Love can turn to hate. Hate can turn to love. James did hate her, but he also loved her deeply. So much so that he couldn't go on without her, let alone forgive himself for what he did.
@ShalnoyShalopai the worst suffering he could receive is the one he inflicted upon himself by killing his other half. No monster, no other person could ever hurt him more than he hurt himself by killing his Mary.
James didn't hate Mary for his disease, but he also did. I think that he didn't blame the disease for the person his wife had become, but damn did he hate what it did to her and how she changed. He hated the disease, but hated her more. "Hard times don't define someone" Oh yes they do. James didn't know how to deal with a hard time, neither with changes.
That final clip... One of my favorite additions to the remake is the fact James doesn't really launch into a monologue before the final boss with absolute conviction like he did in the original. He enjoys his moment with Mary, even though deep down I'm sure he knew she was Maria, and then he seems genuinely remorseful that he's rejecting her. Still caring for her even though he knows she's something bad for him. Instead of "I am here to kill you final boss." "No, I shall kill you instead.", it's "I'm sorry. This can't work out." "I won't let you leave" which feels way more real to actual relationships.
Maria is the version of Mary he wishes to have, Ig. A seemingly "younger", hotter woman, she's his ideal type. And that's so funny because he ended up with MARY, showing that even though you desire something it may not be the right choice for you. It's like saying "I wanna be rich", but you're poor and you'll likely die poor but you can still make the best of it. Wealth's not always the secret to happiness.
Me as a kid doing fun little quiz about what character am i from videogames and getting either him or Isaac Clarke was a prophecy i didn't knew was needed.
James loved what she was, and hated what she became. Such a sad thing to happen. I always wonder how people living with people doomed to death by illness wake up everyday and look how corrupted their loved ones become. Love the edit btw
I feel like a lot of people did not get the depth of the game and its characters, they demonize and make saints when the story tells you there's no good or bad, just humans, people, that make mistakes, and commit terrible acts but aren't evil, that are driven to the edge in many ways, some lose themselves while others try to survive, all of them being preyed upon by the town and its sinister hunger. Think of each of them, of their actions, of their plans, Eddie was bullied until the point that he grabbed a gun and killed one of the guy's dog because he made fun of him and then killed him, The town called to him and he escaped to Silent Hill because he was afraid the police would find him. Angela was abused and suffered because of her father and brother until she finally reached her limit and killed them for what they did afterward called by the town so she would arrive in hopes of finding her mother and killing her and then herself. James lived happily married until Mary had fallen ill, he stayed by her side for a long time until he wasn't able to look at her, in that time Mary would explode at him, verbally abusing him and pushing him away, then asked him to stay with her for she was afraid (She was facing her own death after all), James tried to stay with her, he wanted to stay with, but he was being pushed away by her, he began resenting her, hating what had become of her, he still loved his wife, but he no longer saw her when he looked at Mary that was not his wife, he suffocated her and then a day or two later received the letter Mary had written but the town took advantage of his state, telling him that she was in Silent Hill, he was in denial of his actions and almost began to believe that maybe Mary was still alive, just for him to eventually come to terms with the fact that he killed her. a lot of people can relate to james because they had to take care of a sick loved one, sacrificing their time and life just to stay by their side, some even resenting them for it. Does that make them a bad person? (The canon ending for me is In Water because it serves the most consistency with the story and also with James' character for me) Maria believe it or not is actually real, to an extent in the side story content Born from a Wish goes in depth about her creation, character, and what she did before being found by James, but she is also another victim of the town, a pawn for it's wicked game. A lot of people like to forget or ignore the fact that the town is another character in the story and it is possessed, it has its own motive and its desire. if there is some evil in there is the town itself. I also must mention that I am not justifying any of the character's actions nor do I condone them, but it is important to raise the question: does one bad action from a person defines who they are and what they do? Does a good one define them? simplifying the characters in this story is wrong because it takes away their character and who they are.
I’ll never hear her say that again, I’m so pathetic for waiting for someone who never gave me time even when we were together. I’m just a fool like I’ve always been and she just took advantage but I saw something different, made an entire fantasy. Don’t be me pursue what you love and let that become your partner because you have to have someone love you for who you are not what you do
Why people overglorify this piece of sh.t game? How do you kill someone and forget? OG SH2 was average experience after SH1 and this remake is dumbed down version of original. This doesn't even feel like Silent Hill game only like story of SH2 injected in The last of us 2/RE4 gameplay
Love can turn to hate.

So much so that he couldn't go on without her, let alone forgive himself for what he did.
That why he deserved neverending suffering in Silent Hill

@SleepyAdam Agreed.
“If that’s true then why do you look so sad”
