Tarptent Dipole 1 Li. Is this finally my perfect ultralight tent?

- So this has been a long, very expensive journey for me trying to find the perfect ultralight backpacking tent option. I’ve tried lots of tents from some great manufacturers, and while a lot of them were really great tents… for one reason or another they just didn’t do it for me. With my upcoming 100 mile section hike of the Superior Hiking Trail, i thought this would be the perfect excuse to try another tent that I’ve always had my eye on. We are in a place right now where there are so many great companies out there, it can be hard to choose. This is the second tent from Tarptent I have owned, and while this is really just my initial impressions of the tent, I’m already feeling like I might have finally found the perfect tent for me! Great review! I have a big Agness blackbird for car camping and my Durston 1 p for when I’m hiking on the SHT. I’ll be section hiking around Lutsen June. Thanks for another great video!

I’ll be out thru hiking the sht soon, maybe I’ll see you on trail. The sht catches a lot of people by surprise with the lack of switchbacks and steep ascents. Worth every mile though. Good luck out there, enjoy MN!

Nice walkaround of the Dipole, cheers. Have you had it out in any weather yet? Wondering how it handles the wind compared to the X-Mid. Looks pretty solid with all the lines staked out.
Not yet, but I plan on getting it out tomorrow on a trip! It feels very solid for sure.
Im seeing a lot showing the dipole being superior in wind.
What’s been your experience with the end windows with driving rain and high winds? I just got the Dipole 1p!
I have the 2P and really like it. I have had the tops of 4 of my stakes come off though so I've replaced them.
This tent has grown on me for sure. I really love it!
Just go for Groundhog pegs and suck up the weight. They do a long one for structural guys, and a short one for lightness. Indestructible and seem to work in most kinds of ground. Have never let me down.
Looks like this was posted about five months ago. How did it go this summer on your superior trip? Specifically did you encounter any big winds or rain? If so, how did it do? Any regrets?
Nice! Everyone raves about this tent minus the vestibule space. I wonder how it does in high winds. I saw where someone had to stake out the struts for the tent to be more wind worthy.
I haven’t tested it yet, but it seems very sturdy with the peak guy lines out like I had in the video. And yes, the vestibules are smaller, but on the 1p model it really doesn’t matter since there are two of them. Plenty of room for the pack and shoes on one side, and cooking on the other. The 2p might be a different story in that regard.
@@Beardedbackpacker Swings and roundabouts - keeps the footprint small, and as you say, do you really need huge vestibules on a 1 person shelter?
Great video. I'm in search of a lighter and simpler alternative to my Nemo Hornet 2p. Looking at both the Durston 1 Pro and the Dipole Li and so appreciated your comparison comments. I'm leaning towards this tent. Can the poles be inserted handle up? I don't like the idea of my trekking pole handles in the dirt and available for critters to nibble on in the night.... Wondering what your thoughts were after some use out in the field!
The dipole is made to be tip up. But you might be able to flip them. I’ve had a couple tents that way and never had any issues with critters chewing on the handles. But I know it is a concern. Very hard to pick a winner out of those two tents. I will say… I sold the dipole and stuck with the Durston. A little bit simpler to get the perfect pitch for me, and more vestibule storage.
@Beardedbackpacker Thx for the reply! I typically like to store stuff inside, so was leaning towards the Dipole because it's wider at the ends. Which one does better on condensation?
@@TheHikingChick1 the dipole is probably a bit better against condensation due to those vents on the end. As long as you set it up so you can keep them open some lol.
Which tent did you end up getting? I have a the Xmid Pro 1 but looking at getting the Dipole 1 Li.
@AussieBeachBum I purchased the dipole li one person. Haven't used it yet (just set up once in the backyard) so don't have a lot of feedback for you but first look is 👍.
How did you end up liking the tent?
It is an amazing tent. I ended up selling it to a buddy who gets out a lot more than I do. As you can see by the lack of videos, I didn’t get out much at all over the summer lol.

That’s what the silpoly piece on the inside is for. You can pull it up with the toggle to close them off. Then it is completely covered!
@@Beardedbackpacker maybe post an update if you use the tent in windy wet weather, those covers don’t look like they would stop wind driven rain from getting in. Thanks for your video!
@@RacerXSeattle I will for sure. You can pull them up and lock them in place with the toggle on a slider. It’s the same design as the Aeon which I have used in wind and rain, and the covers do there job. They were wet, but nothing got in. I’ll be sure to get it on video when it happens though!
I don’t get why a one person ultralight tent would require two vestibules.
Helps with views and ventilation, while extra storage and access are bonuses!
