Elizabeth Montgomery was my crush of all crushes as a young boy. There are many beautiful starlets in this history of Hollywood, but none exceeded her. She was perfect.
I still prefer the first Darren Stevens (Dick York) on BEWITCHED, but because of his back injury years earlier ever worsening he had to leave the show. I am happy that at least there were five seasons of the show with Dick York in it.
Dick Sargent lacked the warmth , charm and self deprecating humor of Dick York, he played the role in a sarcastic, distant manner. But the show still worked because of the strength of the rest of the ensemble cast, Liz carried the show almost single handedly from the very first episode , and Agnes Moorhead provided a very solid support, and that was what allowed the show to continue and survive the Dick York departure. Of course by the last season it became obvious that everyone was losing enthusiasm for what had become stale.
Redoing scripts has nothing to do with the actors. That starts with the producers who decide to go forward with a script. But redoing scripts didn't start with the departure of Dick York, it happened during his time on the show. For example, the second season episode WHAT EVETY YOUNG MAN SHOULD and the fourth season episode IF THEY NEVER MET, both favorites, but "what if" episodes. It might have helped if they'd added additional writers to the staff. That cost money. I think Ed Jurist wrote many of the episodes, if not most of them.. Three final points. BEWITCHED had been picked up for another one or two years, depending on who you listen to, and, according to Bill Asher, the show had run its course with the advent of the changing TV landscape. But most importantly, Liz, along with some personal issues, had had enough and she wanted to move on. They offered her more money, but she turned it down. So it wasn't Dick York's leaving that ended the series, it was the person who was the "heart" of BEWITCHED that ended it. Liz then moved on to really show what talenti she had by working in more dramatic roles, many women centered. I say, be happy that we got eight fun years of a series that was so different from other shows of the time and is still loved generations later.
Yes Endora could whisk York onto a bed of nails and it seemed like York could somehow take it and it was funny. If Endora did the same to Sargent it seemed distressing which needless to say is not funny. York had truly immense comedic gifts. Perhaps Montgomery would have spoken candidly about Sargent after his death.

York had the hots for Montgomery and she didn’t like it but she put up with it because of York’s fine acting abilities. She was obviously glad he was gone but the audience wasn’t.
She is so false. Dick York was sacked at her insistence, as he was becoming as much of a star as her. There is a whole story there which is yet to emerge. She wielded a lot of power. Doesnt even mention him in this interview
I never saw the big deal about her...I liked the show but it was the entire cast that made it work. I'm not a guy so would not have been biased by her looks.
@Stranded NYer Agreed stranded. I saw the same interview and you are correct. I think York was a nice guy - but he created his own problems with his weird antics. I do not agree with Yorks behaviour. But it seems that he was a good man at heart. Of course, its only speculation as I did not know him personally. Some men are more SEXUAL than others. It does not neccessarily make them bad men. In the same way that some women who are more sexual than others are not necessarily bad women. Yorks problem was that he could CONTAIN his feelings in his own mind and he started to outwardly express them through his antics. Thats very unprofessional work and EM certainly hated that.
Sorry Duck Sargeant was no where close to the actor Dick York was! Are you kidding me? I won’t even watch the episodes after Dick York leaves. The magic goes with him! Wh was she trying to convince?
It was a smooth transition for HER but not for the audience. It was hard enough to try to accept a new Gladys Kravitz but even harder to accept a new Darren.
Also, Elisabeth didn't like Dick York wanted him fired off the show cause he was sick, sometimes drugged out or didn't show up he was in pain because of an accident he had earlier in his life I really liked Dick York better than Sargent.
Very disrespectful .Dick York gave it all he could for that show, enduring pain from his old back injury. Even if she didn't really like him ,the least she could've done was be professional about it and give him props for his work
It was nice to see Elizabeth Montgomery go full circle. I always thought there were two Elizabeth Montgomery's. The first five years gave us a funny and warm ingenue and character, whereas they allowed the turmoil of the 1970's to leak into the show. Samantha's personality changed, and she became combative, short tempered, and dare I say even slightly bitchy. She changed physically as well. The same applied for Elizabeth Montgomery in real life (watch a few Passwords and you will see what I mean). The truth is, our culture changed dramatically, and I think most would agree that the show went on probably two seasons too long.
@@ERstat77 You're right ... the look and feel of the show which I criticized started with the departure of York. Interesting how Liz was quick to defend Sargeant!
@@ERstat77 Liz Montgomery was a big proponent of "the gays", so maybe she was just partial to DS. But the thing is, she and Dick York were very tight too.
