  • Stop the average person on the street and ask them if Rolex is better than Omega, and there’s a high chance they’ll agree. Rolex is a bigger brand, sells more watches, has a stronger following-yet here’s something that proves that Omega is, in fact, the champion.

Rolex was started by a business man, a really good one. He contracted watchmakers to build a product that was "good enough", but never haute horology, as that made no sense for ROI. His DNA continued on through the brand, and as a result, Rolex's most significant achievements have been not in watchmaking, but in marketing. Rolex invented the first celebrity endorsement. Rolex invented the strategy that by giving away its watches to professionals who would go on to achieve firsts in diving or mountain climbing expeditions, the lay person will feel that the watch...had something to do with it.
And just as often true today as it was back in the 70s, it was Rolex's brilliant marketing and curation of its product catalog that have propelled the brand past its peers. Its watches, however, have remained dormant in horological impact for over half a century.
This is, word for word, how Rolex chooses to introduce itself on its own website: "For over a century, Rolex watches have accompanied explorers and achievers around the world, from the top of the highest mountains to the deepest reaches of the ocean. Today, Rolex is present at the most prestigious events in golf, sailing, tennis, motor sport, and at equestrian tournaments."

SU You couldn't be more wrong. I bet Rolex lasts as long as apple, with tech that changes slowly. Apple must always release new versions annually, which demands progress. Rumors of their demise have been absurdly exagerrated, but I remember Motorola, Nokia, Ericsson. History repeats.
I'm sure both will do well for years, but my money is on Rolex outliving apple.

I remember in basic my corporal haven one. And he use to be proude of it. And said one day you lads may have one of these I wasnt into watches then. But it was somethin to aim for and I fell in love with the seamaster. So I purchased it in love and respect. And had to sell it as I got skint and needed my car on the road. A month later the bloody car went pop and i didnt have the money to fix it. What a shitter. But life goes on and one day I'll save hard again if I can as my kids now come 1st but if I can I'll purchase one again. And smile when wearing it. It will mean more then as it will have a better story to it.

Yeah Rolex made all the right moves during and after the quartz crisis so they came out on top. Omega had a good 20 even 30 years of producing some if the worst watches from any serious swiss brand their only saving grace was continuously producing the speedmaster during those dark years, but aside from Rolex making all the right moves and becoming the status symbol watch and continually making amazing watches. Omega produced a better watch until the end of the 1960s and now they produce a better watch again especially when you factor price. Rolex has the end in some ways but Omega has the better engine inside and it costs less.
I love both brands but I also like an underdog and omega has been the underdog for a long time until now.

Beautiful watch you've featured here. I think Omega is doing more interesting things in watchmaking (co-axial movement, use of ceramics, amagnetic parts, etc). I like Rolex, but lately they've taken some missteps- the ridiculous styling of their new Air King dial is horrible, and the Oyster Perpetual line has added faddish dial colors. Technologically, Rolex is reliable, but has not been particularly groundbreaking since introducing the Oyster case.... what? like 65 years ago? Like many others on this comment board, I think Grand Seiko is the brand to watch; an up and comer which will challenge Rolex.

The Rolex Datejust is basically the entry level grade for Rolex and still made with Aircraft grade materials. Both have walked the Moon. Rolex is much more durable (You wont break them). The board of longitude were looking for a navigation solution, not really a clock (although Harrison’s was the best solution to the problem). Harrison did get paid by the Longitude board, at least most of the prize after much hair pulling and help from his son. Finally Seiko was not unknown in the late 1960’s, far from it. They had been making “Chrono” grade movements for several years. But that was the first time they entered that competition.

Just look at the energy and argument A.M spent getting across a pile of pure nickel plated B.S. If he literally convinced one person out of a thousand to buy a MVMT watch....the MVMT company would be happy. It's not like they have a lot of overhead when it comes to actual watch manufacturing costs.
And for young people watching a channel they should have to put a much more skeptical pair of glasses on at all times. Always ask themselves...."Where is the money or time for this upload coming from." And we should be skeptical, not cynical. It could be a person who loves the sense of international internet community. How many people in Des Moines, Iowa are into collecting 70's funk records? But there are thousands on the internet. Who knows what they have in a milk crate in the basement?

Rolex is the Apple of the watch world. There is much better out there and you can get one with the same specs for cheaper from other brands, but they have managed to convince a large percentage of people, particularly outside of the the aficionados, that they are the pinnacle of high end. In that respect, Rolex is certainly better at business than Omega.

Never had a Rolex, but I own five Omega's of different ages, movements and styles, and they all run beautifully. Even when having not run for some time (though I do try and keep some energy in their respective springs most of the time).
In my opinion, they're say more stylish than Rolex's, and, arguably, more functional/practical - generally speaking. Understated in their appearance. Not showy. And besides, they're just cooler looking anyway; worn by cooler people... 😎 (I might be an exception to that rule though! Ha!)
I love each of my Omega's for different reasons. All of them have stories and memories. They're worth way more to me - _two in particular: a 1970 Seamaster, and a 1968 Speedmaster_ - than their financial value. Those two would be the first things I'd grab if my house was burning down. (I don't have kids!)
Rolex, inferior quality aside (!), is a watchmaker I shan't be investing in, nor would I choose to wear. They're OK, but not for me. 👍

      Mr Carrera
Absolutely agree. Both companies have made wonderful timepieces and I appreciate both. What does “best” mean? If it’s solely a matter of precision we would have stopped buying mechanical watches when the quartz watches came😊

I had 2 Omega Seamaster automatic watches. Both of them were fast by about a minute a week...When I asked a dealer about fixing that,He said, why would you want to fix that. That’s pretty good

Those Omega watches, when properly tuned should be at around +4 or -5 second per day.
