I am a 150% Agnes / Endora (Moorehead) fan!!!!! She 💜's her daughter, and she's right, no one should have to supress who they are just because a few people can't handle it. 💜 you Ms. Moorehead!!⚘️

You're missing a key piece of information: Samantha _willingly_ placed herself in that position because she loved Darrin--no one twisted her arm--among other reasons. Sam was in her early adulthood and was curious about mortals, how they lived, and how they got by without magic.

I’m sorry, but Samantha was not curious about mortals. She was only interested in Darren, and he was the only mortal who kept her attention. Otherwise, she quite understood why witches had to maintain a secret identity. The show is more an analogy for Civil rights, which started almost exactly a year before the showdebuted on TV.
Darren was prejudiced against witches (although they certainly gave him reason enough to feel that way at times), even the ones he’d never met. And it never seemed to occur to him that they were witches, who had no interest in disturbing him or Samantha.
As for Samantha willingly placing herself in a relationship with the mortal, she had no way of knowing how intensely the Witches Council and other powerful dignitaries of the witch world would react to her marriage. She expected to have a normal marriage, but that didn’t happen. Don’t forget, has Samantha put it? This was one of the very first marriages of witch and mortal.
However, that was as much due to Darrin being very much a male chauvinist type of guy. So even if Samantha hadn’t had that particular kind of family, he was still an overbearing guy with traditional values about what the home should be like and the woman’s place in it. Exactly what women were trying to escape in the ‘60s.
I will simply say, Endora wasn’t wrong. Not all the time, anyway.

@@mcbrion1951 Everything past your first sentence has nothing to do with my comment, so I'm going to ignore all of that. As for her curiosity about mortals, fine, I was wrong. The salient point that she was willing still remains.

Darrin Stephens was a bigot and a fool. He was married to a practically immortal witch with godlike magical powers, and he expected her to abstain from using her powers, and live and work like a mortal housewife. I don't agree with everything that Endora did to him and thought about him, but I think that she was essentially correct in her assessment of Darrin.

When Darrin and Endora met the first time, Endora was perfect and Darrin was a cad. Jumped on her from the moment she entered. While Endora might have accepted Sam's choices she could and should not have to accept Darrin dismissal of who Sam was and the total lack of respect he showed to her. I have wonder if the writers were trying to deliver a message in the show. Endora was very measured in her interactions with Darrin and it was Darrin who came across as a jerk. I was 10 when the show came out so I probably did not see these points at the time. I guess an analogy today would be the daughter of a very independent, successful, educated and liberal woman brings home a MAGA to marry with the daughter telling her she wants to be a trad wife.

I never cared for Darrin . Endora knew who she was and was unapologetic about it and the brilliant Agnes Moorehead carries it out so beautifully.

This video was pretty spot on with its analysis. The gay community, from what I've read, could relate to Samantha having to "stay in the closet". The video makes the point, about the times then, women weren't shown in positions of power. However, some of Darrin's clients, were owners of businesses were women.
The video points out that Samantha's secret was necessary to protect her and her family. They also had Gladys Kravutz to deal with and her mother-in-law, in the episode SAMANTHA'S SECRET IS DISCOVERED. This episode is unique in the way that Sam resolved the issue. She converted tranquilizers into hallucinogenic pills, something that shows could never get away with, in the early 60s.
I see some comments that have been around for decades, redoing episodes, Sargent's Darrin was "nasty", etc.
Well, redoing episodes or doing episodes similar to prevous episodes started in season one. This continued through the York years, sometimes in the same season. Secondly, in the first two seasons, York's Darrin, with a couple of exceptions, was nice to Sam and generally didn't flip out when she used her witchcraft. That changed in seasons three thru five. For some reason, the writers wrote Darrin as freaking out, anytime Sam used witchcraft, even doing housework. York dick like the change.
Dick Sargent tried doing Darrin York's way. I don't think he liked it. He changed as season six progressed. He softened Darrin, by not freaking out. In early episodes, he raised his voice a couple of times, unlike York's Darrin.
Much of this change, i believe, was due to the changes in society, particularly the women's movement. BEWITCHED also had women writers.

