it with the showers.
      Last thing is... Yes, fun has to be more modest now, but you still gotta put some resources in it, else you are going to hate it. Best to have a happy modest family with a little birthday cake, than bitter birthdays chewing your family away.

    For the weaning off of soda I would recommend replacing it with sparkling/carbonated flavored water that doesn't have any added sugar or anything. You can get the carbonation craving out of the way without having to consume so much sugar. Def helped me.

    • @markcoren2842
      @markcoren2842 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree completely! When I first moved in with my wife and stepkids, I hadn't watched cable or over-the-air tv for about a decade. They were all teens/preteens who were fairly active so at one point we sat down and talked about how much they actually watched and how that cost broke down. We found that it worked out to be a bit over $5/hr for the amount of time they actually watched. Pretty quickly, they decided it wasn't worth it, and we axed the cable bill, replacing it eventually with an inexpensive Netflix subscription.
      Now, it's 9 years later and we've saved over $10,000 just by cancelling cable. Until the kids headed off to college, we put aside the savings each year and chose ways to spend it on activities with/for the kids. Cutting the cable is a great way to save!

    My favorite one is saving on food. Stay sharp, when it comes down to food.
    And I don’t only mean eat at home because you can still spend a lot of money on food in the grocery store, I mean really think about what you are doing and try to plan it, don’t go hungry to the grocery shop after work, because guess what you’ll spend more. Sit down on a Sunday or whenever your day-off may be and write down your plan for the week, what are you planning on eating, what ingredients do you need for that, write it down and use it as your plan.
    And really try to only put down what you’re able to eat in one week, don’t overestimate yourself, because it is one thing that you are throwing away food that other people could use but it is also another thing that you are spending more on food that you’re not ‘using.
    Another tip that I have on spending less in the grocery shop is, buy in bulk, what is amazon for? Stuff like toilet paper, soap, tooth paste and so on, can be kept for a long time before going bad, and you mostly get a nice discount on items that you buy in bulk. What do you think about that, Bush?

      US Americans *waste way too much* food, including people who are struggling financially. I was at a friend's family home and they had *disparate left overs* in their fridge, mostly in the back, like it was going to be thrown out.
      And they felt they didn't have *enough* food in the fridge. Not only did I pull it all out, but I made beef burritos with all the fixings, enough for at least 3 people. They saw me enjoying it and one gave in and joined me eating it.
      I can't get over how surprised they were at my ability to pull a meal together out of left overs. Mind you, the *fridge was full* and they were complaining that there was nothing to eat.
      Excuse me, but Damn us spoiled a.... N. Americans! Crying about money and throwing perfectly edible food away.
      My sister used to do that s...t. Packed freezer, but nothing to eat?! Sorry, it makes me mad as hell.

      BABY - Become A Better You I usually meal plan for 5-6 days then on Sunday I spend some money if I go out, but I stay on a $20 budget.

    • @yellowbird5411
      @yellowbird5411 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For those who really want to save, they have to decide what foods they realistically will eat, and want to eat. If you buy five chickens because they are on sale, and throw them in the freezer, then it should be because you like chicken, know how to fix it, and can eat a whole chicken in two or three days. If not, then buy what you know you like and that requires a minimum of effort to fix. When you are tired, overworked or depressed, fixing food is not on your list to do, even if it means throwing it out. Keep things on hand that you can grab in a hurry, like sandwich stuff, salads, fruits, cheeses, fruit juice and nuts. Not every meal has to be a five star production. If you like pizza, don't order it out, buy frozen and put extra toppings on it. Cut it up and freeze the rest so you can grab it and heat it in a pan with a lid. That's what I do. Same with burgers, hot dogs, or anything frozen. I use a very large frying pan with a glass lid, and "bake" my frozen whatever. Fifteen minutes, and I have a meal, no effort.

    I worked in computer store long ago. A McDonald manager brought in computer for repair. Somehow we found a worksheet about inventory cost. Soda in 16 oz cup cost about 10 cents. Now I realized why they promoted the meal plan with soda which customers would think a deal. Or Any size for only 99 cents. 711 stores do the same to lure you coming in.

