- Rarely interviewed, Agnes Moorehead is interviewed, but does not talk about her TV show, “Bewitched.” (Presumably at her request since it is so noticeably absent during the entire talk show interview). There is much NOT discussed in this rare interview, i.e., marriages, adopted son, etc.

Agnes passed away in 1974, and her mother was like 91 at the time. Mooreheads mother lived to be 106 when she passed in the early 1990's. Agnes was super talented.

Actually it’s the writing and directing that has gone down hill, not the acting. It’s the studios that don’t want to pay for intelligent filmmaking. Good screenwriting brings out the best acting.

She was the queen of character actresses.
Not any more. They're showing crap from the 80's and now. "Classic" means just that!! They need to leave TCM as classic (Ms. Moorehead, Crawford, Davis, Monroe, Hayward, etc. etc..) then make a channel for the new stuff (80's- rubbish.) Because that's what it is. Rubbish.. not "Classic." There is NO comparison!!

Agnes Moorehead, back in the 50s and 60s, used to take a train to our small town in Wisconsin and walk a few blocks from the train station to visit an old friend of hers -- AND NOBODY KNEW -- she was just able to blend right in.
Supposedly she knew Orson Welles as a young man In Wisconsin.

@@mylesburris3885 I don't know. I was young and in school at the time. My dad was in Radio back then, at the local radio station, and he told us about it. If he mentioned a name, I have totally forgotten. Also, he took a picture of a Cessna 310, at our local airport, with the N-number of 123MM. He said that it belonged to Walt Disney, and that he flew up there to also visit a friend. That friend I have no idea who that was either. Being in Radio, my dad had interviewed many well-known people, and for back then, he kept track of what was going on as best as he could. Not like today, with social media, the internet and TV coverage. It was a different world back then.
I LOVED her performance in "The Twilight Zone" where she performed the entire show without any dialogue. PHENOMENAL!
Oh yes! That episode featuring Agnes Moorehead is simply one of the all time classics! Once you've seen it, you never forget it.

She was ridiculously talented and her acting career was much bigger than Bewitched.
I've only seen one of her movies, 'The Bat', which was disappointing. Can you recommend a better one, I would love to see her in something good other than 'Bewitched'.
@@glamdolly30 She was a member of Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre Players; "The Invaders" on Twilight Zone, a classic. The warden in the definitive women's prison film, "Caged." That don't make stars like Ms. Moorehead anymore, and our Hollywood entertainment is inferior.
Magnificent Ambersons , just look for movies by Orson Wells. She has a very extensive movie career. Shes Citizen Kanes mom!

She always came across to me, as just being herself, not really acting.

I love Aggie! But it's no putdown to say that she's speaking with the tail-end of the mid-Atlantic "Posh" accent that Hollywood demanded in the 30s and 40s.
I was in such awe as a child to watch her and Agnes Moorehead still has me in awe. Total class.

He's got to meet and interview hundreds, if not thousands, of legendary celebrities from actors to musicians and in between over the last 50 years. He's still living at the time I wrote this on July 22, 2021.
“Citizen Kane”! Welles said she was the most talented actress he ever knew.
I didn't know that, but I do know that she was his favorite actress for several years. He cast her in several of his plays, radio shows and movies.
She spent her formative years in Ohio, Ms. Moorehead attended Muskingum University as did astronaut/ Senator John Glenn. A daughter of a preacher man, Agnes was very religious and a good soul.
Well everyone has their flaws. Religion doesn't make anyone particularly decent. It really makes some of them quite nasty.
@@zapkvr Yes, a lot of zealots are nasty. Like with most of our actions, much of it comes down to intent. Ms. Moorehead utilized her faith in order to be a better person, and to make for a better society. And there were rumors that she did some unorthodox things.

