Finally something about poster colors. I use them a lot in my work and since they’re not really popular here i don’t see anybody using/talking about them. Thank you for the video!
Yea me too I use it but the only problem if I search a tutorial from poster colors it always is acrylic and water color thats why I said Me: why is it always acrylic and watercolor thats why I want to buy acrylic paint cuz I think its a very nice brand of paint cuz most artist use it
for me its basically the same... I mean, what will you do with the piece after you finish it? keep it until you forget it... as long as you can practice with it and mass produce it then its good to go. LOL
All of the Indian population has grown up using poster colours since we first started using paints😄 and this video made me finally understand the difference between gouache and poster colours ❤️
I'm back covering a commonly asked question about the difference between all these different paints! I really hope this will answer most of your questions! What would you like to see me covering in this series next? Comment down below!
Do u have any ideas on how to paint without overworking the paper?? I mess up and overwork the paper, causing it to look weird and paper starts wearing away. HELP, SOMEBODY!!!
I am obsessed with watercolors .They are my absolute favourites.I love the effects we can get from them.I tried gouache but didn't like them as much as I love those effects which we can get from watercolor which make it a unique and my absolute favourite medium to work with
I loooovvvveeee watercolour so much. I've tried poster colour before but it's too thick and i have to mix it with some water. I still use white poster colour for highlights, because they are cheaper compare to a tube of white gouache.
I use both watercolor and poster color, which has been a great experience. One day i was really bored and my urge to draw hit me, so i started simple, doing still life with pencil ( because i had drawing pencils lying around). I do watercolors too, but it's a tricky medium to control ( in my opinion) and it requires a lot of planning to use, though the results won't disappoint. After i ran out of water color paper, i started switching back to drawing with pencil. But after searching around my house ( i was too lazy to go out and buy some watercolor paper), i found a set of poster colors lying around. Though i can't exactly remember when/why i bought them ( most likely it was for school ), i tried it nonetheless. I use to remember how when i was young, poster was my go to option because of the accessibility ( and because it was the only thing my parents bought). Painting with poster once again, has opened my eyes. I find that poster is an easy medium to control because of the opacity and size of the pigments, it makes it easy to cover up mistakes and you won't have to think ( and worry ) as much. Another plus is that it works on sketchbook paper ( so i don't have to run to the store to buy watercolor paper). It's good for leisure art but would not recommend it for things like commission art. Also, mixing a bit of poster into your watercolors makes it look more opaque and make the subject you are painting with it stand out amongst that more transparent watercolor. I did it once for flowers, mixing some poster color white with purple. The result was wonderful.
The first ever paints i bought were poster paints.😄 They were super cheap and came in only 6 colours so i had to mix each colour by myself, this helped me to understand mixing of different colours.
I love watercolors. I know it needs practice but i just love the results. So neat, so beautiful when you look at it you really feel the hard work you put in there.
That's great to know because I was given poster paint and never used it because I thought it was only used for lettering...Now I'm going to give it a try for a painting...so thanks very much for that info..😍😘
i’ve been wondering about poster colors as well, since i used them back in hs whenever i thought using acrylic was too expensive for the project/assignment
I am using poster colours for 3 - 4 months now. They are cheap and available here easily.. and I am painting portraits with them and I am quite happy 😄
I started off using Poster Colors for painting but the set that was given to me as a gift ended up being crappy quality, but I didn't know it at the time. Then I tried watercolors and found that it works great with my art. I recently got interested in more opaque paints like gouache and poster paints and while they're much better to work with for my art, I still have some difficulties with it. It might be because the number of watercolor 101s on TH-cam is greater than the number of 101s on the other two mediums. So I've been having some trouble of figuring out my own process, since the two mediums can be used in a variety of ways, for example, going in thick and opaque straight away or doing thin washes and slowly layering. They're unlike watercolor where it's a definite rule to go from light to dark and to work in layers.
I like gouache the most. But they are all fun to work with. Maybe a video about how to prep your work, how to set up everything for a painting? I have only seen ONE video about that, and we all have different preferenses how to do, what to prepare and so on. Thanks Mako! ❤️
i’ve been watching a lot of Studio Ghibli background painter vids, and majority of these artists use Poster Colors. i’m glad to know they’re cheaper too haha
It's very easy to understand three different characteristics.^^ 've used watercolors and poster paints, but I haven't used any pastures. I think it's easy to use the transparency and the opaque weight of the gouache.
So happy you’re back! I know the basic differences between watercolour and gouache but never tried to get deep into it. And I have never used poster color only heard of them. My favorite medium is gouache and watercolour when I have the mood I will paint with either of them.

Loved this, and learned a lot. Thank you! If you've not done this before, a video of you working with watercolor and gauche on a painting, or in a series (like the four paintings on one sheet) would be cool! I don't know how well the two would work together in the same painting, I'm very new to watercolor and I don't have any gauche yet to test it and play with both mediums.
It's so so informative. Thank you. The gouache that I use is SO cheap and low quality tho that when I tried sakura or pentel poster color it felt like using the most amazing and expensive paints on the planet haha so I always thought poster was higher quality before
I mainly use gouache and a little bit of water colors sometimes. I then use white poster colors for highlights and the metallic poster colors for accents because they're cheaper

poster paints are the stuff i used to use as a kid when i knew 0 stuff about painting lol, such an informative video! thanks ♡

I thought Gouache and Poster paint where the same but with a different name like Tempera 😅
We call poster paint Tempera in italian! It's obviously not the egg based tempera they used in the past, but we kept the name
Ohhhh so that is what Tempera colours are! They were the only paints we would use in school
I actually thought poster paint is considered as watercolour paints so I use it for gradient washes and it just dried up quickly
same.

The only thing i would precise is that usually poster paint are not opaque as much as Artist grade designer gouache cuz more diluted and they change more tone from wet to dry .. i think in the video you said something different also poster paint use glues and other synthetic binders not only Arabic Gum .
Poster paint are on average like a cheap version of gouache used for work that need to be re-printed / scanned and not displayed as they are . They are not made to be light-fast that it's the biggest difference also a lot of things depend on the brand of paint you are using.
In reality in fact you find quite high quality poster paints made by Nicker / Sakura that are "acceptably" light-fast .
The colors are usually not tested with the standard ASTM but if you avoid to use too much purples / violet / rose are pretty safe and will last for long time .
They are also very opaque as you said but winsor and newton designer gouche is even more opaque and dense .. poster paint have a honey consistency.
Also the price can be very high outside from Japan . A set of 18 colors by nicker in Japan is around 7000 yen (50 euros ) in my country they reach even 150 200 euro (160 dollars) for the same set.