    I had a breakthrough in my life about 7 years ago. I have always been a hoarder(prepper) because I garden and hunt so its natural to have food stores. My mother fell momentarily ill and she lives out to of state so a was going to move closer to her and my step father like a good son would do. I had so much stuff to get rid of and sell. Over the years I have gained skills which negate most of the tools and gadgets I was storing anyways. She fully recovered so I stayed at my home with the few material things I was going to haul to my parents..its been a year and I may even have fewer items. I encourage anyone to get skills and knowledge not gadgets and gizmos. The library and internet can liberate you from most of your material objects. Also I read a book by Miyamoto Musashi called the book of five rings(go rin no sho) and within it had an extra passage called the way of walking alone(dokkodo) and it said it is best to not have favorites things or preferences....because your enemy will learn them and use them against you..this thought always is in my mind not based in fear but for happiness. Coke or Pepsi? I don't care water will suffice! Red or blue? Left or right? It doesn't matter I will accept and face whatever is in my path. Good tips and great points. Thanks for the vid ...yes I know I'm strange but I'm happy and harmless

      Prakriti a good support shoe is a must I stay away from 10 dollar shoes that hurt feet more than good they do. Dr Scholes shoes are good but don't last long. Maybe their more expensive ones do. I would also add new videogames. They drop in price extremely quickly after they launch on the used market, and older videogames can usually be picked up for under $10 a piece for the vast majority of them. Of course, rarer games will cost more. And then once you buy them for a while, you quickly realize you have enough to last you for years. If not decades.

      Not if you buy Nintendo games :( they rarely drop below $60. Lately I've been a lot pickier with the games I buy, only getting the ones I really think I'll play a lot and enjoy the most. And I get a lot more indie games like Stardew Valley that are cheaper and can have good messages in them.

    I started using washrags instead of kleenex. Never ever have a blowout and the texture is nice. I will get medicated tissues if I am sick and using them a whole lot.
    I also like those microfiber towels over paper towels. I only use paper towels to clean up greasy messes that need to go in the trash. You can also save greatly on toilet paper and get MUCH cleaner if you use a bidet attachment. Buy a good quality one for ~$60 on Amazon and it will last a long time. This also saves on washing costs as my pants no longer need to be washed every time I wear them. They are more like a jacket. Wash them maybe once a month or so. It is the LEGS that get smelly as they accumulate stuff from you wiping your hands on them.
    I also gave up cokes long ago, but I still get to drink fizzy stuff. Use club soda and a little drink mix and you will have a good time.

    I agree on all, especially the shoes. I have worn the same pair of leather shoes for around 3 years. Every single day. They still look and feel new. They are Merrel Moab Rovers. I have 2 brand new pairs in box (that I bought when on sale for around $65; normal price is around $100). So, 3 pairs cost me $230, and, should last me over 10 years. They are waterproof, fit me perfect, and feel great! I fish, hike, camp, go to stores, etc. and they are the best shoes I've had. I should buy a few more pairs to keep so I am set for life.

