Replacing The Thermostat On Our 2006 Buick Lacrosse

  • Replacing the thermostat in our 06 Buick Lacrosse turned out to be a very easy job. I was expecting it to take a lot longer because in most newer vehicles you have to remove a lot of shielding and sometimes other parts to get to the part you want to replace.
    NOTE: NEVER work on a car until the engine has cooled down. Never work on the cooling system with a hot engine. Severe burns or death could result.
    Be prepared to mop up all spills and dispose of used fluid in a safe and legal manner.
    In this case I did not need any tools to remove the shroud on top of the engine so I could better replace the thermostat.
    I had to find a 10 mm socket for the job plus an extension for my socket wrench. That was the only thing I needed.
    I removed the two screws from the thermostat housing and the housing came right up in my hands. Removing the old thermostat and gasket took a minute because they were corroded on.
    I then cleaned the surfaces of the thermostat housing and engine before putting in the new thermostat and gasket.
    You have to insert the thermostat into the gasket and then put both together into the engine. Then put the housing back in place and tighten the screws down.
    Be careful with aluminum engines so you dont cross thread the bolts in and strip the threads.
    Then I put the shroud back on.
    Next is to check the radiator fluid level and top it off if needed. You may need to bleed your system to get any air out of the lines.
    This was a very easy do it yourself job.

    You are not done you have to bleed the air out of the cooling system. That's what that little screw is on top of the thermostat housing. Loosen it up a little bit and let the engine run until air stops coming out

      Please refill with coolant. You were obviously low or you would have lost coolant when removing the housing.👍

      I have worse trouble I now know. The system is plugged with gunk. Looking at a new radiator now. Probably the original coolant in the engine. Its a wonder it still runs. This was our backup car someone gave us until the Olds died a couple months ago. Now we are fixing this car up as our daily driver.

      @@TheDoItYourselfWorld Buy a bottle of radiator flush and follow the directions. It's acid based and will clean everything out real good.

    i have done my 2006 alure since new 3.8 i never ever used bleeder screw and i aways lost a bit of fluid when i took the Thermostat out not like this youtube so no air gets in system you might get a bit but it always fixed it self and i always made sure fluid in none air tight overflow bottle always had perfect heat ect

    This engine family is notoriously hard to bleed the cooling system of air. You may get enough water in to keep it from running hot or reading the water temp at the gauge but the top of the head will have air in it (not good) and heater core will have issues. Sometimes the heater wont put out "good" heat (100F+), (80F and peeters out in sub 20f winter when you think it is good and bled) until it is full. There is a process to using the (2) bleeder valves but I had a 05 monte carlo that I couldn't get bled by the book ended up parking it on 45 degree incline and only using the bleeder at the thermostat also incorporated some throttle blipping and reving to pulsate water from the pump to the heater core and air from the heater core to get it bled properly. DO NOT ASSUME YOU HAVE IT BLED OVER A LITTLE WARM AIR FROM THE CORE! In decent weather it is easily missed and I have no idea how bad it is for that air to cavitate in the top of the head it isn't a risk worth taking.

    Show completion of job including adding coolant and bleeding system. Any hoses or tubing blocking easy access to front thermostat bolt should be moved aside so you can avoid chance of cross threading by using socket extension at an angle. Flushing of system and filling with new “water” should be done and then monitored. A beginner following these instructions could cause some self some real problems. Please take a look at some of the other videos regarding changing thermostat before you attempt it.

    Those bolts are to be tightened to 15 ft-lbs.

      Hell most cars now days every small bolt on a car is 10mm. Equivalent to the 1/2 wrench back in the day. Can never find a 10mm or 1/2 cause seems like you always lose them.☺️

    Fluids change and little maintenance goes a long way and prevents exactly that...

      Yes well, the car was given to us and we are slowly fixing it up. Its a good car, just need some love and care. Remember we were driving the Olds all winter till it broke down on us. This was our backup.

    Do you have to drain the coolant? Or can you get away with not?

      He didn't have any coolant in there friend otherwise it would have spurted out when he took the housing off. So unless you want a burn smell, drain the coolant

      It’s never a bad thing to add extra explanation and detail about how the job was done. Teachers that assume that other people know exactly how or what they’re doing, are the issue. This person I think did a pretty good job as a DIY car mechanic.

    Vent hole on thermostat points to highest spot.. yes it matters how it goes in

    No your not done guarantee there air bubbles in the coolant system

    I just replaced my thermostat and gasket and filled the dexcool. Will the check engine light eventually reset itself? It's still on.

      Often you must reset the check engine light yourself or have a mechanic do it for you. Removing the battery for a while and connecting it again will also reset the computer in most cases.

      10mm for the thermostat housing. 9/32 for the bleeder valve on top of the thermostat housing.

      of course not. That little piece of rubber cost only 10 cents to make but is sold for $8.00. You will think it should be included with the thermostats but is not.

    has that car had the upper intake gasket done yet the 3800 r known for the upper intake gasket failing an the upper plume will leak coolent in into the intake an run rough

      No idea. Got it free with over 180k miles on it. Been running well for us. No oil in water and no water in oil.

    Don't say it's easy, simple etc when you've made no mention of the jiggle on your thermostat. Most go in at 12 o'clock, some are 6 o'clock and then there are others. Depends on your brand. Either way, you did this all wrong.

    Next time remove the air intake line and those vacumn lines. You would've had a easier time taking out that thermosat housing. Were your bolts DAT tight after you were done. Any you got it changed and it will go another 13 years or when Michelle drives you crazy around the Homestead. Remember to be patient when trying to show her how to drive.
