- Makybe Diva is regarded as one of Australian racing's greatest racehorses after she became the first horse to win three Melbourne Cups (2003, 2004 & 2005) at Flemington Racecourse.
Australia's star mare also boasts a Cox Plate, Sydney Cup, Memsie Stakes and The BMW among her Group 1 haul.
Racecaller Greg Miles summed it up best with his call of Makybe Diva's record-breaking third Melbourne Cup, "But a champion, becomes a legend."

Best stayer we have ever seen and ever will see in Australia. Everyone knows how hard it is just to get into three Melbourne Cups, but to then win three of them is unsurpassable.

The Kentucky Derby is a race for 3 year olds mate, you can only have the one crack at it.
What an amazing horse
Remember being in primary school watching her race each time. Always been my favourite because of it. Someone's got to win but it's a long race in a big field and she just, each time everything went right for her.
I always watched the Cup. With Mum or Dad, or both (after Dad retired). I didn't love horse racing (still don't really) but Dad did, so I watched for him. I know exactly where I was for each of these. Oh boy, for the third, I remember screaming at the TV screen with so much energy & passion...by the time the Diva had saluted, I was standing in my loungeroom, tears rolling down my face as if she were mine & my own child was the jockey who'd taken her to victory. And Greg Miles the race caller, what an absolutely outstanding effort, he immortalised the Divas run. How did he call another race that day after this? Pure gold!
I was so emotional because I knew what I'd witnessed & with my parents now gone, I had experienced it alone. I still share it with them in my head though, I know my Father's cheeks would've swelled with joy.
None (for me) will ever beat this moment.
What a complete staying champion they could have put 65kgs on her back and she would have won. We will all be dead and gone but no horse ever will win 3 Cups in a row, same as WINX no horse will ever win 4 Cox Plates in a row. Glad I was alive to see these champions of racing.

This is a bit like Red Rum winning three Grand Nationals (not forgetting two seconds between the second and third victories), both amazing horses. Let's not forget that Makybe Diva also won the Cox Plate, Sydney Cup, Australian Cup, Turnbull stakes and others.
Yes the 1973 win by RR is well documented and we remember. Two times winner RR carried 10S 5LB whereas Crisp was penalised with 12S (since outlawed). Crisp had a 15+ length lead but naturally enough found that weight too much.
Makye had the best rail runs of all time perfection to watch....
I had goosebumps watching these. Having lived through each of those .. I actually got emotional .. what a horse.. but Boss’s riding was fantastic especially the 3rd one! Thank you for that video .. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Fake win- Makybe: 2015 Melbourne Cup. If you look at last the home straight, there is a yellow rider that waits for Makaybe to come up on the inside. The yellow rider pushes half the field to the outside to open up the home straight. The horse who placed second is part of the field that was pushed out to the side. This race was rigged.
Luke J , This is normally a comment from someone who backed the wrong horse, go look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself do you really think all those involved had awakened every morning normally around 4.30ish for many months with the agenda to win the Melbourne cup and then decided to rig the race! Really!!! Some advice don’t gamble if your can’t handle!

In 2002 I back her to win 4 races the last on Melbourne cup saturday in the G2 Q2 she won over the 2500 and I said to my father she will win next years Melb cup, Come 2003 and when she finished 4th in the caulfield cup I was sure she would win the cup , come melbourne cup day i was tipping everyone. I did quite well backing her, but never in my wildness dream would I have fort she could pull off 2 more Cup wins. Back I back her to win all three. Best staying mare ever , Winx best ever middle distance horse, Super imposed best Miler , Tulloch best 3 year old and I think Bernborough was the fastest horse ever, But the Diva was a freak

Boss's ride in the 2nd cup was one of the greatest of all time. She had no right to win from there.

Red Cadeaux was paid a huge tribute by being buried at Flemington and deservedly so.

If the jockey had kept following Makybe Diva he probably would have won, but he decided to swing out wide. This is the difference between a great ride and a shocker. I'm glad I didn't own it, I would have been spewing.
Man, that horse that finished 2nd in the last race was twice as fast closing. Came all the way from the back on the stretch run and still nearly caught diva. Had the jockey had the horse just a few spots from the rear, that horse would have won with ease. Jockeys fault.
Hahaha I remember this! I backed On A Juene (the one that ran a flying second). I was screaming my lungs out but it was meant to be for the diva.
It's easy for the uninitiated to see a horse flooding home at the end and mistake it as a certainty beaten
@@bgardiner3354 I disagree ..........but one position back or forward, one run early or late, you jump at the gate, you go back or forward ...........just remember, track was watered at the insistence of Lee Freedman .............at the end of the day, she won, but she started three times in Japan and never ran a placing !!!!!!
@@gregorykillen4564 Makybe Diva only raced twice in Japan. Nowadays it is very difficult for Australia horses to travel to Japan. Not like the days when Horlicks and Better Loosen Up went there. Japanese tracks are also lightning fast... Makybe Diva was clearly better with more give on the track. She was clearly not at her best... but not a mile off. With the exception of Ireland the best stayers in the world are bred in Japan.

I picked her three months out to win her first MLB cup and never got off her after that she was unlucky not to win the Caulfield cup

They all lost millions on the third one. At least half of Australia was on her @ 3.00 to win.

Excuse me, but Phar Lap was forced to carry 10.10 or almost 64 kg!!! He first won it at 58.5kg! He was only on the planet for 5 and a half years! His record as a 4 year old will NEVER be beaten.
Rising fast carried 59.5kg in 1954 then carried 63.5kg when an unlucky 2nd with the winner carrying 48kg over 15kg difference.

If you do the conversions Phar Lap actually carried 62.6 kg when he won, which is not the heaviest handicap for a Melbourne Cup winner but not far away from the heaviest. Carbine won carrying 66 kg. Phar Lap was handicapped the following year for 68 kg, which still remains the record highest handicap weight for the cup. He still managed a creditable 8th.

the melbourne cup is a handicap; often the best horse does not win it. carbine's performance is often considered to be the best performance in the history of the race as he gave so much weight away and still won; nowadays the quality of the best stayers even in the UK as measured by ratings has fallen dramatically as horses are more and more bred for speed, not stamina.
Phar Lap would have won 3, or more had he not been penalised so much
retired far too early was only starting to come into her own , even the trainer stated a few years ago he made a mistake .

Every Melbourne Cup is 24 horses
In 1980/81 Just a Dash won the Cup with 50/51kg and was given 59.5 the following year.
After winning 2 in a row Makybe Diva carried 58 in her 3rd attempt.
Things changed quite a bit in 20 years.
It's not really a handicap these days.

El Gran Senor weight in and of itself is not relevant. The weight difference is what matters. Gone are they days where you would get half a dozen 3yo’s into the race on the minimum weight. The weight range is far more contracted... it’s absolutely still a handicap... in all senses of the term. It’s just that the quality is much higher since it was opened up to the Internationals. Makybe Diva carried 55.5 in ‘04... only 7 horses have carried that much weight to win since 1980. As for her 3rd win... Add in the distaff allowance and the weight is staggering. Only Think Big has carried more weight since we started measuring in Kg’s! Remember who she gave weight to in 05... she was easily the best stayer in the world in her day. IMO winning 3 cups far outweighs 3 Arcs or 4 Cox Plates.

Most other winners get bigger weight rises for winning one than she got for winning two.
