    I’ve have had the regular original 2-P for a few years and love it. Purchased the 1P solid and was just informed it has shipped. Can’t wait. Simple, solid and no fiddling.
    The only thing I didn’t like was the tips-up design for poles. I added the Tarptent handle adapters so I pitch tips-down. I don’t like my handles getting dirty and I hang things from the wrist straps.

    I just bought this tent. Like you, I have been through every tent, shelter, and tarp that's out there over many years of backpacking. We bought the 2p version Durston for an annual 2-week trek across Scotland but sold that in a week, luckily we still had our old faithful to fall back on for the trip - the asymmetric design screwed with my wife's autistic head. Fortunately, on many levels, I don't have that issue. Great, honest review which has reinforced my buying decision. And the shock-cord ties on the inner - Nah!

    Good review, I own the tent. The tie backs for the mesh really aren’t that bad to be honest.

  • @MoonShadow74
    @MoonShadow74 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Like you, I was totally flummoxed by the bungie cords on the netting. Once I figured out that Durston didn't forget a toggle, I was OK with it. I also knew the tent only came with the four ti stakes and the two shepherd's hooks for the doors, I just went out and got four nore ti stakes to complete the security system. I also opted for the Solid Wall version with two net "windows" as the areas I am most likely to use this tent can be quite windy. All The Time. The price was right and they were available so I pulled the trigger and now I have something that fits in my pack better and is much lighter. I really have no complaints.

    Great review. I have the 2nd gen 2p version, basically everything’s the same. I don’t mind the bug net ties because I never tie them anyways. My biggest gripe is the loop on the bathtub floor that goes around the trekking pole handle. It’s super hard to stretch it around the handle, and once it’s on, it rides up the handle. But that’s the only thing I don’t care for.

    • @Beardedbackpacker
      @Beardedbackpacker  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @durstongear
      @durstongear ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We updated the pole handle connection sometime in 2022 so there is a strap that goes under the handle so it doesn't ride up, but you do have to guide that bottom strap to the right spot. The shockcord won't fit all handles, but you could grab some spare shockcord and tie bigger loops.

      I’ve had zero issues. I’ve also owned the Altaplex. I prefer the xmid. It really doesn’t take up much more space than the Altaplex and it feels roomier with all the vestibule space on both sides. Interior space is about the same honestly, since the Altaplex has the sloping back wall.

  • @patrickdolan.
    @patrickdolan. 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The reason they don't include more stakes and that there's not a toggle on screen is so they can be under 2 pounds and keep that ninch in advertising. A 1p tent over 2 pounds isnt really ultralight

    There are many great things about this tent, but the best for me, in use, is the ease of pitch.
    It pitches in an instant with 4 stakes necessary and the floor always covered, so in rain it is ideal. I cannot explain how much this means on a bad day on a tough hike.
    If you're in the suck, this is a savior feature.

    Solid video. As a note on trekking pole tent setup that no one (not even the manufacturers) really acknowledge, is that you don't build it from the ground up like a traditional pole tent, but instead you're setting the ridge line and hanging the tent, and yes, this is the case even though you stake it first. I've found the best method for most any trekking pole tent (and this one is much easier than most) is to allow plenty of slack in the guy lines, with the guy lines extended a good bit, but where the stake placement is ~45 degrees off the corners. This lets you set the height of your peaks without much regard for the ground irregularities. That means you can set the ridgeline or peak height and then set the fly distance from the ground so it's closest at the highest point of the ground and furthest at the lowest point. That makes for a strong, taut pitch.
    I don't use the tip-up method; I just use the handle up and find it actually makes for a better pitch. You just have to use baskets (even very small ones) on the poles so they don't sink into the ground.
    For the peak guy lines; tie those off to the corners (the small section of the vestibule doors). They increase stability a very significant amount and it stops the guy lines from flapping around.

I've accumulated so many with other tents that i didn't need any more, and being able to drop the price that little bit by opting out of them was good for me. The Lunar Solo is also silpoly (mine is a 2021) I think they have been doing it in silpoly for a few years, but it is single wall. X-mid looks like a nice tent and I like the double wall and the roomy vestibules. It also looks like you need a large spot to set it up. Sometimes here in the north east (on AT) you have to squeeze into some small spots. The lunar solo has a lot of floor space and I can bring my pack inside with me and spread my stuff out inside but the walls slope up to the pole so sitting up you need to be close to the pole or you are touching the walls. I use 8 stakes,6 for tent and 2 for pull outs 1 at head and 1 foot. Weights 26oz. without stakes or trekking poles.

    Is the groundsheet included or would one need to have an additional one? Also, does any trekking pole suffice or is it a specific one? Thanks!

      So it does not come with a ground sheet. The floor seems sturdy enough as long as you are smart about clearing away debris. I primarily camp in wooded areas so it’s not a huge concern. If I was in the desert, or around a lot of rocky terrain, that might be different. I believe Durston sells ground sheets as well. As for the poles, mine are just my regular adjustable hiking poles. Usually they are adjusted between 120 and 125cm on this tent and they are perfect. Hope that helps!

    I’m with you mate.
    Bought one shipped to Europe which makes it a hell of a lot more cash with taxes etc …
    But even then it was less than some other rigs I have.
    The thing is the perfect “what you actually need to be comfortable” option and so well built
    As you say, “Jack of all trades” but right where it needs to be without even trying to compete with grams etc … the weight difference is nothing anyway and the living you get for it is stunning.
    All the way with you on “if you camp and don’t have one, just get one” (especially if in the US.
    No brainier of the century really.
    Great review thanks