    Hey Beat the Bush.... I have a couple of tips for you. Wow, I might be out beating the bush....not really....but here they are. I'm very ECO. I hate waste. I save all junk mail and rip it up to condense it and put it in the recycling bin. I even sometimes bring home receipts and straw wrappers and ice cream cone wraps on the cone to recycle. But here's the real tips: save napkins in restaurants to use later (I see you do) and ALSO save the towels you use in the restroom. Think about it. Your hands are washed and CLEAN. The paper towels are only to DRY your hands and therefore CLEAN. I keep them in my car to use on my windows and dash and wheel etc. At home I use them to clean my coffee table etc. Also,with the change (coins), I have a circular zip case that fits in the indentation in my door arm rest and I put it in there , and therefore don't carry the change around. Then when I have enough, I take it in to the boba tea place and pay with coins and SELL them the remaining coins. Small businesses really NEED and appreciate change!!!!! I use very little paper towels. They are not eco. I basically use them for drying cherries and then to put the pits in etc. and draining the oil off of tempura etc. It takes me forever to use a big pack of them. For clean up jobs, I swear by microfiber cloths. Save a lot of money, be ECO and get the job done way better! I used to be a soda-a-holic. That stuff is ADDICTIVE. Your body gets addicted to the sugar and craves it. I used to drink a couple of big gulps a day and then go home and have more cans of soda!!!! It made me fat! I have to be very careful about soda because if I let myself have it, I can slip back into addiction FAST! With sugar, it causes body yeast infections, and the yeast is what CRAVES the sugar, it's main food source! I drink iced tea (unsweetened) and water. I do go to McDonald's to get iced tea, quite often, because it is 96degrees to 115 degrees here in Arizona and I get side cups of ice. I do since out the cups and reuse them. Here's an idea that I thought of today when I went into McD's , get the tea and take your own McD's cups and get FREE ICE. I got three cups of ice and put it in my freezer. You can imagine, living in AZ that I go through a LOT of ice. So, I got my large iced tea for 1.07 (with tax) and free ice worth that much as well. So, I figure the ice paid for the drink! Here's another thing, take your own plastic or glass, food storage container to the restaurant so you do not have to use their styrofoam or plastic, or take some of the ones they provide and put them in the dishwasher and put them in a bag or box in the car to reuse! I bet you would like this tip. On TH-cam check out he videos on making your own dish soap, LAUNDRY SOAP AND SOFTENER, and dishwasher soap. Did you know you can make 5 GALLONS for $10? At that price you can give some in half gallons to family and friends!

    The reason why people can't stop drinking soda (by my experience) is, because instead of regular sugar it has HFCS (i.e. glucose-fructose syrup) in it, which, not only doesn't make you feel satiated, but makes you literally gulp the drink, and also makes you crave fruity juices like hell even few days later.

    I always buy the paper towels that have half sheets. Then, I often tear a piece of one of those off, if I have something really small to lean up. So much waste happens from using full sheets for small things. I buy paper towels in a giant pack maybe once every 4-8 months. So I probably spend about $20 a year on them and I use the all the time. I'm learning to make my own alcohol now. You can make a gallon of hard cider out of $4 of apple juice and $0.35 of pizza yeast. You can turn it into apple wine by adding a cup and a half of sugar when it is half done. The additional sugar gets turned into additional alcohol, raising the drink to a wine level.
    There is no tax on alcohol if you make it this way and live in a state with no tax on food.

    If you have trouble with cravings for alcohol, phenibut is a good alternative to use 1-2 times per week. It has the positive effects of alcohol without the negatives (e.g., you can still do things you want to do, you are lucid). It's great for relaxing and de-stressing after a long week.
    And for quitting soda, seltzer water is amazing. It has that carbonation with a strong "bite" which I think is the major component of why people crave soda, and it's just healthy water.

True, it would be smart to save that money, but on the other hand, I love steak and want to put my hard earned money towards it because life is short. Correct if I am wrong (becasue I yet to see all your videos) but I feel like I haven't seen you talk about the other side of the coin on these topics in terms of knowing when to enjoy the small luxuries of life. Moderation can be difficult with alcohol. Some people will naturally stop after just one or two drinks, but many people will have one drink and continue drinking until they are drunk. I am like this. If I buy less alcohol with the intent of forcing myself to drink less, I'm likely to go out and buy more after I've drank what I've bought. I'm considering quitting alcohol altogether. It makes me do stupid things, it destroys my sleep, and it makes me feel shitty for a longer period of time than it makes me feel good.

    Yup, I'm quitting alcohol on Monday, permanently. My turning point was about 2AM today. My tolerance has been pushing so far I'd use up almost all my unallocated money, which wasn't so bad overall. Enjoying some little things in life that cost money is 1 reason I deliberately don't allocate a certain amount of money in my budget, and choose to let myself buy some things on impulse. It's not frugal, but I like it. Alcohol was fun. Earlier, I realized it's no longer as much fun as it used to be. Still somewhat fun, but less fun at the same cost AND new-found side-affects means it's significantly lower value and becoming higher risk. So, I figure it's no longer worth my time/money. Sneakers on the other hand, I won't stop buying those. I just prefer the feel of sneakers, especially a $10 pair from Walmart about twice a year. I can be light on my feet when I need to be. It works for me and where I live. I make up for it by keeping only 1 pair of shoes and using that all year and for everything. The shoes I have are slip-on, black and pretty basic looking running shoes, so those work for almost any situation if somebody in the know about formal clothing doesn't look too closely. I'll buy loafers when I'm over 65 LOL.

