  • The Central Business District, commonly called Johannesburg CBD, is one of the main business centres of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the most dense collection of skyscrapers in Africa, however due to white flight and urban blight, many of the buildings are unoccupied as tenants have left for more secure locations in the Northern Suburbs, in particular Sandton and Rosebank.

Some blocks are looking really nice like around Bank City. Also the Innes Chambers building looks completely renovated. Still you can see how one block can be well maintained and the next block can be a mess. The 80s architecture on the Smal Street Mall and by the old Joburg Sun is so fascinating to see in today's context.

And Johannesburg had to deal with sidewalk sales. This is a sidewalk, it is available for pedestrians, not to sell things. If you come to Canada or Australia, you won't see them on the sidewalk, as the municipality has clearly imposed penalties.

    • @Awholekit

🤔 first of all why are you bitching about how they do business?
In the counties you mentioned some people swipe groceries or flip burgers for life and never come up (yeah they are slaves to a system where the rich get richer and the poor remain poor).....at least give some respect for the entrepreneurial spirit!!!
It wouldn't surprise me if a large percentage of shop owners had a humble start on the street there.....it probably just part of the growth process.
Street vending is legal in los Angeles California where I live ....but we had to fight for the right.
Also your not really free to make your own life if someone is imposing penalties....it's not like it's a good thing to be bosses around and confined to limited options.
Personally I like the way it looks... mainly because I see freedom and personal ambition (and possibly a deal for the buyer), where all you can see is low end shopping.
Life is a matter of perspective...just thought I would share mine.

It not about Apartheid, it's about the lack of respect for a Country that had World Class infrastructure, Jo'burg a World Class City . No Pride from it's residents . The attitude of residents who expect everything for free, who accept that it's OK to relieve themselves in the street , butcher livestock in the street around Ellis Park. Attack & Rob fellow residents in broad daylight. We should be an example for the rest of Africa but mismanaged, corruption, have turned our inner cities into litter filled slums. Why can't the unemployed be put to use in crews to clean up our cities , informal settlements and make us proud again.
