School Traditions

Traditions in District 203 and 204 run deep.
At May Watts Elementary, students line up at the sign; to take their first day of school picture, but that isn’t the only tradition for the Kuhn family.
“We walk to school everyday together, our neighbor from across the street walks with us, and has since the beginning of kindergarten,” said Lisa Kuhn.
The half block walk to school is cherished time for Lisa, who, as president of the PTA is an active parent at the school.
“I think kids really enjoy having a parent there and just seeing that you’re involved. I think that they like that you’ve seen what’s at the school and know what’s going on so when they talk about it they are more excited to tell you because you know what they are talking about,” said Kuhn.
Getting involved in school traditions is something new principal of Naperville North High School, Stephanie Posey, is looking forward to.
“Really looking forward to graduation and all of the senior events that go with that. The electricity and energy that you feel here at North isn’t common at many schools and I definitely feel that here,” said Posey.
And her initiation into school tradition came quickly as seniors decked themselves out a la Greased Lightning for their annual first day dress up.
“I have to say it was exciting, when you see a group of students come together, this activity actually brings unity, to that group and to that class and as they run through the school - when they come together and sing the school song on their own, you can tell they are proud to be Huskies and glad to be here at school, how wrong can that be?” said Posey.
One thing that doesn’t get easier, saying goodbye to your student on that first day back.
“You think it would that it would, but it’s a little more emotional, I have a fifth grader so it’s her last year here, and that’s almost as emotional as that first day of kindergarten,” said Kuhn.
