- 30 years ago, Mercedes-Benz India began their operations with the W124 E-Class. The W124 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is known for its legendary build quality, and it's evident in the condition most of these 124s are even today. The W124 E-Class brought in many firsts in India - the first car to have dual airbags, the first car to have all four discs, the first car to have seatbelt pre-tensioners and many more. But all of that came at a price -- ₹22 lakh including options. To put it in perspective, the Maruti 800 was then priced around ₹2.5 lakh. The W124 was one of the most luxurious cars available in India. It was sold with several engine options, and its ride quality was impeccable. Still is by today's standards. Editor Sirish Chandran takes us through the history of Mercedes Benz India, and explains why the W124 is the best car in the world, in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten.

Which car should we cover in the next episode of Gone But Not Forgotten?
Maruthi Esteem or Hyundai Accent (CRDI)
Omni, lancer, pajero😊❤
Santro!
2011 Toyota Corolla Altis D4D
toyota innova !
Loved making this video. Hope you guys enjoy it
Sirish… you are an absolute rockstar. One of the doyens of the Indian Auto Journalism scene. Ive been reading auto mags since they were priced at Rs 15 and back then, it was a significant debt to my pocket money allowance. But it allowed me a chance to drool and dream…Thank you and look forward to more epic content in the future
Great 👍🏼well Explained 😍... I own one W124 E250 D
Nice video, this Hagerty - Jason Cammisa format works well
"Gone but not Forgotten" series is a way for these classics to "Reclaim" their glory, in the sea of new modern cars.
A lot!
One of the most underrated Automobile channel in India!! Just love the content from you guys! Keep up guys ❤
Thank you so much for those kind words Aman! We are truly grateful for the love and support you guys have been showering us with. Humbled.
Thank you
Always my favorite channel. Especially Siri Bro❤️
@@evoIndia @sirishch Is it possible, by any chance, that we make a video on the 118 NE, 138 NE and all the HM Contessas? All of them were RWD and pseudo Muscle, the Contessa, and the NE was more comfortable than the Ambi, since I had one back in my college days.
@@aromal_rajan_pillai Thanks!
Another gem from Sirish… truly well delivered in his signature style…
Thank you Prem!
Thank you!
Bruno Saco Masterpiece....The class apart episode..thnks sir...!!
He was a genius for sure!
Glad to hear you loved the episode Ketan!
Gone but not forgotten Is literally the best car episode, which I like as it brings back a whole bunch of nostalgia to me but I haven't thought that EVO INDIA would bring back a new episode this soon
Haha! We won't wanna keep you guys waiting for long! We know how much you guys love the series, and we really thank you for that!
Sirish, your "Gone but not Forgotten" series is iconic. Your passion, knowledge, and enthusiasm make it truly special. Your videos are well-researched, and as a car enthusiast, I eagerly look forward to them. Regarding the Mercedes W124, it stands out as one of the best Mercedes ever made, boasting solid engineering in an era before cars became heavily reliant on electronics. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the kind words
The fact is Every Episode of Gone but Not Forgotten feature the 🚗 cars which are my favourites...be it a Maruti 800/Zen/Indica/Nano/Swift & now the Mercedes.
I mean how on earth a person is bringing back memories of Car enthusiasts like this...I wonder why this channel doesn't have million of subscribers...❤
We wonder why too 🤣
Why does this have such low numbers? Gone but not forgotten is virtually the most informative and entertaining series from an automotive channel in india.
You can always share this with your friends! Would definitely help us a lot!
My favourite Mercedes Benz car of all time ❤😅. The Overengineered Tank . The India specific model didn't have Traction control but on the other hand they did get higher ground clearance than German counterparts for dealing with Indian road conditions back then which were not so great.
Anyway when GM was making inroads in India they decided to do it with Opel Astra and markteted it as a poor man's Mercedes Benz E class in 1996 but most importantly when the Astra was in its testing phase in 1995 they finetuned the suspension to take roads like W124 did and the Astra did that well at this side of 10lakhs. Ford also did the same thing thing with ikon but they went one step further by taking the Hindustan Ambassador for research in UK as it had the most comfortable rear seats and they decided to take inspiration from W124 rear suspension as it had the most sophisticated suspension set-up at the rear 😅.
That's also one of the reasons why i love W124 because Sedans back then in India didn't have great ride and handling balance with suspension set to give comfort to rear passengers, not even the Esteem or cielo in 1995 ; forget about the Ambassador, Padmini , 118ne or Contessa . The W124 set the benchmark for it and thats why Indians look for good ride and handling balance in Sedans or hatchbacks . Mercedes Benz W124 has to be given credited for that ❤🤌🙌.
Please do a Gone but forgotten story on Opel Astra .
Honorable mentions would be for the Sipani Rover Montego as this was the 1st indian car with Turbo diesel engine 2l Turbo diesel in 1991-92 which made 90hp back then . I know it's the rarest of the rare car and will be very difficult to find but if you do please make a Gone but not forgotten on that car also.
Thank you for sharing those wonderful facts!
@@evoIndia You are welcome 😊 🙌
You're right, the Opel Astra ... and after that even the Corsa... had fantastic ride. Will do a GBNF on it! As for the Montego... such a hard car to locate
@@sirishch Thank you 😊, About the Montego , I totally get it. It's in the history books now I.e. old car magazines now. There used to be a old abandoned showroom in Mumbai which had a few Rover montegos lying down in Basement parking but they were destroyed in 26th July 2005 Mumbai floods due to heavy rains 🌧. I don't remember the name of the place where but it did exist in Mumbai. They had to scrap those unsold Rover montego cars later on as they were damaged beyond repair.
One more video made straight out of the heart and not just typical boring data.. Getting both the owners of India's first W124 was a treat (and it should be a part of the thumbnail!)
So glad that we had a W124 in our family for 7 years! This has to be the best W124 Indian video on TH-cam!
Thank you so much for those kind words!
Thank you!
My first love in the luxury car category. I still have the Auto India copy of the E250 D test drive. Thanks Sirish. Brought back many sweet memories of my teenage.
Oh that's epic! Glad you loved it!

