Even though I was just looking for instructions on how to take the case off of my laptop, this video was exactly what I needed. I was able to re-seat everything and get my laptop working again. Thanks very much!
A thank you, and a query: My Dell laptop was overheating and I could not figure out why, didn't want to pay a fortune to take it to a laptop doctor so I decided to take it apart myself and see if I could work out the problem. Now, I'm a complete novice and have never ever taken apart a laptop before, and I've heard that Dell laptops are some of the most complicated to take apart and replace... the process was very fiddly so I wouldn't recommend trying to take apart the laptop to other novices (figured my laptop is so battered anyway it wouldn't matter if I broke it) . But this tutorial was so damn helpful. I understood every step, and the tutor made all of their gestures quite clear. I like how they show you what each part looks liek after they take it off, very clear. And once I got down to see the actual components, I found a big ball of dust between the fan and the heatsink. Removed the dust, put the laptop back together and it hasn't overheated once since. Thank you so much! However, after putting it back together, the touchpad seems to have stopped working altogether and won't pick up either gestures or button clicks. I've got a wireless mouse , so it doesn't matter too much, but do you know why this has happened after I put the laptop back together? What can I do to fix it? Many thanks :)
I would guess that the touchpad failure is going to be related to a cable that was forgotten or the cable not being plugged in all the way. You should check the cable @ 2:30 it controls the touchpad and will probably solve you problem.
My laptop is 7520 series and the can't be removed since it is attached to the heat sink.Another tip for people is when trying to pull out the fan connector, don't do it by pulling by the cables as in the video because you might be end up with those cables in your hand and the cnonector still plugged in.Just pull the connector not the cables.
Great video, clear comments, thank you. N.B. the 7520 model has 2 keyboard cables to remove (backlight?) and the motherboard itself must be unscrewed/flipped over to release the fan/heatsink assembly from the underside. To prepare for motherboard removal I took out the hard drive and ram. Four hard drive screws, nine motherboard screws, six (I think) heat sink screws to release the fan. Two more plugs before flipping the motherboard, not difficult. Have thermal paste handy for the interface between the heat sink and CPU. My laptop is quiet again.
It goes well up to the last step which is removing the fan itself. Not sure if it's just me but I couldn't remove the fan. Tried to pull it out either by hand or using a screwdriver but seems like it's bound somewhere. Maybe needs removing more screws?
Awesome... Brilliant.....Very very nice and very easy tutorial for a newbie like me...I'm going to clean my fan..My 5520 is going too hit don't know why..I'm playing cod ghost and ny laptop shut down automatically within 5 to 10 min...It's heated too much...May be fan not working or may be full of dust...Thnx buddy for such lovely video...Keep posting vids like this for ppls like me
hi there, your video was very helpful and i was able to clean the fan perfectly. but when i assembled the laptop i found out the speakers were not working. any idea which wire may be loose?
Step 12 will show the speaker cable on the left side of the motherboard. blog.parts-people.com/2013/05/23/dell-inspiron-15r-5520-7520-speaker-removal-and-installation/
Great video really helped me with disassembling, however when I reached the remove the fan part, my fan did not budge, I was only able to remove the top part? It's an inspiron 15r 7520, how do I switch fans if it's attached to the heatsink, like the guy below me said. Thx for your time :)!
+patr ick If you have AMD graphics you probably have a different fan that is attached to the heatsink. If that is that case there will be 7 screws you have to remove in order to remove the heatsink / fan assembly. Also, you will have to replace the entire assembly, the heatsink and the fan.
Thanksss for the tutorial! I have an Inspiron 15R 7520, and the fan won't come out, it's attached to some kind of copper bars, the heat sink I guess. Do I need to replace the entire set ? And how do I take it off ? Thank you!
You will probably have the replace the entire heatsink assembly. I think it's held on to the motherboard with 7 screws. You will have to either loosen or remove the screws and unplug the fan to remove the heatsink. When reinstalling the heatsink, make sure to remember to apply thermal compound.
You can also remove the 3 screws on top of the fan itself to remove it and leave the heat sink assembly in place. Do the same with your replacement fan and swap them. It's a lot easier than taking out the whole heat sink!
Thanks for the video, successfully replaced my fan. But when I turned the laptop back on, it had an error message, sonething about drivers I think. I was about to write the error code down and the screen went totally white, and now it's like that permanently. I can use an external monitor but the laptop screen stays white.
Great tutorial! Helped me to clean the fan although I would have never figured it out. Unfortulantely when I unplugged the keyboard cable , the keyboard itself was connected to the interior with another cable which was NOT shown in the video tutorial. Shame I broke it when I tried to unplugged it. Magic as it may seem, after pulling back together the laptop both keyboard and touchpad seem to work flawless. Any idea what ic ould have been? Happy ney year and many thanks for all the work you have put into this tutorial.
My fan started running at 2900 RPM for some reason causing my laptop to overheat. Tried switching a new fan into it but now it only runs at 2200 RPMs. Any idea on what could be causing the problem?
No, unfortunately we don't have videos showing how to replace individual keys. The problem we have is that there are so many different keyboards and different keyboard designs, there can be 5 different ways to replace the key per model laptop.
I take a question, please , my Inspiron 15R SE has backlit keyboard , I do an internal cleanse it and the keyboard lights are not lit , wanted to know where is the internal component responsible for the keyboard backlight ? Thanks .
Bruno S. There are 2 cables on the back of the keyboard. The smaller one powers the backlight. It's probably just a loose connection and needs to be plugged back in to the motherboard.
+kungfahza If it is the power button cable that is broken, then yes, that would cause the laptop to not turn on. You will need to replace either the power button cable or the power button cable and power button circuit board.
+Martin Bojkovski If your laptop has the Intel GPU, you do not need to remove the motherboard to remove the fan. If it has the AMD Radeon GPU, the fan is attached to the heatsink and the motherboard would have to be removed.
I did the same thing but now my laptop won't charge and it won't turn on. When I press the power button it lights up for 2 seconds and then turns off. I tried checking all the connections but all of it seems ok. Please please please tell me what to do.
Not charging? That would be related to the DC Jack but it wasn't unplugged in this tutorial, so I'm not sure what that's about. Now, the power button turning on for 2 seconds and then turning off sounds like there has got to be a loose cable, or maybe, the cable that's not fully seated. I would go back through and unplug and reseat all the cables and see if that fixes it.
Hello, When trying to remove my fan for cleaning, I accidentally broke the bond on the metal part to the left of the fan (what is the name of that part?). Now i need to reapply thermal paste to close off the gaps and allow the heat to escape from the cpu. Can you please explain how I can re-secure that part to the motherboard?
DJ Krucial It's an easy fix. Just clean off the old heatsink compound, with alcohol, on the heatsink and CPU, and reapply the compound on the contact points that you cleaned. Arctic Silver is a good brand for the compound. And you only use a very small amount, like less than the size of a small pea. Tighten the heatsink down and your ready to go.
Parts-People.Com, Inc Thanks so much. The last thing is that after removing the 6 mother board screws and disconnecting all necessary cables, the board won't loosen from the computer. I don't want to force it too hard, any suggestions for how to safely remove it?
DJ Krucial Here is the video for the motherboard removal. th-cam.com/video/dFPvEkHDASE/w-d-xo.html And here is a written manual ppci.me/b/FXIN You need to remove the Battery, Access Door, Memory, Hard Drive, Optical Drive, Keyboard, Palmrest, and DC Jack Bracket. All of the exact screw locations are marked in images in the written manual.
+noumeet desai It looks like that part was skipped in the video. There is a screw that holds the optical drive in. this video shows it. th-cam.com/video/jIi29ITuj94/w-d-xo.html
This looked so easy that I decided I COULD clean my fan after all! ... Unfortunately my touchpad stopped working after I did this. Any idea what I might have screwed up in reassembly? Everything else is working fine. I can type, obviously. My optical drive is working. I hear the fan spinning in there. And I can still turn the computer on, use battery power, and use my wireless mouse with the thing. It's just the touchpad, which I still like to use, has stopped working altogether.
If I had to guess, I would guess that the touchpad cable (the 3rd cable mentioned @ 2:24) is either loose or not fully seated into the motherboard connector. That's what I would check first anyway. If it's not that, then it is probably where that cable connects to the touchpad is loose.
wow this is pathetic you have to remove so many screws etc just to get to the fan, on my old dell laptop all you had to do was take out the keyboard and then the metal plates below the keyboard to get to the fan.
did you remove crews to take the fan because i have a dell inspiron 15R 5520 but i can't take the fan if i do the same thing like you.Could you help me?

