  • Federal officials say they have determined that there are no serious safety risks after thousands of people reported that sunroofs were exploding in their vehicles. Regulators have closed their investigation into these explosions, but people who have experienced this told Channel 2 consumer investigator Justin Gray that it sounds and feels like an explosion in their vehicles.

I've literally witnessed someone's rear view window on their truck explode a few years ago. The truck was a few years old, plus very well kept. The owner happened to place personal items in the back seat, then close the door with minimal force. After closing the rear door, the glas exploded inward as if it was hit with an object. Since I was standing next to the owner, we were both trying to figure out what in the world caused that window to just blow up. With this report, I now know that many people have ended up in their own episode of the X Files 😂!

There are pressure relief vents that are supposed to ventilate air pressure changes when you close/open the doors and hatch.
If one of those vents failed and stuck shut (there might be only one depending on the model vehicle), then the air pressure change from closing it can bust the glass.
One common cause is squirrels that have found that ventilation duct and filled it with nuts or whatever, no joke.
Edit: Such pressure relief vents are most often hidden behind carpet in the trunk/hatch area, you won't be able to see them without pulling up the carpet.

Word of caution. Putting window tint on a sunroof will increase the likelihood of the glass exploding. Brand new cars often come with window tint from the dealer. A good window tinter will tell you about this risk. It is especially more likely in hot places like Texas. I have my panoramic sunroof tinted. Both cars. No problems. But, I was told of the risk by my tint guy. On the safe side, sunroofs are tempered glass, so the falling glass will be pea-sized pieces that will not cut you. You may have to change your underwear, but you won't have to go to the hospital.

I’ve been around the window tinting business for over 30 years. One of the safest features of window tinting is the fact that because the tint is a solid vinyl piece of film, it actually stops or slows shattered glass from falling into vehicles, unless the film was punctured. I’m not sure why the window tinter told you that. Maybe I’m misunderstanding you or I’m missing something.

My assumption would be since the tint is adhered to the window, as it heats in the sun it could gradually shrink. That could put stress and pressure on the window, couple that with the fact your vehicle interior is either hotter or cooler than the air outside. Heat causes expansion in most objects, while cold makes things contract. Also when glass is tempered it creates pressure inside the glass on a molecular level, which is why when it breaks it shatters into a million pieces rather than a few big chunks. Also most sun roofs have a curvature to them, and run/sit on tracks exposing it to more vibration than something like your windshield.
All in all it's just a lot of different variables to factor in. I haul glass as a truck driver, all sorts of different types, some raw, some coated, some tempered, some glazed. Glass can be quite fickle to deal with.

According to a shop owner - "...there are other reasons sunroofs might shatter, such as a small rocks or pieces of debris that can chip the glass. If the glass is tempered, sudden changes in temperature can cause the glass to expand and contract and cause the chip or crack to grow or shatter completely". This makes sense. 🤔

My thoughts exactly. A few years back, my side panel on my pc that was tempered glass exploded about 10 minutes after I got done playing a game that was pushing the system pretty hard. The inside of the case would get up to 50c then suddenly cool down to 15c after I got done, that process repeated over the span of just a year was enough to cause that explosion.

    • @MoveoverAndbark
      @MoveoverAndbark ปีที่แล้ว

Making sense is true, but responsibility is something that needs to be stressed. Look if the glass does crack and I'm sure it does...then maybe the design and quality of the sunroofs needs to be addressed....yeah, I had a front windshield in my 2014 VW start to crack, I believe it was from frame stress from a previous accident and the temperature (it was cold and I used my heater on high)....speaking about small rocks or debris causes chipping, the paints for auto bodes being used since "Save the environment" started/with clear coat....I feel are much more brittle and prone to chipping....

there is enough flex in the whole sunroof assembly to keep up with any roof flex and still keep the glass from being in enough of a bind to shatter. my guess :sun baking it on one side and ac cooling it on the other and a chinese glass formula. btw, vehicle bodies flex and twist constantly. that's why unibodies are welded with spot welds away from the edges and not solid beads. the sheetmetal would tear at joints just from driving.

I used to work in the automotive glass industry It is not uncommon for tempered glass to explode on it's own it is under pressure from the manufacturing process. It is heated to a high temperature and then the surface quickly cooled with a blast of cold air. Then allowed to cool normally this creates stress in the glass with the outer surface being in a state of compression the interior is in a state of tension. Any stress on the outside of the glass such as a small object striking it or the glass becoming too hot can blow it up.

I may be an extreme but I think sunroof on cars is a total stupid idea. After a few years, the Rubber seal is going to fail and it will start leaking when the drain pipes are clogged. The ones without the cover are going to let the sun come in and distract the driver. Some even complained about headaches with the sunlight constantly getting into your eyes from any flat reflective surface inside the car. Having the glass as the car roof also decreases the structural rigidity, which could be a safety issue in rollover accidents. It costs more and most people don't use it when it's there. My first car had a sunroof and none of the cars I got after that had it because I realize how much I hate having a piece of glass on top of my head while I'm driving.