So many interesting things we unearthed in this video!

I am proud to be among the first sales person for this legend of a car. In fact I learnt to drive on the W124 !
Super, Sirish! Loved the old pictures of Sanjay Automobiles!
Thank you so much Ajay!
Wish daddy had taken some pics of all of them with the Mercs....
Absolutely loved the presentation by Sirish as always, I wonder to what extent Mercedes Benz meant when they said after upgrading the tyres they could unlock the whole potential of the car? Kudos to evo India team for such a wonderful series of gone but not forgotten!
Thank you so much Kartik! The whole team sends their love! :)
It was just an ECU flash to deliver the full euro-spec power and torque. Though that said it was also detuned to account for poor Indian fuel quality back then
Gone but not forgotten videos are one of those very few videos seeing the notification of which makes you feel good 😊
Thank you Chinmoy
@@evoIndia you're welcome
So kind of you
The first luxury car I ever sat in was a pre facelift W124 300D import. I was so smitten that I told myself that I had to buy one for myself at some point. It took over 25 years to actually own one and finally 4 years ago I bought myself a pre facelift 300D import :) Legendary cars like these actually make ones life journey worth all the ups and downs.
Such a heartfelt story! Thank you for sharing with us Chetan! We wish you many more happy miles with your 300D!
And it's those emotions, going back to our childhood, that makes ownership that much sweeter
I would really like to see a video about the superb or the old baleno sedan or the esteem
Thanks for the suggestion Karl! We'll try to make videos on those.
The station wagon too

Thanks for the beautiful presentation of this beautiful machine, Mr. Sirish.

What an amazing episode @evoIndia !
Being from Delhi, I saw my first Mercedes when I was 4-5 years old in mid 1990's, and I still remember that it had 'HEADLIGHT WIPERS'!
The most amazing memory I had about Mercedes till date, this side of McLaren SLR.
It was definitely 4 door, although I don't know what model it might have been. Please shed the light, if you can, on what I might have seen then? And thank you for the wonderful nostalgia! ❤👍
The W124 also had headlight wipers in higher trims internationally. Quite possibly was a kit imported and installed on one here, or an import model altogether.
Must have been an SL
So nice & secure of you to not hesitate even a bit to refer & qoute your seniors like Adil sir & Hormazd sir. ❤
I grew up reading the magazines they edited and have massive respect for them
Loved this video the best one in this series for sure.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you Dakshak!

Haha! These old W124s are workhorses in many countries!
Classics evo India video as always ❤
Thank you, and there's more coming!
An icon. This is the W124. ❤
100%
I think all petrolheads from India owe a debt of gratitude to Mercedes Benz. They brought the European automobile sophistication and luxury to the country before anyone else.
That's one of way of looking at it! No wonder so many enthusiasts want one, isn't it?
true that
Being a child of the 2000s, my w124 moment was the e90 bmw but I guess it's still a bit too early for that. I'd also love an episode on standard motors (my dad learned to drive in a Herald) or one of the pre-protectionism American cars (Impala etc) that used to run around here for a while.
There are some plans we are working on Nandakrisha! ;)
Super hard to locate a Standard 2000