I was privileged to attend a talk given by this wonderful lady at the theater in downtown Dayton, OH in the mid-70's. She was spectacular and funny!!
We had an old family friend, Esther, who looked and sounded EXACTLY like "Endora," especially in the later "Bewitched" seasons when her hair was flat and parted on the side. Esther once went to visit a friend in a nursing home and all the patients screamed "LOOK, IT'S AGNES MOOREHEAD!" when she walked in!!
That's hilarious. We had a neighbor who looked exactly like Alice Pearce (the first Mrs. Gladys Kravitz) and ACTED just like her too.
We act like most people are classy today?
we talk about her stage work and her movie and television roles. But she has the very rarest of credit lists. Moorehead was an incredibly versatile and prolific radio actor. She was once hailed as the first lady of suspense appearing in Calvacade of America, Suspense Theater, Mercury Group theater, Campbell Playhouse etc. Despite being a contract player under MGM, Agnes was unique in that she insisted on a clause allowing her to continue to work in radio. It all shows in her acting style with perfect diction, and one of the most expressive , passionate and revealing of vocal virtuosity in any media. Not many can do more with a line or monologue than Moorehead. Nobody is ever going to have that kind of versatility in experience

She was a avid Bible reader according to Elizabeth Montgomery. Said Agnes brought her Bible to the set everyday.

Anne Liddle She was also in Magnificent Obsession with Rock Hudson and Jane Wyman. I THINK the three are in another movie together, where he plays a landscaper, Jane plays a wealthy woman and they fall in love.

@@jamesmonroe7406 Agnes was said to have hated Dick Sargent and apparently did not even try to hide it on set. She was also upset enough with the producers for forcing Dick York out that she made them cut her on-screen time and make her only a part-time player.
She was outstanding in Dark Passage a movie with Bogart and Bacall. I highly recommend it. Loved her

She’s an American and I just love her mid-Atlantic accent! I recall my grandmother sounding very proper like her. We hear very little of this accent now a days. Maybe watching (listening) to re-runs of Frasier with Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce.

I was going to comment on her mid-Atlantic accent. It's not as pronounced in this interview as it was when she was working on Bewitched. The accent seems to disappear and reappear again throughout the interview, it's very very interesting. I'm absolutely fascinated with the mid-Atlantic accent, and often wear it myself. Kelsey Grammer was a master of mid-Atlantic English, and pulled it off brilliantly for over 20 years with his Frasier character. The pronunciation seems so formal and out of place in American culture these days, but I still think it's beautiful. There are still a handful of people today who talk like that - maybe from upbringing, or maybe from schooling, who knows. I don't care why they speak that way, I just love it.
The mid-Atlantic accent was taught in drama schools and was standard for Hollywood in the old days. That is funny since, then even more than now, actors used many accents to portray characters.
Mule = Horse mother and donkey father. They are born sterile and can't reproduce. They are strong, hearty and devoted to a good owner. Great animals. Agnes was absolutely charming here - a dear lady!
Read an article decades ago about a rare few female mules who weren't sterile, and reproduced. The article was "Never Say Never"

"The Invaders" Twilight Zone episode from 1961. Doesn't speak a word, just acting. One of the better episodes, with a great twist at the end.
That is one of the very best episodes of the Twilight zone ever made.

@@usmale4915 Although I am old enough to have watched it prime time, I only started watching the Twilight Zone in the late 1960's when I was mature enough to handle the show. That episode flipped me out when I first saw it then, and it still hold up today. Timeless performance!

Wow. Amazing to think of "Endora" as a serious farmer AND a Beverly Hills socialite/movie star. Talk about polar opposite vocations! Cool, down to earth lady, and a great actress.
I was a bit surprised to see her not only looking and sounding like Endora but DRESSING like her as well. (Although Mr. Pintar did mention in his Bewitched video that some cast members often wore their own clothes when shooting the series).

My grandfather hated farms. He always said it's no fun living on a farm. When my grandma married him he owned two gas stations and a grocery store and two apartment buildings. But he absolutely hated farms with a passion. I think it may been negative childhood memories. Agnes Moorehead would have been fun to hang around.

Today - I’m preaching a Mother’s Day sermon and using her care for her mom as an illustration. She provided for her mom long after Agnes’ death.

I'm not sure why you feel she was underrated. She was not leading lady material due to her unconventional looks (she was striking and attractive, but not in the pretty-pretty, movie star way required back then). So in fact despite that setback, she enjoyed great success and fame.
It's a shame someone calling themselves 'Consrignrant' couldn't express a view here without descending into childish abuse. He just revealed himself to be a fool, with no class. Sad!