The ratings started dropping after season four. Remember, BEWITCHED was #2 behind BONANZA, in the first season, which had been on the air five for years,1969, after BEWITCHED came on in 1964. But there's one thing that Liz would never mention in public, her feelings for Dick York. She came to intensely dislike him, because of the way he made her feel uncomfortable. She wanted him released. However, she never brought her feelings to the set. On the other hand, she loved Dick Sargent as a dear friend. She expressed her feelings for him, upon learning of his death. Here's one who likes Sargent's Darrin. I find him to be more mature and more level headed than what Dick York's Darrin evolved into, a short tempered man. I blame the writers for that and the era. York didn't like it, either. Notice that Liz contradicts what some feel, that she was over it and just going through the motions. Remember, this interview was done around twenty years after season eight ended. She had time to think about her feelings about the series. You can see who Liz was as a person. She really enjoyed working on the series, especially due to the people around her. But when Alice Pierce expressed feelings to Liz, about how she looked, Liz showed her compassion. She and her husband Paul Davis became close with Liz and Bill. Paul Davis, In a 1968 interview, Davis said it was Liz who "saved my life". She helped him come out his depression over Alice's death. Note that Paul Davis directed some episodes in season three.
It was on TH-cam years ago, just an audio recording, and then disappeared I luckily saved it and thought it was a shame it wasn't on anymore. It's originally from a 1991 interview Elizabeth did for a laserdisc movie starring Robert Montgomery.
Elizabeth Montgomery is the most beautiful and attractive woman that I have ever seen. I was very attracted to her. I wanted her to be my wife. I used to think about what it would be like to hold her and kiss her every day. I wish that she would have felt the same way about me. She was like the sunshine, the blue ocean, and all the pretty flowers wrapped up in one. She is the prettiest woman in the whole world.
I want to ask all of you Dick Sargent haters a question. Have any of you read or seen an interview with Elizabeth Montgomery where she specifically singles Dick York out for praise individually? Oh, she had nothing but praise for the cast and crew as a whole. She loved BEWITCHED, but not to the exclusion of all else. On the other hand, she loved Dick Sargent as a friend. In 1992, she was asked why she was at the gay pride parade? She said, to paraphrase, for my buddy. That video is out here on TH-cam. BEWITCHED has been off the air in first run for almost fifty years. It is sad that some find the need to personally attack someone just because they didn't like the way he portrayed a TV character. Whether people prefer one actor over another, with their reasons, is fine with me. But please, stay out of the gutter. York and Sargent both were fine actors, but most of all, they were BOTH good people and generous, York was an advocate for the homeless and Sargent was a long-time supporter of the special olympics. Personally, I enjoyed both portrayals for different reasons. York's Darrin was more annimated and was there during the growth of the Stephen's marriage and the formative years of Tabitha. Dick Sargent's Darrin was less annimated and was there for the maturity of their marriage, for the continued maturity of Tabitha's powers and for the birth of their son Adam and the degelopment of his powers. But most importantly, for me, a kinder and more accepting of who Sam is AND something York's Darrin would never have accepted, an on call witch maid and sitter. Yes, York's Darrin accepted Aunt Clara, sort of, but he came to "accept" her, because even he realized she was bumbling, but sweet. I think that Elizabeth wouldn't care for some of the comments below. I say this because she hated tabloids like The Star and other tabloids who printed hurtful articles. She knew the Hollywood scene and didn't like it. She, l'm sure, knew some of the gossip columnists, too. Finally, as most know, Elizabth Montgomery was a very private person and as Herbie Pilato, her biigrapher, said in a couple of 2020 interviews, all Elizabeth wanted to be was a regular person. She was down to earth as are her three children. Check these interviews out on TH-cam. He wrote the first ever hook on BEWITCHED called THE BEWITCHED BOOK and it's current version BEWITCHED FOREVER and interviewed Elizabeth four times in the mid to late 80s for the books. He says that he was grateful that she let him "into her world". I suggest that, before people lob insults at someone, that they go and find out who Dick Sargent was, as a person. Try living a life that isn't your own for fear of retribution. How would people feel if society wouldn't let them mourn in public the death of their partner for twenty years. This is what Dick Sargent faced, fear and hate, except he didn't face that on BEWITCHED. The only one that showed him disrespect was Agnus Moorehead, because he wa the one who replaced Dick York. This brought out Liz's anger and she basically wouldn't let it go until Moorehead apologized, on the set. But she still felt hard against Sargent until season eight. Check out www.harpiesbizarre.com/index.html and the interviews with Sargent, Pilato, Liz, and others.
