    I was in Montenegro many times as a tourists. One of the highlights was hiring a kayak in Rijeka Crnojevića and kayaking down the Crnojevića river which look like the Amazon rivber. Lots of wildlife and the water was perfect warm for a swim. The Durmitor National Park is also fantastic and the Tara River Canyon located there is the second deepest in Europe. I took the train from Belgrade, Serbia to Bar, Montenegro and didn't know that the Belgrade-Bar railway line is one of the most spectacular railway lines in Europe. So high up in the mountains and all the tunels and crazy bridges. It felt like riding a train in an old western movie. That's why I visited the country multiple times. So much to see, so much to do in such a relatively small country.

    Gabe, you should definitely take your rental to Plužine and use that as your base to visit Durmitor National Park. Inland Montenegro is easily the most underrated part of the former Yugoslavia so I’m glad you’re going!
    Also, what the apartment owner was probably trying to tell you is that he speaks the Montenegrin dialect of what is essentially the same language (but with different names for political reasons), Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian. The Montenegrin dialect is closest to Serbian, and they use both the Cyrillic and Latin scripts, like in Serbia.

    33 euros for that plate is a massive rip off btw. That's worse than Stockholm tourist prices.
    EDIT: Read some comments on Reddit and everyone seems to agree that this part of Europe(including Croatia) has just become way too expensive over the last few years. Like a guy had been going there for 18 years and won't be returning now because of the prices.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      It has definitely gotten more expensive, but important to keep in mind that the two beers were 5 euros each and the Greek salad was 8 euros. So the plate of food was just 15 euros, which is pretty reasonable. But you can certainly find cheaper prices in more local areas.

    • @apscoradiales
      @apscoradiales 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Croatia has become impossibly expensive on the coast.
      Go inland a bit, and the picture changes somewhat.
      Greedy people, basically.
      Restaurants on the coast are open only during the tourist season; May to September. After that they're closed until next year.
      So, they want to earn in a few months what others earn in a year.
      Then, they complain that there is not enough tourists in the off season.
      Stupid!!!

      As for the languages in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, the Serbian language was modernized by taking words from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially from Montenegro. This was done by Vuk Karadzic for Austria-Hungary, which had both Croats and Serbs in its empire.,,
      The language of the slavic subjects of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was called Serbo-Croatian .Since the Montenegrio were not in that country, no one asked them. They spoke their native Montenegrin in their country, and the most important work of the Montenegrin poet demanded to be translated into Serbian because they did not understand anything... When Yugoslavia came, first and second, the issue of language remained a monopoly of these two peoples, the Croats and the Serbs... However, at the beginning of the nineties, all the countries of the former Yugoslavia began to call the languages of their countries because the variations of the language of the South Slavs are definitely separate languages.Over time, the languages got closer because it is a living form, so it seems that originally they are not from different roots ... The thing is that people understand each other but they don't speak like that in their environment....... They have increased the fund of words, they know what they mean, but they don't use those words...also among all the peoples of this area, for one thing there are at least 5-6 other names for the same thing.....Likewise, the people of the territory of the former Yugoslavia is not of Slavic origin, they are natives before Rome, but they were linguistically assimilated from the Slavs ... The most extensive genetic research of the population of Montenegro conducted in Houston gave the following results.
      Origin from the first Europeans, 23,000 years and more - 35 percent of the population, the second is the African haplo group -25 percent,
      in third place are the proto-Celts, and only then the Slavs with only 8 percent. Such a situation is also in Dalmatia, Bosnia...

    Yes, Macedonian (of North Macedonia, not Greece) is basically the same as Bulgarian, and Montenegrin is basically the same as Serbian (plus Croatian and Bosnian, these 4, Serbian, Montenegrin, Croatian and Bosnian are all basically the same). Slovenian is similar to but still not the same as certain local dialects of northern Croatia (not the standard language). There you have the languages of former Yugoslavia in a nutshell!

    • @Ojstra
      @Ojstra 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This is true. And because in Yugoslav times Serbo-Croatian language was preferred and was the most popular in media all across the country (it still is on some radio music channels), this language is understood in any ex-Yugoslav country nowadays. On the other hand, other South Slavic people have some problems to fully understand Slovenian but Macedonian is fully understood by Bulgarians and vice-versa.

      @@Ojstra The Serbo-Croatian language died with the death of the old Federal Yugoslavia. The Serbs never published a single book in Serbian before the 19th century that is why they wanted to include the Croatian language & literary history. Croatians on the other hand aren't interested in the Serbian language as most Croats especially the younger ones can't read Cyrillic.

    • @Ojstra
      @Ojstra 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@TheSouth-j7f, the linguistic idea of Serbo-Croatian language (or Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian, BCMS) is not dead yet. For instance, on Wikipedia: It is a pluricentric language with four mutually intelligible standard varieties, namely Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin. And as I also speak this language (although my mother tongue is Slovenian) and have been to all these countries and communicated with local people there, I can confirm that all these 4 now called languages are in reality dialects of only one language. It is all in politics in this language division, just like Romanian-Moldovan once.

I was in Marrakech earlier this year and needed to get to Casablanca - I found a day tour and the company had no problem. As of alphabet ... After parting from Serbia in 2006, Montenegrins use to prioritize the Latin alphabet although Cyrillic alphabet is also equal in status under the Constitution of Montenegro and the Montenegrin language can be written in both alphabets. However, there are still some Serbian Orthodox places (like Ostrog Monastery) where (Serbian) Cyrillic is priroritized and there are still many Montenegrin citizens that declare themselves as Serbs (29% of total population in the 2011 census). When it was referendum on Montenegrin independence in 2006, only 55,5% of voters were for independence (which was only slightly higher than required 55%).
    As of Cyrillic alphabets ... Russian alphabet has 33 different letters, Montenegrin 32 and Serbian 30. Many of letters are the same but not all.

    So Gyros is always mispronounced. The ‘g’ is ‘yeh’ so it’s ‘yeh’-‘ros’. The word means ‘to turn’ in Greek and of course the meat turns on vertical spits. If you really want to get technical, it’s origin is from Constantinople Turkey where they would grill stacked meat like lamb but let’s just keep it Greek

      I was in Sydney and saw a restaurant that was called "Yeeros", spelled like that. I thought it was pretty cool that they named the restaurant how you phonetically pronounce gyros. Although perhaps they should have called it "Yeerdos", which would be slightly more accurate. Looks like you're right, they originated in the Ottoman empire in the 19th century. But I don't remember seeing gyros in Turkey.

      @@GabrielTravelerVideos It's a project of Serbian nationalist agenda to make new churches and claim they're old so they can spread their pan-serbian influence to neighboring countries. One of the reasons Montenegro declared independence from Serbia was to try and shake off this malign influence. But as you will probably notice, there's still plenty of Serb influence in Montenegrin towns, the more inland you go. If you end up in Cetinje, you will find the haven of true Montenegrin culture, so I totally recommend going to that town and talk to some of the locals.
