My favourite Mercedes Benz car of all time ❤😅. The Overengineered Tank . The India specific model didn't have Traction control but on the other hand they did get higher ground clearance than German counterparts for dealing with Indian road conditions back then which were not so great. Anyway when GM was making inroads in India they decided to do it with Opel Astra and markteted it as a poor man's Mercedes Benz E class in 1996 but most importantly when the Astra was in its testing phase in 1995 they finetuned the suspension to take roads like W124 did and the Astra did that well at this side of 10lakhs. Ford also did the same thing thing with ikon but they went one step further by taking the Hindustan Ambassador for research in UK as it had the most comfortable rear seats and they decided to take inspiration from W124 rear suspension as it had the most sophisticated suspension set-up at the rear 😅. That's also one of the reasons why i love W124 because Sedans back then in India didn't have great ride and handling balance with suspension set to give comfort to rear passengers, not even the Esteem or cielo in 1995 ; forget about the Ambassador, Padmini , 118ne or Contessa . The W124 set the benchmark for it and thats why Indians look for good ride and handling balance in Sedans or hatchbacks . Mercedes Benz W124 has to be given credited for that ❤🤌🙌. Please do a Gone but forgotten story on Opel Astra . Honorable mentions would be for the Sipani Rover Montego as this was the 1st indian car with Turbo diesel engine 2l Turbo diesel in 1991-92 which made 90hp back then . I know it's the rarest of the rare car and will be very difficult to find but if you do please make a Gone but not forgotten on that car also.
You're right, the Opel Astra ... and after that even the Corsa... had fantastic ride. Will do a GBNF on it! As for the Montego... such a hard car to locate
@@sirishch Thank you 😊, About the Montego , I totally get it. It's in the history books now I.e. old car magazines now. There used to be a old abandoned showroom in Mumbai which had a few Rover montegos lying down in Basement parking but they were destroyed in 26th July 2005 Mumbai floods due to heavy rains 🌧. I don't remember the name of the place where but it did exist in Mumbai. They had to scrap those unsold Rover montego cars later on as they were damaged beyond repair.
The first luxury car I ever sat in was a pre facelift W124 300D import. I was so smitten that I told myself that I had to buy one for myself at some point. It took over 25 years to actually own one and finally 4 years ago I bought myself a pre facelift 300D import :) Legendary cars like these actually make ones life journey worth all the ups and downs.
What an amazing episode @evoIndia ! Being from Delhi, I saw my first Mercedes when I was 4-5 years old in mid 1990's, and I still remember that it had 'HEADLIGHT WIPERS'! Please shed the light, if you can, on what I might have seen then? And thank you for the wonderful nostalgia! ❤👍
The W124 also had headlight wipers in higher trims internationally. Quite possibly was a kit imported and installed on one here, or an import model altogether.
Absolutely loved the presentation by Sirish as always, I wonder to what extent Mercedes Benz meant when they said after upgrading the tyres they could unlock the whole potential of the car? Kudos to evo India team for such a wonderful series of gone but not forgotten!

Just half a line about the Manual Transmission? Is that all, Sirish? I guess that's the norm, these days. It's sad, really sad, that in most automotive videos, motoring journalists don't even mention the word Manual anymore. They just drive the top of the line automatic for their reviews. I'm sure you could've mentioned more than just "heal and toe, it takes you back to simpler times..."

Especially good in that EVO guise! ;)
I can never forget that Car & Bike mag cover ❤ I was 12, I guess
Oh those sweet memories, seeing one on magazine covers and then on the streets!
I was also around that age!
Make a video on Tata Sumo. Eagerly waiting for it.
As soon as possible Siddhesh! Thanks for the suggestion. Please do stay tuned.
Yup, in the pipeline
Can Opel Astra be next?
We shall surely try, if not next, in the near future.
Yes!
Nice down the lane piece. Where can I get such a T-shirt?
We want safari dicor ❤❤
There's a video on the Safari generations on the evo India channel
Perfect car 🤩💥😁🙌
Amen! No wonder so many enthusiasts still want one in their garage!
Thanks for choosing this car
Glad you loved the video!
@@evoIndia your gone but not forgotten category is unavoidable . It evokes that quality of nostalgia that many similar presentations fail to do so .
I am gonna buy this soon. ❤️
Hey Avi, we wish for your dream to come true soon! We would love to see a photo when you get it.
You will love it
I saw this car in black colour near my office one day.
And what were your thoughts Anubhabh?
@@evoIndia it was sadly having a flat battery so 3 people were towing it . Two men pushed from behind while another pulled the vehicle and operated the steering wheel from the front. I first of got intrigued by the old vehicle then came across this video later. And oh boy was I surprised! Its freaking 2024 and that vehicle dint have any sign of old age! The owner must have applied some anti ageing cream on it 😉