Well, considering how nasty Dick Sargent's interpretation became, yes. It was symbolic of the 50s and 60s TV ideal: a man marries a woman for what she is, then demands that she suppress everything that attracted her to him. Hell, you married a woman who can get you EVERYTHING you ever wanted. LET her make you happy in her own way! Sure, don't let anyone ELSE know she's a witch, but that doesn't mean, privately, you couldn't have some fun.
After a while, I really started to believe that Endora is just against *_DARRIN_* more than the fact that her daughter married a mortal - with reason. Darrin is really such a killjoy, and he isn't always fun to be with. Endora's dislike of "Durwood" is palpable and understandable. Endora could have killed him in a moment if she really wanted to - she is an all-powerful witch, after all - but she just resorts to magic tricks and turning him into creatures. Oftentimes, she does so to teach Durwood a lesson or two. Considering that they refilmed more than a few Dick York episodes for Sargent, it's not as if Darrin is a good study.
Besides, several witches are seen to have relationships with mortals (Serena especially), and we don't hear Endora complaining about THAT. Endora may not like mortals, but I don't really see her as being particularly prejudiced against them. Mortals DO have their uses, after all. Nevertheless, few of the witches can really take Darrin for very long. Sam's father Maurice does more or less tolerate Darrin's existence, and some witches ARE willing to accept Darrin. But there's definitely no love lost with others in the witch world, except of course for Aunt Clara and Esmerelda, who are more scared of Darrin since they don't have the mastery over their powers that would have allowed THEM to teach him a lesson.
Larry Tate isn't much better, really. Larry's kind of a nasty fool, and Darrin kowtows to him at almost every opportunity. Maybe Sam DID make a big mistake, and Endora is just trying to convince her daughter - whom she clearly loves - of that mistake.
And anyway, I fully believe Sam would have divorced Darrin a few years after the series went off the air. There are SO many better options.

This was my favorite TV show when I was a little boy! And yes, I can really twitch my nose just like Samantha!!! I agree that Endora was right all along. I thought Samantha's attraction to Darrin made very little sense at all. I guess Samantha got bored with a life of endless magical adventure and unlimited occult power hence her decision to "go slumming" for a few decades while playing the role of an American suburban housewife. That's all well and good, but what about Samantha's supernatural offspring? Both children are witches! Tabitha is a witch, and toward the end of Season 8 we discover that Adam is a warlock. If Samantha wants to spend her days shopping and housekeeping, then great! That's her choice, but must Darrin and Samantha impose that same choice upon their children? Darrin often expresses his belief that when things are too easy, you just don't appreciate them. Samantha usually concurs. However, there are always times when a little magic would be quite beneficial! For example, you're walking down the street to discover that someone is stealing your car! The mortal solution is to call the police, but these days that often doesn't work out too well. the witchy solution is to transform the crooks into frogs!!! Great idea! What if your doctor tells you that you have cancer. The mortal approach includes chemotherapy, radiation treatments and of course surgery. None of this is pleasant at all. Endora's solution? Either contact Dr. Bombay the witch doctor or alternatively, cast a powerful spell that disintegrates and destroys all the cancer cells in a matter of microseconds! I vote for the second option! The writers of the show obviously wanted to cast a favorable light on "doing things the mortal way" or "hard way" but bottom line is life is already really hard! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could use magic or witchcraft to make our lives better and easier and longer? But then again...if Samantha hadn't married Darrin, then the TV show would never have existed! That was the whole basis for the TV series! Without that marriage, we never would have learned anything about Samantha or her supernatural culture.

@@scotia_angel Thanks so much! This is without doubt my all time favorite TV show from my childhood. I’m still kind of bummed out that Elizabeth Montgomery and William Asher cancelled the 9th season of the series. There were supposed to be 9 seasons, but they wrapped it up at the end of the 8th season. I read that one reason is because Bewitched was getting a lot of competition from the show, All In The Family.

@MathematicalCowboy no. Liz and dick were getting a divorce. Liz had an affair with one of the writers or something. They got a new producer and one day Liz was wearing dungerees and she bent to pick something up and the director said "I could look at that all day." Liz looked at Harry, I believe, and said, "he's got to go." Harry said "I can't do that, he's my friend." Liz says, "then the shows over!" I don't know where I heard that from, because I've seen so much of this stuff, but this is what I heard.

Tony Nelson didn't want Jeannie blinking him to the Moon ahead of everybody else either! (He thought that would be cheating!)
-although he did let her put a pool in his yard just long enough for him to go for a swim!
(In his position, I would have married her by about episode 3!)

That was Larry Hagman's position too. Had he had his way - and this wasn't a 60s TV series - the sexual tension between the two would have been resolved by Episode 2. 😝

      Think of the advantages!
My wife walks up to me and says "A pipe burst in the basement and there is a foot of water down there!"
-now (at the very minimum) my weekend is ruined!
Jeannie would walk up to Tony and say "A pipe burst in the basement, so I sopped up the water and replaced them all!
      -Go enjoy golf!"
Feel like driving a Ferrari? (-for an afternoon? -Jaguar tomorrow!)
      -she can deal with that!
Could be challenges though, being married to someone capable of Smiting You!
-If you really torque her off you just might burst into flames!

That took me into something's I had forgotten Myself.
I still declare, what matters is that she is Happy. I didn't fall in Love. I enjoyed everything about her.
Guess how many minutes I've been in her presence?
    Yeah. Only she would know.
I think you're right on time popping into my youtube.

Endora was also right when she said. "Samantha is what she is and that you cannot change". I think she would say the same thing to a man who thinks he can change into a woman. I'm gay or homosexual. Please don't refer to me as queer.

Good points! It's funny how the more powerful witches share this opinion whereas
the less powerful witches like Aunt Clara & Esmerelda who actually support Darrin.