      Most of the world outside of Asia, doesnt refer to anything west/south of central china as asian. Which obviously doesnt make sense, but the western world describes people based on how they look, and not where they're from. Eastern asians just happened to be dubbed the "asians", and so forth, based on appearance.

    I buy leather winter boots on sale, maybe not the most popular colour. They usually cost around $100 - $150 CDN and last me 5 years with good care. True economy.
    Another way to get free paper towel is to keep the towel you dried your hands on. Make sure you wash your hands properly, not just a quick rinse in cold water. Let the towels dry out and use them for really mucky cleaning jobs. Also when using a public, work or store washroom, I take a little bit extra t.p. just in case the next washroom I use has no t.p. Don't take too much, though, it's inconsiderate of others.
    I don't drink sodas because of the link to pancreatic cancer and kidney problems, of course alcohol does as well.
    I know a lot of people buy food in bulk or in large sizes and think they've saved money over smaller sizes -- check the unit price if posted. I've often found that 2 smaller items are cheaper than the large bulky size. I agree meal planning is a good idea. I wish I could convince my family of this.

    Paper towels. I've been washing (Yes WASHING) paper towels after use. Good paper towels can be washed 10 times before they completely fall apart. I often wash/dry them and use it again next day. Paper towel commercials always show tossing into the trashcan (advertisement psychology in works here - throw away so you will buy more) but it can be washed many times. I use less than 1 roll per month in my kitchen (and I cook a lot). Try it - you'll be amazed.

      Ryan Asher He gave up slavery for frugality. Not a bad trade. Not everyone can do it though. We do need some money. Moreover, many young people who are fortunate enough to get along with their parents to the point where they actually CAN live with them derive a mutual benefit through sharing the labour and financial burdens of a household.People lived multi-generational for much of recent human history. Marriage and children ? That's a fast ride into forced slavery for life. So it is a less popular lifestyle than in previous generations.

      Oshini Gamage Everyone tries to be frugal even if they are super wealthy. The super rich bargain like crazy and start bidding wars on investments of all types. And the wealthy aren't asleep when it comes to everyday expenses as well. It's all relative, even if they spend more than you do. It is the same thought pattern. Everyone wants a bargain. We all love something for nothing. We all hate the feeling of paying too much. People are aware of costs until they actually lose the cognitive ability to continue doing so. So I suggest that searching for ways to save actually helps you remain sharp and build brain power. Just don't overdo it or become obsessive about it.

    I read that high fructose corn syrup, the stuff that’s in soda, causes liver cirrhosis and liver hypertrophy at the same rate as alcohol. I still crave my sugar fix once in awhile, but I just take a small glass, put lots of ice in it, and I drink that instead of a can. It’s really only half a small glass by volume that way. Also I buy those tiny cans, that way you get less waste. You really don’t need much to get your fix. Also, if you eat a plum with your soda fix, or a pear or anything that has fibre, you neutralize the glycemic index of the sugar, and it doesn’t cause an insulin spike.

    • @BeatTheBush
      @BeatTheBush  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to do the same. During my last stretch of soda I drink half a can. The rest gets poured out. I really wanted it back then and now, I'm fine not drinking it at all. So do think about taking that last step.

    Great suggestions. I laughed when you mentioned saving the napkins from fast food places. They always hand out too many and most people just throw them away. I save them and use them. Plus, paper towels are a waste of trees.
    A few other suggestions for stuff not to buy: lottery tickets or anything gambling related (just a huge ripoff); most batteries (use rechargeables in most things); Starbucks (make coffee at home); convenience store or vending machine refreshments (grossly overpriced); extended warranties and maintenance agreements (if there was any credible chance they would work in your favor, companies wouldn't sell them).
    People who say "who cares about saving money; you can't take it with you" should consider that if you stop wasting money on things you buy more out of habit than actual enjoyment, you can use your money for what you really do want. A couple that spends $8 every work day on overpriced coffee could repurpose that $2,000 a year to take a halfway decent vacation. And, still enjoy a coffee on the way to work just by making it at home for practically nothing.