She rarely mentioned Dick York in interviews.Notice here she mentions by name supporting players but not the actor who played her husband for the first 4 or 5 years of the show .Even when given the opportunity to touch on Dick York,( his replacement Sargent)she doesn't even go there . You'd think she would have a little to say about him The poor man was a trooper for playing through excruciating back pain . His life ended in destitution because of his failing health, and according to York,he at one point tried calling EM later in his life but she never returned his call
I dont care if Elizabeth Montgomery wouldn't like the comments about Dick Sargent, it is the truth. The public audience is who they need to make happy and Dick Sargent was not it. He sucked! I NEVER watch the episodes with him! I have never spoken to one person who thought it worked with him. So the part of an easy transition is alot of BS
I really beg to disagree with Miss Montgomery, but Dick Sargent was just awful-no chemistry between his Darrin and Samantha at all. The show should have just ended when Dick York left.
I know Bill Asher worked on both shows and I Dream Of Jeannie used alot of the Bewitched sets, so they would have been around each other but I don't know about being Friends.
If you listen closely you can hear what she really thought about the other cast. Folks have to remember that she was also their boss. I was disappointed that she showed no empathy for York. He really made the show special. After he left the show was hollow.
Elizabeth Montgomery could not stand to be around Dick York. York would stare at her because he was in love but it just creeped out Elizabeth. She demanded that he be fired. The bad back excuse was a ruse! The truth hurts.
It speaks volumes that she says nothing about Dick York (only referring to his presence as "the situation"). Producer, William Froug, in a TH-cam interview contends, that while York's back had become a serious problem, the underlying cause of his departure from the show was Elizabeth Montgomery did not like him (Froug claims he had an unnatural infatuation of Montgomery, often lingering on the set when he wasn't required, making her uncomfortable). It's a shame too. To this day, if I see Dick Sargent's name and image at the head of the episode, I usually won't watch it. No offense to Sargent's abilities, but Dick York's brilliance overshadowed almost everyone else on the show. Similar to watching an Andy Griffith Show after Don Knotts left. The spark was gone.
Ah, the two Dicks...do you think the audience noticed? What great anecdotes and behind the scenes stuff...is there anymore? I liked the episodes where Darrin or Samantha got sent back in time...like to old Salem.
The first darrin was more into sam when they kissed .. he was always under her spell , a kiss would make everything ok .. and that came across the screen ..
@@ItIsJustJudy yes it shows ... but York was in love with her and that shown thru the screen , and it shows she’s a great actor cos she didn’t like him much , cos he was always fawning over her ..
Transitioning Darin’s was not smooth in the least for the audience. The second Darin did appear more docile however and nicer than the first Darin but he wasn’t suppose to be. The second Darin had no chemistry with Sams character and definitely not with the kids. He was not fatherly in the least!

From what I've read about DY, he had a lot of issues and quirks. EM was obviously over it.
Dick Seargent was terrible as Darrin. Dick York was just as much a star, as Liz was. The show was never the same for me.
I agree!
the both of you can blow that comment right out of your respective asses, as I have said before and will always say, when anything "Bewitched related" is posted on TH-cam, out come the "Sargent haters," like rats fleeing a sinking ship, both actors were EXCELLENT in their portrayals/interpretations, may they both RIP
@@gregrak9389 no Sargent wasn’t. He seemed to play him in a sinister way.
absolutely. It is as if to mention Dick York is a betrayal.. I COULD NOT STAND SEARGANT.. He just didnt have the same love that York had for Samanthat the same woman. It came off imho as forced. I did like him in other roles but he ds looked irritated or put out put upon
@@lisacassar7040 I agree 100% Liz Montgomery said kissing him was like kissing Hitler's sister. The guy was creepy.
She's very intelligent! Not much about Dick York. I thought he made the show.
No one I know liked Dick Sergeant's portrayal.
I finally realized who she sounds like; Gillian Anderson. They both sound eerily alike. Love them both
I lived through 2 Darrins , 911, corona virus.... I can take on anything.
She did a great impression of Agnes Moorehead.
And and even better impression of Marion Lorne. What a laid back and cool lady. Gone too soon.
Is there a part one? Would have loved to hear her talk about Dick York too. I am surprised the interviewer didn't ask her to describe him as well.
I have part one uploaded, but she is talking about her father.
@@ERstat77 sounds good. Thank you for letting me know. Huge fan of hers! She seems so down to earth and nice!
She obviously avoided discussing York.
Bad blood.
York had the hots for Montgomery and she didn’t like it but she put up with it because of York’s fine acting abilities. She was obviously glad he was gone but the audience wasn’t.
Who Wasn't In Love With This Beautiful Lady She Was The Greatest Actress Ever
She is so false. Dick York was sacked at her insistence, as he was becoming as much of a star as her. There is a whole story there which is yet to emerge. She wielded a lot of power. Doesnt even mention him in this interview
Right on.
I never saw the big deal about her...I liked the show but it was the entire cast that made it work. I'm not a guy so would not have been biased by her looks.