Worked with Orson Welles in the Mercury Theatre. She was in Citizen Kane, playing Kane’s mother when he was a boy.
Yes she was in numerous movies in the 40s and 50s. I've seen her on TMC. And she didn't look like Endora!
Underrated. Brilliant.
I remember my fourth grade class had a field trip to Rockefeller Center NBC studios. We toured many facilities one of which was an active recording of a a production with Agnes Moorehead in it. We watched behind a sound proofed glass wall as she was being attended by make up artists. She sat there very regal as they did their work. I saw the production on NBC later that week.
This aired in 1973. Sadly, she passed away the following year. 😓

What a sophisticated lady she was, besides being an extraordinary actress. Agnes Moorehead was so intelligent and one in a million. Thank you for sharing this interview. She seemed always intriguing to me and that, by itself, is so fascinating. A serious and consummate professional. There are no more Agnes Mooreheads in Hollywood, unfortunately.

@@utapao74 She was positively incredible. Whether "Durwood", "Darwin", or "Dum-dum" she played the domineering mother-in-law to perfection. Part of the charm was the fact that she INTENTIONALLY screwed up his name EVERY time. I think the show would confirm this, but I think Durwood was her favorite. I remember it more often, but there was always something else.
Agnes Morehead was a beautiful true Lady. She was extremely private and in rare interviews like this, she kept the conversation neutral. Her career left us with a plethora of fascinating movies. She will always be one of my most favorites.

I've always loved Endora. I could listen to her talk for hours. I was a big Bewitched fan back in the day. I was recently surprised to learn that at the time I started watching Bewitched Agnes Morehead was already deceased. I think the lady that first played the original Mrs.Kravitz and Aunt Clara were also dead as well.
I've aways loved her name. "Agnes Moorehead" sounds as distinguished and theatrical as "Ethel Barrymore."

I only know Agnes from Bewitched, though from researching her I understand that she had a long career, especially in theatre. I also learned she died from cancer at the relatively early age of 73 (early especially compared to her mom who died at 106, 16 years after her daughter!) because she was in the doomed cast of The Conqueror which was filmed close to nuclear trials resulting in many of the cast and crew dying from cancer including John Wayne, Susan Hayward and Agnes.
Wish there was more discussion about her work on Citizen Kane and on the Twilight Zone. She is most talented actress. I remember seeing her on an episode of The Rifleman. She always seems to play a completely different character - and I guess that's what makes her a good actress.

She was so much bigger as an actress than just Bewitched, she not even wanted to be part of it at first, but im glad she did, not only because Endora was the light of the party of that show, but also because made her character a tv pop icon bring new fans to check it out everything else she did

This would have been around the time that she toured with Gigi (around '72). I remember it clearly because I had the opportunity to meet her backstage briefly before she went on. A prized moment in my past.
Agnes Moorhead was born in 1900 and was in her late 60’s when this interview was done.
She talks about her parents, I’m just guessing they must have been born in the 1870’s
I did not realize she was that old at the time of this interview, she seemed much younger.
@@seththomas9105 her demeanor has a lot to do with that. She smiles and laughs a lot... which I think makes people look and feel younger.
Her mother died in 1990, so she was born in 1884?
@@hcombs0104 Molly was born in 1883 which made her 106 when she died. She moved back to Reedsburg after her husband died in 1938. They lived here for 5 years while he had the Presbyterian church. Agnes came to visit her a couple times a year as did others (not as often) such as Debbie Reynolds and Cesar Romero. Agnes dedicated our new city hall in 1971. Agnes tried to get here every Christmas to read the Christmas story in her father's former church. Molly was also a great singer.
Agnes Moorehead was highly educated and highly respected and had a great life!
I’ve seen her in old movies. Very good actress. Love her character on Bewitched.

She was the solitary actor in the Twilight Zone classic "The Invaders" broadcast in 1961, and she didn't have a single line of dialog. A very talented actress who was a member of Orson Wells' Mercury Theater. I think her earliest movie was Citizen Kane (many of Wells' Mercury Theater had roles in the movie) and she worked continuously until her death in 1974 at age 73.

Agnes reminds me of my grandmother, who inherited the farm after her husband died. She and her son ran it. She continued with a 2-acre garden until her '90s. And she'd walk around the house in a bright flowy day dress.
