    Great tutorial thanks. Very in depth. I had an issue trying to use captions with a video clip recorded on a mobile phone. The captions ran vertically. I have been trying to find out if there was a setting to change the orientation, but without luck. I'm glad I watched the video to the end. My solution was to add a title overlay on the top track and use it as a caption track as suggested. It worked very well. Thank you.

    Thank you very much for this great explanation! Do you know if it's possible to center the caption text (instead of left alignment)?

    • @ineomanb

      Unfortunately, for caption that spans over more than 1 line, there isn't any setting for center alignment yet.
      The only "messy" workaround that I've tried is by adding sufficient white space between the last word of the previous line and the first word of the next one. It's obviously not a proper way of doing it.
      Hopefully the OpenShot contributors will add this feature in the future version.

    HI! I have a problem.
    I edited two clips together, and between the two there is a fade out (slow) and a fade in (slow). However, I would need the subtitles to remain visible during the fades between the two clips, but they also disappear together with the images, and then return.
    How can I solve it?
    Thank you

    • @ineomanb

      The solution is already in the video at 14:04
      You need to put the captions on a dedicated track that should be placed as the top-most track. Pls refer to the video for more detailed steps.

    Hello. I have attached an srt file in the Hebrew language to openshot but the software does not display the subtitles. Do you know the reason for this? Thank you

    • @ineomanb

      Hmmm.... I'm not quite sure what exactly you mean by "attaching an srt file to OpenShot", but I believe it may be one of these two.
      If you try to add the file to the project, then OpenShot won't allow it. An srt file is supposed to be opened by the video player, not the video editor.
      If you copy the captions text of an srt file and paste them on the OpenShot's caption editor, then the timestamps of your srt file may not be compatible with OpenShot's caption timestamp format. You need to make sure the timestamp format is in OpenShot's format.

    • @ineomanb

      Oh I see. Well in that case, it's just a language support problem. That means OpenShot doesn't yet fully support Hebrew. I'm sorry to say, that as far as I know, there's nothing you can do except waiting for some kind contributor to add full support to Hebrew to OpenShot.

    • @ineomanb

    It's all nice that it's possible, but unfortunately it loses quality. Or am I doing something wrong?
    My 2 videos were more than 6GB in size, after using Openshot it is only 1.59GB in size.

    • @ineomanb

      Make sure you select the right video profile and quality on the export dialog. It could be that you set the video quality setting to "Low".
      You can refine the video quality setting further by showing the Advanced tab, then click video settings, then set the "Bit Rate / Quality" to your preference, say 12 Mb/s.
      For a trial, maybe you can try exporting your video using TH-cam profile.
      On the export dialog, select Web as profile, then select TH-cam HD as target, and then set the Quality setting to High or Medium.
      It's a trial and error to get the best balance between the video quality and the file size. I've explained this in my other OpenShot tutorial th-cam.com/video/aKkYG-GL2A8/w-d-xo.html.

    I dragged and dropped a caption effect and it wont show up at all

    • @ineomanb

      With your limited information, I can't tell for sure what exactly happened and hence what the root cause was.
      But as I mention in my video, you probably just need to move the Playhead over the clip which you added the Caption effect to.

  • @Arcemedias

    soo my playhead is over the captioned clip and my text is still not showing up. any idea whats wrong?

    • @ineomanb

      Make sure you add the Caption effect to the video clip on the top-most track for any given time, and the video clip's alpha property should not be 0 (or transparent). Or if you've added a fade effect to the video clip, your Playhead might be at the position where your the video is still not visible yet.
      Other than that, it could be just the intermittent minor glitch on the Caption effect, where you can just remove it first, and then try adding it again. I've personally encountered it a couple of times, but it's nothing serious.
      I hope this helps.

      No problem, bro. Maybe try updating your OpenShot to the latest version to solve it.
      The caption editor still has some minor bugs, and I've also mentioned one of them (and the trick to fix it) in the later part of this video.

    Thanks for the kind video and the time you took.
    However, what on earth are people at OpenShot thinking???
    The weirdest, most user-unfriendly, counterintuitive way of applying captions - if you manage, that is.

    • @ineomanb
      @ineomanb  28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, yes, it's not quite intuitive and certainly could be made much better. But let's not forget that it's an open source software developed by many contributors voluntarily incrementally over a long period of time. You should never expect it to be as good as those commercial ones, or those offered by big companies like Bytedance with its CapCut.
      And also maybe (just my guess) the core architecture of OpenShot doesn't quite allow easy addition of a more user friendly caption tool. Maybe that's why the tool is put in the Effect library, which is indeed quite weird.

  • @ObsoletePerson

    This is an awfully obtuse way to apply captions. I wish there was a way we could apply captions to the entire timeline as a whole and not just individual clips. At this stage, if I have an abundance of individual clips, it'd be easier for me to export the entire project as a video file and add captions to that instead.

    • @ineomanb

      Well, I've actually included a simple trick/workaround to achieve that. Someone in the comment even thanked me for that. I guess you skipped that part of the tutorial :)

      It's one of the best out of the free video editors. If you could get a hold of it, Sony Movie Studio 12 or 13 has the best subtle title function--very intuitive, feature-rich, and ease of use.

      Ok thanks. Noted!
      But FYI, I've always tried to make my video as short as possible without sacrificing the completeness and clarity of the topic. For this one, I felt that I had to explain all the possible issues people might encounter under different scenarios, and provide solutions/workarounds for those issues.
      If you feel that it's too long, that's ok with me. But I guess you just work on a single simple scenario, where you just need a straight forward demonstration. So, just skip it, bro! :)