Simple solution to prevent exploding panoramic sunroofs, is to simply get a car without the panoramic sunroof. I tried to get a new Rav4 and they told me that it comes with the sunroof and I told them to find me one without it and they found one and i got it. According to my research, it has to do with the type of glass that they are using. Tempered glass is the problem. Tesla uses laminated glass on their sunroofs and they don't have that problem. They need to force the manufacturers to use laminated glass so they won't have those problems anymore!

Its defective glass causing the sudden “explosion”. Im an auto glass technician and it is rare but it happens typically in very hot weather. But, for this many vehicles for this to happen the glass manufacturer should reimburse the car manufacturer and do a recall considering its a safety’s related issue…..
Also, if your insurance doesn’t pick up the bill its VERY expensive for the panoramic glass just FYI. Which probably explains why they determined it “wasn’t a safety related issue” as in someone got paid under the table.

This happened to me TODAY! I had no idea this had been occurring and have started my research into it just in the past few minutes.
To characterize this experience as 'frightening' is badly understated. I was traveling in moderately heavy afternoon traffic in the late afternoon just before rush hour. I was in the left lane. My sunroof was tilted up, not slid fully open. While following traffic there was an extremely loud explosion that I felt when it happened. I was immediately shocked and began to quickly inventory my car not knowing if I had been struck by another vehicle or what had happened. For all I knew, I had been hit multiple times, knocked out and something beyond the initial explosion had ensued that I was not conscious for, and was lying in wait for EMS reliving this experience in my mind. But I determined that my car was driving fine, no smoke, no impacts that I could see, no check engine light - I was still driving along though I had coasted to a much slower speed than what is normal for the left lane. It was probably 30-45 seconds when I noticed that there was glass scattered all throughout my car, in the seats, the floorboard, the center console, and on me. There were a couple of small shards that had lodged into the underside of my right forearm where I rest it in the center. This is tempered glass so we're not talking shards like a broken mirror. But even tempered glass will break the skin. I finally realized that this was my sunroof that had shattered and I thought that something had struck my car roof breaking the sunroof but I would have seen an object coming that caused this type of damage and I did not. The explosion of the glass formed a near perfect rectangular hole in the sunroof and all other glass was shattered end to end.
I filed a claim with my auto insurance, took my car directly to the dealership, and left it there. Glass continued to fall in on me in bits and chunks as I drove. I was certain not to lower the sunroof or operate the sunroof in any way to prevent glass in the track causing further issue. I have a rental now and it appears that a replacement glass is all that will be needed for my repair. And a thorough vacuuming of my car from front to back. When I returned home, the grocery sacks that I had with me after leaving the store prior to the incident had broken glass in them as did the bag that I typically carry over my shoulder containing my license, credit cards, documents, etc.
I hope this is a once in a lifetime. I could go a lifetime very content never having this experience again.
I love having a sunroof but I may reconsider them when I purchase future vehicles.

I retired after working 38 years for an auto glass manufacturer. Spontaneous explosion of any tempered piece of glass is most likely caused by thermal “vents” that occur when the glass exits the bending furnace and enters the tempering “quench”. If the air pressure being blasted onto the sunroof, side window or backlight is not set at the correct amount of force and length of time then thermal vents can occur in the glass. Once installed in the car the vibration coming from the car going down the road….or heat from the sun on the outside of the glass and cool air from the a/c on the inside can cause these “stress fractures” to open up causing the tempered window to shatter. This is the glass manufacturer’s worst nightmare and the car companies will charge them for removing and replacing these windows in all the affected vehicles. They may also sue them for the loss of consumer confidence in their vehicles due to the glass manufacturer’s negligence.

  • @robertking3090

That’s why a car that’s a hardtop is so much better. Plus, a hardtop protects you more from the elements.

My car does not have a sunroof. Although I do like them, I don't want to have water in my car.

TH-cam fails by not having a standard volume setting for the videos , this news station could use a good sound guy , one who actually isn't deaf and listens to the output . I do find it very annoying when I can't hear a video because the source can't figure out how to adjust their source volume on TH-cam . TH-cam should simply make a standard and all videos should start at that same volume , but nope , we get this . Got more of my attention than some first world issues with Sun roofs.

If my sunroof exploded, I would be deleting the sunroof entirely with a delete panel.

I had a car years ago and a starling decided it liked dropping pebbles on car windshields while they drove by. Two times that bird messed up my windshield and then I stopped driving down that street. People don’t realize that a tiny pebble of quartz can completely destroy a window.