Awesome and thank you Sir. liked & Subscribed 😊
You're welcome!
I will be trying this when my fan comes in, in about a week. but based on the replies and the ease that you showed, i suspect that You Da Real MVP

It's a little old, but can the CPU be upgraded on the 5520 model? Thanks & great tutorial
The best video about my notebook - thank you
such a straightforward tutorial, thank you very much indeed!
Thank you very much, I replacedmy fan today. Everything worked fine!

I am not being able to remove the fan.. how can u do it so easily...
here is shown the 5520 - the 7520 is different, because the fan has two long metallic things on it

can the heatsink be removed from the fan?
Probably, I honestly haven't tried to remove the fan.
if i were to clean the fan on my laptop i have to do the same stops right?

It may have been the cable for a backlit keyboard.
Parts-People.Com, Inc You are right - just checked. I believe I can live without. Thanks for your response and again kudos for the great tutuorial.
Thank you very much! This is the best.
how are you managing to unsnap the palmrest? Mine wont buldge (7520)

Is the over heating affect the gbu usage abd fps drops in windows and games ??

It's most likely the cables located under the keyboard. You can see them @ 2:24
I can't turn on the laptop. Is it becuase the cable which is near the cooling fan is broken? How can I fix it? help me please...
+kungfahza If it is the power button cable that is broken, then yes, that would cause the laptop to not turn on. You will need to replace either the power button cable or the power button cable and power button circuit board.