@Stranded NYer Agreed stranded.
@Stranded NYer So that's what happened, I heard that she couldn't stand him but didn't know why.
She never visited him or call him, never
Fantastic
Dick York was the best Darren. Stopped watching betwitch when York was replaced. Sargent just never had the same presence or performance as York.
What a nice human being. More aware than me.
She was a lovely human being on the inside and outside. I would be interested to know, more aware than you of what?
Sorry Duck Sargeant was no where close to the actor Dick York was! Are you kidding me? I won’t even watch the episodes after Dick York leaves. The magic goes with him! Wh was she trying to convince?
It was a smooth transition for HER but not for the audience. It was hard enough to try to accept a new Gladys Kravitz but even harder to accept a new Darren.
She was so lovely. I bet Bette adored her.
I found Sargent's Darren too remote, he didn't come across as a man in love with his wife more like a spectator.
Also, Elisabeth didn't like Dick York wanted him fired off the show cause he was sick, sometimes drugged out or didn't show up he was in pain because of an accident he had earlier in his life I really liked Dick York better than Sargent.
She doesn’t mention Dick York by name one time. Wow.
Very disrespectful .Dick York gave it all he could for that show, enduring pain from his old back injury.
Even if she didn't really like him ,the least she could've done was be professional about it and give him props for his work
If they weren’t friends, they weren’t friends
I definitely think they should have ended the show when Dick York left.
@@ERstat77 You're right ... the look and feel of the show which I criticized started with the departure of York. Interesting how Liz was quick to defend Sargeant!
@@Mike-fp5rc I think it's because she knew Dick Sargeant before. He was the original choice for Darrin but was unavailable.
@@ERstat77 Liz Montgomery was a big proponent of "the gays", so maybe she was just partial to DS. But the thing is, she and Dick York were very tight too.
Interesting she said she stopped shopping at blooming dales due to them selling ivory.. good for her and pointing it out
Has there ever, whether in tv or movies, been a couple with a more electric chemistry than York's Darren and Sam????
wellllllll - he freaked her out to death
The way she always avoids mentioning Dick York... Not the best memories of her, it seemed she hated the guy actually.
They got on really well, Dick York said so in later interviews. This is only part of the interview I have she may have mentioned him.
@@ERstat77 Actually Dick York said shortly before he died, that he and Liz never talked to each other after Bewitched ended
Thank you for uploading this phenomenal interview!
Where did you find this gem if you don't mind asking?
Awww - get in line buddy
We now learn from the Producer that Liz Montgomery wanted Dick York off the show. So the last minute of the interview is spin and BS.
I wondered if her and Barbara Eden were friends?
I know Bill Asher worked on both shows and I Dream Of Jeannie used alot of the Bewitched sets, so they would have been around each other but I don't know about being Friends.
They both are a lot a like. I was in love with both of them growing up.
No Barbara grated on Elizabeth's nerves
Sounds like she had a cold.
Who interviewed her and in what year????
Ronald Haver interviewed her in 1991. It was a special feature on laserdisc for her father's movie Here Comes Mr Jordan.
Didn't Bewitched premier in 1963
Bewitched premiered September 1964.
Ah, the two Dicks...do you think the audience noticed? What great anecdotes and behind the scenes stuff...is there anymore? I liked the episodes where Darrin or Samantha got sent back in time...like to old Salem.
What does disgusting pollyanna mean?
Pollyanna is a term that refers to a person who is positive and happy about everything. It's based on a character called Pollyanna.
Why doesn’t mention Aunt Clara or Uncle Arthur?
She does talk about Marion Lorne.
@@ERstat77 Oh. I didn’t hear that but not Paul
I actually liked Sargeant , my personal opinion
The first darrin was more into sam when they kissed .. he was always under her spell , a kiss would make everything ok .. and that came across the screen ..
Dick Sargent, the second Darrin, wasn’t into chicks.
@@ItIsJustJudy yes it shows ... but York was in love with her and that shown thru the screen , and it shows she’s a great actor cos she didn’t like him much , cos he was always fawning over her ..
Not a word from her about Dick York.
Ive always liked her. Here she sounds a bit too chipper, like she's put on a sunnier face.
Transitioning Darin’s was not smooth in the least for the audience. The second Darin did appear more docile however and nicer than the first Darin but he wasn’t suppose to be. The second Darin had no chemistry with Sams character and definitely not with the kids. He was not fatherly in the least!
I heard that she couldn't stand York I wonder why? Uk
apparently she didn't mind doing a turn for the boys....she never kept it to herself...but spread it around a bit
WTF does that mean?? Montgomery was a Lady, not known for a being a "flirt."
Talking from personal experience um?
Well if she did - she used what her's and you didn't get any!!!
